By Sara Hardin Over the long Labor Day weekend while grills were sizzling and cornhole tournaments were underway, two women were lacing up their skates and making their way clear across the state of Missouri to raise money for multiple sclerosis (MS) research.

Melissa Dittberner and Dallis Meyer skated as a team of two for Sk8 the State for MS, which over the course of the last seven years has raised over $25,000 towards research of the disease. The duo started their trek in Hannibal and ended up in St. Joseph with a goal of averaging about 50 miles per day over the course of four days. The motivation for completing such a grueling journey is deeply personal for many who have participated in Sk8 the State, the same of which can be said for Meyer, the event’s newest participant.

“My dad has had MS since 1994,” explained Meyer. “When I was in my early 20’s, I ended up becoming his guardian. He needed a lot of help. At the time when he was first diagnosed, there weren’t any treatments for it, just medication to help ease the symptoms. He was only supposed to live five more years at that point.

He passed away two years ago, so he outlived his diagnosis by at least 15 years. Melissa and I have been friends through the roller derby community. When my dad passed away, she asked if I’d like to join the team. I feel really honored to be able to help continue to find ways to raise awareness and funds towards

research. 100 percent of what we raise goes to research, we don’t see or touch any of it. It’s very exciting.”

Dittberner, who founded Sk8 the State, was inspired by the charitable nature of the roller derby community to initiate her own event to raise funds and awareness for MS after becoming aware of its devastating effects on the

lives of those around her.

“A lot of what we do in roller derby is raise funds for local charities,” said Dittberner.

COMMUNITY VOICES Mentoring is a two-way street

By Jessica Denham As the weather beings to cool down and the end of summer draws near, many people are starting to take on new challenges. They’re starting new workout plans, thinking about finding a new job or even thinking about going back to school.

Over the past few weeks, I have been approached by several people, in different stages of their lives, who are looking for guidance when deciding what their next move should be. I meet with a senior in high school who is struggling to decide if they want to go to college next year or go straight into the workforce. I had coffee with a gentleman that finished his undergraduate studies last spring, but still doesn’t know what career path to take. Yesterday, I had lunch with a friend who has been with her company for six years and thinks it’s time for her to make a change.

As I reflected on each of these conversations, I couldn’t help but think that each one of them would benefit from having a mentor. A mentor won’t tell you what you want to hear, but what you need to hear. It’s easy to get a friend to agree with you, and it’s important to have a spouse or colleague’s buy-in.

But, where do you turn for long-term guidance and accountability in the areas of your life that matter most? You turn to your trusted advisor – you find

a mentor.

There are many different types of mentoring ranging from formal to informal. There’s the mentoring within your organization, which incorporates the formal things we teach and translate the organizational culture. On the other side, there are mentors who are more focused on you and your success.

They have a vested in your success as an individual as well as a professional, and will offer assistance in any way they can along your journey. Some mentors like to keep things formal and schedule meeting and assign homework, while others are so subtle you do not realize you have been mentored until after the fact.

I have had many amazing mentors in my life, both formal and informal. As a high school student, I had a teacher that gently encouraged me to be my best.

At the time, I didn’t understand how much she was teaching me and guiding me towards my destiny. I am forever grateful for her guidance. Even now, as an adult, I still have a mentor that helps me navigate the challenges that I encounter in the workplace and in life.

Mentoring is a two-way street, with benefits for both the mentor and mentee. The supportive relationship formed between mentors and mentees fos-

ter confidence and creativity, and can often last for a lifetime.

As we acquire skills and knowledge, it is our responsibility to share it with others and help build a stronger community. So, as you prepare for this new season, think about how having a mentor or being a mentor could not only enhance your life, but the lives of others.

With more than 12 years of public relations and communications experience, Jessica Denham is currently Public Relations Manager for WGU Missouri. Prior to joining WGU Missouri, Jessica served as an account manager with the American Red Cross.

Jessica holds a Master of Business Administration from Webster University, a Master of Arts in Nonprofit Management from Washington University and a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from DePaul University. When I was in massage school, our instructor’s wife had MS. I really had no idea the chaos it could bring to people. It blew my mind what it does to humans and how it takes away their mobility. It just bothered me. When I finally decided that we were able to do something for other people, [MS research] was the go to cause.”

After this past weekend, Dittberner has completed a whopping seven cross-state skates for Sk8 the State for MS. She reflects on a particularly difficult one, where she skated 400 miles across Texas over the course of two weeks. Because each year brings its own set of challenges, special precautions have been put in place to ensure the safety of the skaters.

“One of the girls retired and is going to be our support car driver,” said Dittberner. “She’s been there every year, so it will be great to have her in the car. She’ll know exactly what we need and when to make us stop. Even if we’re saying ‘No, we should keep going,’ she’ll know better than we will, so that’s a blessing.”

Hazelwood Green Committee’s prize drawing rewards residents for turning in pledge cards The Hazelwood’s Green Committee held its first-prize drawing for the 2017 Recycling Pledge Card Campaign at a recent city council meeting and five lucky winners won prizes, just for turning in their pledge cards. The winners included Titus Reed, Sue Ridenhour, Jo Barcelona, Linda Spencer and Katie Theriault.

Reed and Ridenhour were the first two winners chosen by Mayor Robinson, who assisted Green Committee Chairperson Ron Darling by spinning the raffle drum and making the selections. Both of them received two home field box seat tickets to a St. Louis Cardinals’ home game. The tickets were donated by Republic Services.

Barcelona was chosen next to receive a Rusty Wallace Karting Center certificate, entitling two people to enjoy a Karting Experience plus their choice of either mini-golf or bumper boats, free of charge. The two other winners, Spencer and Theriault, won a Family Pak of four daily admission passes to Hazelwood’s White Birch Bay Aquatic Center and three free hours of time in the batting cages at the St. Louis United Sports Academy at the St. Louis Outlet Mall.

Those pledge cards that weren’t selected for the first round of prizes will be saved and pooled with the new submissions for the next prize drawing on Oct. 4. This gives everyone who turned in a pledge card a fair shot at winning something.

There’s still time for residents to be eligible for the next round of prizes. All they need to do is to pick-up a 2017 Recycling Pledge Card Campaign flyer at City Hall, Hazelwood Community Center or Civic Center East. Then fill out the pledge card and sign it. After cutting the pledge card from the flyer, turn it in at any of the three abovementioned places and they will be collected and saved for the city council meeting, scheduled for Oct. 4.

New features to this year’s event include EPC collecting TVs and computer monitors for $15 each and Citishred providing shredding services for personal documents from 9 a.m. to noon. Ferguson/Global 1000 to host its sixth hiring event On Aug. 9, 2014, a rallying cry for economic and social change from Lezley McSpadden, the mother of Mike Brown Jr., was heard loud and clear from 2012 gubernatorial candidate and businessman, Dave Spence and economic advisor Dr. E. Lance McCarthy. Both men saw the need to bring about a change not just for Ferguson but for the entire region of St. Louis. Thus Ferguson 1000 was created to produce 1,000 jobs through strategic partnerships with corporations during their ‘Hiring Event” model.

This concept is not the traditional job fair, but rather an event to help the unemployed, underemployed and entrepreneurs secure a position with a company or establish a connection in the tech space. The sixth Hiring Event Weekend is

scheduled to be in St. Louis on Sept. 8 and 9 at Florissant Valley Community College in the Student Center. The kickoff event will be from 6 to 8 p.m. The Empowerment lecture will feature cutting edge technology in prison tech, financial literacy tech, entertainment tech, and local community leaders and a special guest from the Federal Reserve.

Ferguson 1000 has expanded their successful model to four other urban markets: Baltimore, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Miami, with plans to be in twenty-five more cities by the fall of 2018.

The Empowerment feature will be Sept. 8, and the hiring fair will begin on Sept. 9 at 9 a.m.

Remembering the eclipse

A few weeks ago many of us experienced a once-in-a-lifetime event—a full solar eclipse.

The eclipse, which proved to live up to the hype and attention, awed and wowed the old and the young. For me, it was all about the science and the other phenomena that accompanied the solar eclipse.

With my glasses covering my eyes, I watched like thousands of others to the slow Pac-man movement of the moon over the sun. It was inspiring during this time that people from all over stopped what they were doing to witness a spectacular show in the sky. In many ways, observing people watching the eclipse was more satisfying than the actual eclipse itself. It seemed like for a moment the world stopped and people joined together to witness the eclipse.

During the eclipse several additional events were occurring, for example in Columbia, Missouri the temperature at the start of the eclipse was at 90 degrees, during totality it fell to 82 degrees. In Chesterfield the temperature prior to the eclipse was in the lower 90s, but when totality arrived temperatures dropped to around 84 degrees before climbing back into the 90s after the eclipse. Temperature was one feature that meteorologists like myself were looking at before, during and after the eclipse. Areas where 100 percent totality was experienced had the greatest drop in temperature.

Another feature were the winds before totality. Initially, the winds felt warm and right before totality many of the people I was around felt the winds became cooler. Prior to the eclipse reaching totality birds were flying – but quickly as totality loomed the birds departed the sky. In fact, the feeling of night created an eerie calm and silence – many felt like their bodies were tiring.

A 360-degree sunset surrounded us as the moon overtook the sun. Even with the smallest piece of the sun illuminated, the show in the sky was phenomenal. Areas of greys, blues, reds and orange filled the horizon at a 360 degree radius. Mars, Venus and Jupiter were easily viewable during totality. Many of the flowers closed up as they would during the night. The chirping and music of crickets began dancing along with the katydids seeking a mate for the night.

Many of us got to see the diamond ring that as the sun was enveloped by the moon.

Some folks got the idea at the moment of the diamond ring to pop the question of “Will you marry me?” Shadow bands became visible along light-colored surfaces just before and after totality. It looked like the waves of

a swimming pool. Flying insects looked like little slivers of light dancing in the sky as their shadow was illuminated on the sidewalk. It looked as if nature was dancing as totality occurred and slivers of slender grey flickering waves of the sun’s rays slowly disappear.

Baily’s beads were easily observed along the dwindling edge of the sun as the moon overtook it. Since the moon isn’t perfectly smooth, it provided bright beads of sun blinking on an off as the moon moved over the sun.

Street lights came on for a moment and the calmness of evening was felt, but not lasting long the sun returned and the lights shut off.

The moment of darkness and the sky colors will be a-once-in-a-lifetime experience of dusk and dawn all within a short amount of time.

As the eclipse came to an end, the northwest sky became brighter and daylight returned.

The sounds of the nighttime songs of crickets and katydids faded. The winds felt warm again and the short drop in temperature in August climbed upwards. The moon bid farewell to the sun – for now, and daylight returned. For many of us, we felt a little odd – perhaps tired, our necks a bit sore from looking up, and for some who were tempted to view without solar eclipse glasses – trust me its human nature to want to look – had a quick sense of worry that something would go wrong with their vision.

The eclipse was over. The event was done.

Our solar eclipse glasses could now be stored away until the next eclipse for the area that will move through in 2024. The atmospheric conditions will be studied for years to come and the talk about the eclipse will be a lesson for many – the show of Mother Nature can bring together people – a sense of unity and many emotions as the eclipse overtook the sun.

Just think you watched one of nature’s most phenomenal shows. I hope you will carry those feelings your senses provided you during the eclipse for years to come. If you were like me the song “Total Eclipse of the Heart” was running through my head as totality occurred – or was it just me who thought of that song as I was chewing my piece of Eclipse gum?

Lemon Berry Cheesecake Bars Recipe courtesy of Lindsay Conchar of Life, Love & Sugar on behalf of KitchenAid | Makes: 12-16 bars Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs 5 tablespoons butter, melted 16 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar, divided 3 tablespoons lemon juice 1 tablespoon lemon zest 1 1/4 cups heavy whipping cream, divided fresh berries Directions: Line 9-inch square cake pan with parchment pa-

per, bringing up over sides.

Combine graham cracker crumbs and butter, and stir until well combined. Press crumb mixture evenly into bottom of cake pan. Set aside.

In bowl of stand mixer, beat cream cheese, 1 cup powdered sugar, lemon juice and lemon zest until smooth. In separate bowl, whip heavy whipping cream until it starts to thicken. Add remaining powdered sugar and continue to whip until stiff peaks form. Gently fold half the whipped cream

into cheesecake mixture and place remainder in refrigerator to use later. Spread cheesecake mixture evenly in cake pan.

Refrigerate cheesecake at least 4 hours, or until firm.

Use parchment paper on sides to lift bars out of pan then cut into squares. Use remaining whipped cream to top cheesecake bars then add fresh berries, as desired. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Mini Fruit Tarts Recipe courtesy of Kelly Kwok of Life Made Sweeter on behalf of KitchenAid | Makes: 6 pastries Ingredients: Pastries: 1 frozen puff pastry sheet (17.3 ounces), thawed 1 large egg 1-2 teaspoons milk Frosting: 1/4 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature 8 ounces cream cheese, chilled 1-2 tablespoons coconut cream or full-fat canned coconut milk, plus additional (optional) 1 teaspoon coconut extract 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 3-3 1/2 cups powdered sugar, plus additional (optional) Toppings: assorted fresh fruit powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)

Directions: To make pastries: Heat oven to 400 F. Line baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

Add cream cheese and beat until smooth and fully incorporated. Add coconut cream, coconut extract and vanilla extract, and beat until smooth.

Place puff pastry sheet on lightly floured work surface and cut each sheet into 12 3-inch squares.

Gently stir in powdered sugar until fully incorporated. Turn stand mixer on high and beat 1 minute, until fully combined. Add additional powdered sugar and coconut cream until desired consistency and level of sweetness is reached.

In small bowl, beat egg with milk to make egg wash and lightly brush onto each square.

Transfer pastries onto baking sheet and bake 10 minutes, until pastries have puffed up and are golden.

Cool completely on wire rack.

Spread or pipe coconut cream cheese frosting into middle.

Top with fresh fruit and another pastry square.

Dust with powdered sugar, if desired.

To make frosting: In stand mixer bowl fitted with flat beater, beat butter on medium speed until light and creamy, about 3 minutes.

Bye bye baby Stop…wait…listen? What’s that noise? It’s the sound of me blinking. Wow! I forgot my eyelids made noise. I haven’t been able to hear that kind of silence for three weeks now.

My ears are slowly readjusting to peace. That’s because I’ve had a houseful of noisemakers.

At any given time, seven grand kiddies under the age of 11 were inside using my home as a bounce house and constantly testing the acoustics by squealing, yelling, fighting, biting, pushing, pinching or poking. There was no such thing as quiet time.

I would acquire some semblance of calm by issuing each a time out sentence: five-to-life without parole. But of course, their parents would smuggle them a Twinkie with a file in it and they’d escape within the hour.

What I learned: All must have the same exact thing at the same time. The toys I had quickly lost their appeal and were left untouched in a compost heap of boredom. Fast thinking, I gave one an empty paper towel roll to use as a pirate spy glass.

Genius…or so I thought. It became a thing of supreme coveting and envy. Mass whining ensued. Suddenly, all small beings were pushing, punching and poking to acquire it. Then, I was soundly accused of favoritism by the parents of the other kids. I had to hurriedly unroll four full rolls of towels to get at the cardboard middles so as not to show preference and crush their “fragile developing egos.”

Selecting a Popsicle color is life-defining. Apparently red tops the chart as the most sought

after color on the frozen flavored water table. If one child is given the last cherry Popsicle and the others are forced to select lesser options such as gross green or disgusting orange – selfesteems start to pucker and crack and death results. In between, shrieking ensues and parents are notified and accusations of discrimination are flung. This results in an emergency trip to the grocery store whereupon I must sneakily pull every red sicle out of the pre-packaged bags and consolidate them into another one before the store manager is alerted. If caught, I will be banished from the chain for five-to-life without them accepting my double coupons ever! It is a risk I must take.

I sit back and reflect on the last weeks while scratching my head. Wow, scratching my head sounds like someone is rubbing sandpaper up against a live mic. All this silence is gonna make my eardrums explode!

Former women’s hockey standout added to Lindenwood coaching staff The University of Lindenwood women’s hockey head coach Scott Spencer made the official announcement of the addition of Beth Hanrahan to the team’s coaching staff for the upcoming 2017-18 season.

“I am excited to have Beth join our staff here at Lindenwood,” said Spencer. “Beth was a very good college player that will bring a great work ethic and excitement to our group. She has a desire to learn and ambition to be a great coach, which should help us transition seamlessly.”

Hanrahan played collegiately at Providence College from 2011-2015, before playing professionally with the New York Riveters of the National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL) during the 2015-16 season.

The city of Hazelwood is gearing up to host another all-day Harvestfest on Saturday, Sept. 9, at Howdershell Park at 6810 Howdershell Road, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. It offers a variety of fun activities for the young and old alike. Many of the traditional favorites are being brought back, as well as a few new ones to add more entertainment value.

MECHANICAL RIDES

Since the Parks and Recreation Division received rave reviews for adding mechanical rides to last year’s Harvestfest, the department has made arrangements to offer new ones. These rides include the Ballistic Swing and the Revenge of the Sea. The Ballistic Swing goes around and around for the spin of your life! It starts off slow then picks up speed and goes around very fast.

The eight buckets can seat up to three kids and 2 adults each so the whole family can can enjoy this ride together.

The Revenge of the Sea is a smaller version of The Joker at Six Flags. Kids and adults can dream of sailing the high seas as they rock back-and-forth in a pirate ship, going higher each time.

HAZELWOOD PROUD The purpose of this annual city-wide event is to bring the community together and to make residents proud of their hometown. It’s also a great opportunity for Hazelwood to showcase all the first-class amenities it has to offer to people outside the area.

“Each year we organize the Harvestfest event to say ‘thank you’ to our residents for making Hazelwood such a great place to live and to make them proud of their community,” Hazelwood Mayor Matthew Robinson said.

PARKING Parking will be available at Howdershell Park, as well as at White Birch Park located at 1186 Teson Road. Shuttle buses will be running back and forth on a regular basis throughout the day.

TRADITIONAL ACTIVITIES

The favorite activities that people love to do year after year are back again for everyone’s enjoyment. The most popular are the Bingo sessions, sponsored by Hazelnuts. They are scheduled for noon and 2 p.m. Horseshoe Tournaments will take place at 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. In addition, the Miss Hazelwood Coronation starts at 11:30 a.m. Several changes have been made to the Miss Hazelwood program to make it more appealing for young women, ages 15 to 18, to participate. One of them is the amount of scholarship money the new Miss Hazelwood gets, which has jumped from $1,000 to $1,500.

NEW ACTIVITY

From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., event goers can try their artistic skills painting NoCo Rocks or Hazelwood Rocks at the T.E.A.M. Food Pantry booth. This is a new cooperative activity between the City of Hazelwood and T.E.A.M. T.E.A.M.’s Board Secretary and Chief Fund-Raiser Patricia Piotrowicz is talented with creating bird houses and other crafts. She will be on-hand to give creative suggestions and to make sure there’s enough rocks and paint for everyone to use.

This project was inspired by Andrew Harris and his wife, Lindsey, who started NoCo Rocks on Facebook. This summer, they encouraged children and adults to show their pride for North County by painting a NoCo design on rocks and leaving them at different places around North County. People who find the rocks can either re-hide them for another person or keep them if they have a special message on them.

While Facebook is the tool, Andrew and Lindsey believe most of the magic happens when people gather around a table and bond together while painting rocks.

Piotrowicz also will be on-site to accept any food donations or cash contributions for T.E.A.M. She will be raffling off three gift baskets for people to win as well. On a monthly basis, T.E.A.M. supports 800-900 families in the Hazelwood and Florissant areas. This requires strong support from the public and the 36 churches sponsoring T.E.A.M. to continue providing enough resources to meet this growing need. Unfor-

History: The Taste in Ferguson fundraiser event was created by the McGartland and the Lipka Families in 2013 to honor the memories of Robbie McGartland and Samantha Lipka. The families saw that by investing in the lives of young children and of our youth through educational scholarships, the dreams and passions of Robbie and Sam continue to live on. Since 2013 the love and support from so many people and organizations have been overwhelming. The families continue to be blessed by Robbie and Sam in different ways. Robert W. McGartland tragically died in January of 2012; a devastating shock to all of us who knew and loved him. Robbie lived all 20 years of his life here in Ferguson.

He had a love for life and could light up a room with his laughter.

Robbie also had a special gift with children. He used that gift in many ways, by teaching swim lessons, mentoring younger Boy Scouts in his troop, and witnessing his faith to grade school and high school students. The McGartlands want to keep his memory alive in a special way by providing scholarships to students of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta School. Samantha Christeen Lipka passed away at the age of 17 as a passenger in a car accident. In honor of her dream of going to college, her parents, John and Linda Lipka, set up a scholarship fund for high school seniors in the Ferguson-Florissant School District, as well as North County area students who had a connection to the Lipka Family. This scholarship fund was started in 2008 through an annual trivia night held in the spring that still continues today. The Taste In Ferguson will continue these efforts, and the proceeds will not only help many more students in our community see the halls of college, but will lead them to a promising future - all the things that Samantha Lipka wanted to do!

The End of Prostate Cancer joins forces with St. Louis Urological Surgeons and Arch Cancer Care to host the ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/ Walk this September. The goal is to create Generation ZERO – the first generation of men free of prostate cancer. Participants will run and walk together on Sept.r 16 to fight a disease that takes the life of an American man every 20 minutes.

Run/walk participants will receive tech shirts, refreshments, and the opportunity to connect with others who are impacted by prostate cancer.

Funds raised for this year’s run/walk event will go toward national efforts to provide research for new treatments, to enhance patient support resources, and to educate men and families about prostate cancer. “All Saints”

‘All Saints’ is a solid faith-based film

n a market dominated by horror movies and the latest superhero adventure, faith-based films can still make an impact. According to “The Wrap,” releases such as “Heaven is For Real” and “God’s Not Dead” did rather well at the box office. Sometimes, though, a good film, such as the inspirational reallife football drama “Greater,” can’t make enough to cover the costs of production due to poor distribution.

“All Saints,” a new release, has all the makings of a good movie, but it needs an audience. John Corbett stars as Michael Spurlock, the new pastor at the All Saints Episcopal Church in Smyrna, Tennessee.

With a dwindling congregation and a huge mortgage, the diocese puts the church up for sale. Pastor Michael’s job is to simply conduct services, do an inventory and prepare the property for a new owner.

He has an epiphany, though, when he meets Ye Win (Nelson Lee), a refugee from the Karen State in Myanmar (Burma).

Win and other Karen immigrants settle in Smyrna and join the church. When he learns that his new members are expert farmers, Pastor Michael wants to grow cash crops to keep the doors open.

“All Saints” has definite appeal, primarily because the plot maintains its true-tolife feeling. Michael Spurlock’s story is especially inspiring: he worked in corporate sales before going into the seminary. His wife Aimeé, played here by Cara Buono (“Stranger Things”), was an opera singer

and came with Spurlock to Smyrna. In the film, her character is shown teaching young Karen refugees how to sing church hymns.

Many parishioners play themselves in the film, but there are some familiar faces in the cast. Barry Corbin, Corbett’s costar on the classic TV series “Northern Exposure,” plays Forrest, a cranky member of the All Saints congregation. Forrest doesn’t take a shine to the new pastor and lets him know it. Corbin elevates his character above a stereotype, though, showing that he is trying to help in his own way.

David Keith (“An Officer and a Gentleman”) also is on hand as Boyd, a businessman who helps All Saints get their farming operation off the ground. If the piece has any sort of villain, it would be Gregory Allan Williams (“Baywatch Nights”) as Bishop Eldon Thompson. He really wants to sell off the church property and send Pastor Mike over to another assignment, not start a farm.

With its realistic performances and true-life story, “All Saints” is a winner. It’s the kind of film that truly deserves an audience. At a time when there are mixed feelings about immigrants coming to the United States, the movie shows how much refugees contributed to the growth of this country.

“All Saints,” rated PG, currently is playing in wide release.
