In preparation to welcome students back, PTSA members and teachers at Hazelwood East Middle, Northwest Middle and Southeast Middle schools participated in Community Walk events. The purpose of the community walk is to bridge the communication gap between home and school. It is also an opportunity for HSD staff ’s first interaction with students and their families to be a positive one. The approach is personalized by staff going door-to-door introducing themselves and inviting families to Meetthe-Teacher/Open House nights. The intended outcome for community walk events is for parents to feel welcome and valued as a part of the educational process. This is the first year teachers at
NWMS have participated in this activity; SEMS and EMS have been participating in community walks for several years. Dr. Katy Chambers, principal at HNWMS, said teachers are using the theme “discovering connections” to guide their work this year, and carried the theme into the community walk. “One of the connections that we are hoping to discover is between Northwest staff and Northwest families,” said Chambers. “Participating in the community walk provided our staff with the opportunity to have positive interactions with many of our families in the students’ home environments. This was also a chance for the staff to ask our families about their expectations for See COMMUNITY WALK page 2
