By Sara Hardin Developments on a half-mile segment of Pasadena Avenue in North St. Louis County began in July as part of a revitalization project through the community development organization Beyond Housing. The $5.6 million venture aims to transform the stretch of road into one more visually appealing and better-suited to the needs of the surrounding community. The Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD) has contributed $3.1 million to the plan through its MSD Project Clear initiative, which aims to help manage stormwater and prevent backups in areas through the use of greenspace and bioretention basins. The other $2.5 million has been committed by the 24:1 Community Land Trust. The project is expected to be completed by summer of 2018, and will result in a safer and more beautiful space for Pine Lawn and Northwoods residents. “[The project] changes the entire look and feel and perception of this part of the community,” said Chris Krehmeyer, Beyond Housing CEO. “The aesthetic changes are going to be absolutely dramatic. A lot of vacant and abandoned buildings that have been demoed and turned into a community park. We have a long stretch of road that looked

nondescript, but now will have center medians, trees planted and a roundabout. This is part of a comprehensive, multi-faceted community-building initiative that will have a lot of different moving parts.” Students walking to and from Barack Obama Elementary School have been having to navigate the streets because of the area’s lack of sidewalks. By the project’s end, students and other pedestrians will have brand new sidewalks and a much safer walk-

ing route. “This project will really improve this community’s quality of life,” said Lance LeComb, Manager of Public Information and Spokesperson of MSD. MSD’s focus on rainscaping, the use of greenspace and permeable surfaces to control stormwater, will help to ensure that the area’s combined sewer system experiences fewer overflows and basement backups.
