Ferguson to become part of international peace initiate with the planting of a Peace Pole at the corner of Church Street and South Florissant By Charlotte Beard The corner of Church Street and South Florissant in Ferguson may soon become home to one of more than 200,000 Peace Poles standing outdoors around the globe. The pole is an internationally-recognized symbol of humanity’s hopes and dreams, and representation of a silent prayer for peace on earth. “It is with great pleasure that I can announce the Honorable Mayor Jones has approved the global initiative, and planting of the Peace Pole to take place in her city of Ferguson, Missouri,” stated Dr. Marty K. Casey, Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations. “The resolution will be added on their next council meeting.” Each Peace Pole has written on it “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in different languages on each of its four or six sides. The Peace Pole, originally gifted to Casey by
Fumi Johns Stewart, Executive Director for May Peace Prevail On Earth International during her Black SON Day ceremony, has only four sides with four languages. Casey stated that the English side represents her first language, the German side represents the first place she performed overseas in 1998, the Swahili side represents the African language she loves, and the Japanese side represents the history of the Peace Poles. The establishment of Peace Poles in Japan were in response to the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It is stated that in the last seven decades, Peace Poles have been planted in over 200,000 communities worldwide on every continent as an international monument to peace. According to Casey, CEO of UnGUN Institute, she desires to install the Peace Pole
in Ferguson, her hometown, because her “peace work” as a Global Ambassador began in Ferguson following Michael Brown’s death. The announcement that Ferguson would become part of the global initiative was made during the live online global broadcast of the Caravan of Unity during its stop in St. Louis on Sept. 10, which Casey hosted. The United States’ Caravan of Unity began in San Francisco, California on Aug. 28 and was scheduled to conclude at the National Mall in Washington, DC on Sept. 28. The St. Louis presentation took place on North Florissant across from the UMB Bank in Ferguson off Church Street near the waterfall. “After the whole world watched the unrest unfold in our city, we understand that See ‘PEACE’ page 2
