St. Louis’ Oasis, an advocate for older adults, is continuing its mission to promote healthy aging through lifelong learning, active lifestyles, and volunteer engagement by taking an active role during COVID-19.

Keeping with its educational approach, Oasis has developed a free online tool, CV-19 CheckUp, in partnership with St. Louis County and BellAge. CV-19 CheckUp, found at http://www. oasisnet.org/covid helps people understand personal risks of getting and spreading

COVID-19 to others based on their behavior. The 10-minute questionnaire requires no personal information, phone number or email address. Results are generated immediately in an online report unique to the person completing the questionnaire.

According to Juliet Simone, National Health and Program Director for Oasis, some questions help determine how severe an individual’s COVID probability might be. The tool assesses an individual’s living situation – single dwelling (i.e., house, or

mobile home) or multiple unit dwelling such as an apartment.

“Those things are variables that can make a difference (in) your risk (for) COVID,” stated Simone. “(The tool) also checks some of your daily or weekly habits as it relates to what kinds of places you are visiting on a weekly or monthly basis. (It) gives you some options like grocery stores, outdoor exercise, doctors’ offices and restaurants.”

Simone shared that one of the assessment results at the end of the questionnaire provides an individual’s percentage risk for the likelihood of testing positive for the virus based on current health and habits as well as the risk for spreading the virus unknowingly. In addition, the tool provides tips for reducing an individual’s risks if they score in a high-risk category.

“One additional component that’s really important,” stated Simone, “is that (the tool) also asks about your feelings of isolation, loneliness, and depression. Loneliness and isolation are topics that have always been important to those of us working with older adults, but I think most Americans have had some taste of what it’s like to be isolated and lonely over these last five or six months.”

Though the tool is used to help individuals

determine their risks for the virus, Oasis’ aim is to continue helping older adults live enriching lives through its various programs. In making the CV19 CheckUp tool available online for self-assessment, particularly for older adults, Oasis hopes to help high risk individuals make informed decisions without losing sight of the social aspect of themselves.

“This is one of those things that has been changing [for as] recommendations as the pandemic has gone on and on and on,” stated Simone. “I think we all in the early days expected it to be maybe two or three months of shut-in and then we would be back to normal. ‘Everyone hunker down, and we can get through this together if everyone just stays home.’ Well now as time has gone, it is obvious that we are going to be in this for a lot longer. Right now, we (must) find a healthy and safe balance of living our lives while also doing COVID safely. So, what I would recommend folks to do is to stay as engaged (as they can) with people they love – family, friends – whether it is church members (or) neighbors, in a safe way. If you are a member of a mega church and there are over 500 people, that’s probably not the best thing to do but if there (are) breakout sessions, participate in that. There is a chart of risks in activities at the end of the (CV-19 CheckUp). Going for walks outdoors is one of the safer things that we can do (in addition to) sitting with friends at a sixfoot distance outside wearing masks. The benefit of being social in this particular case would probably outweigh the risk of being isolated.”

Never take your right to vote for granted From time to time I have been accused of being idealistic – as though that is a negative human trait. In times like these a little idealism can be a much needed relief from reality, so I welcome this assessment.

Ideally, with their vote, all Americans would claim their right and authority to voice their opinion about how their government is managed. There is a chunk of our money that is taken out of our paychecks before we get it, all in the name of being responsible taxpayers. Our government needs our money to pay for schools, roads, police and fire protection, and yes, we have no choice but to comply. We just hope our government puts our tax dollars to benefit the citizenry.

Of course, we know it is not that simple.

If our tax dollars (and bond initiatives) are used to finance education, why are so many of our districts unaccredited? Who is dropping the ball? If our tax dollars are used for infrastructure, why are our roads in such bad shape? And if we fought so hard to get the right to vote, why don’t all of us vote?

It really doesn’t matter who your ancestors were. All of our ancestors fought for the right to vote. Most, of course, gained their independence and freedom in 1776. During the period of Reconstruction, some recent-

ly freed male slaves were allowed to vote.

But that right was rescinded from the end of Reconstruction, when Jim Crow began, to about the 1950s when modern day civil rights began. The Civil Rights Act of 1965 prohibited racial discrimination in voting.

And the struggle continues today.

On average, only 12-16 percent of our residents vote in local elections. It is as though our citizens don’t know that people marched, bled and died for us to be able to vote. It seems not to be important to too many citizens. A “right” that is taken for granted. If you didn’t learn that in high school, stream the movie “Selma.”

My father was not allowed to purchase a house in Bellefontaine in 1957. And he did not have the right to vote. Fast forward to the 2019 Bellefontaine Neighbors Board of Aldermen that reflects the ethnic diversity of the community today. I had high hopes for this board. I hoped they would recognize and honor the sacrifices that were made in order for them to occupy “The People’s” seats.

So imagine my shock when the sign below was posted in our Ward 4 voting precinct that read: “Please Write Yourself in for Bellefontaine Neighbors Ward 4 Aldermen.

The person who posted this sign in my

city obviously had no regard for the sacrifices that were made so everyone would have the right to vote. In essence, this person told citizens to throw away their authority and their vote!

According to MO 115.453(4)(5), a writein candidate must file a declaration of intent with the proper election authority, nor can a write-in candidate be on a primary election ballot. So, because one person does not personally “like” a candidate, they instructed and encouraged citizens to abdicate their power and throw away their vote. That is irresponsibility and voter suppression to the 100th degree. Fortunately, no one fell for that frackel nackel. But it didn’t stop someone from trying.

Bellefontaine Neighbor’s city motto is “Rich Traditions....Strong Moral Values.”

The 2020 U.S. Census ends Sept. 30 You may have heard the 2020 U.S. Census deadline was extended to Sept. 30. When you take 10 minutes to complete the census, you’re helping local municipalities achieve an accurate count that enables the city to access federal resources and receive funding for public projects. Accurate information not only helps local businesses stay open but also promotes economic development, new business attraction and job creation.

The 2020 U.S. Census is also important to local municipalities for a variety of other reasons. The census totals determine funding amounts that state and local govern-

ments receive from the federal level for the next decade.

Accurate census counts ensure that funding is equitably distributed for numerous programs such as Medicaid, highway planning and construction, special education grants, Community Block Development grants, the National School Lunch Program, Head Start and more.

Ultimately, the census is about dollars and democracy.

City Foundry STL announces time for change event for racial equity on Aug. 30 City Foundry STL’s (3730 Foundry Way, St. Louis) Time for Change is an outdoor shop and stroll event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 30 to celebrate black-owned businesses in St. Louis as well as encourage the community to take action for racial equity by registering to vote.

The event features local food in partnership with Taste of Black St. Louis from a variety of local restaurants for take-out only as well as local black-owned retail vendors. To create a safe and socially-distanced environment, attendees must purchase a $5 ticket for an hour time slot between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and masks are required. All ticket sales will be donated to Action STL and Forward Through Ferguson. Guests will enter via the parking garage on Forest Park Parkway (east of Vandeventer on the south side of the street) and be guided by the vendors at a safe social distance.

Asset Manager Will Smith explains, “City Foundry STL will be an inclusive and diverse place for locals and visitors to get a feel for the fabric of our city. While we can’t open City Foundry’s doors completely just yet, we do want to plan events like this to highlight our amazing community. We want to encourage positive ac-

tion and change in St. Louis.”

Making progress toward enhanced safety on Metro Transit

By Taulby Roach Improving security on the Metro Transit system is a top priority for me, the team at Metro Transit, Bi-State Development, our regional elected officials and our law enforcement partners. I am happy to report that progress is being made toward creating the safer transit environment we and our customers demand.

The steps being taken are outlined in a Comprehensive Metro Security Strategy agreed to by regional leadership, police partners and Metro, and unanimously approved by the Bi-State Development Board of Commissioners. All of the recommended actions fall into six categories, and our progress is tracked every quarter by a third party through a Metro Security Scorecard. The most recent score card from Quarter 2 indicates we have made significant progress in all six categories.

The presence of people in public spaces can be a deterrent to criminal activity, therefore, more people riding Metro Transit can help make the system safer, and any effort to encourage ridership on the Metro system enhances the region’s overall security strategy. It is important to keep in mind that we experience very few serious incidents on the system, especially when compared to the number of riders (in the millions) we move safely every day, as well as in comparison to some of the crime statistics in the municipalities we serve. In most situations, de-escalation and active engagement are successful tactics utilized in our approach.

The fact is, Metro is part of the communities we serve. Our team members, police partners and contractors live and raise families in many neighborhoods throughout St. Louis County, St. Louis City and St. Clair County in Illinois. We are grateful to these individuals because they are your family members, neighbors, and friends who are helping to improve our transit experience.

Our current security strategy focuses on a regional approach that conforms to the federal compact by which Bi-State Development operates Metro Transit. We are strengthened through great relationships with our law enforcement partners who are responding when police are needed to address isolated incidents on the transit system. The security strategy is designed to meet the request of our customers to see more, not fewer local law enforcement uniforms on transit. We now have contracts with the St. Louis County Police Department, St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, St. Clair County Sheriff ’s Department and City of St. Louis Sheriff ’s Department to provide qualified, trained officers to Metro Transit. They, too, are part of the community and are our neighbors who are invested in making our region better.

Today, when comparing Metro statistics to other transit systems in North America, we fall in the middle of the pack. We need to do better than that. We remain fully committed to improving safety and security and will get there by continuing to implement the additional steps in the plan unanimously approved by all partners.

HealthWorks! launching free Fall Great weather brings out many for the ninth annual document shredding event Learning Support Camp With many school districts around the region opting to start the school year in a virtual capacity, some of the most underserved families – who often face food insecurities and lack reliable internet and the ability to provide learning support for their children – are left feeling helpless.

To help provide a safe, learning environment for some of the most at-risk families in St. Louis, HealthWorks! Kids Museum St. Louis has announced it is launching a Fall Learning Support Camp. The program begins Aug. 31 and will serve 40 low-income students in grades K-4 who have been identified as at-risk. The Fall Learning Support Camp is free to participants, but HealthWorks! is asking for community support to help keep the program running as long as needed and ensure these children stay on track with their education.

Beginning Aug. 31, 40 low-income students will call HealthWorks! their classroom. The students are being identified for the program by the Little Bit Foundation, which is committed to breaking down barriers to learning for students living in poverty through partnerships and programs that serve the needs of the whole child.

The museum will offer socially-distanced, safe learning and healthy activities for nine full weeks during the first quarter of remote learning, all supervised and guided by Healthworks! professional staff. The camp will run from Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. so parents can continue to meet their work obligations.

Each child will bring their school-issued devices each day, and they will receive a nutritious lunch, program supplies, as well as secure internet access that will allow them to complete their classwork. All Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines will be closely followed, including a daily health screening upon arrival for staff and students, mask requirements and increased sanitation throughout the day.

The cost to the nonprofit museum for the Fall Learning Support Camp is $2,500 per child, which translates to $100,000 for 40 children for the full nine weeks. While HealthWorks! has applied for grant funding to offset the costs of making this program free for underserved families, support from the community will be essential to bridge any funding gaps and help ensure each child has the opportunity to be a successful participant in the program. By sponsoring the program, businesses and individuals in the community can help the participating students stay safe, healthy and on track with their online classes. Breast cancer doesn’t sleep during the pandemic COVID-19, the novel coronavirus that first arrived on U.S. shores in February, has infected over five million people and killed over 170,000 Americans in five months. This viral disease is our worst health crisis in over one hundred years. Even today, our infection rate continues to rise and hospitals in several states are at ICU capacity.

Families are struggling with the decision of in-person versus virtual classrooms for their children while struggling from historic rates of unemployment. These are challenging times. The Breakfast Club, a breast cancer advocacy group, understands the importance of family safety and would like to stress the importance of following the guidelines below from The Centers for Disease Control, The World Health Organization and our chief scientific officer, Dr. Anthony Fauci.

1. Face mask in public spaces. Face masks are worn to prevent respiratory droplets that can travel in the air when talking, singing, laughing and breathing.

Face masks are most effective when widely adopted by the community. Studies from New Zealand, Boston and the Diamond Cruise Ship report that the rate of asymptomatic infections is approximately

40 percent. An asymptomatic infection is a person who has tested positive for COVID -19 and has no signs or symptoms of the disease.

Therefore, people can unknowingly infect family, friends, co-workers and the community. The purpose of a face mask is to prevent potentially contagious respiratory droplets from entering the airspace and infecting others.

2. Social distancing. Social distancing is also known as physical distancing. The goal is to stay six feet away from others to reduce exposure to the virus. Social distancing is one of the primary ways to reduce the risk of spread. If you are not near others, the risk of personal contact with the virus is greatly reduced.

For the elderly and other high-risk individuals with health conditions like diabetes, heart disease, immunocompromised state and lung disease, social distancing is especially important.

3. Assembling outdoors. Outdoor venues promote a lower risk of transmission of viral particles. Open air venues allow for more airflow and less recirculated air. Additionally, social distancing is easier to achieve at outdoor venues. Nearly all super-spreader events have occurred

indoors in venues of close-contact and limited air circulation.

4. Practicing good hand hygiene. Avoid touching common surfaces in public places like elevator buttons, door handles and handrails. Greet others without shaking hands. Use a tissue or sleeve to cover your hand if you must touch something. Wash your hands after touching surfaces in public places, and avoid touching your face, nose, and eyes.

The Breakfast Club also wants to encourage busy sisters not to forget about important health screenings and maintaining medical appointments. Breast cancer has not taken time off during this pandemic. Unfortunately, just like the coronavirus disproportionately impacts the African-American community, breast cancer mortality is 90 percent higher in African-American women compared to white women in the St. Louis Region.

The importance of screening annually starting at the age of 40 is The Breakfast Club’s message. If you have a close relative with breast or ovarian cancer or a family member with a known genetic mutation (change in a gene) screening should occur earlier than 40.

African-American women develop breast cancer at an earlier age and are more likely to have an aggressive subtype of the disease compared to white women. Screening annually and at the appropriate age is critical to receiving timely, lifesaving treatment. Please discuss when you should begin screening with your health care provider.

Four ways to help transition pets to post-quarantine routines

As states ease COVID-19 restrictions and people get out of the house to return to work, pets around the country may see their daily routines of hanging out with everyone come to an end.

Some dogs and cats handle routine changes easily. For others, a routine change at home can cause behavior issues, nervousness or separation anxiety.

A Suzy survey of 5,000 U.S. pet owners found nearly 70% of respondents are concerned their pets will have new or additional anxiety when they return to work. It’s important to prepare pets for changes in routine, especially those that are new to a home, for their well-being and harmony of the whole family.

Consider these post-quarantine transition tips.

Make a Plan The key to any plan is making sure everyone knows what to do. This goes for veteran pet owners and the owners of more than 221,000 new pets adopted or fostered since March, according to the 24Pet ShelterWatch Report. Pet owners should agree on the plan for their pets and details should be shared with children who help with care.

“Pet owners should make a plan with minimal and realistic changes to help their dogs or cats adapt to new routines,” said veterinarian Elizabeth DeLomba, MBA, senior veterinary services consultant at VetriScience Laboratories. “Start by offering your pets belongings that make them feel safe and comfortable and add small things that promote mental and physical stimulation.”

Practice the New Routine Ease your pet into being alone by spending short periods of time away from him or her both in and outside the home and work your way up to hours of separation.

Use practice time to get your dog or cat used to what happens before you leave for work, comfortable with a crate or other safe space and acquainted with a new toy, treat or someone who will check on him or her during the day.

Before you leave, take your pet for a walk or play at home to get energy out prior to your departure.

When it is time to leave, don’t make a big deal out

of leaving. Say goodbye long before you leave then leave calmly.

UMSL golfer wins amateur championship University of Missouri-St. Louis senior Chris Ferris of the men’s golf team won the 30th Metropolitan Amateur Championship, held Aug. 6-8 at Meadowbrook Country Club.

Ferris shot a 210 (70-74-66) to edge Chris Kovach by two strokes after entering the final 18 holes trailing

by eight shots.

“I just went out and played my game,” said Ferris. “I knew the front nine was my nine and had played the front in six-under the first two days, so if I played it in three-under it would make it a match on the back nine.”

Ferris fired a five-under 31 on those first nine holes before securing a 35 on the back nine.

The Lindenwood Athletic department plans to distribute the masks to all student-athletes, staff, and other members of the university community.

“Our goal is to provide the safest training environments possible for our student-athletes and staff,” said Lindenwood head athletic trainer Kristin Trotter. “The donation of these masks, in addition to all of the other precautions we are taking as a department and university to fight the spread of COVID-19 will ensure that we are meeting that goal.”

Lindenwood Athletics worked closely with Kyle Ayo, a store manager at the local Lowes location on West Clay Street in St. Charles, to secure the partnership.

Looking back at ‘Chariots of Fire’

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work. Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

At the 54th Academy Awards ceremony in 1982, the Best Picture nominees included “Atlantic City,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” the heart-tugging “On Golden Pond” and Warren Beatty’s ambitious “Reds.” However, after that final envelope was opened, “Chariots of Fire” beat out the other nominees.

This film also won Oscars for Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Music Score and Best Costume Design.

The main theme composed

by Greek musician Vangelis later became an iconic piece of music.

“Chariots of Fire” came to mind after I read about the death of actor Ben Cross at age 72.

Cross, along with actor Ian Charleson, took the lead roles in that award-winning film. It tells a simple, yet profound story of strength, courage and belief set against an extremely competitive backdrop. Even though they didn’t win individual Oscars for their acting, I like to credit these two actors for helping make this an award-winning film.

Cross played Harold Abrahams, the son of a Jewish immigrant. As portrayed onscreen,

could breeze by “The Flying Scotsman” in one race, but Liddell beat him to the finish line. A bit shaken by that loss, Abrahams was later successful at the Olympics, winning gold and silver medals.

‘Yeggs’ is a comic series about Robert and Bill, two rabbits who have opened their own egg franchise in the Midwest (St. Louis area). We follow their day to day lives, watching as they go about the hectic task of preparing for their one big day every year. Along the way they have adventures filled with fun, comic doings and pathos.

Moore On Life I drove home the other day to find a crowd including Search and Rescue outside my home.

Posters had already been made with my picture on them ready for distribution. Even the cats were worried. You can tell when a cat is concerned. Their kibble bowl was only half full and they were yowling in full panic mode.

Once in the driveway I fell out of the car exhausted and spent.

My friends and family encircled me.

“It’s her. She’s alive, she’s alive!” They cried.

“Where have you been? What fiendish beast has kept you captive; what horrors do you have to report?”

I began my story: I went to the store to find my brand of soda.

Rumors of a can shortage were going to make my favorite drink harder to find than TP in March?

I wasn’t going to make the same mistake. I didn’t stock up then and used old mismatched socks for bathroom visits. I look at a pair of socks now and hear a faint flushing sound in the background.

At the store, no sooner had I entered the main court when a cart overflowing with items came crashing my way. A head-on collision was eminent.

“Hey, Crazy!” the lady pushing the cart barked.

“Follow directions. Can’t you read?!”

It was then that I saw the labels and arrows on the floor. I was going the wrong direction, but every time I got close to the aisle I needed another sign directed me in the opposite way. I ended up in a never-ending highway vortex of doom. I passed gardening and was just about to make an illegal U-turn when a security guard pushed me back into the maelstrom.

Lost & Found adorable newborn. She told me she had delivered it in produce the week before and was still trying to find the exit.

I needed to get out. I made a quick left turn and was immediately cited by the store traffic police for not yielding to a handicap shopping cart.

Think fast! I removed my mask. Alarms sounded. I was immediately surrounded by a gaggle of guards in hazmat outfits and promptly booted out.

By then it had been three days. My husband handed me an icy drink of my favorite soda.

“How…?” I asked.

“Amazon,” he said.

Cindy Moore is the mother of three superlative kids, servant of two self-indulgent felines and wife to one nifty husband. Her ficticious occupation? Archeological Humorist: someone who unearths absurdity and hilarity in strange and unusual places including public restrooms, the lint filter, and church meetings.
