Hazelwood School District Superintendent Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart has been recognized as National Superintendent of the Year

By Charlotte Beard Every year the National Association of School Superintendents (NASS), which represents and advocates for education leaders nationwide, bestows upon one individual from around the country the honor of National Superintendent of the Year. This year NASS’ semi-finalists included one superintendent from each of the following states: California, Arizona, and Massachusetts.

However, the recipient of this year’s honor is Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart, Superintendent of Hazelwood School District (HSD). She will be officially honored in September at the NASS IgnitED Conference in Washington, D.C. “Dr. Collins-Hart is a champion for stu-

dents and continuous improvement,” said Jon Roach, NASS Executive Director. “Her commitment to collaboration and mutual support in her district proved she is a leader with a demonstrated vision of building the next great generation of American students.”

Sonny Da Marto, NASS Assistant Executive Director adds, “If you look at what Dr. Collins-Hart has done within her district and community and what she is focused on, you’ll see why she is the type of school leader that our students really need.”

At this year’s HSD Convocation on Aug. 6, Collins-Hart stated in her speech, “We will be that district that with transitions continues to be the model for the country of what we do

to help students who need us most, and continue to accelerate those students who will do well with or without us.”

Since the beginning of Collins-Hart’s leadership in July 2016, HSD has launched a strategic plan that includes new and innovative educational programming and parent and community involvement. In addition, the district expanded its Early Childhood Education program by offering free full-day preschools as well as launched a school-based health center.

“In terms of equity, we know we have some work to do,” Collins-Hart shared with the 2,200 district employees at the convocation.

We looked at our institutional practices. We removed language that might have a young person start their day off bad, not because of anything they did but because of what they wore or what they look like. That does not mean that we’re not going to address it. It just means that it’s not going to be a distraction from learning. Those are the kinds of processes that we are looking at this year and we are well on our road to equity. I can say because of that work – I’m HSD proud.”

Prior to Collins-Hart becoming the educational leader for the second largest district in St. Louis County and seventh-largest district in Missouri, she served as superintendent for Proviso Township High School and District 209 in Forest Park, Illinois; Pre K - 12 districts in North Carolina; and assistant superintendent in Chapel Hill – Carrboro City Schools in North Carolina, and the Lawrence Public Schools in Kansas.

“People I respected and admired encouraged me to become a school administrator,” Collins-Hart stated.

“They helped me pursue the positions and supported me along the way.”

Her leadership reaches beyond the educational affiliations such as the

American Association of School Administrators and the National Association of Black School Educators. The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority member serves in various roles in the community. She is a member of the Christian Hospital Board, the North County Incorporated Board of Directors, Valley Industries Board of Directors, and the Kiwanis Club of Florissant.

Collins-Hart, who started her career as a teacher, has a doctorate in educational policy and leadership from the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas and a master’s degree in educational administration and curriculum and instruction, and a master’s degree in English Education – both from East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. In addition, she has a bachelor’s degree in English education from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.

The 2019 NASS National Superintendent of the Year is among many honors the HSD superintendent has received. Some of her honors resulting from her leadership and service in the community are: Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. Apple Teacher of the Year Award; National Alliance of Black School Educators 2015 Ida B. A shot in the dark It seems like just yesterday I was writing about protecting yourself from sunburn (this summer) and here we are getting ready to send our babies back to school, effectively ending summer. August brings us many things. August is referred to as the dog days of summer. Did you know that has nothing to do with pets? Apparently, the star Sirius (known as the dog star) appears at sunrise in the month of August. Aug. 3 is National Watermelon Day, Aug. 5-11 is National Smile Week, and the entire month of August is Immunization Awareness Month.

The terms immunization and vaccination are used interchangeably. We typically tend to associate vaccinations with children and back to school, but they’re actually a lifetime thing. Chickenpox, MMR, and Tdap vaccinations are typically administered early on in life, HPV vaccinations are administered between the ages of 9 and 26 (dependent upon

gender), while shingles vaccinations are recommended for healthy adults age 50 and beyond. Trust me, even mild cases of shingles are excruciatingly painful; I’ve witnessed it firsthand.

The pneumonia vaccination can be complex because it is recommended for all adults over 65 (through two dosages that are given a year apart) but is also recommended for those under 65 with certain risk factors and all children under two. Flu vaccinations are ever-evolving and should be administered annually. So, as usual, consult with your physician and/ or pharmacist to determine which vaccinations you need.

I know that there are anti-vaxxers out there that disagree wholeheartedly, my husband being one of them, but immunizations just make sense. Most importantly, they help to halt or slow the spread of disease and become cost-effective because they can help to prevent lost time,

wages and productivity due to illness. To make things easier, state law now allows for pharmacists to vaccinate patients as young as seven, which means that a trip to your local pharmacy can get you the vaccinations you need. So, happy August and happy vaccinations!

Plaque dedication to honor late former Florissant City Councilman to take place in Florissant

The city of Florissant along with Old Town Partners will be hosting a dedication to unveil a plaque in honor of the late Harold “Hal” Schuchmann, former Florissant City Councilman from 1963 to 1975. This will be the 40th Walk Through History plaque in honor of someone who has made a valuable contribution to the city of Florissant.

The ceremony will be held on Aug. 28 at 5:45 p.m. on rue St. Francois and Boone Street on the south side of the street.

Schuchmann was a United States Army Veteran and Washington University graduate. He served as a Florissant City Councilmember from 1963 to 1975 and was an advocate for the development and building of the existing city hall building and both of the civic centers. He was also instrumental and served on the Board of Freeholders in 1963 and was a part of drafting the city charter.

Schuchmann served as the Lord of Valley of Flowers Court for many years where he participated in the judging of the Queen and her Court. Schuchmann in 1980s served as an alderman and mayor of the city of Town & Country where he later resided. Throughout his career Hal received numerous awards from the city of Florissant, other municipalities, Missouri Municipal League and the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Following the plaque dedication, the fourth Wednesday Night Out (WNO) will begin at 6 p.m. Festivities will be hosted by Alex Vogt State Farm Insurance, Bunkers Tavern, Citizens National Bank of Florissant, Kay Bee Electric and Stems Florist. The theme is “Dancing, Art & Water in the Streets” from 6 to 9 p.m. between 201- 302 rue St. Francois (beginning at Stems Florist). A collaboration of youth organizations is hosting an afternoon of interactive leadership training The inaugural Youth Empowerment Summit (YES) will be on Aug. 24 from noon to 4 p.m. in Bellerive Hall at the University of Missouri – St. Louis. Youth attending YES will learn leadership skills and obtain the training and support they need to make positive changes in their schools and communities.

Participants will also generate suggestions to improve policies effecting youth in the region. YES is free to all teens 13-19 years old.

“I have many experiences with youth summits. My main hope is that this summit will spark an interest in policies that affect youth to empower them to become active members of their communities,” says Tony Merritt II, a sophomore at Webster University and an alum of both the MU Extension 4-H Youth Futures College Readiness Program and the Ferguson Youth Advisory Board. Mr. Merritt graduated from McCluer High School in 2018.

One hundred teens are expected to attend YES from school districts across the St. Louis region. Organizers are providing transportation to help participants travel from their home communities to UMSL and back. Participants will have the opportunity to select training on one of the following leadership topics: Skills for Success; Creative Thinking & Decision Making; and Dealing with Conflict. Policy suggestions will center on Educational Access & Equity; Diversity & Inclusion; Housing; and Law Enforcement & Community Engagement. At the conclusion of the summit, the teens will present their policy suggestions to a panel of decision makers to help ensure their work results in action.

24th Annual Big Muddy Blues Festival returns to Laclede’s Landing for Labor Day Weekend St. Louis’ historic Laclede’s Landing is once again gearing up for the region’s largest, one-of-a-kind Blues music events of the year.

Coming on the heels of the widely popular Blues at the Arch, a free concert series featuring local, regional and nationally renowned Blues acts, the Big Muddy Blues Festival provides a platform for a wide range of artists who represent extensions of the Blues genre, such as, Soul, R&B, Rock, Gospel and Jazz, attracting an eclectic audience with the intention of celebrating St. Louis as one of the best Blues scenes in the world. This year’s festival will be no exception, and it takes place Aug. 31 from 2 – 11 p.m., with a powerhouse of Blues entertainment packed into a single day that will be free for all to enjoy.

Now in its 24th year, the Big Muddy Blues Festival will showcase nine hours of world-class musical entertainment with seven bands hitting the main stage on the cobblestone streets of Laclede’s Landing while boasting the Gateway Arch and Big Muddy itself as the iconic river backdrop for the event.

Gateway Arch National Park celebrates 50th Anniversary of Apollo with ‘Gateway to the Stars’ Gateway Arch National Park continues the 10th season of its successful Gateway to the Stars program on Saturday, Aug. 17 with a special presentation highlighting the 50-year anniversary of the moon landing as well as telescope viewing of the moon and planets.

At 8 p.m., Washington University scientist Dr. Ryan Clegg-Watkins will present “50 Years Since Apollo,” a look at the past, present and future of exploration of the moon. This program will be held in the Education Classroom, located on the lower level of the Arch Visitor Center.

Following the presentation and weather permitting, telescope viewing led by volunteers from the St. Louis Astronomical Society will take place at the Arch’s west entrance plaza until 10 p.m. The nearly full moon, Jupiter and Saturn will be visible.

The sky needs to be at least partly clear for telescope viewing to take place. Attendees should call 314-655-1708 the afternoon of the event for an update on the weather. The indoor presentation will take place rain or shine.

Northwest Views: Local celebrity brings light to challenges of living with multiple sclerosis

By Christie Derbin Charles Glenn has been in the public eye for years, but especially in the last few months during the Stanley Cup playoffs. St. Louisans and even hockey fans across the U.S. got to know Charles and learn of his struggles with multiple sclerosis (MS). Charles, who has served as the national anthem singer for the St. Louis Blues Hockey Team, has been very open about

the fact that he has MS and is retiring early due to it.

It strikes me as incredibly brave for Charles to be so open about living with this chronic condition and in doing so, bringing light to the disease. More people know what MS is and understand that even though a person may look great on the outside, they are dealing with a lot of symptoms like fatigue, impaired vision, movement, cognitive function – and more, on the inside. Not all people experience these symptoms specifically, but unfortunately retiring early is all too common for people living with MS. Charles was recently honored at the National MS Society’s On The Move luncheon where he received the Man of Courage award for his efforts in strengthening our local community. It’s an attitude that we should all do what we can, while we can, to live our best life possible.

Jim Butler Kia donates 2020 Kia Soul to local cancer charity Pink Ribbon Girls Jim Butler Kia, a St. Louis-area Kia dealership and part of the Jim Butler Auto Group, donated a 2020 Kia Soul to Pink Ribbon Girls (www.pinkribbongirls.org), a charity that helps individuals who are battling breast and gynecological cancers by providing free direct services of healthy meals, housecleaning, rides to treatment and peer support.

Started and headquartered in Ohio, Pink Ribbon Girls opened its St. Louis area operation in October 2018. The St. Louis operation serves individuals within a 40-mile radius of St. Louis City.

Michele Sowers, a breast cancer survivor, wife of Jim Butler Kia President Brad Sowers and catalyst for this donation, offers a very personal viewpoint.

“I was diagnosed with breast cancer last year. When I was approached by two friends who volunteer for Pink Ribbon Girls and learned more about the group’s mission, I was inspired to contribute. I cannot imagine going through treatments and daily chores without the daily help of my husband, kids and friends. This cause is very personal to me,” she said.

Operation Food Search receives donations of food and cash from businesses CANstruction, a design/build charity competition, recently donated more than 25,000 pounds of non-perishable food to Operation Food Search (OFS) valued at over $42,000.

The collected cans represent enough for OFS to feed 6,305 people for one day.

OFS also recently received $30,000 from Bank of America. OFS will use this grant to support its summer meals program, which ensures that children 18 years of age and younger continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session.

The Bank of America funding will enable OFS to expand its partnerships in St. Louis County, St. Louis City and surrounding counties with a goal to increase child participation rates. Since the program began in 2012, OFS and community partners have served more than 350,000 meals.

“Hunger negatively impacts education, health and the economic vitality of our state both now and for future generations,” said OFS’s Executive Director Kristen Wild. “Our program works thanks to the participation of companies like Bank of America because they recognize childhood hunger is a regional issue that needs to be eliminated.”

Wild added that, according to Feeding America’s 2019 Map the Meal Gap Report, 241,830 Missouri children live under the shadow of hunger including approximately 125,580 children in the St. Louis metropolitan area.

OFS’s Friends Board, a diverse group of young professionals vested in feeding the community’s hungry, is presenting the event which features a variety of local food and drink tastings.

There will be a silent auction, as well as raffle tickets available for purchase.

Proceeds from Party for Packs will support Operation Backpack, which provides weekend meals to food-insecure kids throughout the school year.

Aug. 16: Food Truck Knight

Knights of Columbus Duchesne Council #2951 and the city of Florissant will be co-sponsoring a Food Truck Knight on from 5 to 9 p.m. on the lot near the Old St. Ferdinand Shrine located at 50 rue St. Francois.

The trucks will serve until 8 p.m. and there will be life music until 9 p.m.

Proceeds will benefit local nonprofit charities including the TEAM Food Pantry. Patrons are also encouraged

Stanley Cup winners get new facility to practice in Maryland Heights The Centene Community Ice Center (CCIC) is located at 750 Casino Center Drive (near Hollywood Casino) with the 277,000 square feet facility featuring four ice rinks for all ice sports, a strength and conditioning center and skills development areas.

The center includes spaces for public skating, training and special events for athletes of all abilities. The facility will be the official practice home of the 2018/2019 Stanley Cup Winner St. Louis Blues National Hockey League team.

In addition to the hockey development facilities, an event center with 2,500 seats will support local university and other ice sport programs. A covered outdoor rink will offer an inviting atmosphere for the general public to skate in the winter months and enjoy community events like concerts, festivals, and markets in the warmer months.

Women’s Volleyball team earn academic honors at UMSL The University of Missouri-St. Louis volleyball team has been selected as a recipient of the 2018-19 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award, as announced by the organization.

Additionally, the Tritons were named to the AVCA’s Team Academic Honor Roll, which signifies a top-25 combined team GPA among Division II schools. The team recorded a combined GPA of 3.71 during the 2018-19 academic year.

Infielder Zach Lavy delivered the walk-off single in the home half of the 10th inning of the opener for the exciting finish. Reliever Jason Zgardowski (21) earned the win, retiring all six hitters he faced.

Lavy’s blast in the bottom of the fifth gave the Rascals the lead for good in the nightcap. Andrew Vernon allowed a leadoff double in the top of the seventh, but retired the next three hitters in order to earn the save.

FYI…when teams play a doubleheader in the Frontier League, each game is only a regulation, seven inning contest.

Chinese Mandarin Pasta Salad Bento Box

Fill in the blank squares in the grid, making sure that every row, column and 3-by-3 box includes all the digits 1 through 9.

Prep time: 20 minutes | Servings: 1

Ingredients 16 ounces rotini pasta 6 mini sweet peppers, sliced 3 mandarin oranges, peeled and segmented 3 green onions, sliced 2 cups baby spinach, chopped 1/2 cup matchstick carrots 1/2 cup sesame ginger dressing 1/4 cup chow mein noodles

1 kiwi, peeled and sliced 1/2 cup steamed edamame Directions: Cook pasta according to package directions.

Drain and rinse with cool water.

In large bowl, mix pasta, peppers, oranges, green onions, spinach, carrots and dressing. Toss to coat well. Top with chow mein noodles.

Place in lunchbox with kiwi and edamame.

Turkey Taco Salad Bento Box Prep time: 10 minutes | Servings: 1

Ingredients 1 cup chopped romaine lettuce 1/4 cup cooked turkey meat, seasoned with taco seasoning 2 tablespoons shredded cheese 4 cherry tomatoes, quartered 2 tablespoons guacamole 1 ounce tortilla chips

Directions: Assemble taco salad with lettuce, taco meat, cheese and tomatoes.

Place in lunchbox with guacamole and chips.

Ben Affleck, Pattinson’s immediate predecessor, didn’t seem to have a real handle on the character, but Pattinson has the chops to do well here. The DCU has enjoyed great success with the solo “Wonder Woman” and “Aquaman” films, so this franchise actor is on track to help make “The Batman” a hit.

‘Yeggs’ is a comic series about Robert and Bill, two rabbits who have opened their own egg franchise in the Midwest (St. Louis area). We follow their day to day lives, watching as they go about the hectic task of preparing for their one big day every year. Moore On Life It says on the calendar that as a world we must come together and devote our time, energy and resources to pay homage to the most worthy and deserving in our society. Of course, it’s International Cat Day. “Hey kitties,” I yell at my two fur wads.

“It’s International Cat Day!” The skinny one awoke from its hourly slumber and said, (Yes, my cats can talk; can’t they all?) “Will there be a big parade where all of the dogs on earth bow and toss bouquets of catnip as we go by on our golden tufted thrones?”

“No,” I say, “But you did get a big mention in Wikipedia.”

The fat one lifted his head up from licking himself and balked in disgust then said, “Hmmph.

When it’s rightly deemed Intergalactic Cat Day, give me a nudge otherwise rub my underbelly and bring me more kibble. Oh, and do make sure it’s fishy-flavored kibble and that there are no leftover beef-flavored ones lingering about because, not only is it International Cat Day, it’s also Thursday – salmon day.”

Years ago when I saved these abandoned strays, I thought I’d be bringing in two grateful orphans whose remaining days would be spent repaying their rescuer with undying gratitude. Not so much.

I carried the sassy beasts into their new home.

They took a brief look around then turned to me and said, “It’s sufficient for our needs. You may stay, but only on trial basis. Keep the noise to a minimum and make sure breakfast is served

promptly at eight… with a smile.”

From then on it’s been like walking on egg shells. I always have to watch my words.

“Here babies, I brought you some nice leftover prime rib in a doggy bag.”

“A doggy-what?!” the fat one cried, “I’d rather slurp up the hairball I just hacked on the carpet!”

Then there was the time I tried to teach them to stop scratching on the furniture. I just completed their training and said, “Good boys. I guess you really can teach old dogs new tricks.”

They both hissed at me then clawed up my new throw pillows.

“That does it!” I yelled. “You’re both in the doghouse!”

My husband’s favorite recliner turned into a pile of shredded bird-nesting material.

I would have stopped them, but I had to run to the store. It was Thursday – salmon day.
