North County’s Largest Outdoor Annual Music Festival The 14th Annual Ferguson StreetFest will be held on September 27-28 in Ferguson’s historic downtown Citywalk district and will feature a diverse line-up of music, food vendors, games, and activities. Ferguson StreetFest is the largest annual outdoor music festival in North County, with the festivities attracting more than 10,000 visitors each year. Attendees at this year’s festival will once again have the chance to enjoy some of the Midwest’s top performers and entertainers while noshing on food items from a variety of local vendors and participating in several different activities, including a washers tournament, home brewing expo, and the always-popular “Manly Man High Heel Keg Relay.” Also, just added this year, the ladies will have a chance to strut their stuff in the “Girly Girl Combat Wench Relay.”

The musical line-up for the 14th Annual Ferguson StreetFest is sure to provide something that everyone can enjoy.

Kung Fu Cavemen, a classic rock band that covers artists from Pink Floyd to The Beatles and Aerosmith, will kick off the festival with a set from 5 - 6:30pm on Friday. Up next will be St. Louis’s freshest dance and party band, Slam Band, who will rock the stage from 7 - 8:30pm that night. Pepperland, a Beatles tribute band that offers their own

unique take on the classics from John, Paul, George, and Ringo, will wrap up the evening with a performance from 9 - 11pm.

On Saturday, Ferguson’s own up-andcoming pop/rock group, Jeske Park, will play a pre-festival set from 11:30am - 12:30pm. These five young musicians, who grew up in Ferguson and formed their band name from the park where they would often meet up and practice, will impress the crowd with their covers of a variety of songs.

The festival will officially open at noon, and the Collegiate Shag Brass Band will get the party started from 1 2:30pm with their energetic and upbeat mix of good music and big brass, which draws from the influences of Queen, James Brown, Grover Washington, Jr., and others. The classic rock quintet of Super Jam, voted Best Cover Band by the Riverfront Times in 2013, will keep the crowd rocking from 3 - 4:30pm with their unique takes on classic hits

by Boston, STYX, Journey, Steve Miller Band, and many more. Up next (from 5 - 6:30pm) will be Trixie Delight, who will entertain all generations with covers of popular bands and songs from the 70s, 80s, 90s, and today. Anthony Gomes, who will be making a stop on his national tour to perform at StreetFest, will take the stage from 7 - 8:30pm

to perform a blues/rock set and show the crowd why he was named the #1 Blues Artist by Billboard Magazine.

Last but not least, Dirty Muggs will round out the 14th Annual StreeFest from 9 - 11pm with a high-energy, choreographed show that will get everyone moving to the dance floor. Dirty Muggs will bring their years of experience to the stage to play everything from funk and hip-hop to pop and soul.

Change in Electric Bill Ameren Missouri customers should see a decrease in the fuel adjustment charge on their electric bill after the Missouri Public Service Commission adopted a lower tariff that takes effect on September 24.

The new tariff will mean a reduction of about $1.97 a month (from $6.07 to $4.10 a month) for the average residential customer who uses 1,100 kWh of electricity a month. In its filing, Ameren Missouri stated the proposed adjustment to customer rates primarily reflected changes in its fuel and purchased power costs net of off-system sales revenues experienced during the four month period of February to May. The fuel adjustment charge was authorized by

the Commission for Ameren Missouri in a regular rate case in 2009. The FAC tariff allows the company to pass increases or decreases in its net fuel and purchase power costs to customers outside of a general rate case.

The FAC allows the company to recover most of its costs, but not all, to encourage conservation and prudence in fuel use by the company. Fuel adjustment charges are intended to help companies deal with volatility in fuel pricing. Any charges resulting from the fuel adjustment clause must appear in a separate category on customers’ bills.

Ameren Missouri provides electric service to approximately 1.2 million customers in Missouri.

September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month Childhood cancer strikes one in every 300 boys and one in every 333 girls before they reach the age of 20. Because of advances in treatments, about 80% of children treated for cancer survive 5 years or more. As the treatments allow these children to live longer, they can also cause health problems that may not show up until months or even years after treatment. These problems are called late-effects.

Two-thirds of these survivors will face one or more late-effects from treatment that is classified as severe or life-threatening. These can in-

clude heart damage, a second cancer or more, lung damage, infertility, growth deficits, hearing loss and most commonly, cognitive impairments such as attention, memory, producing and understanding, reasoning, problem solving and decision making. Childhood cancer is for life. It is imperative that all survivors of childhood cancer receive on-going monitoring and continue with physical and psychosocial care throughout their entire lives.

The causes of childhood cancers are largely unknown, and for the most part they cannot be prevented.

Global Be(er) Responsible Day September 20 marks Global Be(er) Responsible Day. To prepare for this, more than 450 St. Louis Anheuser-Busch employees took part in a larger-than-life event to spell out Budweiser’s Designate a Driver message. Participants stood in single-file lines to become letters and create a living billboard as a helicopter flew overhead to capture the image.

World Breastfeeding Week La Leche League is providing women with a unique opportunity to learn about the importance of breastfeeding with their seminar, Breastfeeding & Parenting: Making It Work! The seminar will be held at the St. Louis Zoo on Saturday, September 28 from 9am - 4pm in the McDonnell Center at River Camp.

Many women encounter problems while breastfeeding and wean their children before they reach optimal breastfeeding goals. To compound matters, parents that use infant formula increase their children’s risk for diseases such as type 2 diabetes, asthma and childhood obesity according to the Agency for Healthcare Quality. Obesity is a major concern in Missouri because 16.2 percent of children are overweight according to CDC, the 19th highest rate of any state. La Leche League will offer information and strategies to help parents overcome these ubiquitous obstacles.

World Breastfeeding Week events in St. Louis will take place from Saturday, September 28 through Saturday, October 5. Following the kick-off seminar, there will be daily events with La Leche League around St. Louis. These include a potluck picnic, hikes, a train ride to the City Garden, a trip to the Webster Groves Farmers’ Market and more.

Space is limited for the seminar. Babies are welcome. Pre-registration is required for attendees age three and over. Early bird registration discounts are in effect until August 31. Free parking will be available in the South Lot of the Zoo before 8:30am.

Volunteers Needed for Habitat Restoration In celebration of National Public Lands Day, the St. Charles County Parks and Recreation Department and Greenway Network are teaming up to restore habitat for wildlife in Broemmelsiek Park , 1615 Schwede Rd., near Wentzville (off Highway DD/Winghaven exit), from 8am – noon on Saturday, September 28. This is an excellent opportunity for scout troops, environmental clubs and students needing community service hours to assist with this extensive park planting project. Volunteers should gather at the Off-Leash Dog Area parking lot when they arrive and bring their own shovels and gloves. Refreshments and snacks will be provided.

From 8 - 9am, families with young children (10 years of age and under) are encouraged to participate in a planting opportunity in a designated area of the park. From 9am - noon, adults, groups, and others will plant native trees and shrubs to create wildlife habitat for a variety of animals and songbirds.

Maryland Heights Business Expo

U.S. Bank has promoted two of its St. Louis area branch managers to district manager positions. Scott Schneider was named district manager of the bank’s Twin Rivers district and Austin Umbenhaur was named district manager of the Northwest district.

In their new roles, Schneider and Umbenhaur will each oversee operations at a number of local branches.

Schneider was named to district manager of the Twin Rivers district for U.S. Bank. Previously a branch manager at U.S. Bank’s Waterford branch, Schneider has been with U.S. Bank in St. Louis since 1991. He currently serves as a member of the board of directors for North County, Inc. and Greater North County Chamber of Commerce. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business and computer science from Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Scott Schneider and a master’s degree in accounting from University of Missouri – St. Louis.

Umbenhaur was named to district manager of the Northwest district for U.S. Bank. He has been with U.S. Bank since 2004, most recently serving as a branch manager in St. Louis, and previously in San Diego, Calif. and Colorado Springs, Colo. Umbenhaur currently serves as a member of the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce and was recently recognized with North County Inc.’s annual Leader Award. He is currently Austin Umbenhaur pursuing a bachelor’s degree at Maryville University in St. Louis.

Schneider and Umbenhaur have both received U.S. Bank’s annual Pinnacle Award, the company’s highest honor recognizes top employee performance.

Maryland Heights Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Business Expo and Job Fair on Wednesday, October 9 from 10am – 2pm at Hollywood Casino & Hotel. This is an opportunity for businesses and job seekers alike to come learn and network with one another. Community Service Award Mayor Thomas P. Schneider was pleased to announce that former Council Representative Margaret Connors was honored at a luncheon hosted by Commerce Bank where she received a Community Service Award. Margaret Connors has volunteered her time to various Florissant organizations and has touched many people’s lives along the way.

She has served on the Florissant Historical Society for 25 years and is currently the vice president where she is still very active in various fundraising events. She was formerly President of the Florissant Fine Arts Council.

Agency Promotes Therapist to Program Supervisor Kids In The Middle (KITM) recently announced the promotion of Michelle Sebek, LCSW, as the agency’s new School Outreach Program (SOC) supervisor. In this position, Sebek will handle program coordination and supervision of all SOC therapists. Prior to this promotion, she served as an agency intake therapist and SOC counselor since 2008.

SOC offers free group and individual counseling for children in St. Louis City public and private schools during the school day. It is funded by the St. Louis Mental Health Board and the United Way of Greater St. Louis. In 2012, the program assisted 879 children experiencing family transitions due to parental separation, family illness or violence.

New Skilled-Nursing Development Opens to Strong Demand Despite the fact that the average occupancy rate for skilled nursing homes in St. Louis County is 77.5 percent (with a slightly lower average of 74.2 percent statewide), the new $16 million Anna House located within The Sarah Community in Bridgeton opened to 100 percent capacity. Now, nine months later, a waiting list of more than a dozen older adults remains. This success speaks to the demand for the facility and the unique care concept it has introduced to the St. Louis region.

During his time with Riverview Gardens High School, David has helped to develop the OPTIONS program, which is an alternative education program that includes credit retrieval, therapeutic sessions, and smaller class sizes to facilitate differentiated learning styles. David is a member of numerous committees on the Riverview Gardens High School campus, including the school improvement team, attendance and discipline committee, supervising administrator for the social studies and English departments, instructional leader for the freshman academy, and facilitator of the mission and vision of the Riverview Gardens School District. David was the recipient of Riverview Gardens High School Teacher of the Year Award in 2012. David is also a member of several educational organizations, including the National Alternative Education Association, National Association of Secondary School Principals, Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals, Association of Curriculum and Development, and Phi Delta Kappa. Cindy Bauer As a clinical director of two inpatient nursing units at SSM DePaul Health Center, Cindy Bauer’s job is to ensure that every patient receives exceptional care. She is responsible for patient, employee and physician satisfaction. Cindy works closely with the leadership team to ensure that the financial goals of their units are achieved. As a leader at SSM DePaul, Cindy has worked with colleagues to design and open a successful 20-bed Interventional Stroke Neurology/Neurosurgery unit. This unit opened in 2009, and Cindy works closely with the stroke coordinator as well as the interventional stroke neurologists to ensure that all stroke patients receive the very best care possible. In November 2011, SSM DePaul Health Center received Joint Commission Certification as a Primary Stroke Center of Excellence. In 2012, SSM DePaul provided care to over 600 patients diagnosed with a stroke; because of the exceptional care provided, many of those patients are back in their homes today. Cindy is an active volunteer member of the River City Rascals Baseball Organization. SSM DePaul Health Center is a member of North County Inc.

Christina Bennett was born and raised in North County; she graduated from Rosary High School. She earned an associate’s degree in teaching from St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley. Christina is manager of Hendel’s Restaurant in Old Town. She attends and is an active member of Sacred Heart Parish. In addition to her professional accomplishments, Christina is also a member of the Greater North County Chamber of Commerce, a board member for Florissant Old Town Partners, and chair of the Old Town Florissant Pond Tour.

She is an advisory board member for Enjoy- a-Local Restaurant Association. Christina is also an advisory board member for the culinary arts program at North County Tech High School.

Last year, Christina helped North County Incorporated organize and launch a new fundraiser to celebrate its 35th anniversary. It proved to be such a huge success that NCI is now holding the event annually with Christina’s continued expertise and the restaurant’s continued contributions. Tiffany Besse is currently the associate principal of Pattonville High School in the Pattonville School District and has been with the district since July 2008. She previously served as an assistant principal at Eureka High School. Tiffany’s impact on Pattonville has included developing a Career Education Initiative that allows students to engage in career exploration and college planning with a mentor, serving as a member of the team to facilitate a grant giving students the opportunity to pursue career exploration in high-demand career fields, working with parents to better the curriculum, and implementing school-wide Positive Behavior Support programs. Tiffany is currently pursuing her doctorate at Lindenwood University. She belongs to several professional organizations including Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, National Association of Secondary School Principals, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and National Council for Supervisors of Mathematics. Tiffany and her husband, Tim, are very involved in their parish as a mentor couple, Eucharistic ministers, and lectors. They serve on the parish’s strategic planning committee. In addition, Tiffany spends time volunteering in the community at various events, such as food drives, 5K runs, and mentoring and coaching children, including her volunteer work at Mathews-Dickey Boys’ & Girls’ Club. Pattonville School District is a member of North County Inc. Heather Bowker is the manager of Patient Access at Christian Hospital. During her time at Christian Hospital, Heather has worked at implementing process improvements to reduce waste and increase productivity and interdepartmental teamwork with the goal to make Christian Hospital a place where physicians want to practice and patients want to come.

Her biggest strength is the compassion she shows toward patients and employees. Heather serves on the Christian Hospital Cultural Council. She is also a member of the National Association of Healthcare Access Management, an organization that promotes best practices, standards and subject matter expertise. As a volunteer, Heather leads a women’s group for her church and is the assistant coach of her daughter’s softball team. Christian Hospital is a member of North County Incorporated.

Congratulations to the 30 Leaders in their Thirties Katy Chambers, Ed.D is the principal of Hazelwood Northwest Middle School. Dr. Chambers has more than ten years of educational experience. She began her career in the education field as a school and community resource volunteer in the United States Peace Corps. She spent two years in Cassel Village, South Africa, where she supported the development of staff for three schools by conducting workshops, team teaching, providing feedback, coaching, and evaluating teacher performance. She also designed a female empowerment program focused on self-esteem, peer pressure, gender issues, HIV/AIDS and future orientation. She was previously a middle school assistant principal at Hazelwood East and Hazelwood Southeast Middle Schools. As a leader at HSD, she has collaborated with other leadership teams to implement “turnaround” and “transformational” reform processes to oversee day-to-day operations at two of the middle schools. She has also spearheaded several programs designed to help student performance benchmarks. She previously taught middle school social studies in the Ferguson-Florissant School District, serving as department chairperson and leading numerous district and school committees. Dr. Chambers has a doctorate in educational administration from Lindenwood University. Hazelwood School District is a member of North County Inc. Jessica Chandler is assistant director of athletics-compliance/senior women’s administrator at University of Missouri- St. Louis. In this role, it is Jessica’s responsibility to ensure the department is following all NCAA regulations, to oversee student-athlete eligibility and progress towards degree, and to serve as the liaison for her department to other student service offices (financial aid, registrar, admissions, etc.). Jessica is also a graduate of the University of Missouri System’s Administrative Leadership Development Program. Jessica admits she is proud to see the number of student athletes graduate each year. The athletic department currently has a graduation rate near 80 percent. She belongs to several professional organizations at the national level, and many are located within St. Louis City. She has worked on a Habitat for Humanity build with the student athlete advisory committee. At the Habitat build, Jessica’s team spent the day laying down sod and giving the new homes backyards. Also, each year Jessica’s department puts on a carnival for a local youth initiative in the community. This night consists of student athletes organizing a night of food, fun, and games for the children at the event. The most recent group the student athletes partnered with was the Pagedale Family Support Center. The University of Missouri-St. Louis is a member of North County Inc. Brian Douglas is the director of business development with ONEWAY Construction where he handles community relations and marketing for the company. Brian uses his role with the company as an opportunity to educate the community on the importance of using a local contractor as well as the importance of using a company that is properly insured. In 2009, Brian was the recipient of the Maryland Heights Chamber of Commerce’s Distinguished Achievement Award. Brian is a member of the Northwest Chamber of Commerce and is a board member with the Maryland Heights Chamber of Commerce. He also served as the Maryland Heights Chamber’s chairman for 2011 and 2012. In addition to his professional achievements and responsibilities, Brian also has also served as a high school youth group leader at St. Norbert Parish in Florissant. The Maryland Heights Chamber is a member of North County Incorporated.

Brandy Dudenhoeffer is a real estate agent with Prudential Select Properties in Hazelwood. Brandy has been a real estate agent for over 10 years. She has been the recipient of the Five Star Agent Award—Best in Client Satisfaction—since 2005. Brandy volunteers with Youth in Need, Nurses for Newborns, and Calvary Church Vacation Bible School. She also volunteers for Habitat for Humanity and is currently in the process of putting together a “women build” team. Brandy is a member of the Northwest Chamber of Commerce and a number of professional associations. Brandy also is a registered nurse and received her BSN from the University of Missouri, St. Louis. The Northwest Chamber of Commerce is a member of North County Inc. Tina Garrison started her healthcare career with SSM in 2001. She has worked in a variety of leadership roles for the past 12 years. Much of her career has been focused on improving clinical outcomes and regulatory compliance, often including scope of multiple hospitals. In 2012, Tina was named the vice president of operations at SSM DePaul Health Center. In this role, Tina is responsible for improving operations and efficiency at the hospital. Tina is also an executive champion for Hospital’s Preservation of Earth Committee. This team is excelling at reducing the volume of items going into landfills.

Her volunteer contributions include the 2013 executive champion for combined United Way and employee campaign for SSM St. Louis Network, which includes six hospitals.

Tina is also a member of the Northwest Chamber of Commerce. SSM DePaul Health Center is a member of North County Inc. Andrea Hayes is an English Language Arts teacher with Hazelwood School District, where she teaches seventh grade at Southeast Middle School. Andrea recently partnered with Anthony Kiekow of Fox 2 News to create an online “anti-bullying” assignment for students.

She helps raise funds for student scholarships, leads workshops on anti-bullying and selfesteem, and has helped lead the effort of donating coats to families in need. She also participates in Race for the Cure and is a part of the Shalom Church Education Ministry. Plus, she helps her community by volunteering with voter education and blood drives to heighten sickle cell awareness. Andrea is a sponsor for Emerging Young Leaders, which is a global initiative, designed for girls in grades six through eight. She has been able to mentor 15 to 20 girls through her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha-Gamma Omega Chapter. Lindenwood University’s Presidential Annual Report featured her as a graduate excelling both academically and in the community in 2010.

Carla Hayes is the membership operations manager for FOCUS St. Louis. She is responsible for delivering high-quality service to its members by driving all campaigns to acquire, retain, and upgrade members. She plans and coordinates the Breakfast Connections and City Success series, which educates members on events, issues, and policy changes that are occurring in the St. Louis region. Prior to joining FOCUS, Carla served as membership coordinator for the St. Louis Convention and Visitors Commission. During her tenure there, she received the Inaugural “You Rock” award in 2010 and was recognized as a “Hospitality Hero” in 2009. She also served as executive grant assistant/office manager for St. Louis Healthy Families, which was a 2011 What’s Right with the Region! honoree, facilitating healthy relationship and violence prevention workshops for youth, couples, singles, and businesses. Carla holds a master’s degree in digital and multimedia studies from Lindenwood University. She is a member of the Urban League Young Professionals of Metropolitan St. Louis and is an active volunteer for both the St. Louis Convention and Visitors Commission and the Fabulous Fox Theatre. Corrie Hendrix, a native of Florissant, is the marketing coordinator for St. Louis Economic Development Partnership. Corrie has served as social committee chair for the St. Louis chapter of Public Relations Society of America. She is a member of the Urban Land Institute and Young Professionals of St. Louis County Government. As a team, the marketing department at St. Louis Economic Development Partnership has won awards for the design and execution of marketing campaigns, collateral, and special events planning. The organization also is responsible for many other award-winning North County projects such as Accelerate St. Louis Entrepreneurship Initiative, Midwest China Hub Project, National Archives and Records Administration and Express Scripts’ North Park Expansion. Rainie Howard After graduating from McCluer High School and obtaining her bachelor’s of arts degree from Chicago State University, Rainie moved back to St. Louis and discovered her passion for business. This led to her getting a master’s degree in business management and leadership. She worked as a business manager for a healthcare company for several years and was promoted to an executive director position. After several years in leadership, Rainie decided to follow her dream of becoming an entrepreneur. Today, she lives in the City of Florissant and is the owner and CEO of I Heart Arts LLC, an arts enrichment institute, and Create Innovate, Inc., an innovation and leadership consulting firm. She is the founder and CEO of Sisters of Hope, Inc., a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization providing empowerment programs for women and girls. Rainie has authored books (such as Start a Business Mentoring Girls and I Am Special, I Am Unique, I Have a Purpose), articles, videos and training programs. She is respected as a leading authority and pioneer in the field of women empowerment, entrepreneurship, and innovation. Through her life-changing work with leaders, she passionately inspires creativity and personal development. Rainie is currently a member of Toastmasters International, the National Speaker’s Association of St. Louis and is a community leader of Grace Church.

Joe Jovanovich is the 24:1 project manager at Beyond Housing, where he aligns resources, partners and programs that support successful children in the Normandy School District.

Joe has helped to lead the community engagement process that created the 24:1 Community Plan. The plan has united the 24 municipalities in the Normandy School District under one shared vision for community transformation. In his role as project manager, Joe has developed and implemented an early childhood development initiative that improves the quality of local child care operators and improves small business capacity. Joe has also coordinated investments that have expanded mentorship, teen leadership, parent engagement and college access opportunities for hundreds of Normandy students and families. He is facilitating a process by which the District’s staff work with external mental health providers to create on a system to support students’ emotional and mental health, in addition to academic success. Joe is a recipient of the National Award for Excellence in Community Building and Organizing from Neighbor Works America. He also volunteers as a Big Brother in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Missouri program for a Normandy student. Normandy School District is a member of North County Inc. Brian Livingston, a life-long resident of North County, is the owner and president of New Century Armored Logistics, a company located in the City of Hazelwood that replenishes and services ATM’s in the Midwest. Since he began in 2008, Brian has grown his business from the nine workers he started with to his current staff of 25. Brian volunteers in his community: He is the head coach for the Hazelwood lacrosse team, and he helped with the funding and start of the North County youth lacrosse team. Another way Brian gives back to the community is through donations from his business. New Century donates yearly, with past donations going to Our Lady of Guadalupe, Ronald McDonald Children’s Hospital, Cool Down St. Louis, the Veterans Affairs Fisher House and St. Patrick Center.

Chris Masterson teaches social studies for grades six through eight at Sacred Heart Catholic School. Chris is the coordinator of professional learning teams for the North County Federation of Catholic Schools. Since 2008, Chris has lived in North County, and since 2009, he has taught United States history and world history and geography for Sacred Heart Catholic School. In 2013, Chris received a master’s degree for Leadership in Catholic Education from Saint Louis University. In his more than four years with Sacred Heart, he has served on a number of faculty committees including the principal’s advisory committee and school climate committee, and he was chair of the annual faculty-sponsored Sacred Heart Walk-A-Thon.

During the 2010-2011 school year, Chris completed the Archdiocese of St. Louis Potential Leader program for future school leaders. Between 2011 and 2013, Chris served as a team leader for the Federation of Catholic Schools Professional Learning Teams. In 2012, he began serving as a member of the academic excellence committee for the Archdiocese of St. Louis Mission Advancement Initiative for Catholic Education. Congratulations to the 30 Leaders in their Thirties Regina Oliver, a North County resident, is an APRN clinical instructor in LTC at Missouri Quality Initiative at Delmar Gardens North. Regina is currently pursuing her doctoral degree at University of Missouri-St. Louis. While in the program, she will be piloting a project geared toward adolescent minorities by providing general health and sexually transmitted disease education and awareness programs in the community to address the rise in STD rates within this population. This program will be placed in several sites in North St. Louis County. In addition to her contributions in her field, Regina is also involved in several community and professional organizations. She is a board member for Well of Life Youth Organization, a member of Sigma Theta Tau Honors Nursing Society, American Nurses Association, Missouri Nurse Association and St. Louis Nurses in Advanced Practice. Regina was a health ministry volunteer at Believers Temple Word Fellowship Church and helps conduct cardiovascular screenings and breast health education at many venues throughout the community. Delmar Gardens North is a member of North County Inc. Jaime Otto is the principal at Holman Elementary School with the Ferguson-Florissant School District. Jaime was chosen as District Teacher of the Year in 2008. Also in 2008, Jaime was awarded the Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award. As principal, Jaime has facilitated the highest attendance growth in the Ferguson-Florissant School District during the 2012-2013 school year. Jaime also facilitated the highest STAR and MAP math achievement for the sixth-grade students in the district for the 2012-2013 school year.

Jaime served as a volunteer for the Maggie Welby Golf Tournament held at Eagle Springs Golf Course. She also volunteers with Hello Tomorrow Cancer Fundraising and Girls on the Run, a non-profit prevention program that encourages preteen girls to develop selfrespect and healthy lifestyles through running. The Ferguson-Florissant School District is a member of North County Inc. Dhari Pearson is the co-owner and manager of Papa Murphy’s Pizza in the City of Florissant. Dhari has worked as a volunteer with several charities and organizations in the North County area. She has worked with the Kiwanis Club of Florissant as well as The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of North County. She is currently serving as the second vice-president for the Florissant Valley Kiwanis Club, where she helped start a monthly food booth at the Ferguson Farmers Market. Dhari is on the board of directors and is an ambassador with the Greater North County Chamber of Commerce and is also a member of the Northwest Chamber of Commerce. Dhari was selected as the Greater North County Chamber of Commerce Ambassador of the Year in 2013. Her business was the recipient of the Papa Murphy’s Corporate Golden Slice Award. As part of her commitment to the community, she generously donates to area schools, churches and charitable organizations, as well as sponsors fundraisers for Accessible Play and many Scout troops. She participates in the Florissant Old Town Fall Festival, A Taste of North County, and the Hazelwood Harvestfest. She is also a member of the Greater St. Louis Chapter of Soroptimist International. The Greater North County Chamber is a member of North County Inc. Kenneth Roumpos Kenneth Roumpos is the principal at Ritenour Middle School. Kenneth was awarded the 2013 Positive Behavior Intervention and Support Silver Award from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for promoting academic and behavioral support of students at Ritenour Middle School. His leadership is based in the foundation of leading through listening, empathy, community building and commitment to the growth of those he serves. Kenneth also implemented the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, which together with the PBIS program, has made an impact on improving school culture at Ritenour Middle. Kenneth is a board member of the Bernie Project, a non-profit organization that provides resources and support to the Wakiso School of Hope in Wakiso, Uganda. Prior to becoming principal, Kenneth worked as an administrator in the Ritenour School District. Ritenour School District is a member of North County Inc. Scott Schaefer worked in graphic design and sales until he began his career with Schaefer Autobody. He eventually became the vice president of Schaefer Autobody Centers.

Schaefer Autobody was awarded a BBB Torch Award in 2010. In 2011, Scott opened the company’s seventh location in the City of Hazelwood, adding 11 new jobs to the community. Under Scott’s direction, Schaefer Autobody provides several free classes to area professionals each year. These classes include First Responder Training for emergency professionals, as well as continuing education classes geared toward insurance professionals. Scott and his employees help organize several events supporting the community, including assisting with the Valley Industries Mayor’s Shamrock Ball and the annual Valley of Flowers Parade. He is a member of the Greater North County Chamber and the Northwest Chamber of Commerce. The Greater North County Chamber of Commerce and the Northwest Chamber of Commerce are members of North County Inc. Brian Scheller, a Florissant resident, is the chairman of the fine arts department at Lutheran North and lead director of bands/assistant director of choirs at Lutheran High School North. In addition to teaching middle and high school band and choir at Lutheran High School North, Brian served as director of music at Grace Lutheran Chapel in Bellefontaine Neighbors for two years. He also served as the vice president of Grace Lutheran Chapel. Brian is involved with the Missouri Music Educators Association, the St. Louis Metro 8 Music Educators Association and the Technology Institute for Music Education. Brian was the recipient of the Outstanding Educator Award from the North County Churches Uniting for Racial Harmony and Justice. Brian holds a master’s degree from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Lutheran High School North is a member of North County Inc.

Christina Shoaf lives in North County, attended Incarnate Word Academy, and now is an RN with the Heart Care Group, a division of Barnes Jewish Community Hospitals. Christina has been with BJC since 1993. Christina is currently the practice manager. During her time with BJC, she has worked as a clinical supervisor, medical secretary, a patient care associate and an office RN. Christina earned her RN with a bachelor’s of science in nursing from Goldfarb School of Nursing.

She is currently enrolled in the graduate program at Goldfarb School of Nursing for a master’s in nursing, nurse educator. In addition to her degrees and work experience, Christina is involved in several professional memberships, such as Medical Group Management Association, American College of Cardiology Associate, and Sigma Theta Tau. She participated in the Heart Walk as a team captain every year and organized and partnered with the physicians for a “Walk with Doctors,” which was held at Christian Hospital. Christian Hospital is a member of North County Inc. Jana Shortt is the director of communications and marketing for the Ferguson-Florissant School District. In this role, Jana actively promotes the school district as well as North County through positive press coverage and reputation management. Jana was born and raised in Florissant and attended Ferguson-Florissant schools. After high school, Jana attended Stephens College and graduated with honors from Saint Louis University with a degree in communication. She then went to work in public relations in St. Louis at Adamson Advertising.

After serving local, regional, and national clients at Adamson for six years, Jana went on to head public relations for Hardee’s Food Systems, Inc. She has served as a public relations coordinator volunteer with the Florissant Valley chapter of La Leche League. She also served several local clients’ media relations needs through her own business, Jana Shortt Communications. Jana works with NCI each year, assisting them with the design and printing needs for their Annual Breakfast. Jana is a member of the Missouri School Public Relations Association as well as a member of the Greater North County Chamber of Commerce Partners in Education. Jana was the recipient of the International Association of Business Communicators Quill Award. Ferguson-Florissant School District is a Member of North County Inc. Austin Umbenhaur is a district manager with US Bank, and in his position he manages 11 US Bank locations. Austin started as a teller with the company in 2004 and has worked his way up. For the past seven years, he has received 18 Quarterly Pinnacle Awards from US Bank. For the past two years, he has been awarded an Annual Pinnacle Award, which is reserved for only the top 10 percent of employees within US Bank. In 2011, he was a branch of the year finalist, and he won an award for Leading with the Heart. In addition to his honors and accomplishments, Austin gives back to the community through volunteering with several organizations such as Caring Solutions, an organization that collects household items and delivers them to families in need in the North County area. He has also worked with Habitat for Humanity to build homes for those in need. Austin is a member of North County Inc. and both the Greater North County Chamber of Commerce and the Northwest Chamber of Commerce. US Bank is a member of North County Inc. Annie Wagganer is a sociology instructor at St. Louis Community College, Florissant Valley Campus. In addition to teaching, Annie also mentors students, is a co-advisor for the Social Justice Club, and serves the campus community through a variety of committees including the Service Learning Council and the Institutional Affairs Committee. In the spring of 2013, Annie led a faculty and staff effort in designing and implementing an original campus event, Student Outreach and Registration (SOAR), to recruit and retain more North County students. SOAR is now a planned event for each semester at Florissant Valley. Annie also revived the Race and Ethnicity sociology course on campus, building related campus conversations into the curriculum, and spoke on this pedagogy at the League for Innovation in Community Colleges, Learning Summit 2012. She presented at the 2013 Race Symposium at the Missouri History Museum on the legacy of the Eugenics Movement. Annie is a member of the American Sociological Association, the Missouri Community College Association, and the National Civil Rights Museum.

She is a volunteer committee member with the Covering House, a local St. Louis organization providing care to young women and girls rescued from trafficking and sexual exploitation. Annie also volunteered at the recent Taste of Ferguson Bethany House fundraising events. Some of her other accomplishments include co-authoring the chapter “HIV/AIDS and Mental Disorders” in the book Women’s Mental Health Services (2010). St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley is a member of NCI. Melissa Watson is currently the accounting specialist in the Finance Department for the City of Hazelwood. Melissa was born and raised in Hazelwood. She earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of Missouri, St. Louis. She was hired by the City of Hazelwood in 2003 as an accounting administrative assistant. Since then she has earned Employee of the Month three times and Employee of the Year for City Hall two times (2006 and 2009). Also, in 2009, she was named City Wide Employee of the Year. In 2003, shortly after she was hired, Melissa worked with the finance director, implementing new accounting software for the entire city. She was called upon to teach classes to other users. Melissa’s knowledge of the area and Hazelwood’s tax codes enhances her ability to communicate with the residents of the city. The City of Hazelwood is a member of North County Inc. Stan Williams, Jr. is the divisional vice president at AXA Equitable, where he recruits and hires new financial advisors. He also provides retirement and full-service financial planning to individuals and businesses in this role. He is a graduate of Hazelwood East High School and is currently a doctoral student at Kansas State University. He has served on the boards of Midtown Center of Catholic Charities, Imani Rites of Passage and Company, and Youth and Family Institute for Change of St. Louis. He volunteers with the Urban Leagues Black Executive Exchange Program, Urban League Young Professionals, Regional Business Council’s Young Professionals Network, the Herbert Hoover Boys and Girls Club, and the United Way of St. Louis’ Charmaine Chapman and Young Leaders Societies. Stan is also a member of the Crisis Nursery executive board which has a very active location on the Christian Hospital campus. Stan is very active in his community: He coaches football with the Hazelwood North Middle team and the Mathew’s Dickey’s Boy’s Club. Stan has been honored with several awards, including the 2011 St. Louis Americans Top 20 Under 40 Leaders and was honored as the Regional Business Council’s Leadership 100 for its young professional’s network in 2011, 2012 and 2013. Gary Baute Rascal’s Catcher Voted ‘Rookie Of The Year’ And Heading To Da Cubs River City’s catcher Danny Canela has inked a minor league contract by the Chicago Cubs organization. He will be in Arizona for spring training with a Cubs’ minor league affiliate and attempt to make an opening day roster next spring.

Before coming to the Rascals in 2013, Canela spent the bulk of his college career with the North Carolina State Wolfpack of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). In three seasons with the Wolfpack, he blasted 17 home runs. Just before his senior campaign, he transferred from NC State to Lee University in Tennessee. Canela played in 61 games for the Flames and averaged .335 at the plate including seven homeruns. A native of Pembrook Pines, FL, Canela put up outstanding numbers for the Rascals including 12 home runs, 53 RBI’s, and a .360 batting average in 69 games.

The Chill of the Central Hockey League (CHL) has signed former ECHL Most Valuable Player CHAD COSTELLO for the Chill’s upcoming inaugural season. The Chill is now up to six players signed for the 2013-14 season.

Costello, 27, enters his sixth pro season and he returns to the CHL after playing the previous two seasons in the ECHL and American Hockey League (AHL). The native of Johnston, Iowa was named the ECHL’s MVP following the 2011-12 season despite missing over a third of the season due to a major knee injury. “We are extremely proud to be announcing Chad Costello as a member of the Chill,” said Chill Head Coach and General Manager Jamie Rivers. “We have talked about building a solid culture and Chad fits right in with the current players we have, as well as future players that will wear our frozen C. Honorable Behavior Is Taught at Home After reading of a road rage incident that ended with a murder conviction of a young man that shot and killed the driver of another vehicle, I thought of another incident from many years ago. It was witnessed by a relative visiting Italy. She stood on a street corner and witnessed two vehicles that bumped into each other while turning left. No real harm was done but tempers flared between the two drivers who proceeded to wave their arms and yell at each other for several minutes while a policeman watched. Just as rapidly as it started, it stopped. Both parties threw up their arms, got back in their cars and drove away, obviously feeling better after venting their ire.

I love the Italians in the respect that they are quick to anger, yet they are just as quick to calm down and go on about their business. This couldn’t be better demonstrated in the movie, Moon Struck where an Italian-American family solved their differences in spite of real animosity and remained a loving family.

Whatever happened to this type of anger management? People are now even shooting each other because of incidents that have no more relevance than accidently bump-

When I was a young man, we sometimes settled arguments and flaring tempers by fisticuffs. It never really proved anything, but our wounded pride was sometimes offset by our wounded nose. In any event, it was one-on-one, and there was a sense of fairness in spite of flaring tempers. We felt that ganging up on one person was cowardly, just as is using guns, knives, clubs, brass knuckles and any other weapons in a confrontation.

We usually learned these things mostly from our fathers and mothers, many of which believed in honor among humankind. I’m afraid that isn’t happening these days with gang violence that ranges from depressed neighborhoods over to modern suburban neighborhoods that also have street gangs although many people can’t or won’t believe it.

We also have female street gangs who may be even more dishonorable and dangerous.

I’m of the opinion that since parents aren’t as available to their offspring as they once were, we should lower the age of juvenile protections from adult punishment from 18 to 16. Much of the criminal element that ends up in courtrooms and prisons began during the early teens or before. By the time they faced adult punishments, many youngsters had already attained a police record, sometimes quite long. In other words, their parents didn’t teach them how to act for assorted reasons.

One of my acquaintances believes parents should suffer the same punishments as their offspring. I’m not so sure this will solve anything, but you can see the thinking and anger of citizens being victimized by these young criminals. I sometimes wonder when this whole thing will explode into vigilante actions which never really solve anything and in fact, usually harm the wrong people.

An 18-year-old or older gang member usually gives his stolen gun to a juvenile member to hold for him or even use to commit murder because the punishment is much less. They’ll still do it if the age is lowered to 16, but the increase of murderers in street gangs being sent to prison will surely help everyone.

Most fathers and mothers of my youth taught their children honor.

No one else can teach it as well. They considered it their job. It still is, but the fact remains, many aren’t doing it. We need to change the rules.
