the 25-player roster. A significant amount of the employees came from the area. Schmoll and the Rascals treated last week like a tribute to the fans.

“We had giveaways every inning and we wanted to do everything possible to make sure everybody left with a smile on their face,” Schmoll said. “It is pretty incredible for any minor league franchise to not only last this long, but also stay in one city for this long. It is a testament to the support we had, and still have.”

Schmoll said the organization is grateful to the residents and business owners who have supported it for the past two decades.

“O’Fallon has been a great location for our team over the years, and it will continue to be a great location for minor league baseball in the future,” Schmoll said.

Technically, the organization will have the lease for CarShield Field–which will still be available for previously scheduled offseason events–through year’s end, before the agreement officially terminates.

The team won its only Frontier League championship in 2010, The Rascals have made five other league championship series appearances.

“When you hear the stories of season ticket holders and fans, it lets you know just how big it was and how important it was,” Schmoll said. “I’m excited to see what happens next (for CarShield Field) even though it is bittersweet here at the end.”

O’Fallon Mayor Bill Hennessy was both disappointed and grateful but went on to ensure residents, “that our beautiful stadium offers great entertainment for our residents in future years.”

But these winter survivors won’t make the full journey – it takes several generations of monarchs to fly north, find good habitat, lay eggs, and insure that another generation will carry on this magnificent two-way migration.

“Monarch butterflies need us” said Tom Holt, event coordinator. “The habitat of all pollinators has been dwindling each year, making survival very tough.” It’s estimated that in the last 20 years, monarch populations have declined more than 80 percent from historic levels. Holt said, “This icon of summer in the Midwest may be gone if we don’t act!”

“This will be the fourth time the event will occur at the Weldon Spring Site. The site has gone through an amazing transformation with restoration to native prairie, which is what monarchs need to survive” said Holt.

World War II and Cold War-era factories.

Today, the site preserves the legacy of the people and site operations that contributed to those wars, the subsequent environmental contamination, and also chronicles the environmental cleanup with restoration to native prairie. LM, the site steward, implements a long-term surveillance and maintenance plan that includes an Interpretive Center and 41-acre disposal cell.

Presbyterian Church Celebrating 200 years of worship in Dardenne Prairie Sept. 18 will mark the 200th anniversary of the founding of Dardenne Presbyterian Church at 7400 South Outer 364 in Dardenne Prairie. The community is invited to join in celebration of this historic event on Saturday, Sept. 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Many indoor and outdoor activities for young and old have been planned.

Dardenne Presbyterian Church’s story began in 1819, two years before Missouri achieved statehood. The original church site and cemetery was located on a bluff above Dardenne Creek, approximately three miles from the current location. In 1823, a log church was built and in 1845 a “commodious” brick church was erected. The church was burned to the ground in 1862, believed to be the result of unrest caused by the Civil War. Members continued to meet under an arbor or in homes until the current “Rock Church” was built in 1868. The land was donated by Missou-

ri Supreme Court Justice Barton Bates, the son of Edward Bates, Abraham Lincoln’s first Attorney General. The Rock Church remains in use today in its original location and has witnessed several name changes of the road that passes in front of it – Booneslick Road, “The Old Trail,” Highway N, and currently South 364 Outer.

In the early 1960’s the area of Dardenne Prairie witnessed a population boom, and new subdivisions sprang up around the church. The Rock Church was renovated, but soon became too small to accommodate the unprecedented growth in the area. A large, modern Brick Church was built and dedicated in 1985 and further expansion was added in 2002.

The Youth Activity Park (YAP) in Dardenne Prairie is opening early for these two groups to enjoy new programs, so grab your skateboard, scooter and BMX bike and ride this state-of-theart course before the park opens for regular business hours.

• “Little Ones on Wheels” for six and under: On Tuesdays, Sept. 10, 17 and 24, and Thursdays, Sept. 5, 12, 19 and 26, the YAP’s bike/skate course will open from 9 to 10 a.m. This program is perfect for children who are new to extreme sports and want to experience the skate park with other guests their age. Participants are required to wear a helmet and have a parent-signed waiver completed at the park before they can ride; wrist guards, knee pads and elbow pads

also are strongly recommended! All youth must be supervised by an adult while using the park.

• “Adult Skate Escape” for 18 and over: On Wednesdays, Sept. 11, 18 and 25, adults are invited to ride from 10 a.m. to noon. This two-hour program allows older guests full use of the course without the presence of the younger crowd. A waiver and helmet also are required to participate.

The YAP’s 33,000-square foot concrete facility features nighttime lighting; beginner, intermediate and advanced bowls topped with coping; a street course; and snake run with scattered ramps, gaps, hubbas and more. Breastfeeding provides the best source of nutrition and the ideal balance of nutrients to boost child development through the first six months of life, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. To support the developmental, economic and long-term benefits of breastfeeding, the St. Charles County Department of Public Health offers a Peer Counseling and Support Program that is led by nutritionist and breastfeeding coordinator Megan Hickey, who is an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant.

“Most expectant mothers start out breastfeeding exclusively when their baby is born,” says Hickey.

“However, the proportion of mothers who continue to breastfeed through the recommended first six months of life drops significantly when they do not get the physical and emotional assistance they need. Our counseling program is designed to provide that support mothers seek to successfully achieve their goals. We dispel myths and make certain moms get accurate information on the process.”

National Juried Exhibit on Display at St. Peters Cultural Arts Centre The Society of Layerists in Multi-Media will be exhibiting its National Juried Exhibit, “Do You See the Arch?” from Sept. 4-Oct. 26 at the St. Peters Cultural Arts Centre at One St. Peters Centre Blvd.

Liaison and curator for the exhibit, Shirley Eley Nachtrieb, said 24 SLMM artists from across the country were juried into this 42-piece exhibit.

The first challenge for artists was to create a piece of art that had an element of an “arch” in the painting. The second challenge was to make it 18 inches by 18 inches.

The public is invited to view these original pieces while on display at the Cultural Arts Centre.

SLMM serves as an educational society and a network for artists interested in a holistic perspective to their art. Its base of operations is in New

Mexico. National exhibitions are held in museums and public or collegiate galleries.

DAR and Thrivent Financial donate books to local schools The Caroline Close Stuart Chapter, NSDAR discovered many local schools did not have enough books for their number of grade school students on the Constitution. Chapter member, Lynda Gorline, obtained a grant from Thrivent Financial to purchase and donate books to the Wentzville area schools.

The National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution petitioned Congress in 1955 to set aside Sept. 17 to 23 annually to be dedicated to observe Constitution Week. National’s resolution was adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on Aug. 2, 1956.

The goal of the celebration is

to emphasize citizens’ responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution; to inform people the Constitution is the basis for America’s great heritage and the foundation for our way of life. It is also to encourage the study of the historical events which led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787.

Francis Howell bus driver a champion of bus safety

While the FHSD transportation Department is new this year, what’s not new is the dedication and skill of many of the bus drivers. For Hannah Scharfenberg, driving a bus is more than just a job. It’s a mission to keep students safe during the commute to school.

Each year, she participates in safety bus competitions to continue her growth as a driver. In June, she won the 2019 State School Bus Safety Competition hosted by the Missouri Association for Pupil Transportation.

As state champion, she earned the right to compete in the Annual School Bus Driver International Safety Competition hosted by the National School Transportation Association (NSTA) where she placed fifth in the nation.

The annual competitions provide an opportunity for drivers to improve their skills and knowledge regarding student and bus safety. Participants compete in both written and driving tests that examine their abilities in a variety of areas, including parallel parking, first aid and more.

“This competition has a lot to do with self-development,” said Scharfenberg. “It helps me to stay up-to-date on state laws and regulations as far as driving a school bus and operating a motor vehicle.”

over the years, and it also has led to many friendships.

“It’s a networking opportunity,” said Scharfenberg. “I have friends from all over the state that drive a school bus and participate in the competition.”

The international competition has also provided her with the chance to meet drivers from all over the United States and Canada.

Those friendships have also been important to Scharfenberg and her professional development.

“The more you can learn from other drivers on how they handle a situation with students, the better. It gives

you that outside look for student management and the rest of your job,” said Scharfenberg.

Scharfenberg, who has been a bus driver for fourteen years, certainly makes safety a priority in her job. However, she also emphasizes the importance of interacting and getting to know the students she drives.

“Some of them want to talk to you and find out more about what you do, and I also want to know what these kids are doing,” said Scharfenberg. “The more you can be connected to the kids, the more they are going to respect you and listen to you because they feel like you care.”

Rascals have chance to make post season play The defending West Division champion River City Rascals baseball club plays in the Frontier League with home games at the friendly confines of the CarShield Field in O’Fallon.

At the time of this writing the team needs to win one out of three games in their season ending weekend playing in Chicago against the Schaumburg Boomers.

As mentioned last week, the team will disband after the 2019 campaign. Time will tell if a future team will play at the O’Fallon stadium next year. The Tritons were one of many St. Louis-area schools participating in the event, which raises money for the Siteman Cancer Center. UMSL raised $6,194, contributing to the more than $180,000 raided by the Swim Across America St. Louis chapter.

Individually top finishers for UMSL in the 2.4 miles included Sergio Santisteban and Rebecca Bechtel in the 1.2 miles at the top of the group included Jon Osa and Seela Wang.

Cherry Coffee Cake Add some sweetness to your breakfast routine with this delicious and easy-to-make Cherry Coffee Cake.

Directions: Heat oven to 375 F. Spray 9-inch round cake pan with nonstick cooking spray.

Separate cinnamon roll dough into eight rolls; cut each roll into quarters.

Place dough rounded-side down in pan.

Spoon pie filling over rolls. Sprinkle almond slivers or pecans over cherry filling, if desired.

Bake 25-35 minutes, or until golden brown.

Ingredients Nonstick cooking spray 1 can (12.4 ounces) refrigerated cinnamon rolls with icing

Invert onto plate or cutting board. Invert again onto serving plate.

1 1/2 cups (21 ounce can) cherry pie filling 1/2 cup slivered almonds or pecans (optional)

Remove lid from icing. Microwave 3-10 seconds. Stir icing and drizzle over warm coffee cake.

Serve warm.

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work. Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

ver 30 years ago, Rob Reiner directed “Stand by Me,” a coming-of-age film that was based on Stephen King’s novella “The Body.” Four boys living in a small Oregon town search for the body of another boy. Their journey is both physical and emotional as each young man acknowledges and faces his individual fears. The boys ultimately return home, but their lives and relationships will never be the same.

“Stand by Me” has since become a classic bit of cinema. “Good Boys,” on the other hand, is a sloppy, ill-conceived mess. In this coming-of-age film, three boys in their “tween” years make serious mistakes and set out to correct them. Unlike the quartet in “Stand by Me,” however, they cause more harm than good. In this instance, the boys, as well as the audience, would have been better off staying at home.

Jacob Tremblay (“Room”) stars as Max, a pre-teen who has a serious crush on a classmate. Max gets an invitation to a kissing party, but he’s nervous because he doesn’t know how to kiss a girl. With the encouragement of his buddies Lucas (Keith L. Williams) and Thor (Brady Noon), he uses his father’s company drone to hopefully observe two neighbors kissing. The boys end up losing the expensive device and only have a few hours to replace it.

“Good Boys” does examine the challenges of middle school, peer pressure and the onset of puberty fairly well. Unfortunately, all

these life lessons and insights are buried in a flood of dirty jokes, extreme violence and poor storytelling. On their journey, the boys commit such crimes as theft, underage drinking, physical assault, criminal trespass and invasion of privacy. Their parents and the other adults in their lives are highly ineffective as role models and disciplinarians.

The dirty humor here also masks the real meaning of the film: be confident and be yourPhoto courtesy Universal Pictures self. Thor has a one-of-a-kind singing voice and wants to be in the school musical, but bullying changes his mind. After learning of his parents plans to divorce, Lucas still helps Max despite the pain he’s feeling. Thor and Lucas’ struggles are the heart-and-soul of “Good Boys,” but the endless jokes about adult novelty toys overshadow them.

Director Gene Stupnitsky (“The Office”) seems confused about what story he wants to tell. Max, Lucas and Thor are characters that audiences can identify with, but having them commit crimes doesn’t make any sense. Facing almost no consequences for their crimes, the boys don’t learn any valuable lessons. Maybe it’s a good thing this movie is rated R so that fewer children will see it.

“Good Boys,” rated R for strong crude sexual content, drug and alcohol material, and language throughout (all involving tweens), is current playing in theaters.

Moore On Life The smartphone is an amazing invention, but sometimes they can be too amazing.

Of course, now we can gather information instantaneously; information which used to take thumbing through a bookcase of encyclopedias or driving to the local library and researching microfiche for hours.

Now we just pull up Google and bada bing – info at our fingertips. For me, punching up Google is too time consuming, I give a shout out to Siri to do the looking for me. I have more important things to do like walking my rabbit. He needs to get out of his cage for a good hop.

We can also order groceries from our phone and get them delivered to our doorstep. No more fighting over prime parking spots. We can even find out what kind of furry marauder has been visiting our backyard each night. It has left a big gross doodie calling card under our pine tree.

Good thing I had a Scat Scanner app which allowed me to photo the poopy present and have it researched with a flick of my finger. Now I know it’s a pesky raccoon.

The smartphone is so handy, but what good is it if I can never find it. We’re always getting separated from each other.

“Call me. I’m lost!” I cry to my husband.

“How can your phone be lost, you’re in the passenger seat of the car? It’s a two foot by two foot space. How many places could it be?”

“Don’t get sassy with me, Mister. You lose

your reading glasses when they’re parked right on top of your head; usually right up there next to your sun glasses. Now call me!”

He calls me and I find my phone in the one of twenty pockets in my purse that I forgot to check.

On any given day, I’ll be in the house turning the rooms over searching for my elusive phone.

“Call me! I’m lost!”

He dials.

My back pocket starts to ring. Of course; the one place I forgot to check.

Just in time too. I’ve got to hitch my bunny into his collar and leash and take him for a hop. Okay inventors. You would think there would be an app for that.

Ridiculous you say? Umm, did I mention there’s a crap app?
