There’s Something for Everyone When the 400-acre fairgrounds opens August 8, it will be brimming with a wide variety of lifestyle and shopping experiences, making it a venue that offers something for everyone. A significant number of exhibitors will be touting expert advice on a variety of agriculturalrelated interests from gardening to food preservation at this year’s Missouri State Fair, while hundreds of vendors will be on hand displaying their latest wares.

The Agriculture Building is among the 15 buildings on the fairgrounds that will host a variety of exhibits and vendor booths during the State Fair. This building, in particular, is a major resource of information as it is comprised primarily of agriculture industry representatives.

These experts range from agronomists to beekeepers who are available to share tips and information with hobbyists and business owners.

The AgriMissouri Farmers’ Market, located in the Agriculture Building, will feature fresh produce and non-food products direct from Missouri farmers.

AgriMissouri is an outreach program through the Missouri Department of Agriculture that promotes Missouri-

grown and Missouri-made items, representing food and non-food products, retailers, farmers’ markets, agritourism and agricultural experience destinations. For more information, visit www. agrimissouri.com.

The Missouri State Fair is a shopping destination, listed by many people as a top reason for making the visit to Sedalia. Fairgoers can shop for hundreds of diverse items from Missouri-made foods and crafts to designer handbags and quality bed sheets.

To help fairgoers plan their visit, judging and demonstration schedules are available online at www.mostatefair. com, with a vendor list being added soon. Visitors can also browse information by topics, including gardening, livestock care, agri-business, wine tasting and outdoor recreation.

Families attending this year’s Missouri State Fair can enjoy hours of free exciting professional entertainment.

The schedule will include everything from new features like the Welde’s Big Bear Expedition and Knights of Valour, a full metal jousting troupe, to returning crowd favorites, such as the Amazing

Anastasini Circus, racing pigs and petting zoo.

The new Welde’s Big Bear Expedition features a family of bears, which serves as wildlife ambassadors, located west of the Agriculture Building August 8-18.

Knights of Valour, as seen on the History Channel, are North America’s premier full-contact joust troupe. The troupe will alternate between performing weapons demonstrations and jousting in shows at the State Fair Arena. This one-day-only experience will include exciting horsemanship, bravery and chivalry from noon to 5:15pm on Sunday, August 11.

The State Fair will also provide four stages packed with 11 days of free, professional entertainment. Acts on the Kids Stage, sponsored by Subway, will include the Thank a Farmer Magic Show August 8-18, Babaloo Music and Fun August 8-12 and Spoon Man August 13-18. Strolling entertainers, acts that meander the fairgrounds entertaining fairgoers, will include The Sweeney Family Band Country Comedy Review, sponsored by McDonalds, and Those Funny Little People, sponsored by Sonic.

Those Funny Little People have been featured on the television hit, America’s Got Talent. Their mix of humor, music and dance will entertain fairgoers of all ages August 8-18.

Three swimmers went 4 for 4 (earning a gold medal in each event they entered) and 14 year old Annika Hofer was the first Florissant swimmer to break a Municipal Conference Record by swimming the 13-14 girls 50 yd breaststroke in 32.66 seconds.

The team overall won 32 gold medals and 119 swimmers had personal best times in the preliminary events. This year’s team included a team high 208 swimmers age 3-18 years old.

Although we have a very experienced coaching staff, the team would not function without the great support of so many Florissant parents who help in keeping time, supervise work out bullpen, organize bake sale and BBQ, take photographs, organize awards and everything else to make the Florissant Fish fantastic.

Kids World Gymnastics Athletes Trio of Brothers Musical Volunteers Lemuel, Doren and Alvin Lan have been makWin Gold, Bronze and Silver Medals The 2013 U.S. Trampoline and Tumbling Championships took place July 4-10 inside Kansas City’s Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, MO. The event featured competition for the Elite Division and the Junior Olympic Division for Levels 5-10 with athletes competing in trampoline, double-mini trampoline, synchronized trampoline and tumbling for both men and women. With more than 2,100 athletes from all of the US, this was a jam packed weeklong competition and the biggest U.S. Championships yet.

Kids World Gymnastics’ competitive Trampoline and Tumbling team called St. Louis Elite sent 12 athletes to this event, claiming a total of 2 Gold, 3 Silver, and 2 Bronze medals. The top 8 athletes in their level and age group make the podium.

Our team also had 2 Fourth place, 1 Six place, and 2 Seventh place and 1 Eighth place Gold Medalist Samuel Mainieri finishes.

The three brothers, ages 14, 17 and 20, have been volunteering their time and talent to TIP Hospice, a division of VNA-TIP HealthCare.

With Doren and Lemuel each playing violin and Alvin playing cello, the trio has been playing classical music in nursing facilities in the Washington, Farmington and Bridgeton areas the past few weeks. Music has been enjoyed not only by patients but also by staff and administrators of each facility.

Having youth volunteers is a positive change of pace for VNA-TIP HealthCare which typically attracts adult volunteers. With the Lan brothers performing, a noticeable calming effect drew in and attracted much of the facility as an audience. “When youth go into nursing homes, it’s really noticeable, because youth are typically absent from that sort of environment,” said Lori Schmoll, volunteer coordinator for VNA-TIP HealthCare. The Lan brothers received warm welcomes from patients who truly enjoyed and appreciated their presence.

Great Rivers Greenway Now Seeking Baseball Championship Tournament Grant Applications to Fund Community Florissant Mayor Tom Schneider and NCCYC Chairman Events and Programs in 2014 Mike Moehlenkamp and Butch The Great Rivers Greenway District is pleased to announce the latest opportunity for community organizations to assist the District in making the St. Louis region an even better place to live.

Great Rivers Greenway is currently extending an open invitation to organizations across the St. Louis area to submit grant requests for planned community events and programs being held at any of the District’s trails and greenways in St. Louis City, St. Louis County and St. Charles County.

Funds are available for 2014 programs and events that will improve awareness and use of the more than 106 miles of completed trails that are a part of Great Rivers Greenway’s planned River Ring, a 600-mile interconnected web of trails, greenways and onstreet bicycle routes.

Grants will be awarded to programs that connect communities and neighborhoods, preserve nature, improve economic vitality, promote good health and/or provide transportation options in St. Charles County, St. Louis County and the City of St. Louis. Previously funded programs and events include Beyond Housing’s Greenway Adventure Series and Better Family Life’s Farmers Markets, which have both taken place on the St. Vincent Greenway, Youth and Family Center’s Mary Meachum Festival near the North Riverfront Trail, and OASIS’s Walk, Hike & Bike Program for seniors, which utilizes several Great Rivers Greenway trails in St. Charles County and Western St. Louis County.

Applications for 2014 event and programming grant funds will be accepted now through noon on Sept. 13. St. Anthony’s Charitable Foundations Helps Protect At-Risk Children Saint Louis Crisis Nursery proudly announced today that St. Anthony’s Charitable Foundation donated $5,000 to support the agency’s child abuse prevention programs. The funding will be utilized for Crisis Nursery’s SOS For Kids program, which provides emergency care to children whose families are living in poverty.

The SOS for Kids program not only provides immediate access to safe care, but also assesses all children at-risk and targets further services for those that struggle with: • Unresolved trauma due to violence or abuse (witnessing violence in home) • Diagnosis of ADHD, ODD or PDD

• Developmentally/educationally delayed • Challenging behaviors (disruption of activities, clinging or compulsively seeking affection and attention), aggressiveness, uncooperativeness, over-sexualized behaviors, bedwetting • Destructive or antisocial behavior (being constantly withdrawn and sad) • Poor relationships with peers (easily bullied or bullying other children) • Lack of self-confidence • Inability to react with emotion or develop an emotional bond with others Saint Louis Crisis Nursery is an independent not-for-profit agency that provides a short-term, safe haven for more than 7,000 children a year, birth through age 12, whose families are faced with an emergency or crisis.

Hazelwood Police Explorers Attend Academy to Learn Volunteer With Your Heart Local residents who purchased tables and participated in the silent auction at a recent Trivia Night fundraiser for Hazelwood Police Explorers Post #9217 helped send seven Explorers to the 2013 Greater St. Louis Area Law Enforcement Explorer Academy.

This event was held during the week of July 21-26 at Maryville University. It was run like a boot camp for local Police Explorers and simulates what it’s like to go to the Police Academy. Participants also received training needed to compete in the National Law Enforcement Exploring Conference scheduled for 2014 in Indianapolis, Ind. Hazelwood Explorers attending the Academy are stayed on-site in dormitories the whole week. Instructors woke them up every morning at 5am and gave them time for physical training, showering, making their bed, and preparing for room inspections and roll call by 7am. After breakfast, they began classroom learning at 8am.

The lectures covered all aspects of police work ranging from criminal law to crime prevention, defensive weapon tactics to officer survival, traffic stop to arrest procedures, criminal and bomb investigations to burglaries in progress, accident to narcotic investigations, and hostage negotiations to emergency management. Later in the day, they were given opportunities to roll play and put what they learn to practical use. In addition, they were given time to run through drills, march formations and obstacle courses.

The advisors who teach these courses are certified police officers from different law enforcement agencies throughout the St. Louis region.

The instructors chosen for the Shoot Don’t Shoot/Defensive Tactics class included Lt. Ray White (ret.) and P.O. Will Russ of Hazelwood. Both of them were instrumental in preparing Hazelwood’s Police Explorers to win the 1st Place trophy in the Traffic Stop category at the 2010 National Law Enforcement Exploring Conference in Atlanta, Ga. Ray White (ret.), who served 30 years on the Hazelwood Police Department before his retirement, was chosen as an instructor for the Shoot Don’t Shoot/Defensive Tactics course. Although no real weapons were used during the training, Lt. White (ret.) shows a group of Level 1 Police Explorers the importance of making sure the safety is on before putting their gun in the holster and remembering to disengage it before shooting the weapon.

What to do with a hostile motorist during a traffic stop – Lt. Ray White (ret.) teaches Police Explorers the step-by-step procedures on how to deal with a hostile situation during a traffic stop. Police Explorers competing in the Traffic Stop competition at the National Law Enforcement Exploring Conference often find themselves in these scenarios and are graded on their performance.

Black Jack Sewer Lateral Fee For the fourth straight year, residents of the City of Black Jack will pay nothing to participate in the City’s Sewer Lateral Program. Acting on the request of the Mayor, the City Council unanimously approved setting the rate at Zero.

In 2010, voters approved a ballot measure to allow the City Council the flexibility in adjusting the yearly sewer lateral rate with a cap rate set at $28. The sewer lateral fee is paid by residents on their annual tax bill, to aid in the cost of repairing a residential sewer lateral break, which is a break in the sewer line between the house and street sewer.

Mayor Norm McCourt said, “With today’s economy, it is a plus to reduce the cost of government for the residents of our City. The Council and I are glad that we are in a position to set the sewer lateral fee at zero again this year”.

The Challenger Learning Center-St. Louis has been awarded a grant of $51,394 from the Monsanto Fund to continue the “Monsanto Sprouting Astronauts Program.” The program provides Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)-based programs to 5th-grade teachers and students in the Ferguson-Florissant School District.

“The generosity of the Monsanto Fund allows us to continue providing this meaningful and impactful program that engages and ignites a student’s interest in science and provides teachers with the resources they need to help their students reach for the stars,” said Tasmyn Scarl Front, Director of the Challenger Learning Center.

The Monsanto Sprouting Astronauts Program includes teacher professional development workshops, curriculum materials and a planetarium and classroom program at school. Students and their teachers also visit the Challenger Learning Center to participate in the Center’s Junior Astronauts program.

“The Monsanto Sprouting Astronauts Program at The Challenger Learning Center does more than spark a child’s imagination and encourage their scientific exploration,” said Monsanto Fund president Deborah Patterson. “The program also supports our area’s educators as they teach the sciences in their classrooms and pave the road for future innovators, engineers, and scientists.”

National Society of Black Engineers Presents Award

More than 600 teachers, administrators and other educators attended the three-day Hazelwood School District Summer Institute on Assessment Literacy held this week. In addition, on Tuesday night, more than 750 parents and students participated in an informational session on Assessment Literacy.

Assessment for learning, or Assessment Literacy, seeks to inform students about themselves and their own learning. This process helps students discover exactly where they are in relation to the learning targets set by their teachers. The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) presented the academic commitment and excellence (ACE) award to Kalen Armstead, senior at Hazelwood East High School, during its annual scholar awards reception. The event took place on the campus of Washington University in the school of engineering on July 14.

Hazelwood School District Superintendent Dr. Grayling Tobias said, “I am thrilled that Kalen Armstead was recognized at this year’s event. HSD students have participated in previous NSBE’s pre-college initiative (PCI) programs and have received college scholarships and other awards. As a result, several of them are now in college engineering programs.”

NSBE’s reception theme was Honoring Our Past, Driving Our Community Forward. The keynote speaker was Lt. Gen. Darren W. McDew, recognized U.S. Army pilot and commander of the 18th Air Force, Scott Air Force Base, Illinois.

The NSBE is one of the area’s premier organizations that engage young African-American students interested in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) in positive and creative outlets.

Tobias attended this year’s scholar awards reception, in support of Armstead and for the respected work that NSBE is doing in the community. Among other guests were Ajora Logwood and Edgar Pullen, HEHS seniors. Also in attendance were HEHS alumni and former NSBE scholarship recipients, Nicholas Bolden and Brian Kelly.

Place pineapple, soy sauce, garlic, ginger and sesame oil in ziptop bag and mix well.

Carefully hollow 1 loaf, leaving 1-inch on sides and bottom to make a bowl. Cube removed bread and additional loaf. Place bowl and cubes on baking sheets and bake for 10 minutes or until golden brown. Blend mayo, sour cream and dip; mix together in a large bowl. Add artichoke hearts, spinach and water chestnuts; mix well. Cover and refrigerate until well chilled. To serve hot: Stir in 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese; microwave on high 4-5 minutes or until hot, stirring occasionally. Transfer dip to bread bowl and serve with toasted bread cubes.

Events Now: Meals on Wheels Needs Volunteers Meals on Wheels, North County needs volunteers to work a few hours a week. The all-volunteer program delivers hot nutritious meals Monday through Friday to approximately 150 people generally limited by medical conditions.

The service allows some of our residents to live at home who might otherwise have to make other arrangements. Volunteers usually drive once a week and deliver meals on one of 23 different routes in North County. It takes about an hour and a half and drivers are usually done by 12:30. I-170 Extension Dissension After reading about extending I-170 South to I-44, I was once again reminded of the expensive design foolishness and terminus limitations of the Metrolink light rail system. I’ve written about it before, but I’m reminded of it every time I see another adverse result of one of the poorest public transportation systems in the country.

As I pointed out previously, Metrolink’s design and expensive construction was the result of political forces catering to local demands including expensive, vintage, obsolete designs that went out with depression era speakeasies.

When compared to Japan’s inexpensive light rail that travels above the roads and highways instead of on, around or under selected routes, it seems embarrassing.

One case in point was the Metrolink along Forest Park Boulevard to Clayton that must have cost enough to build two or three modern overhead light rail systems.

The giant excavation costs must have been staggering.

I’ve heard comments many times that we’ve become a spoiled society. We would rather drive in crowded, dangerous and polluted rush hour traffic than ride on public transportation to and from our work places. I’ll admit that larger cities like Chicago and New York leave little choice. One is forced to ride public transportation because, if for no other reason, there is no place to park. It’s accepted as life-in-the-big-city for the local residents.

The I-170 extension would obviously crash through some of the most expensive and crowded real estate in St. Louis County to make driving to the airport a bit quicker, among other advantages. I’ve driven on nearby Brentwood Boulevard and burned enough gas sitting at traffic lights to drive three times as far on an interstate highway. Yet the people affected by the extension are adamant in their demands to forget the whole idea.

Once again, I’m reminded of the costs of commuting in our personal vehicles as opposed to riding on public transportation. The differences are manifest.

As an example, my old Mustang averages at least 20 mpg in combined city and highway, save trying to accelerate around lane hogs on cell phones. If I drive from say, O’Fallon, to a Market Street address in St. Louis on the 400 block and back, a round trip of about 78 miles at 20 mpg, it would average about $13.65 in gasoline and considerably more in tires, maintenance, vehicle depreciation

and stress drugs. Were light rail extended out through St. Charles County and I paid five dollars per trip, I could’ve spent the difference on far better things like adult boy-toys or spoiling my grandchildren.

I should include the savings in parking fees and tickets in the parking meter capitol of the free world. I’m sometimes convinced St. Louis is paying the salaries of the entire city government from parking meter revenue and ticket fines along with sharing loot from cars towed from expired meters to impound yards of criminal organizations that charge more than an oil company lobbyist to keep them until they’re released.

When light rail was originally voted down in St. Charles County, I couldn’t really blame the voters. The sales tax increase wasn’t welcome. But, I’d like to think the public was wise enough to understand the present Metrolink was a poorly designed, overly expensive example of a people-mover as compared to modern, less expensive light rail systems. What I would rather have voted for was an advanced overhead monorail that crossed the Missouri river and extended at least to Foristell if not further.

Fat chance. Open wallet, buy gas, suffer road rage...
