By Charlotte Beard On Oct. 10, some of the City Museum’s residents are taking their circus acts to living rooms and everywhere that people have been taking more advantage of live streaming this year. Circus Harmony’s The Balancing Act: Walking the Pandemic Tightrope will be viewable free online starting at 7 p.m. for those who acquire tickets at https://circusharmony.org/. The show and fundraiser will include 20 students from St. Louis, Jefferson County, Ferguson, Ladue, and East St. Louis, as well as two alumni who are currently attending the National Circus School of Montreal. Choreography will be by Circus Harmony’s Rosa Yagaantsetseg, Mongolian master teacher, along with guest choreography from Sereno Aguillar Izzo (internationally acclaimed juggler). According to the circus’ founder, Jessica Hentoff, alumni of the circus have gone on to work with Cirque du Soleil, Les 7 Doigts de la Main, Ringling Brothers, Midnight Circus, The Flying Wallendas and Circa Contemporary Circus of Australia. One former student has gone on to use his acrobatics with WWE NXT. In addition to the October show featuring their talents, students and alumni will share their views on the pandemic, social justice, and the presidential election. “The show itself was created and filmed over the summer in people’s living rooms, bedrooms, backyards, and parks,” stated Hentoff who is also the circus’ Artistic/Executive Director. “The Balancing Act show is an edited video that will be broadcast along with some before and after live interaction on the night of the show. Some of the acts are solos, some have as many as nine people in zoom boxes on the screen at once – ‘Brady Bunch’ style. Some of the alumni videos have

been sent from as far away as Australia, and include alumni who work with The Flying Wallendas, Cirque du Soleil, and WWE!” Hentoff states that the viewers can expect to hear of humans who overcome challenges. She reiterates the show’s theme – this is a show unlike any we have ever done before for a time unlike any we have ever been in before. Hentoff further states the show is an “interesting and inspirational show presented by young people who will be most impacted by the worlds’ current events.” “Our entire world has never been more

challenged than it is now,” stated Hentoff. “When this global pandemic hit St. Louis, Circus Harmony had to close (its) school and all our outreach locations closed as well. At the same time, alumni who were touring the world with different circuses and attending different circus colleges were sent home. As a nonprofit social circus school, we feel like we are walking a tightrope. Under normal circumstances, we know how to walk a tightrope; however, the length keeps getting See ‘CIRCUS’ page 2
