By Tim Davidson, communications coordinator, City of Hazelwood Refreshing new activities and entertainment have been added to this year’s Hazelwood Harvestfest, making it bigger and better and more fun for the whole family. The event will be held on Saturday, September 14, at Howdershell Park, 6800 Howdershell Road, from 9am 6pm. Instead of having a parade this year, Hazelwood Parks and Recreation Division is partnering with Radio Disney to bring lots of family fun and Disney magic to the park from 12pm - 2pm.

New Activities Added Mayor Matthew Robinson and several City Council members will officially kickoff the day’s activities with a Scavenger Hunt inside the park starting at 9:30am.

Families or groups of friends can sign up as teams with the chance of winning some fabulous prizes. It will be similar to the larger city-wide Family Photo Scavenger Hunt set for October 5. This Harvestfest activity will be followed by the Miss Hazelwood Coronation scheduled at 10:30am.

Kids can spend hours of fun exploring the seven seas for long lost treasure on the Gypsy Rose III Landship, one of six pirate ships built by 53-year-old Capt.

Thousands of bubbles will be seen floating over the heads of fairgoers when The Bubble Bus cranks up its bubble machines at this year’s Hazelwood Harvestfest from 1pm - 5pm only. The magic occurs when all sorts of devices are used to make bubbles of all sizes.

For young athletes in the family, this year’s Harvestfest will offer a Home Run Derby, starting at 11am and an NFL Punt, Pass & Kick competition from 1pm - 5pm. Both events are free and open to boys and girls in the following age groups: Home Run Derby (ages 7-12) and NFL Punt, Pass & Kick (ages 6-17). The NFL event is being used as a precursor for the new NFL Flag Football program, sponsored by the Hazelwood Parks and Recreation which starts this fall. The Rams’ Street Tteam and Ram Page mascot will be there to greet the kids and cheer the youngsters on as they compete in the various events. The musical entertainment will be performed by St. Louis’ premiere party band, Vote for Pedro, from 2 - 6pm. This band won The Riverfront Times’ “Best Cover Band” award and the “Best Male Vocalist” award which went to Eric Wulff.

They have played to packed houses in local venues all around town (i.e. Mississippi Nights, The Pageant, Blueberry Hill, The American Theater and Riverport/ Verizon Amphitheater). HAZELWOOD HARVESTFEST from cover At 10:30am, the reigning 2012 Miss Hazelwood Kirsten Henderson will be hosting this year’s Coronation ceremony on the stage of the St. Louis County Bandwagon located near the tennis courts. To qualify as a participant, contestants must be young women between the ages of 15 and 19, as well as residents of Hazelwood. A $500 scholarship and other prizes will be awarded to the new queen.

Back for Another Year There are a few traditional activities that have been featured year after year at Harvestfest because of their popularity with fairgoers. Fairgoers can browse through hundreds of donated books in good condition and purchase them at a bargain price. Red Cross Urges Households to Develop an Emergency Plan

The American Red Cross urges families across the country to come up with a game plan to make sure their household is ready for the next emergency or disaster.

During National Preparedness Month, Red Cross chapters all across the country are planning events to help people develop their family disaster plans, get preparedness information and learn more about preparedness in their communities. For more information on events in someone’s area, they can contact their local Red Cross chapter. Local chapter contact information can be found at redcross.org.

“Having a plan outlining what household members will do in an emergency is the best thing they can do to be prepared for an emergency or large-scale disaster,” said Richard Reed, senior vice president of Disaster Cycle Services for the Red Cross. “Things can happen very quickly, giving people only minutes to react. Planning ahead can help keep everyone safe.”

Make A Plan: Planning together is important. Everyone in the household should help develop the emergency plan and know what they should do if something occurs. The plan should include ways to contact and find one another. Include two places to meet – one near the home in case of a sudden emergency like a fire, and one outside the neighborhood in case circumstances prevent people from returning home. The plan should also identify an emergency contact person from outside the area in case local telephone lines are overloaded or out of service.

“Often people are not at home when a disaster occurs and they may not be able to get back into their neighborhood,” Reed said.

“Plans should include decisions about where everyone will go if ordered to evacuate and what route they will take to get there.”

When discussing evacuation, everyone should include several different routes in case roads are closed. If pets are part of the household, they should be considered, including where they could be safe if the family has to evacuate such as pet-friendly motels and animal shelters along the evacuation route.

Red Cross Apps: People can learn what to do before, during and after emergencies by downloading the free Red Cross apps for smart phones and tablets. Tools are available to make an emergency plan and share it with household members. Preloaded content allows users to access vital information even if they can’t connect to the internet. The apps can be downloaded from the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store for Android by searching for American Red Cross or at redcross.org/mobileapps.

Build A Kit: Another step to get ready is to build an emergency preparedness kit. Household members should gather supplies in an easy-to-carry container in case they have to evacuate. The kit should contain a three-day supply of water (one gallon, per person, per day), nonperishable food, a flashlight, battery-powered or hand-crank radio, extra batteries, a first aid kit, a 7-day supply of medications, a multipurpose tool, sanitation and personal hygiene items and copies of important personal documents. The Red Cross also recommends having at least two weeks worth of emergency supplies stored at home. A variety of emergency preparedness and first aid kits are available atredcrossstore.org Get Trained: Everyone also needs to stay informed about what types of disasters are most likely to occur where they live or where they plan to visit. It is also important to take a First Aid and CPR/AED course— a vital component of disaster preparedness in case emergency help is delayed. Operation Christmas Child, a project of international Christian relief and evangelism organization Samaritan’s Purse headed by Franklin Graham, has collected more than 100 million shoebox gifts since 1993. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Operation Christmas Child hopes to collect another 9.8 million gift-filled shoeboxes in 2013.

Marshall the Miracle Dog Visits Cold Water Elementary Delta Dental’s Popular Cast of Characters to Visit North County Schools Delta Dental of Missouri’s Tooth Wizard and 1,175 children from Garrett Elementary and Cold Water Elementary will get together in Hazelwood and Brown Elementary, Lusher Elementary and Duchesne Elementary in Florissant. The kids will experience the “Land of Smiles,” an entertaining and effective educational program that targets school-age children and inspires them to adopt good oral and overall health habits.

Tooth decay is the leading chronic infectious disease among children in our nation, and Delta Dental of Missouri has set out to combat this issue by educating and inspiring young Missourians to adopt healthy life habits. The cast of characters will be visiting local schools teaching students the importance of brushing and flossing properly, visiting the dentist, eating right, exercising daily and making healthy choices. Thanks to the newly-established collaboration with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services’ (DHSS) Preventive Services Program, the shows taking place as part of the annual tour will also underscore the importance of fluoride varnishes. Once again, Cold Water Elementary hosted Character Camp for students; however, this year students had a special visitor during Character Camp. “Marshall the Miracle Dog” and his owner, Cyndi Willenbrock, came to visit with students and share his story. Marshall and Willenbrock visit schools to share a positive message of antibullying, self-acceptance and kindness towards others.

Character Camp highlights Students pose for a group photo with Marshall six important character traits at Cold Water Elementary: caring, fairness, respect, responsibility, trustworthiness and citizenship. The idea for the camp is to help teach students positive character traits while also reinforcing the school’s Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports, PBIS, principles.

Marshall was rescued from an animal hoarder in September 2010. At the time of the rescue, Marshall was found to be in the worst shape of all the animals rescued. He had bite marks all over his body, a broken front leg and a hole the size of a tennis ball on the side of his face.

Thanks to the Humane Society of Missouri, Marshall was nursed back to health. When he was available for adoption, Willenbrock adopted him. She has since decided to share his story with students to help teach anti-bullying, Isaiah Buggs meets Cyndi Willenbrock and Marshall. self-acceptance and kindness towards others.

While sharing Marshall’s story, she asked do a lot of the same things dogs with all four legs students to listen with their hearts and not with can do. “I really like his story because he only has three legs and I only have one arm. He can do anything a dog can do and I can do anything a kid can do.

Marshall is just like me. He had to learn how to walk again, and I had to learn how to stretch my arm.”

Buggs said Marshall’s story helped to teach his classmates why you should always be nice to people.

When you make fun of someone you can really hurt their feelings,” he said. “It changed my life meeting Marshall because I learned that dogs can have three legs and still be just like normal dogs.

Sophomore Attends Electric Car Camp Pattonville High School sophomore Jared Pond recently attended the Formula SAE Electric Car Camp held at the Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla. During this week-long residential camp, Pond had the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of electric vehicles and the Formula SAE competition, a student design competition organized by SAE International (formerly Society of Automotive Engineers). The camp was designed to give participants insight into what being on a collegiate design team is like. Activities included a tour of the design shop, lectures in vehicle dynamics, going through a Formula SAE design process and mock build of a Formula SAE chassis.

Ferguson-Florissant School District’s 2013 State Assessment Scores Announced Results from the 2013 Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) for the Ferguson-Florissant School District released this week show a seven-point gain over last year’s score of 90.5 points. The District remains fully accredited, among the 506 other accredited public school districts in the state of Missouri. Ferguson-Florissant received 97 out of a possible 140 points on the annual assessment test.

All school districts in the state must achieve 98 points or more on the test by 2015, when the scores will be used as a measure for accreditation.

The District increased scores in science, English language arts, and college and career readiness on this year’s test. In science, scores increased by 18.8 percent among all student groups, including those with Individualized Education Programs (IEP), those receiving free or reduced lunch and English language learners (ELL), despite 2013 being the first year the District administered the science portion of the test. The District credits, in part, its participation in Washington University’s STEM Teacher Quality Initiative (STEM TQ) for growth in science. An increase in the number of students taking the ACT or ASVAB test during the 2012-2013 academic year led to gains in that part of the state assessment.

The District lost points in math and a part of the test that measured the number of career and college placements of District graduates. The decrease in math scores was due to slower growth among subgroups in math achievement as compared to 2012, but math scores overall showed an upward trend from 2011. The decline in career and college placements was due to a 1.5-point drop from 2012 to 2013 in the number of District graduates placed in college or careers.

Though the district scored above the required attendance standard in 2013, it lost two points on the measure because attendance figures slipped 0.7 percent. Last year, attendance improved over 2011 by three percent.

Looking forward, FergusonFlorissant said it will not only be focused on increased rigor in course content, but also will use relationships to undergird district-wide achievement. To that end, all 70 administrators in the District will each provide mentoring and support to five students during the 20132014 school year. The District also said it expects to see greater increases in students’ college and career readiness, thanks in part to an Innovation High Schools grant the District received from the state.

STLCC Career Coach is a free, easy-to-use online resource that allows both STLCC students and local residents to explore career opportunities and industry trends far beyond what’s currently available on existing job search websites. High blood pressure ran in Dee Louis-Scott’s family, along with a talent for preparing delicious, beautiful meals that kept everyone at the table for hours.

“I hear many families with a history of medical problems who say they can’t do anything about it because it’s ‘genetics,’ ” says Louis-Scott, author of Believe in the Magic, an inspirational biography of her late mother, Mattie Fisher.

“But for families like ours it wasn’t just ‘genetics.’ It was also handing down treasured family recipes for great-tasting foods loaded with unhealthy fats and salt.”

After a frightening emergency room visit during which mother and daughter learned Fisher’s blood pressure was an alarming 240/180, Louis-Scott’s mom made changes. For starters, she cut most of the sodium out of her diet.

“The first time she made collard greens without ham hocks or salt pork, they tasted awful,” LouisScott says. “But she kept experimenting and after a few tries, she had a healthy version that tasted good!”

A year after starting to monitor her sodium, Fisher’s weight had dropped from 250 pounds to less than 200.

Louis-Scott shares this story because she sees that many families, especially African-Americans, are prone to preventable, diet-related chronic health issues.

She offers these suggestions for some new family traditions: • Explore complementary and alternative medicine traditions, which often include a dietary component. “I’m a big believer in the mind-body-spirit connection,” Louis-Scott says.

“If you find an integrated approach that works for you and your family, you’ll have a much easier time making lifestyle changes.” She practices many of the elements of Ayurveda, an ancient natural healing system that originated in India.

It starts with a questionnaire to determine your body type, or dosha – Vata (airy); Pitta (fiery);

Kapha (earthy). Once you know your body type, you learn which foods, exercises and lifestyle elements will best support your health.

• Cut back on sodium without cutting back on flavor. You’ll be surprised by how much you don’t miss mega-amounts of sodium in your food. People generally don’t detect a 25 percent reduction in sodium, according to the Harvard School of Public Health. Some tricks for reducing sodium intake: When buying frozen or prepared foods, check the nutrition label. If one serving has more than 1 milligram of salt for each calorie, put it back on the shelf, Louis-Scott says. Skip the fat-free salad dressings, which usually have more sodium to make up for the reduction in fat. (And a little bit of fat won’t make you fat!)

Avoid or limit popular high-sodium foods such as pizza with meat toppings, catsup, hot dogs and white bread.

• Establish fun new weeknight traditions, like Meatless Taco Tuesdays. Like adults, children are more apt to accept and even embrace change if they’re invited to participate – and if it’s fun. Instead of a rushed fast-food meal on a busy school night, make it Meatless Taco Tuesday. Come up with some recipes for vegetarian tacos or fish tacos (hint: you can get lots of great ideas online) to prepare together.

Or, older kids can take turns being the Tuesday taco chef. Who can come up with the tastiest original combination? “Another idea is to explore new vegetables at the produce stand,” Louis-Scott says. “When was the last time you had a turnip?

Have the kids help you pick one new vegetable to try each week. You just might discover flavors you never expected to love!”

Today, Louis-Scott points out, developing a chronic condition such as diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease can be as financially devastating as it is physically.

“At some point, one generation needs to say, ‘It’s time to stop passing down these traditions and create some new ones,’ ” she says.

Taking a second look at some “Peeples”

On the movie calendar, May can be the cruelest month of all. For every blockbuster like Iron Man 3, there are at least two smaller films that fail to make even a tiny ripple. Peeples is one of those little films. Produced by Tyler Perry and directed by Tina Gordon Chism, this very familiar comedy was buried in the summertime rush, but it definitely deserves a second look.

On the big screen, Robinson is known for boisterous comedies like Hot Tub Time Machine. His portrayal of Wade Walker is surprising in its sympathy and depth.

Robinson is one of those actors who seems poised for a breakout into more serious roles and characters.

Peeples, rated PG-13 for sexual content, drug material, and language, is now available on DVD and Blu-ray.

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work.

Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

The Prairie Wolves knocked the ball in their own net, giving the Blue Jays the 2-1 lead just 47 seconds into the second half. Nebraska Wesleyan tied the game up with just 10 minutes left in play, sending the game into overtime.

With three seconds left in the first overtime, the Prairie Wolves scored off a rebound to win the game 3-2.

Love Lemon Carol Hurst is the owner of Olde Town Spice Shoppe on South Main Street, St. Charles. She was kind enough to share two of her favorite lemon recipes with us. Enjoy the last bit of warm weather with these citrusy treats.

Lemon Meringue Pies in a Jar (Gluten Free!)

Ingredients: Crust 1 1/2 cup granola cereal 4 tablespoons butter Filling 1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk 1/2 cup lemon juice (approximately 2 medium lemons) 1 1/2 teaspoon grated lemon zest (approximately one lemon) 3 egg yolks Meringue 1 tablespoons Meringue Powder 3 tablespoon+ 1 teaspoon sugar, preferably fine/Castor 1/4 cup warm water 4 mason jars

For the filling For the filling, combine all filling ingredients and pour in to the jars.

For the meringue For the meringue, combine the meringue powder with the warm water in a metal or glass mixing bowl and let set for 2 minutes, then begin whipping at high speed with mixer, slowly adding the sugar until stiff peaks appear, approximately 5 minutes. Lightly spoon meringue atop filling in jars, making sure to cover the entire filling surface area. (I like to use a large one to spoon the mixture in and a small one to “push” the meringue off of it in to the jar, for more placement control.) Clean the rims with a damp cloth, removing any filling or meringue.

Directions: For the crust Grind the granola in to crumbs with a blender or Cuisinart.

Melt the butter and combine with the crumbs, and divide amongst the jars. Tamp down lightly and bake for 350F for 10 minutes. Cool.

Note: You can use your own meringue recipe with egg whites; I find that using the powder, as shown above, has fewer risks of yolk contamination and is easier to work with.

Bake filled jars on the oven rack in a 325F oven for 12-15 minutes. Cool and refrigerate.

Lemon Heaven Cake Ingredients: 1 packaged white cake mix 1 small box of lemon instant pudding mix 1 teaspoon lemon extract Zest of 1 lemon 1 cup of sour cream 4 eggs 1/3 cup of oil 1/2 cup of water For Glaze: 2 cups, powdered sugar 2 tablespoon frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed

Directions: Grease and flour a Bundt pan. Preheat oven to 350F. Mix all ingredients together until combined. Pour in to pan and bake for 35-40 minutes, u- until lightly browned. Cool in pan for 15 minutes and invert/remove. Continue cooling on rack until completely cooled and place on cake plate.

Blend together glaze ingredients until runny, but not too thin.

Add more powdered sugar if too thin. Drizzle lemon glaze over top of cake.

The Ride of the Century...Wasn’t As I sit here mulling over the so-called “Ride of the Century” that descended on us on Labor Day weekend, I find myself cheering on the police’s actions of impounding the sport bikes of riders performing dangerous stunts in traffic. Since I’m a biker, I’m not ordinarily inclined to support this sort of police action; however, I don’t consider these riders to be classified as bikers. They remind me more of Beavis and Butthead, but unfortunately, they’re real people performing high-speed sport-bike stunts in the streets where they insult, intimidate, and endanger others.

As most of my readers know, I’m not the type that believes municipalities when they claim they’re writing speeding tickets on Interstate highways for reasons of public safety. With some local municipalities writing tickets on I-70 and I-370 when they should be cruising their city streets to protect and serve, I wonder who actually is cruising their streets.

However, putting all this aside, if the police see some goons on sport bikes doing high speed wheelies in traffic and arrest them, I’m all for it. I’m also a biker, and these weenies are making us look bad. In case some don’t know it, you seldom see many of these sport bike maniacs taking part in rides for various charities.

You’ll sometimes see hundreds of real bikers in an orderly parade riding down an Interstate with police escorts in support of various charities. It will seldom include a gang of violent punks on sport bikes trying to impress each other by demonstrating who is the dumbest and how much they can foul up traffic. Interviews showed these scofflaws accusing the police of profiling, prejudice and malfeasance because they impounded their bikes for reckless speeding and thumbing their collective noses at the laws of the people. It soon became obvious this was a spoiled generation of testosterone-ridden young men who compare to the KKK of a century ago who didn’t believe beating and murdering minorities was a crime.

I suppose this is always the way of things. We enjoy privileges such as hunting, fishing, riding bicycles or motorcycles, but someone always comes along to mock them. Hunting has its share of gun-crazy shooters and poachers. Fishing also has its share of maniacal boaters and such, and

bicyclists have riders who intentionally block traffic because they can. It only follows that motorcycle riders have their share of blackguards. Most of them are a small minority while the rest are usually law-abiding and well-intentioned. I should add local police to this category as well. They’re being ordered to enhance revenue by preying on traffic by self-serving politicians. Few of them actually condone it. One wonders how much this also enhances disrespect for police as shown by stunt riders.

One of my biker friends claims the stunt crazies are a product of up-bringing...or lack of it. They didn’t have fathers or mothers to teach them how to act. Perhaps he’s right. I was more afraid of facing my father than I was of the local sheriff. Being arrested would have led to far greater punishment at home in most cases.

Succinctly, I would ask the driving public to remember that most bikers actually do behave for the most part. We probably endanger ourselves on occasion but not others if we can help it, and we try to help the less fortunate when we can.

Stunt riders can stay home and plan their next brainless fiasco.

We’re not impressed, but the Grim Reaper probably appreciates the casualties.

These weenies are making us look bad.
