School districts across St. Louis County get students prepared for the upcoming school year with a variety of events

By Charlotte Beard It has become a norm for communities to receive support from various nonprofits in providing backpack events in preparation for kids returning to school. However, school districts have also become more involved in preparing students for their return, not only with supplies but various resources as is the case with Normandy Schools Collaborative, Hazelwood School District, and the Ferguson-Florissant School District.

Normandy Schools Collaborative will host its Beyond the Backpack Community Event Saturday, Aug. 10 at the Normandy High School located at 6701 St. Charles Rock Rd. The open community event will run 11 a.m.

to 2 p.m. Students will be provided free backpacks, courtesy of Novo Nordisk pharmaceutical company, filled with school supplies on a first-come-first-serve basis. In addition, the first 1,000 students who were registered for school online will receive a free pair of Adidas shoes at the event. Proof of registration/ enrollment is required to receive backpacks and shoes.

Affina Healthcare, which operates the collaborative’s healthcare center, will also be present at the event to provide families with free health exams and screenings. In addition, among the 40 vendors that will be on site to provide information about its services

and programs are: Big Brothers Big Sisters, Eyeseeme Bookstore, St. Louis County Library, The Nine Network, Job Corps, and St. Louis Community College. In addition, Normandy and Beyond Housing will sponsor the free event’s free haircuts which includes the entertainment of The Bubble Bus (machine-equipped bus that blows bubbles for enjoyment), bounce house, and a DJ for music. Free food will also be provided.

The collaborative began the back-to-school event in 2010 after various municipalities in its footprint began hosting their own events.

“Beyond Housing thought it would be more efficient if the events were consolidated into one,” shared Sharifah Sims-Williams, Director of Communications for Normandy.

“This event was born out of Beyond Housing’s support for (its) rental housing customers,” adds Terry Hurley, Marketing Consultant for Beyond Housing. “They have always offered their customers services and resources that go beyond housing services: back to school supplies, holiday (gifts), after school programs, financial planning, and college savings accounts to name just a few.

From there, it grew in partnership with the district supporting Normandy students and families as well as families outside of the district that go to other schools. It’s part of our belief that a strong community has strong schools and education at its center. Which is why we invest in the district, schools and the (Family Engagement Liaisons.)”

Shuttle buses will also be available for attendees to and from the event. All buses will provide pickups between 11 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. based on the locations indicated on the event flyer, which can be found on the district’s calendar at: https://www.normandysc.org. Shuttles will begin transport back to the pickup locations at 1 p.m. with the last shuttle departing Normandy High School at 1:45 p.m.

The Hazelwood School District had its annual Back To School Community Fair on

July 27 and is following up this month with a series of Open Houses prior to the Aug. 13 return date for its students. Hazelwood’s event included the distribution of backpacks provided by ten different fire and police districts in Hazelwood’s community. The school supplies were provided by the Hazelwood School District Foundation.

“The Back To School Community Fairs are an event that we hold annually at each high school simultaneously,” stated Ross Green, Public Relations Specialist for Hazelwood School District. “That’s our opportunity to get families together to link up with their schools, community partners, different district departments – a one-stop shop for families. The highlight of (the event) is that our local police and fire protection district are on hand to [distribute] backpacks filled with school supplies to students. We really love that partnership we have. This year we gave out more than 1,500 backpacks full of supplies. So, we were thrilled about that.

Also, every school had a booth so families could meet their principals and staff members, and every district department that families might need to contact. Our department, Communications, was there. (Families) received an (opportunity) to talk to transportation, nutrition, and enrollment.

We also had community partners on hand.

We like to do (this) to help (students) feel ready for their first day.”

school-centered open house events beginning Aug. 8. Some schools will have themed events such as Popsicles with the Principal at Keeven Elementary which will include time for meeting teachers. Brown Elementary’s open house theme is Back To School Bash.

“They make it a fun event for families,” stated Ross. “We really want the families to feel welcome and have a fun time as [students] [prepare] to go back to school.”

The Ferguson-Florissant School District is hosting its Back To School Parade & Fair on Saturday, Aug. 10, same day as Normandy. The parade will begin 9 a.m. at Mark Twain Student Support Center located at 1555 Derhake Rd. in Florissant. The parade will travel west to Waterford, turn right and conclude at the Waterford side of McCluer North High School. The fair at the Old Administration Center located at 1005 Waterford Drive from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

So many people procrastinate because they have a fear of failure. Many procrastinate because they don’t have the guts to proceed. Procrastination is a thief of time.

Why put off until tomorrow, something that can be done today! If you are not a procrastinator, and are just recovering from some recent setback or failure, let me be among the first to remind you that “It’s not over till it’s over.”

“It’s not over until the fat lady sings” and they haven’t even let her on the stage! Les Brown, a famous marketing speaker has said that he will keep getting up every time he is knocked down, until he wins!

Certainly, you have heard it said that “The best is yet to come!” Most successful entrepreneurs have had a number of business failures but have continued to pursue their dreams and notions until they make the right one work.

Therefore, I say to you, don’t give up and

don’t give in, but buckle up, button down and ride the wave to success.

It is so easy to compromise and blame your lack of success on others, on the economy, on market shifts and other misunderstandings, but it may be the fact that you got out of the race too soon.

Good advice suggests that you enter the marketplace, plan your work and work your plan. When you stay focused on your plan you won’t be diverted because of what is happening to someone else, good or bad.

Often, because of circumstances, age, health, finances and other kinds of assists.

Obstacles, or excuses, we may decide to accept defeat. No, no, we just need to put “de-feet” in another direction and keep on stepping.

The city of Florissant Civic Center Theater hosts the 30th Annual Ms. Missouri Senior America Pageant The city of Florissant was again chosen to host the 2019 Ms. Missouri Senior America Pageant. The event was held at the Florissant Civic Center Theater on July 14.

The pageant, held annually in the St. Louis Area, exemplifies the elegance of senior women over the age of 60. The ladies compete in four categories: personal interview with judges before the pageant starts, poise in evening gown, recitation of a 35 second philosophy of life and a two and a one half-minute talent presentation.

The Senior America Pageant is the world’s first and foremost pageant to emphasize and give honor to women who have reached the “Age of Elegance.”

Congratulations to the 2019 Ms. Missouri Senior Pageant America winner who was Nancy Wilkinson, D.C. from St. Louis.

The first runner up was Carolyn Schlueter from St. Charles, the second runner up was Linda Stewart from St. Louis and Katherine Lovegren from Manchester won for Miss Congeniality.

Chamber Music Society of St. Louis announces the 2019-20 season The eleventh season of the Chamber Music Society of St. Louis (CMSSL) promises classical music lovers a wide variety of concerts.

Executive and Artistic Director, Marc Gordon commented, “There is always an air of excitement when we start a new season, but this one brings us into our second decade. In addition, we have been granted significant support for our concert series from the Centene Charitable Foundation. To acknowledge this unprecedented trust and confidence from Centene, we have named our subscription series The Centene Charitable Foundation Chamber Concert Series.”

The cabaret-style concert series at the Sheldon holds six concert pairs in the Sheldon Ballroom plus two programs in the Sheldon Concert Hall. The season also holds a number of events featuring students from CMSSL education programs, the second year of the Cookie Concert series of Saturday matinee concerts at the 560 Music Center as well as the education outreach concerts and the eighth year of the Master Class Series. This series of nine classes serves over thirty St. Louis area schools and is free to students.

On Oct. 14-15, the season opens with “No Place Like Home”, a celebration of American music including Gershwin, Barber, Adams, Bolcom, plus Dvorak’s American String Quartet.

CMSSL offers two performances of each regular season program in the Sheldon Ballroom (3648 Washington Blvd., Grand Center, St. Louis, MO 63108) on Monday and Tuesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. (unless otherwise noted). Subscriptions are on sale now and information is available online or by phone at 314-941-6309. Single tickets are available via phone and will be released online Aug. 15.

CMSSL performances are also part of the Concert Pass Collaborative program providing free admission for students.

In addition to performances, CMSSL hosts programs to further educate area musicians. The Master Class Series offers students the chance to prepare and perform solo and chamber works, guided by a CMSSL artist. The CMSSL and The Community Music School of Webster University’s Preparatory Program have partnered for the Young Artists Chamber Program, which nurtures the next generation of chamber music ensembles. Three Days Grace makes a comeback Rock fans gathered on a hot Sunday evening on July 21 at Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre to watch the iconic Breaking Benjamin, Chevelle, Three Days Grace, Dorothy and Diamante preform in their 2019 North America Tour.

Three Days Grace was not the headliner for this tour but they were exceptional in their performance and offered a sense of nostalgia for fans. Opening their set with “The Mountain” from their latest album “The Outsider,” which featured their new lead singer Matt Walst on the entire album.

Walst did a phenomenal job performing the songs that came before his 2013 arrival to the band, performing songs: “Home,” “The Good Life” and “Riot” in an arguably better quality than the former lead singer, Adam Gontier.

While the band’s performance was short with their eight-song set they proved to be just as talented as before. The St. Louis County Police Department (SLCPD) recently awarded Kimberly Cella, of Citizens for Modern Transit (CMT), with a certificate of appreciation for her many years of service and dedication to improving the area’s public transportation system. As part of the presentation, the SLCPD reinforced how her establishment of strong working relationships with local

law enforcement and the Transit Advisory Working Group has helped to provide a safe, improved and more accommodating public transit system.

“I have confidence that Dr. Sobolik will continue moving UMSL forward and providing the necessary support to faculty, staff and students as they work toward excellence in research, teaching and service.”

Sobolik’s appointment will be in effect until a new, permanent chancellor is named. Choi plans to meet in the fall with UMSL faculty, staff, alumni and supporters to discuss details of a national search for a permanent chancellor.

George, UMSL chancellor since 2003, announced his retirement in March. He appointed Sobolik UMSL provost in May 2017 and designated her as executive vice chancellor one year later.

“There is great momentum at UMSL,” Sobolik said. “Our student graduation and retention rates are at the top of the nation for urban and metropolitan universities; we have expanded our outreach in the community, and our research enterprise is growing. UMSL’s mission is to transform lives, and I’m honored to be asked to step

As a nationally recognized scholar who helped develop the fields of archaeobiology and paleonutrition, Sobolik has more than 100 scientific publications, books and presentations, including many in top publications such as “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Current Anthropology, Journal of Field Archaeology and PLoS One.” As a professor, she has directed nearly 20 graduate student thesis and dissertation projects and taught undergraduate and graduate classes in several areas, including archaeobiology and interdisciplinary areas.

Normandy Joint Executive Governing Board gets new member Anthony W. Neal was sworn in July 22 as the newest member of Normandy Schools Collaborative’s Joint Executive Governing Board. Neal is replacing former JEGB Director Richard Ryffel, who stepped down after five years of service to the collaborative.

A resident of the district, Neal currently serves as the president/CEO and senior partner of St. Louis-based Educational Equity Consultants (EEC). He has been an active member of multiple organizations and community boards in the St. Louis area including the St. Louis Royal Vagabonds, 100 Black Men of St. Louis, and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. “Anthony is a great addition to the Joint Executive Governing Board,” said Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education Margie Vandeven.

“His years of experience with the St. Louis community will benefit Normandy students and faculty as they continue to make great strides toward full accreditation.”

Neal also works as an adjunct professor at Webster University and earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Ga. Neal is a 2000 graduate of the FOCUS St. Louis Leadership program, a 2003 graduate of the Harvard University Urban Principals’ Institute, a 2006 graduate of the Vanderbilt University/ Peabody College Summer Fellows program, and a 2007 graduate of the National School Leaders Network Facilitator’s training at Wellesley College.

“This is an honor to join the board and the Normandy family,” Neal said at the public meeting July 22. “I’m here to support our schools and families, and continue the great work that’s been done so far.”

Other Developments from the July 22 JEGB Meeting Rev. Cedric Portis officially announced his departure from the JEGB. Portis, a Normandy High School graduate, served as vice president and president on the JEGB. He was appointed to the board by the state Board of Education in 2015. During his tenure, the Normandy earned provisional accreditation and passed a $23 million no-tax-rate-increase bond issue, allowing Normandy to build a new Early Learning Center, and additions at Washington and Jefferson schools. Portis, an engineer by trade, was intimately involved with the planning of these projects. He cited the need to spend more time with his family and his church, Third Presbyterian Church in north St. Louis County, where he serves as pastor.

The JEGB also elected officers for the 2019-2020 school year. Officers for the upcoming school year are: Sara Foster, president; Pamela Westbrooks-Hodge, vice president; and Sheila Williams, secretary/ treasurer.

Northwest Views: Detecting the early signs of Alzheimer’s

By Sarah Lovegreen Many symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease can seem like symptoms of normal aging, but in reality, they aren’t. The Alzheimer’s Association has a list of 10 early signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s. If you notice any of these symptoms in yourself or a loved one, it’s important to schedule an appointment with a doctor.

1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life.

Usually, memory loss includes forgetting recently learned information and asking for the same information over and over again.

2. Challenges in planning or solving problems.

Developing and following a plan can become increasingly difficult for people with Alzheimer’s. It may take them longer to do things than it did before and they may have difficulty concentrating.

3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks at home, at work or at leisure.

Daily tasks often become difficult for people with Alzheimer’s. They may have trouble driving to a familiar location, managing a budget or remembering the rules of a favorite game.

4. Confusion with time or place.

They can lose track of dates, seasons and the passage of time. Sometimes they may forget where they are or how they got there.

5. Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships.

Vision problems can be a sign of Alzheimer’s.

They may have difficulty reading, judging distance and determining color or contrast, which may cause problems with driving.

6. New problems with words in speaking or writing.

The may stop in the middle of a conversation and have no idea how to continue or they may repeat themselves. They might also experience problems finding the right word or call things the wrong name.

7. Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps.

A person with Alzheimer’s may put things in unusual places or lose things and are unable to retrace steps to find them again.

8. Decreased or poor judgment.

They may use poor judgment when dealing with money and pay less attention to keeping themselves clean.

9. Withdrawal from work or social activities.

Someone with Alzheimer’s may remove themselves from hobbies, social activities, work projects or sports. They may also avoid being social.

10. Changes in mood or personality.

They may become confused, suspicious, depressed, fearful or anxious and may become upset out of their comfort zone.

Aug. 10: Road Rally fundraiser

Soroptimist International of Greater St. Louis, a volunteer organization for business and professional women, is pleased to announce its second annual Road Rally fundraiser and is looking for participants and sponsors. Participants in the Road Rally will leave from Atonement Lutheran Church beginning at 10 a.m. and embark on a journey through Florissant and Hazelwood. The Road Rally will end at an undisclosed location where the fun will continue with lunch, live music provided by Dennis Schilligo and activities for the young and young at heart. The entry fee is $50 per car up to four adults and $10 for each additional adult (kids under 12 free). Each team must have a least two people, a driver and a navigator. This is a family friendly event, no pets or

Women’s softball in review at Lindenwood Lindenwood University’s 2019 team continued to progress under head coach Liz Kelly.

The Lions finished the season 29-17 and qualified for the MIAA Championship for the second consecutive season. Three Lions were named to the MIAA All-Conference team: Stormee Galka as a first team pitcher/utility, Austine Pauley at second team shortstop and Hanna Porter at honorable mention first base.

A few highlights included: • Lindenwood defeated No. 16 Grand Valley State in

eight innings at the Rosemont Dome Invitational on Feb. 22-Freshman Madison Corwell threw all eight innings, picking up the win.

• The Lions entered conference play at 6-2 overall and swept Emporia State in the opening series of MIAA action.

• For spring break, Lindenwood traveled to Florida for a pair of doubleheaders-the Lions swept Ave Maria before splitting a doubleheader at Lynn.

• Lindenwood hosted future GLVC conference rival Missouri S&T on March 26-the Lion offense exploded for a pair of wins: 10-2 and 16-4over the series, Lindenwood hit .533 with a .767 slugging percentage and a .567 onbase percentage-in game two, the Lions scored 11 runs in the first inning.

We continue to build on what was here and look to make it to the NCAAs.” * Good things to come Rascals need a spark to get rolling again The defending West Division champion River City Rascals baseball club plays in the Frontier League with home games at the friendly confines of the CarShield Field in O’Fallon.

As mentioned in other articles, the club has had several players picked up by major league clubs over the past few months.

That being said, this allows second-string players fill in the gap to show their expertise in the competitive Frontier League.

As August begins the Rascals are 4.5 games out of first and still in the running for a wild card spot.

The roster is full of talent and here are several that are right near the top in statistics in the league: •

Infielder Andrew Penner is 10th in

the league in hitting with a .289 average.

• Infielder Braxton Martinez is 13th with nine home runs.

• Infielder Martinez had 52 runs batted in and is third along with outfielder Nolan Meadows who is sixth with 52.

• Pitcher Alex Winkelman is tied for first with seven wins along with Yeison Medina and Brendan Feldmann who have five victories.

• Feldmann led the league with a 1.66 earned run average along with Winkelman who has 3.09 ERA, good for 14th position.

• As a team, the Rascals are third in hitting with a .252 average.

Roasted Portobello Mushrooms with Beets and Goat Cheese Ingredients 1 jar (16 ounces) whole pickled beets 4 large portobello mushrooms (about 1 pound) 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/2 cup fresh bread crumbs, such as sourdough or whole wheat. (See note below) 1/4 cup sliced green onions or chopped chives 1/4 cup coarsely chopped walnuts, toasted 1/2 cup (2 ounces) crumbled goat cheese Directions: Heat oven to 400°F.

Summertime storytellers: Marvel Studios and Quentin Tarantino

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work. Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

Made for approximately one million dollars, 1976’s “Rocky” became a box office success that spawned sequels and turned Sylvester Stallone into a star. The original film, which was effectively raw and gritty, even became the foundation for the more recent “Creed” franchise. In 1977, “Rocky” beat out such cinematic classics as “Network” and “Taxi Driver” for Best Picture honors at the 49th Academy Awards.

So why did a “Cinderella Story” like this one do so well? The answer seems clear: storytelling. A director can have state-of-the-art special effects and an A-list cast to work with and still flop at the box office. As the summer of 2019 has shown, filmmakers who can tell a great story can bring people into theaters.

Look, for instance, at what Marvel Studios and its leader, Kevin Feige, did with some long-established comic book properties. Other studios had the rights to some Marvel characters, but their efforts, such as “The Fantastic Four” movies and a made-for-television version of “Captain America,” left a lot to be desired. I do respect Roger Corman, though, for his version of “The Fantastic Four,” which was made for just one million dollars.

At Marvel Comics, Stan Lee employed fantastic writers and artists in its fabled “Bullpen.”

Feige stayed true to what Lee and company did when creating the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The first movie, “Iron Man,”

introduced audiences to Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.), a self-proclaimed “genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist” who creates a modern-day suit of armor to save his life.

Over time, Stark added the word “hero” to that list of adjectives.

“Iron Man” also set the stage for a storyline that would take more than a decade to fulfill.

At the end of the first MCU movie, Tony Stark was greeted by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) in an after-the-credits scene. The head of S.H.I.E.L.D wanted to talk about something called “The Avengers Initiative.” Eleven years later, audiences lined up to see “Avengers: Endgame,” a film with storytelling so powerful that it brought many viewers to tears.

Quentin Tarantino is a director, writer and movie lover whose films tend to be bloody and violent. 2009’s “Inglorious Basterds,” for instance, takes place during World War II and

features a group of Jewish-American soldiers focused on killing Nazis. Brad Pitt plays Lieutenant Aldo Raine, their leader who wages a vengeful war on the German army. Its unconventional characters and plotline made it an engaging film.

Tarantino’s latest release, “Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood,” showcases his storytelling ability. Leonardo DiCaprio plays Rick Dalton, an actor whose star is slowly fading as the 1960’s come to an end. Supported by his friend, out-of-work stuntman Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), Dalton grasps at opportunities in 1969 Hollywood, but turns up his nose at doing “Spaghetti Westerns.” The film also features a hilarious segment with the late Bruce Lee, who spars with the no-nonsense Rick.

Rick Dalton is a fascinating character and his journey mirrors those of real-life actors who find they aren’t as relevant as they once were. Dalton was a hot property, but age and bad habits have diminished his skills. Tarantino also includes Sharon Tate, a real-life actress skillfully played by Margot Robbie. Tate is on the verge of becoming a superstar before dark things happening in the Hollywood Hills catch up with her.

Tarantino and Marvel Studios are both highly effective storytellers. They know that the foundation of any successful project requires that the screenplay be solid before the cameras are turned on.

Moore On Life My out-of-state kids are packed up and gone and along with them they had the nerve to kidnap my grandbabies. They left believing the only reason I had kids was to get grandkids.

That’s just silly and irrational thinking. I don’t know what led them to believe such a thing, but my daughter took me aside one day.

“Mother!” (That’s my “in trouble” name.) She continued. “You let your grandkids get away with so much; more than we ever got away with.”

I looked at her with a blank stare. “Whatever do you mean?” I asked.

“Don’t play innocent. This morning Ellie spilled her cup of milk and you didn’t even blink.”

“Accidents happen.”

“Only it wasn’t an accident. You saw her lift her cup and pour it out.”

“That’s because she had a good reason.”

“What reason?”

“She stuck her face in it after and said, watch me I’m a vacuum, then slurped it all up. It was the most adorable thing I’ve ever seen. I took a video of it.”

“Oh my gosh! If any of us had done that when we were little we’d get yelled at plus time out until our next birthday.”

My other daughter chimed in at this point. “Ya and you’d make us eat whatever you fixed with no arguments or else. I remember eating broccoli for breakfast because I didn’t finish it at dinnertime.”

“And you’re still alive and very healthy,” I added.

“But yesterday, Jaxon threw a fit because you cut up his strawberries.”

“My mistake. He wanted them whole.”

“And what did you do?”

“Well after I realized we were fresh out of strawberry glue, I made your dad run to the store and get new ones.

The baby wanted whole ones; I got him whole ones.

It proves nothing.

What else have you got?”

“This!” she continued. “You put new batteries in all the

toys.”

“So. The batteries were out. What does that show?”

“Because when a toy’s battery went out you told us that it had died and went to Jesus and would never be alive again. Proof positive that the only reason you birthed us was to get grandkids.”

Shaky evidence. But wait until they discover the twenty dollar bill I slipped into each of the babies’ backpacks for ice cream later.

Ooopsie. Guilty as charged.
