Great Rivers Greenway’s next project will aim to connect Forest Park to the Arch through a series of trails, parks and green spaces

By Sara Hardin St. Louis is on its way to becoming more navigable than ever with Great Rivers Greenway’s next project, which will aim to connect the Forest Park and Washington University areas to downtown St. Louis and the Arch.

The results of an international design competition will decide the ultimate look of the new Chouteau Greenway, the first segment of which includes a MetroLink station currently under construction at the Cortex Innovation District. In the meantime, Great Rivers Greenway is working to build a Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) of 40 members to help guide them through the process of envisioning and selecting a design that will most effectively benefit the greenway’s future users and surrounding community.

“The work that we do is for the community and about the community,” said Susan Trautman, CEO of Great Rivers Greenway.

“Without knowing what people want or what’s important to them in a project, we don’t have good information and we can’t make an informed decision. When you’re building a greenway or a trail, you’re literally working in people’s backyards and in their neighborhoods and you have to respect that. To do it well, you need to know what’s important to them.”

Prospective CAC members can apply via the Great Rivers Greenway website through

Sept. 8. To ensure that the committee represents as many perspectives as possible, the goal during recruiting is to ultimately build a team of people who will work well together and will end up using the greenway in different ways.

“What’s interesting is that there’s not an ideal candidate because our goal is to have it be balanced and representative of the area and of the region as a whole,” explained Emma Klues, Vice President of Communications and Outreach with Great Rivers Greenway. “I think the ‘ideal’ candidate is someone who is willing to share their experience and have an open mind to listen to others so that they can collaborate on forming a vision that will benefit the community. It’s really about a mix of different people who live, work, play or learn in that area and they use it very differently, which is what we hope to end up with.”

Various resources will be made available

by Great Rivers Greenway to the CAC so that each member can attend every meeting, regardless of circumstances that may otherwise prevent them from participating.

“We want to make sure that anyone can participate on the Citizen Advisory Committee and there aren’t barriers to participation,” said Klues. “We’re wanting to make sure that we’re being as inclusive as possible to really recognize these volunteers for their time and effort. This is an important

part of our process, so we want to be sure that we provide these resources to anyone who needs them, whether that be transportation to get to a meeting or childcare during the meetings, and we also provide food at the meetings.”

The vision of the Chouteau Greenway is made possible by a public-private partnership. The efforts of Great Rivers Greenway and the project’s seven partners will ultimately result in a network of trails and community space that will connect St. Louis and its different neighborhoods like never before.

“There are seven partners, from major institutions to business developers and other parks agencies,” said Trautman. “Seven partners have come together collectively with one vision, are willing to work hard to make that happen, believe so powerfully that connecting Forest Park to the Arch will transform St. Louis, and are willing to put their own money into it to make it happen.

That’s a big statement. We’re really proud that we’re trusted and they believe that the district can help guide that. It’s a great testimony to what can be done in St. Louis if people work together. Collaboration is an amazing tool when you harness it and you get people to come together around a great idea.”

COMMUNITY VOICES Standing up for justice and equality should be a continuous effort

By Dr. Rance Thomas During this divisive and unsettled time in our history, it is time for all people of goodwill to stand up and be an advocate for peace, unity, justice and equality of all people. This is especially true for churches, social organizations, agencies and people who want to preserve our way of life and improve upon it.

North County Churches Uniting for Racial Harmony and Justice and Pallottine Renewal Center with the support of Giddings-Lovejoy Presbytery’s Social Witness Policy Team and the Archdiocese’s Peace and Justice Commission held its third Annual Prayer for Peace for our community, our nation and our world a few weeks ago.

Admittedly, this was just before the Charlottesville’s terrible disaster, but we were also holding this prayer service in remembrance of the Michael Brown shooting and the subsequent riots that occurred in Ferguson.

In reflecting on this, we concluded that the further individuals get away from an emotional event, the more they tend to move on to other events and with their normal lives.

In other words, the longer time away from the event that motivated them to participate in the past, the less likely they are to participate in the present.

If this prayer service had occurred after the Charlottesville event, there would have been far more individuals participating.

The tragedy that occurred in Charlottesville a couple weeks ago reminds us that there are some things that we simply cannot allow attention to be diverted. This is especially true when we are faced with moral and human rights issues. We must continue to focus our attention upon these issues, or we will allow others to change them in a negative way.

If we do not remain vigilant and continue to support these, we will allow those with bad intentions

to change them in a way that will not be in our or our nation’s best interest.

Those counter demonstrators (40,000) in Boston should be applauded for their stand in their support for unity, peace, justice and equality of all people.

They strongly denounced racism, fascism and bigotry. This should be something we all should do, we should not have to wait until some emotional negative event to happen, but it should be a continuous effort.

City of Hazelwood hires CPA to take the helm of finance department The city of Hazelwood has appointed David Tuberty, CPA, as the new Director of Finance. He is replacing Lori Helle-Obermoeller who left a few weeks ago. Tuberty will be managing a department staff of three individuals who have played key roles in continuing Hazelwood’s tradition of excellence in finance reporting. For 19 consecutive years, the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) has presented Hazelwood with an Award of Financial Reporting Achievement.

Tuberty’s credentials include earning a B. S. in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting from the University of Missouri-St. Louis in 1991. He also passed the CPA Exam in November 1990 and is currently licensed in the state of Missouri. Up until the year 2010, Tuberty worked

in the public accounting profession as a CPA. When asked what he liked best about being a finance director, he responded with this statement: “What I like best is that [being a finance director] brings together all my experiences from the past and allows me to utilize my accounting skills for the greater good,” Tuberty said. “I also like the fact that this position will allow me to serve the community and play a role in making things happen.”

Tuberty’s employment at the city of Hazelwood begins on Sept. 11.

Tuberty has been married to his wife, Mary Jo, for 25 years and they currently live in Manchester. His family includes three grown children.

History Museum new exhibit uses larger-than-life photos to create an immersive experience In the late nineteenth century the desire to capture wide images of cities and landscapes led to the creation of cameras designed specifically for producing panoramic photographs.

Photographers used the panoramic camera to capture some of the largest and most remarkable pictures of the city of St. Louis ever taken.

Using these incredible panoramic photographs as its backdrop, the Missouri History Museum developed “Panoramas of the City,” a 6,000 square-foot exhibition that explores the history of St. Louis from 1900 to 1950.

These unique panoramic images of iconic and everyday moments in our city’s history have been blown up to a never-before-seen scale allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in these moments in time. “Panoramas of the City” features seven floor-to-ceiling images. The reproduction of these images on such a grand scale allows visitors to feel as though they are among the hundreds of thousands of revelers on Art Hill for Charles Lindbergh’s 1927 Welcome Home Celebration, or marching down Olive Street with the League of Women Voters in 1920.

The Missouri History Museum’s exhibit team brings the stories in each of the seven-featured panoramas to life with supporting artifacts from its collection. The immersive experience is heightened through interactive media elements, like a voting booth which invites guests to exercise their constitutional right by casting their vote in the 1920 election or interactive baseball cards that allow guests to choose their team and learn the player’s statistics.

“What makes panoramas such a rich historical resource is that they show us views of history that are unavailable to us otherwise. We all know what a big deal it was when Lindbergh came back to St. Louis after his flight across the Atlantic. But, when you see a panorama of over 100,000 people

gathered on Art Hill, just to have the opportunity to see and hear him, you gain a new appreciation for what he meant to people,” said Adam Kloppe, public historian for the Missouri History Museum and content lead for “Panoramas of the City.”

“You can read about destruction wrought by the tornado that struck St. Louis in September of 1927, but seeing a panorama of a street in ruins, with people captured in the frame who are trying to pick up their lives, you gain a new understanding of just how devastating it was.”

In addition to these large-scale reproductions, more than 60 other panoramas of various sizes will be on display, featuring local institutions.

Many of these panoramas will have a “pinch and zoom” option, allowing visitors to search for familiar faces or deceased relatives among those pictured.

“By viewing these moments in time through the lens of panoramic photography, we are able to tell St. Louis’ history in a way that it has never been told before,” said Dr. Jody Sowell, director of exhibitions and research. “‘Panoramas of the City’ reminds me so much of our enormously popular ‘A Walk in 1875 St. Louis’ exhibit a few years ago in that visitors will come away from the exhibit having an understanding of what it would have been like to live these moments.”

“Panoramas of the City” is open Sept. 2 through Aug. 12, 2018.Admission is free.

St. Louis National Charity Horse Show offers free family entertainment Featuring an exciting $50,000 Grand Prix and several prestigious national championships, the St. Louis National Charity Horse Show takes place Sept. 13 through 17 and Sept. 27 through 30 at the National Equestrian Center at 6880 Lake Saint Louis Blvd., in Lake Saint Louis.

Similar to some of the equestrian events at the Olympics, this show brings exciting equine action to spectators in St. Louis with exhibitors competing for multiple national titles.

The family-friendly event is free of charge and refreshments are available on site.

Always a crowd pleaser, the $50,000 Grand Prix takes place on Sept. 17 at 2 p.m. in the outdoor arena. For an up-close view of the jumping action, the Grand Prix offers ringside tailgate parking for $75 per car. Activities will begin at the outdoor ring at noon with face painting, live music and food trucks including Destination Desserts, Kona Ice and Yo!Salsa.

The Saddlebred show kicks off on Sept. 27 and runs through Sept. 30 with exciting performances beginning nightly at 7 p.m. in an indoor arena. The show features the American Saddlebred horse, which is known as the “peacock of the show ring.” This powerfully muscled horse features high-stepping, high-energy action.

Horse Show attracts several hundred horses and riders from throughout the country. The show attracts competitors from more than 29 states, and attracts upwards of 1,000 horses from two different equine disciplines. The combined economic impact of our Show on St Charles and St. Louis Counties exceeds $4,200,000.

The horse show supports Stray Rescue of St. Louis and Therapeutic Horsemanship, a program of TREEHouse of Greater St. Louis. Since the late 1970s, charitable contributions from the show have exceeded $1 million. Dogs from Stray Rescue will be available for adoption at the show and riders from Therapeutic Horsemanship will provide a riding demonstration.

In addition, spectators and exhibitors alike can shop at a variety of on-site boutiques, featuring range of jewelry, clothing, high-end saddlery and tack, pottery, and home décor.

Understanding the weather’s highs and lows

We all have high and lows points in our lives. The high points are the great events, like winning the lottery, to the low points of having to pay a high electric bill because of the summer heat and humidity. In meteorology, there are highs and lows as well.

Last time I discussed the types of fronts found on a weather map and the type of weather that we experience with the type of front. Well, those fronts often are associated with high and low pressures or the big blue “H” and the big red “L.” High pressure is often associated with nice and calm weather, while low pressure systems are associated with unsettled weather including clouds and precipitation.

These two types of pressure have various impacts on our weather, but why?

To understand high and low pressure systems just remember that we are looking at the motion of the air in the atmosphere above us. As air rises, it cools, which often results in water vapor – this condenses into a liquid and droplets that sometimes forms clouds and precipitation. Sinking air, on the other hand, is associated with warming and drying conditions – resulting in fewer clouds and precipitation chances.

High pressure is associated with sinking air and low pressure is associated with rising air. The reason for this is the air flow around low and high pressure. Due to the Earth’s rotation, high pressure air flow moves away from the center of pressure,

whereas with low pressure the air flow is more inward.

Air within low pressure moves upward, which creates condensation and precipitation. With high pressure we have air moving away from the center causing the air to sink. Just remember in the upper levels of the atmosphere this is reversed – so the air is moving away from the low and moving towards the high pressure.

These two areas of pressure help to direct our weather. Most notably is the center of low pressure around a tropical system where you can clearly see the spin in the atmosphere. Sometimes, we even have “dirty highs” which means high pressure is in control, but clouds are still present.

So, just like our lives where we have high and low moments, it is important to remember Mother Nature has similar moments – we just call them weather!

Uplands Park attorney advocates for children in the courts and in the community

By Charlotte Beard Attorney Brandi Miller, once a judge for Uplands Park and now its city attorney, has been serving as an attorney for 13 years. Not only does she serve as a public attorney, but in 2016 she began her own family and criminal law practice following her tenure with attorney Venus Harry’s office.Miller discussed the importance of people in the community trying to get an understanding of their rights to “take their own fate into their hands.” She stresses, “I believe in God – I do…but...I think He says, ‘You do your part, and I’ll do mine.’ So, I’m saying do your part and the rest will work out fine.”

Miller shared some examples of situations she has seen in the community where preventative measures could have been taken in acquiring legal counsel.

“Ninety percent of people that come to me are in crisis. But the crisis began many, many months before that and they didn’t do anything.

When you don’t know what to do, find someone who does. It’s okay that you don’t know, ask someone. I’ve got guys that come to me with $50,000 in child support, they never did anything when they got this order in the mail that said your support is $600 a month; they were unemployed and unable to pay it. They didn’t do anything. Had they challenged it, it could have changed everything. I can’t make that go away.

I can help you moving forward but I can’t undo the [back child support]” Miller shared the importance of investigating a problem before taking on a case.

“It’s more than just me representing someone on a case. It’s usually me having to figure out what’s going on in that individual’s life. If it’s a criminal case, for example, it’s usually several things that led [them] there. It might be poverty, it might be loss of employment, it might be loss of a family member. A lot of times there are mental health issues that have gone undiagnosed…. A lot of times I’m dealing with a custody battle, for example, but there are family dynamics. The underlying lack of employment for some men is the issue, while they’re behind in child support.”

Though attorneys may have different reasons for taking on a case, Miller, who is also a GAL (Guardian Ad Litem), provided factors that her and some other attorneys particularly consider when a case involves a child.

“Do I think that person [is really] willing to let me help them? Some people are not willing to hear the truth and I’m going to tell you the truth. Every attorney is different, but my practice has been what my mom told me when I decided to be a lawyer. My mom said, ‘If you’re going do it, be a good one – be a fair one, be an honest one.’ And I took that to heart. So, if you come in and you say, ‘I don’t want dad to see his kids ever,’ I can’t go with that. I [must] say ‘well, that’s not good for your children because they matter.’ Even though they’re not my client I can’t ignore how that would affect them.”

Michael Dotson, a client of Miller’s, shared his experience in consulting legal counsel.

“Some lawyers only work on your case for maybe three hours a day. [Miller] didn’t just treat me like a client. She’s [personal] with her clients.”

Dotson who was in a joint custody battle for his son, was referred to Miller by one of his family members, and won his case.

Being a GAL, Miller, has special training that gives her a child’s perspective which serves well in divorces and custody battles. Miller discussed the unfortunate realities of single parent homes and how to combat eliminating any mother or father relationship with a child.

“That’s [how] I help the community…introducing people to what’s really going on and not

just the surface.”

Miller takes an active role in various community services which lends to her ability to refer her clients to resources. The resource she offers to her clients is dependent on the need and plays a part in whether she can take on the client’s case.

I’m with the Korey Johnson Foundation – one of the things we do is help kids in need. So, I may say ‘Hey, look. You need to get volunteer hours?

That’s who you need to call. This will help your spirit as well as help that organization.’”

On Aug. 8, Miller worked with the foundation and a team of volunteers to host a back-toschool skate event and supply-filled backpack giveaway for youth at Skate King on Kienlen Avenue.

“I have women that come to me that are abused,” Miller continued. “There’s a place called Safe Connections—a lot of people don’t know about it. It helps women who have been abused. I refer them to that because if you don’t even have a place to stay, how are you going to focus on this case you have right now? I volunteer at homeless shelters.”

Miller, who is also a divorced mother of twin girls, advocates for her daughters in the school system.

“I didn’t know much about autism before my children were diagnosed. I had to advocate for them. Now I [must] advocate for them to get the services that they need. I’m blessed we’re in a good school district, but that’s not always the case. I do my research. I ask questions, I look things up and I participate. If you [must] do one thing – participate.”

Miller’s tenacity and involvement in the school where her daughters attend landed her a spot on the school board.

“I want to know what they are doing; what kind of decisions [they are] making that affect children with autism, especially. I want to be a part of the decision-making process because that’s what allows me to protect, not just my children’s interest but everybody’s interest.”

Miller advises that anyone looking for a lawyer ask for referrals. If you don’t personally have connections to legal counsel, search the Missouri Bar online to find the right attorney to suit your need. The online site gives information about which attorneys are in good standing with the attorney bar. Miller also advises that the potential client interviews a prospective attorney.

“Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Just like they’re interviewing you to see if you’re going to be a right fit for their firm, you need to interview them.”

FFSD board grants superintendent’s leave of absence request The Ferguson-Florissant School District (FFSD) Board of Education has approved Superintendent, Dr. Joseph Davis’ request for a leave of absence. On Aug. 16, Dr. Davis was taken into custody regarding allegations related to his previous school district in North Carolina. Dr. Davis requested to be placed on leave to concentrate his efforts on getting this matter cleared, so he can return to leading the school district as

quickly as possible.

Board of Education president, Rob Chabot reaffirmed the board’s commitment to students.

“Our focus is on providing a great education for our students. Our hope is that Dr. Davis will return to lead the district; however, we have enlisted Deputy Superintendent, Larry Larrew to serve as acting superintendent until this matter is resolved.”

Baked Fish Recipe courtesy of the United States Department of Agriculture | Servings: 4 Ingredients: Nonstick cooking spray 1 pound fish fillets (whitefish, trout or tilapia) 1 onion, sliced 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 2 teaspoons vegetable oil 1/4 teaspoon lemon pepper seasoning (optional)

Directions: Heat oven to 350 F. Place 12-inch piece of foil on counter. Coat foil with nonstick cooking spray. Place fillets in middle of foil. If fillets have skin, place skin-side down.

Spread sliced onions, salt, pepper and oil on top of fillets. Add lemon pepper seasoning, if desired.

Fold foil over fish.

Place foil pouch on baking sheet and place in oven. Bake fish 15-20 minutes until fish reaches a

minimum internal temperature of 145 F on a food thermometer and is flaky when tested with fork.

Divide into four portions and serve.

Fingerling Potato Salad Prep Time: 15 minutes | Cook Time: 15 minutes | Servings: 6 Ingredients: 1 1/2 pounds mixed Wisconsin fingerling potatoes 2 large lemons, divided 2 cups water 2 tablespoons coarse kosher salt 3 tablespoons white balsamic vinegar 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 1/2 teaspoons whole cumin seeds 3/4 teaspoon whole coriander seeds pepper, to taste 4 green onions, thinly sliced 1/3 cup chopped fresh dill salt, to taste 2 cups baby arugula Directions: In large pot of boiling, salted water, cook potatoes until just tender when pierced with fork, about 15 minutes. Drain and cool slightly.

Slice one lemon into 1/8-inch-thick rounds. In small saucepan, combine sliced lemon, water and kosher salt; bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer

until lemon slices are tender, about 10 minutes.

Drain lemons then coarsely chop.

Cut remaining lemon in half and squeeze out 2 tablespoons juice. In small bowl, mix chopped lemons, lemon juice, white balsamic vinegar and oil. Coarsely crush cumin and coriander seeds using mortar and pestle. Mix seeds into lemon dress-

ing. Season, to taste, with pepper.

Cut lukewarm potatoes in half lengthwise. Place in large, shallow bowl. Mix in green onions and dill. Pour lemon dressing over and toss to coat.

Season, to taste, with salt and pepper. Add arugula and toss gently. Serve lukewarm or at room temperature.

Sweet revenge The grand kiddies are still here and my adult kids seem to think I am having the time of my life spoiling them. They accuse me of seeking revenge. Possibly…for the stress of raising them as they grew up. Possibly…they just might be right.

For instance, when I give the little ones an early morning snack, I get snarky responses. They question when popsicles became a breakfast choice. They remember when they were young and not being allowed one until they ate all their vegetables, and the lawn was mowed, and the bushes were pruned and the roof re-shingled.

They vividly recall even then having to share one by splitting it down the middle.

I remark that I haven’t the slightest idea what they’re talking about as I shove double-stuff Oreos into their offspring’s mouths.

Later that day, we came home from grocery shopping. Each of the kiddies had a treat in their hand from the aisle in the checkout stand.

“Seriously?!” their parents bark at me. “We were threatened with adoption if we made eye contact with anything at the checkout aisle! How is this allowed?”

Now as moms, we all know this passageway of torture leading to the cashier that we must maneuver our children through. It is a cruel display of brightly packaged candies and tempting sweets and treats which no parent gets through without at least two temper tantrums. I had to employ multiple threats of taking away all my children’s toys when they got home and shipping them off to deserving orphanages to quiet their rampages.

But the little grand-sweethearts can stretch out their tiny fingers towards anything within reach and in the cart it goes. Okay, so I guess a child doesn’t actually need a Shop-Vac, but when those little eyes meet mine and say, “Googly-goo ga ga,” it’s like a double-fudge sundae with bacon sprinkles – a force that cannot be resisted.

Soon the tiny sugar babies will be leaving. But, I have bought them each a toy which emits loud, annoying, repetitive sounds. They should enjoy that on the ride home with each toot, beep, bang and aggravating musical ditty emitted. This is small payback for the times their parents drew on my walls after being freshly painted; flushed my new scarf down the toilet, and ate the center of my cake that was especially made to impress my snooty book club friends.

It should be a memorable 14-hour-long drive home.

Rascals aim toward wild card spot The River City Rascals play professional baseball in the West Division of the Frontier League with home games at Car Shield Field in O’Fallon.

In the next publication, the teams, which are four of them in the playoffs, will be determined.

The teams that will qualify for the playoffs are the two division winners, not likely the Rascals.

The two remaining clubs with the next best record, regardless of the division will get wild card spots. At this point there are four teams looking to get these two spots and the River City team is one of them. The O’Fallon team’s remaining games sees them play the first place team and two teams behind them in the division.

Sept. 16: Prostate cancer awareness walk

The End of Prostate Cancer joins forces with St. Louis Urological Surgeons and Arch Cancer Care to host the ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk this September. The goal is to create Generation ZERO – the first generation of men free of prostate cancer.

Participants will run and walk together on Sept.r 16 to fight a disease that takes the life of an American man every 20 minutes. Run/walk participants will receive tech shirts, refreshments, and the opportunity to connect with others who are impacted by prostate cancer. Funds raised for this year’s run/walk event will go toward national efforts to provide research for new treatments, to enhance patient support resources, and to educate men and families about prostate cancer. The race will take place at Creve Coeur Park - Sailboat Cove.

Fathom Events brings classics, comedy to theaters

s much as movie fans would hope otherwise, there are weeks when the new theatrical releases just aren’t that much fun. “The Nut Job 2: Nutty

by Nature” and “The Emoji Movie,” for instance, didn’t exactly pack theater auditoriums with families and animation fans. As the LA Times pointed out, the low-budget horror flick “Annabelle: Creation” is one of the few films making money in a pretty weak cinematic crop.

When the pickings are slim, Fathom Events offers some intriguing alternatives.

In addition to big ticket boxing events and operas, the company also presents “Big, Loud & Live,” an event that features talented musicians competing for top Drum Corps International honors.

Fathom Events also is a great place to revisit some classic movies as well. It’s hard to believe that films such as “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” and “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial” first arrived in theaters 35 years ago,

but both films return to theaters as part of “TCM Big Screen Classics Presents.” Other films to watch for are “Casablanca,” “The Princess Bride” and “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.”

Members of the “Mystery Science Theater 3000” TV series continue to attack bad movies and television shows with “RiffTrax Live.” Recorded live, the performances are broadcast to theaters across the country courtesy of Fathom Events. A recent installment showed the group ripping the cult classic “Doctor Who: The Five Doctors.” Earlier additions featured the infamous “Sharknado” movies.

The company also doesn’t scrimp when it comes to animation, teaming up with GKIDS to present “Mune: Guardian of the Moon” and some classic Japanese anime features. Last year, Fathom Events created a stir with “Batman: The Killing Joke,” an animated adaptation of the groundbreaking graphic novel. With mature themes and an

intimate relationship between Batman and Batgirl, this one caused some ripples even before its release.

Fathom Events typically offers two chances to see their offerings and ticket prices are based on the event. A Mayweather and McGregor matchup, for instance, can run as high as $40 per ticket in some areas.
