By Sara Hardin On Aug. 25, the Missouri Alliance for Historic Preservation (Missouri Preservation) presented their 17th annual list of historic Places in Peril, a program which helps bring attention to historic properties around the state that are in disrepair or are threatened by a lack of funds. Included on this year’s list is 359 Rue St. Jean, popularly known as the Bellissime-Ouvre house, located in Florissant.

The list began in 2000 as the “Missouri’s Most Endangered Historic Places” media campaign, and was renamed “Places in Peril” in 2015. “[The program] was initially a sort of last call for historic properties, to give a voice to these places that are in danger for one reason or another,” explained Bill Hart, Executive Director of Missouri Preservation. “It’s also to help give Missouri citizens a voice to say that there is a historic place that is important to people, and that it’s going to lost if someone doesn’t intervene. They could be threatened by deterioration, lack of maintenance, insufficient funds, or perhaps the city has a plan to demolish it.”

COMMUNITY VOICES Finish the year on a good note and harmonious chord

By Larry Brown With the remaining time left in this very eventful, critical and crisis-oriented year, there is still ample time to conclude this 12 month saga on a good note and one that creates a beautiful, resounding chord, and exudes perfectly harmonious symmetry.

In order to accomplish this, we must somehow steal some time away from the sound blasts that reach us daily, and rock us into a state that causes a loss of equilibrium. Remember what the poet Kahlil Gibran had to say in his monumental work The Prophet, “The moving finger writes, and having writ, moves on, nor all your piety nor wit can lure it back to cancel half a line, nor all your tears wash out a word of it.”

In other words, when something happens, it happens! It cannot be undone. You may try to compensate for a wrong or a misstep, but once it’s done, it’s done! Now that can be good or bad depending on if you are the doer or the receiver of the action and if the initiated action is good or bad.

The trick on finishing things up this year on a good note lies in being able to take control and implement initiatives that will produce the results you desire and in which you will find pleasure.

You must abandon the maddening crowd and the accompanying noise. Silence is golden and can produce an environment that allows one to clearly see

the missing pieces that are necessary to bring about a fine conclusion, an excellent resolution and a fantastic major chord to end this part of life’s recital.

At the beginning of the year, many of us made New Year’s resolutions, or at least had dreams for a successful and positive new season of life. As, no doubt, the year has progressed, many unanticipated events have occurred within and without of our spheres of influence, that have had varying effects on our plans, resolutions, desires and hopes.

Some of these occurrences, over which we have had no control, may have altered our plans severely and may have almost caused us to give up on the notion that we could have a successful conclusion to some of them still this year.

Well, the good news is, you still have time to make everything end up well. Here’s what you should do.

Analyze each project, desire, resolution or wish and determine what has been accomplished and what is left to be completed. Then figure out what else needs to be done. You may be pleasantly surprised to discover that with just a few tweaks here and there, you may have a sweet ending to your song, selection, cantata, opera, score, rendition or composition. The key is to take control of your destiny and execute your plan. You are the conductor and composer and you must hear the musical blend that you consider a

good sounding chord.

There is a biblical scripture which says “Trust in the Lord with all thy heart and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him and He will direct thy path” (Proverbs 3: 5-6).

Therefore, being an activist led by His directions will result in victory and you will end the year on a positive note and a thrilling major chord! This may sound simple and if it does, then that’s a really good reason to try it, for you have nothing to lose but possibly everything to gain.

‘HISTORY’ from cover Revolutionary War. Now abandoned and facing foreclosure, the home needs proper attention in order to ensure it is preserved into the future. Philip Lum, Building Commissioner for the city of Florissant, took note of the building’s condition and admitted it as a nomination for the 2017 Places in Peril list.

“In the city of Florissant we have a number of properties that are designated local landmarks by the Landmarks and Historic Districts Commission, and this is one of those properties,” said Lum. “In addition, the condition of the property has been deteriorating over the years. It’s got quite a history to it. It’s one of the oldest French style houses not only in Florissant, but probably in the area.”

After Lum noticed the home’s structural and historic significance (it appears on the 1878 map of Florissant, for example), he concluded that its continued presence in the Florissant neighborhood would be in the best interest of the community.

“It is important in age and structural attractiveness and represents the building methods of early 19th century Florissant,” Lum writes of the home in his formal submission to Missouri Preservation, submitted in June. “It provides continuity to the neighborhood fabric and represents an important period in the developments of Florissant Old Town.”

While some properties that end up on the Places in Peril list are past the point of restoration once they are nominated, there have been many cases where historic buildings have been restored close to their former glory as a result of the attention brought to them by Missouri Preservation.

“We do find that more often than not that a lot of our historic properties are saved or appropriate buyers are found,” said Hart. “That’s our hope with 359 Rue St. Jean, is that an interested, preservation-friendly buyer will come forward and purchase the house. We want to be sure that by listing, we are really able to make a difference.”

Draft recommendations available for St. Louis County Parks and Recreation master plan St. Louis County Parks and Recreation will host four open houses in September to share draft recommendations for its park master plan with the public. The draft recommendations are the result of broad public-opinion gathering and an extensive needs assessment study conducted over the last twelve months.

“With park assessment reports, we have a really good handle on the physical needs in our parks and park facilities. Our task now is to look at where the public’s preferences align with those needs so we can prioritize maintenance and improvements,” explained St. Louis County Parks special projects manager, Gerry Biedenstein.

Assessment reports for each park property are publicly available on the plan’s website, www. stlcountyparksmasterplan.com . Results of the random-sample survey of over eight-hundred county residents are also available on the site.

To offer perspective on park and recreation needs in St. Louis County, benchmarking data has been collected comparing the county’s system to similar park systems elsewhere in the country. Compared to peers, St. Louis County does not have as many park acres per person.

The county also has fewer employees (per acre of parkland) than other systems. The comparisons, as well as established best practices, have helped to shape the plan’s draft recommendations.

“We know we can’t do it all; we’ll have to make

choices,” said Biedenstein. “Our goal is to protect and enhance our parks making, the most of what we have and be as responsive to the public as possible.”

At open houses in September, attendees can learn more about plans for each of the system’s five park districts including popular destinations like Creve Coeur Park, Queeny Park, Spanish Lake and Jefferson Barracks Park. The master plan will address these and scores of other destinations supported by the county, from local parks and playgrounds to historic sites, museums and trails.

The same meeting will be conducted in four locations across St. Louis County.

Greater North County Chamber of Commerce collects over 200 cases of water for Hurricane Harvey victims

Volunteers help load water donated to Greater North County Chamber of Commerce to help victims of Hurricane Harvey.

Early on the morning of Sept. 5, a social media post was posted on the I Care About Florissant group about Dalmation Cleaning & Restoration taking donations of water for the Hurricane Harvey victims in Texas. Todd Seagraves asked the Greater North County Chamber office to be a drop off point and the chamber quickly sent out emails, text messages and posted on social media pages asking the community to drop off cases of water.

“We thought we’d get 20 cases and hand them to folks when we got there,” Seagraves stated, “this is beyond what we expected. We’ll be going to their local Rotary Club to help distribute water.”

In less than 12 hours, the North St. Louis County community dropped off cases of water to the chamber office located on420 W. Washington in Florissant.

“We are in awe of the amount of generosity from our community. It really just goes to show

how caring and wonderful the people of North County are,” said Venus Martz, president of the Greater North County Chamber of Commerce.

“We’ve received so many calls of people wanting to help, it’s just wonderful to see so many stepping up to help our neighbors down in Texas.”

The chamber’s Jaime Jenkins recruited McClure North’s soccer team to help load the water into Dalmation’s trucks after their Tuesday game.

The amount of donations added up to over 200 cases of water filling up Dalmation Cleaning & Restoration’s two pickup trucks, their moving truck and their trailer. The Dalmation crew made their way to Texas on the morning of Aug. 30 and will be there to help with cleanup for several weeks.

Florissant plaque dedication for Gretchen Crank has been rescheduled for Sept. 27 The city of Florissant along with Old Town Partners will be hosting a dedication to unveil a plaque in honor of the late Gretchen Crank (which was rescheduled due to the hot weather in July). The Walk through History plaques honor those who have made a valuable contribution to the city of Florissant.

The ceremony will be held on Sept. 27 at 5:45 p.m. on rue St. Francois just west of St. Charles Street on the south side before the Old St. Ferdinand Shrine. The plaque dedication will take place before the start of the last Wednesday Night Out festivities at Hendel’s Restaurant which is sponsored by the city of Florissant and Old Town Partners and is being hosted by Hendel’s proprietors Nathan and Christina Bennett located at 599 St. Denis Street. The festivities will start at 6 p.m. so come out and enjoy a night of live music, dinner and drinks.

Florissant history was Gretchen’s passion. She helped save the Myers House from demolition when Highway 170 was built and later became President of Historic Florissant Inc. Gretchen was extremely dedicated to preserving the Gettemeier House. She served on the Old Town Commission, Friends of Old St. Ferdinand, Florissant Landmark Commission and St. Louis County Historic Building Commission. She wrote and published “Reflections of the Florissant Valley.” She loved her family, traveling and life in Florissant.

Annual conference being held to address child abuse The Child Center, Inc. and the St. Charles County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office will host the 13th annual Midwest Justice for Children Conference (MJCC) on September 12-15. Thanks, in part, to a generous grant from the Missouri Task Force on Children’s Justice the three-day conference offers an opportunity for local professionals to learn how to better serve victims of child sexual abuse.

The Midwest Justice for Children Conference began in an effort to provide quality training, at an af-

fordable price, to other Child Advocacy Center staff, members of the Multi-Disciplinary Team including members of law enforcement, juvenile justice workers, mental health therapists, Children's Division workers, prosecuting attorney's, child and family advocacy workers, school counselors, forensic interviewers and other professionals working in the field of human services. Each year the conference welcomes local, regional and national speakers who are experts in their field who provide topical and evidence-based training.

Physical or sexual abuse cases against children require specialized and complex training from professionals to help reduce anxiety and uncertainty of child victims.

When talking about child sexual abuse the national numbers are shocking: • 20 percent of children will be sexually abused in some form before their eighth

birthday.

• 90 percent of child victims are abused by someone they like, love, or live with.

• 60 percent of child victims will never tell anyone.

In an effort for continuing education related to child trauma, the MJCC will be held at the DoubleTree by Hilton St. Louis hotel located at 16625 Swingley Ridge Rd in Chesterfield. Elected officials, city management staff, employees and residents of the city of Hazelwood gathered at a recent city council meeting to honor “ten brave individuals whose heroic actions clearly saved a life,” according to Hazelwood Fire Chief Dave Herman. These individuals have been working as lifeguards at Hazelwood’s White Birch Bay Aquatic Center and allowed their certified training to kick in to save the life of a 68-year-old grandmother who went into cardiac arrest on July 18 during the heat wave in St. Louis.

The following Hazelwood lifeguards were honored: Anne Fitzgerald, for saving the life of the victim; Juliana Giesler, for saving the life of the victim; Aquatic Supervisor Travis Vancil, for saving the life of the victim; Elizabeth Schneider, for saving the life of the victim; Shelby Croghan, for saving the life of the victim; Halle Durand, for assisting with the life-saving efforts; Zack Taylor, for assisting with the life-saving efforts; Alexandra Boyd, for assisting with the life-saving efforts; Zack Komm, for assisting with the life-saving efforts; and Ke’Aira Robinson, for assisting with the life-saving efforts.

Each of them received the city of Hazelwood’s “Life-Saving Award” which is only given to employees who have performed an exemplary act, resulting in the preservation of life. They were praised for keeping calm and working well together in a stressful situation.

According to Elana Sieger Watts of Hazelwood, “We were there at the Aquatic Center when it happened and it was amazing to see the staff come together so quickly and work so efficiently to save a life.”

Dr. Smith, the SSM Health DePaul Hospital ER physican who treated the victim, Martha Timblin, made this comment to congratulate them for what they did: “A lot of people train everyday for worse case scenarios. But I respect the people who can step up and do what’s needed when the time comes.”

Dr. Smith made this point as well, “There’s no question in my mind that this woman would not be alive today had it not been for the efforts of these young folks.” He went on to say that he deals with serious situations on a daily basis. “When you have to charge an AED to get ready to shock someone, there’s not many things that are more scary. Because the reality is when you hit the button, it can sometimes make things worse,” he noted.

But Dr. Smith commended the lifeguards for being strong enough to do the things they were trained to do and do them right.

“Everybody knew what they needed to do and we were all communicating well,” Anne Fitzgerald said. “It’s an honor to be recognized among these other people.”

Anne Fitzgerald, a swim lesson coordinator, was the first lifeguard who noticed something wrong with Timblin. After laying Timblin flat on the ground, Fitzgerald began compressions and was the point person through the whole ordeal involving two shocks from an AED, which were administered by Hazelwood’s Aquatic Supervisor Travis Vancil.

“When I first walked in, I got a little choked up,” Fitzgerald said. “We heard that day that she was doing better and she was stable but actually seeing her in person was a little bit of a shock but obviously really cool.”

Timblin, a Florissant resident, said thank you to all the lifeguards for saving her life. “It just sounds so incredibly understated and so I’m grateful that the city acknowledged it!,” she said. “Because of you, I’m still here. I feel fine, I’m grateful. Every minute is because somebody else did what they were trained to do and it worked.”

Timblin says, instead of sending a thank you card to all the lifeguards, she intends to write each of them a letter of recommendation, which they can use for college applications.

Understanding the serious nature of mini-strokes Knowing the warning signs of a mini-stroke could help save a life A survey conducted by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association shows one-third of United States adults have had symptoms consistent with a transient ischemic attack (TIA), also known as a mini-stroke, but only three percent called 911 for help.

“Ignoring any stroke signs could be a deadly mistake,” said Mitch Elkind, M.D., chair of the American Stroke Association Advisory Committee.

“Only a formal medical diagnosis with brain imaging can determine whether you’re having a TIA or a stroke.”

The survey showed 35 percent of respondents experienced at least one sign of a TIA or mini-stroke, such as sudden trouble speaking or a severe headache with no known cause. According to the online survey, those who suffered symptoms were more likely to wait it out, rest or take medicine rather than call 911.

Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term adult disability in the United States and among the top five causes of death. However, with proper, timely medical attention, stroke is largely treatable. The faster you are treated, the more likely you are to have a positive outcome.

Missouri American Water presents check donation to Hazelwood Fire Department

Two officials of Missouri American Water, Bradley Brown, Manager of Government Affairs, and Brian Russell, Manager of External Affairs, recently presented a check of $1,200 as a donation to the Hazelwood Fire Department. Fire Chief Dave Herman was elated to receive this corporate gift and said it would be put to good use.

The department plans to use this money to purchase more Mask-Mounted Thermal Imaging Cameras for the face masks of its firefighter/paramedics. The face mask is an important piece of a firefighter’s self-contained breathing apparatus.

These cameras are attached to the outside of the face mask and use highly sensitive infrared technology to determine differences in temperature of surrounding objects. The thermal imaging information is then transmitted to an In-Mask Display (IMD), using Bluetooth wireless tech-

nology.

Rather than displaying colors that correspond to an actual value, the thermal imaging equipment looks at the entire scene and calculates the range of temperatures before transmitting this information to the IMD. Firefighters end up seeing images in colors associated with different temperature levels. The gradient scale goes from black (lower temperatures) to white (higher temperatures). Additionally, red is used to indicate the highest temperatures on the screen.

With proper training, firefighters can use the IMD to locate victims, pets, fallen firefighters and fire sources more quickly in a dark smokey room during a house/building fire. After the check presentation, Capt. Dale Kelle showed Brown and Russell how a mask-mounted thermal imaging camera works.

Local Author Spotlight: Rocio Monroy

Rocio Monroy was born and raised in Mexico, where she graduated as an industrial engineer in 2009. She came to the U.S with an au pair program and got to travel around the country. After she met her husband, she finally settled in St. Peters. Ever since she has been studying English as a second language and creative writing. Monroy’s latest book is “Paisley the Goat.” Counting from one to ten is not easy for children, although Paisley the goat will make things easier for the little ones. Paisley the goat discovers many different things that can be counted at the beach on a sleepless night.

Home Builders Association donates $15,000 to Youth In Need On behalf of the Home Builders Charitable Foundation (HBCF), 2017 HBA President Ken Kruse of Payne Family Homes (left) presented a $15,000 donation to Rob Muschany, chief development officer of Youth In Need.

The donation will be used to renovate two full bathrooms and one half bath at Youth In Need’s Transitional Living Program group home. The shelter improvements will address health, physical and psychological safety, and security concerns, as well as help enhance the home-like environment for runaway and homeless youth.

The Transitional Living Program is a residential program that operates a group home and several independent living program models designed to provide runaway and homeless youth with a continuum of individualized and strengthbased services.

The HBA is a local trade association of more than 600 member firms representing the residential construction industry. The Home Builders Charitable Foundation, the HBA’s charitable arm, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing housing assistance to people or organizations with special shelter needs.

Investa Management moves headquarters in Maryland Heights

After 20 years at its same location, a company comprised of businesses that focuses on mud, wine, salt and snow has plowed a new path to a bigger and better home.

Investa Management – which includes The Battlegrounds, BSR Services, Cedar Lake Cellars, and Champion Salt – recently moved its headquarters to 2451 Schuetz Rd. in Maryland Heights. The company was previously located at 2340 Verna Ave., a nearly 11,000-squarefoot building less than a mile from the new headquarters, for the past 20 years. Investa Management owner Carl Bolm purchased the 52,000-plus-square-foot Schuetz building on 3.6 acres of land in 2016 for $1.5 million.

The new office will be the headquarters for BSR Services, St. Louis’ largest locally owned and operated snow and ice management provider. The building will be the corporate offices for The Battlegrounds, St. Louis’ largest permanent mud run obstacle course; Cedar Lake Cellars, a local winery and event venue, and; Champion Salt, a bulk de-icing road salt supplier. Both The Battlegrounds and Cedar Lake Cellars are located at 11008 Schreckengast Rd. in Wright City. Champion Salt is located at 201 Rover St. in Everett, Massachusetts.

The recent renovations include the addition of a more than 7,000-square-foot salt dome standing 64’W x 113’H with the capability to store 8,000 tons of bulk salt product. Exterior

renovations will take place this fall.

The new 60,000-square-foot headquarters features an expanded office space plus a renovated main warehouse where the BSR Services’ fleet of more than 40 trucks will be stored during the winter months. A 3,000-square-foot training room was designed to accommodate the company’s training program, BSR University, and its more than 500 team members.

“This facility offers all the solutions we need to take BSR Services to the next level in terms of providing the best snow and ice management for our customers,” said Bolm. “Our state-of-theart building incorporates the industry’s most savvy integration program, as well as a central dispatch system which monitors and manages our team during even the harshest storms.”

Cushman Wakefield served as the broker, ARCO as the construction company, Clearpath Development Partners as the developer, Stock & Associates as the engineering firm, Integration Excellence as the systems integration expert, and Central Bank as the financial institution.

“My goal in creating this building was to keep our BSR Services’ team safe throughout the winter months since they work day and night providing snow and ice management,” Bolm added.

“This expansive property also has the capability to keep all Investa Management companies under one roof, which is more cost effective and time efficient when working with our clients.”

Regional Business Council announces additional support for KIPP STL The St. Louis Regional Business Council (RBC) has announced additional financial support for KIPP St. Louis, the nonprofit, national network of tuition-free college preparatory public charter schools serving thousands of students from educationally underserved communities.

“Education is a core priority for the St. Louis RBC. We are reinvesting in KIPP St. Louis, in addition to the nearly $350,000 we have already given,” said Kathy Osborn, president and CEO of the RBC. “We are announcing another $300,000 commitment and will make our first $75,000 contribution in September to help kick off the 2017-2018 school year.”

Beginning in St. Louis in 2009 with sponsorship by Washington University, the Knowledge is Power Program has grown from one middle school to five high-performing schools serving 1,300 students. ”The Regional Business Council’s commitment to funding what works and their passion for KIPP’s students have both been catalytic for KIPP St. Louis scholars and for our growth,” said Kelly Garrett, executive director of KIPP St. Louis. “The RBC was an early advocate for our mission and they have inspired our growth to five schools serving over 1,600 students across the city of St. Louis. St. Louis Community College alum begins tenure at Yale University Dominic Phillips, an alumnus of St. Louis Community College, officially began pursuing graduate studies at the Yale University School of Art last month.

Phillips, earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (MIAD) in 2016. He has had his work at shown at Pitch Project Galley, an essay written about his work by Leah Kolb, associate curator at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, and has participated in several shows.

In a letter written to Chancellor Jeff Pitman, Phillips credits his time at St. Louis Community College as the catalyst to his success.

“Although the importance of hard work was a lesson I learned early on, I still didn’t have any direction. That is, until I got to Flo Valley, and I met the faculty in the art department. I learned early on that FV had the first nationally accredited community college art program in the country, and I came to understand its special reputation. The faculty welcomed, inspired, challenged and mentored me. In addition to learning about art materials and methods, I learned about art history and philosophy. I developed a serious work ethic. I learned how to communicate effectively – both visually and verbally. I immersed myself in reading and became hungry to learn more. In short, my world expanded.

I was soon exhibiting my work, meeting other artists, and developing a strong portfolio. The combination of my mother’s teachings and the education and mentoring I received at Flo Valley led to many successes I’ve enjoyed thus far in my career as an artist,” Phillips wrote.

Mike Shultis and Aaron Fowler, two additional graduates of the STLCC-Florissant Valley art program have also been accepted into the Yale University School of Art. “My time in the art department at Flo Valley has been one of the most life changing experiences I’ve ever had. Without Flo, I would not be where I am now– enrolled, with full scholarship, at the world’s most renowned and prestigious graduate art program. The art department at Flo Valley helped to create a path for me to pursue my dreams and instill in me the tenacity and fortitude to achieve them. The faculty members in that department are the most beloved and appreciated professors I’ve ever worked with,” Phillips wrote.

State Rep. Steven Roberts took time to thank the many individuals and organizations that worked together to make the recent back-to-school event for Yeatman Liddell College Preparatory Middle School a huge success. Roberts said the first annual event was responsible for providing more than 500 backpacks to students, and also was able to help more than 500 students from Ashland, Bryan Hill, Farragut, Hickey and Pamoja.

“This was one of the most rewarding experiences of my legislative career and it would not have been possible without the help of a lot of special people who donates their time, energy, and skills.

Together we were able to ensure that hundreds of school children will have the supplies they need,” said Roberts, D-St. Louis.

Roberts said Dr. Leslie Bonner, Principal, and Full-Service Coordinator Melissa Nash from Yeatman Middle School, as well as staff from Farragut Elementary School, were instrumental in planning and notifying parents about the event.

Roberts also noted that the event nearly doubled its goal because of the generosity of its sponsors.

Melissa Nash, the Full-Service Coordinator for Yeatman, received a proclamation from the Missouri House of Representatives for her dedication to education. She has worked in St. Louis City Public Schools since 2014, before being the fullservice coordinator at Yeatman, she served as a full-time educator and social worker with the St. Louis City Public Schools for eleven years.

“This spring when I spoke at the graduation at Yeatman, parents, and staff shared their concerns about the students having school supplies,” said Roberts. “I am grateful the generosity of our city to help these students start the year off with tools for academic success.”

In large skillet over medium heat, heat 1 tablespoon oil. Add onion, garlic and mushrooms, and cook, stirring frequently, 10 minutes, or until onions are soft. Reserve.

Roll pizza dough into thin oval on lightly floured surface. Transfer to prepared baking sheet and brush lightly with olive oil then spread evenly with Alfredo sauce.

The summer visit of the grandbabies has come and gone and with it came an abundance of learning. There were critical things I must pass on so that those who plan on having children in the future will strongly reconsider reproducing.

To begin with, ketchup is not just a tomatoy condiment; it is in fact a religion and must be squirted on everything from hot dogs to PopTarts to Popsicles in order for that food item to be consumed.

Certain items cannot be shared by little boys – toy cars being at the top of the list. Touching another toddler’s car is the equivalent of stealing another man’s wife in the grownup world. You might as well sneak a forbidden bite of one’s Froot Loops or take the last red Popsicle rather than touch their car. And looking is the same as touching. If a tot steals a glance at another’s car, that sends a clear message that he is intent on car-jacking it. This will result in shrill screeching followed by a poke, push or punch. All three tactics will be incorporated if the tot gets cheeky enough to actually make contact with the car.

Serving anything green for dinner will result in tantrums and the gross greenness being thrown against the wall or squished between the tiny hands and rubbed vigorously on the face area like an organic cleansing exfoliate. Only when ketchup is added liberally to conceal any hint of green, can it safely be consumed.

Getting the kids in bed on time and in an orderly manner and subsequently looking forward to a good night’s rest will most definitely result in someone’s baby shrieking non-stop between 1 -4:30 a.m. because the Leonard the Lamb nightlight went out. This in turn wakes all other sleeping occupants of the house until a full chorus of

screaming from babies and adults results.

Dumping out toys is an amusing event. Actually spending time playing with them individually is a complete bore and waste of a toddler’s time.

As soon as the various baskets are filled with the play items, the toddlers will sense it and immediately take the containers and dump them out one at a time. Then the babies will trudge through the mess completely ignoring all items and begin to wrestle and bite one another over an interesting stick found in the yard, each claiming they laid eyes on first.

Chocolate milk is a miracle bribe given to exhausted parents from Jesus above. The little people cannot yet form proper words and it is referred to as Chaka-naka. Chaka-naka must always be employed to bribe the tots into doing anything from going to bed, to finishing their gross green vegetables to rewarding them for doing a doodie in the potty, to yes, even temporarily sharing their cars.

Chaka-naka also is a miracle drink for the frustrated adults. Although, to have maximum effect, a cup of rum must be added first.

New Ambush coach hired The St. Louis Ambush have named indoor soccer veteran Hewerton Moreira as their new head coach, Ambush CEO and majority owner Shelly Clark announced.

Moreira coached the Cedar Rapids Rampage United outdoor team two seasons and the indoor Rampage last season. The Rampage United went to the Premier League of America championship semifinals both seasons, while the indoor Rampage improved from five wins to 12 under his coaching.

As a player, Moreira is a veteran of 13 professional indoor soccer seasons. He has played for the San Diego Sockers, Milwaukee Wave, Detroit Ignition, Philadelphia KiXX, Chicago Mustangs and the Rampage.

He won three championships during his seven seasons with the Wave, where he played for Keith Tozer, the winningest indoor soccer coach of all time.

“I would like to thank the Ambush organization and ownership for their trust in me. I’m very honored to be part of such a professional group and looking forward to helping the Ambush have a very successful season,” Moreira commented. * New coaching style Rascals marked the end of season as several players depart The River City Rascals play professional baseball in the West Division of the Frontier League with home games at Car Shield Field in O’Fallon.

“Marvel’s Inhumans” ‘Marvel’s Inhumans’ debuts on the big screen

These days, it’s not unusual to see Marvel Comics characters doing double-duty on the big and small screens. Hayley Atwell, for instance, portrayed Peggy Carter in several Marvel movies as well as two seasons of her own TV series.

This month, Walt Disney Studios, owner of Marvel Studios, previewed their new “Inhumans” limited series in theaters across the country.

In Irvine, I saw the premiere episode in IMAX format and, while visually appealing, the story left a lot to be desired. The Inhumans, a race of genetically enhanced individuals, debuted decades ago in an early issue of “The Fantastic Four.” When exposed to a substance called Terrigen Mist, they gained extraordinary abilities. For instance, Black Bolt, played by Anson Mount in the series, has a voice that can level cities, so he communicates through sign language.

The Inhumans also were introduced to viewers of “Agents of Shield”; some established characters on that show turned out to be more than human. The new series focuses on Inhumans that left Earth to settle in seclusion on the Moon. Arguably, the most intriguing character in the cast is a lovable, oversized ca-

nine named Lockjaw. He can transport himself and other Inhumans between any two points.

In the comics; however, Lockjaw’s true nature was revealed, but I am not sure if Disney wants to reveal that big secret just yet.

The cast contains talented performers who are forced to steer clear of the plot holes. Ken Leung plays Karnak, an Inhuman who, in the comics, was never exposed to the mutating Terrigen Mists. Through training and discipline, Karnak developed the ability to sense weaknesses in objects and shatter them with his hands and feet.

In the first episode, he also shows why he is a bad first date.

Serinda Swan plays Medusa, the wife of Black Bolt whose lovely hair can become a deadly weapon. Maximus (Iwan Rheon), her brotherin-law, tries to convince her she married the wrong man. He apparently gained no abilities from the Terrigen Mist but has a loyal following in the Royal Guard. Rheon does a fantastic job with Maximus, as do Swan and Mount with their roles, but the writing is not up to par.

It’s also unclear if “Marvel’s Inhumans” will play upon the Fantastic Four connection. In the

comics, Johnny Storm, the Human Torch, had a romance with the Inhuman named Crystal (Isabelle Cornish). The rights to that superhero team are still held by 20th Century Fox, so it would require an agreement between Fox and Disney to make a crossover happen.

If ABC executives exposed the series to the mutating mists, it might morph into a decent series. As it stands right now, the untapped potential and slow storytelling may send the characters back to the moon.

“Marvel’s Inhumans” debuts on ABC on Friday, Sept. 29.

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work. Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.
