Celebrated senior has spent her life healing others physically and spiritually

By Sara Hardin St. Andrew’s Resources for Seniors is celebrating its 15th annual Ageless-Remarkable St. Louisans Gala on Oct. 28 at the Hyatt Regency St. Louis at The Arch. The event honors those over the age of 75 who dedicate their time and energy to bettering their communities, advocating or volunteering for charitable causes, or otherwise acting as a positive influence on the lives of those around them.

Among this year’s celebrated individuals is Sister Judy Bell, who currently serves as part of the leadership congregation team with the Franciscan Sisters of Mary, as well as Board President of The Sarah Community nursing home in Bridgeton. Bell, who worked for more than 50 years as a registered nurse and nurse practitioner, came to St. Louis in 1958 from her hometown in southern Indiana to join the nursing program at St. Louis University. Bell has offered her healing instincts to countless individuals in need over the length of her career, and considers the gift to so positively affect others to be a privilege in itself.

“The rewarding work is being present to people who really have a need,” said Bell.

“Sometimes you can empower them to do things for themselves. Other times you have to make a referral that they get the appropriate care. There are other times when I

am the conduit for them just to be able to express concerns about healthcare or family issues. Part of it just understanding where the person is coming from, the issues that are impacting their lives, being that listening ear at times, and also just that sense of presence. Sometimes that leads to prayers, other times it’s just a matter of the gentle touch of holding hands. Other times it’s just affirming them as to the person they are, and encouraging them to be accepting of God’s presence in their lives.”

As part of the nurse practitioner certificate program at Arizona State University between 1995 and 1996, Bell completed her 13-month clinical rotation on the Pima Indian Reservation, offering her skills to those living on the reservation’s grounds.

Her work has also taken her to Appalachia, where she was able to make a difference in the area’s healthcare opportunities available to women.

“When I was a nurse practitioner in Appalachia, Kentucky, the physician that I worked with asked me to take over the women’s health care program,” said Bell. “Within a year’s time we were able to increase the percentage of women coming into that program by almost 67 percent. That’s one of my areas of great satisfaction, is being able to make a

difference not only by my presence, but by what I was able to bring to them that would better their lives and their lifestyle.”

Bell was nominated to be honored as an Ageless-Remarkable St. Louisan by her friend Diane Meatheany, who got to know Bell over the course of working with her for 20 years. Meatheany, who worked with St. Andrew’s for 23 years, worked closely with Bell during the development of The Sarah Community. Her observation of Bell’s commitment to the residents of The Sarah Community and the holistic care she provided them with led to a nomination that Meatheany considered to be a no-brainer.

“She’s just phenomenal,” said Meatheany.

“She’s very selfless, she loves what she does.

Everything she does she gives with her whole heart and her mind. She has a wonderful background of being great in leadership and also being a great clinician. She has a compassion for not only the residents, but also the staff that she works with. She really brings a healing presence to everyone that she works with. So, it was an easy choice. I made one nomination and I wrote from my heart about her. She just embodies everything that I know that we look for when we think of a nominee.”

COMMUNITY VOICES Early detection for prostate and breast cancers truly is your best medicine

By Rick L. Stevens Every fall my wife, Malette, and I are reminded of the importance of getting screened for prostate and breast cancers. And with those reminders come reflections of those we know, some very dear to us, who have been affected by these cancers. The underlying message that always comes through loud and clear is the importance of early detection.

The American Cancer Society recommends that men have an annual prostate screening at age 50 if at average risk; at age 45 if at high-risk, which includes African-American men and men who have a firstdegree relative (father, brother or son) diagnosed with prostate cancer at an early age (younger than age 65); and age 40 if at an even higher risk with more than one first-degree relative diagnosed with prostate cancer at an early age. Screenings should continue annually on men in good health who are expected to live at least 10 more years.

can continue with yearly exams or switch to every other year. Screenings should continue as long as a woman is in good health and is expected to live 10 more years or longer. Women who are at high risk for breast cancer (personal history or strong family history of breast cancer, a genetic mutation known to increase risk, have had chest radiation therapy between the ages of 10-30, or have first-degree relatives with one of the known breast-related syndromes) should get an MRI and a mammogram every year beginning at age 30.

Catching cancer early often allows for more treatment options. Some early cancers may have signs and symptoms that can be noticed, but that’s not always the case. There are two very important community screening opportunities this month that will – without a doubt – save somebody’s life with early detection of either prostate or breast cancer.

The Christian Hospital Foundation is hosting a mammo-thon to provide 100 mammograms from 7 a.m.-7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 15, at Northwest HealthCare. Women age 40 and older who haven’t

had a mammogram in the past few years are encouraged to participate. If someone can’t afford a mammogram or has no insurance, the foundation may be able to help. Reservations are required by call 1-855-953-9355 and please make sure to mention the mammo-thon.

Today more than ever it’s important for everyone to be empowered and educated in order to take charge of one’s own health. If you or a loved one falls into the parameters of getting screened for either of these cancers, please take action today and schedule a screening.

Red Cross opens ‘Hurricane Hub’ in St. Louis The American Red Cross of Eastern Missouri has opened a “Hurricane Hub” at its St. Louis headquarters to help people in Florida affected by Hurricane Irma. The hub is currently only one of three locations across the country that will provide remote casework for hurricane survivors.

Volunteer caseworkers will connect people affected by Hurricane Irma with additional resources and referrals to help them start the recovery process. They will also make sure the survivors are registered with FEMA for further assistance.

The hub will be staffed by 10 volunteers, 10 hours a day, for the next four to six weeks.

So far, the St. Louis “Hurricane Hub” is working through 130 cases, with hundreds more expected to come through in the coming weeks.

“This remote casework hub is one more way St. Louis will help the people affected by these devastating storms,” said Cindy Erickson, Regional CEO. “Volunteers from hundreds of miles away will be able to connect hurricane survivors with the resources they need to recover.”

In addition to remote casework, the Red Cross of Eastern Missouri has sent 121 disaster relief workers to Texas, Florida and the U.S. Virgin Islands since the first hurricane

hit in late August. Eastern Missouri also sent truckloads of relief supplies as well as tens of thousands of ready-to-eat meals to support this response effort.

“Amazing volunteers have been leaving home for two or three weeks to work 16hour days and sleep in shelters,” said Cindy Erickson. “They are the Red Cross. Volunteers allow us to accomplish our mission during these major disasters and every day at home.”

The American Red Cross of Eastern Missouri is a proud member agency of the United Way, which makes significant investments every year in Red Cross services.

“I’ve only known Judy in her work with helping with seniors, and she’s just tireless,” said Meatheany. “I think everyone who knows Sister Judy knows her qualities. As board chair, she knows quality and wants to see The Sarah Community maintain their excellence. They have the highest rating that you can achieve in the country. She is very supportive of the administrators and the directors of nursing.

She knows there are challenges, but at the same time she never forgets that her primary responsibility is to the residents.

She’s just fabulous.”

Upon learning about her nomination, Bell initially questioned accepting an honor she believed so many others to be worthy of. However, after some encouragement from Meatheany, she eventually agreed to accept her well-deserved acknowledgement among the gala’s other honorees.

overwhelming surprise. Great humility,” said Bell. “My thought is that I am just doing what God has asked me to do. There is no big thing about this, but my nominator and a number of other people saw that it did make a difference in many people’s lives. I am grateful for their affirmation. I know that at times I feel ageless, but sometimes it’s the remarkable that I question.”

In light of her personal experiences, Bell

has this piece of advice to offer: “Set goals for yourself in life. Work towards those goals. Walk with people that affirm you and give you direction, and believe in yourself.”

Hazelwood School District wraps up its first Community Forum

The Missouri Municipal League (MML) elected city of Hazelwood Mayor Matthew G. Robinson as president during its annual conference in Osage Beach, Missouri.

Robinson was elected to the MML Board of Directors in 2013. He has served as chair and as a member of the Resolutions Committee and as MML’s Vice President.

During his three terms as the city of Hazelwood’s mayor, Robinson has continued to serve on several National League of Cities (NLC) committees, as well as on the Executive Board of the St. Louis County Municipal League and on the Board of North Photo courtesy city of Hazelwood County Inc. Robinson entered local politics in 1994 when he was elected to the Hazelwood City Council for Ward 1. He served in this capacity for 15 years until he was elected mayor in 2009.

The Hazelwood School District (HSD) Board of Education, recently held its first Community Forum of the 2017-2018 school year. The purpose of the forum was to engage in constructive dialog between community members, the board of education and the superintendent.

During the forums, community members submitted questions which were then answered by a panel, which consisted of, three board members and the superintendent. Hazelwood PTA members co-hosted the event by serving as the moderators, greeting guests, and collecting Q&A cards.

“A heartfelt thanks to our community for coming out and participating in constructive dialog,” said HSD BOE President Desiree Whitlock. “I value the input that we received during this forum and I look forward to the next community forum in January.”

The next Community Forum will take place on Jan. 11, 2018 at Hazelwood East High School.

Hazelwood firefighters host ‘Chili Cook-Off’ for bragging rights of best tasting chili The Hazelwood Fire Department is challenging other municipal fire departments/districts to a “Chili Cook-Off ” on Saturday, Oct. 14, at Howdershell Park at 6810 Howdershell Road in Hazelwood from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This event is open to the public, giving local St. Louisans an opportunity to sample some of the best chili in town and choose their favorite.

Teams of firefighters from the following fire agencies have signed up to participate: Hazelwood Fire Department; Black Jack Fire Protection District (two teams); Maryland Heights Fire District; Florissant Valley Fire Protection District; and Robertson Fire Protection District. Each fire department will be competing for the bragging rights of making the best chili in St. Louis. Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded to the first-, second-, and third-place winners.

A panel of five judges will randomly sample the chili made by each team and tabulate their results on a score sheet. The celebrity judges include KLOU 103.3 FM’s Julie Tristan of the “Billy and Julie Morning Show;” Steve Ewing, lead singer of

The Urge and owner of “Steve’s Hot Dogs on the Hill,” Steven Wooley, musician, Mark Woolbright, 2nd District Vice President of IAFF Local 2665, and Kurt Barks, CEO of Complete Auto Body.

The teams’ entries will be turned into the judges by 1 p.m. The top finishers will be announced at 2 p.m., including the “Crowd Favorite.”

This event is being hosted by the Hazelwood Firefighters Community Outreach. Tickets cost $1 per sample for event goers. They can purchase multiple tickets for several chili samples and a chance to vote for the crowd favorite. A portion of the proceeds will benefit The BackStoppers.

Other family-oriented activities include a bounce house, visits from Sparky the Fire Dog and Bella the Elephant from Complete Auto Body, and music entertainment. There will be raffles for nice prizes and 50/50s as well.

In case the ground is too wet to park vehicles on the grass at Howdershell Park, people can park at the Hazelwood Community Center at1186 Teson Road, and a shuttle bus will be provided by Hazelwood’s Parks & Recreation Division.

Approximately 230 guests attended the breakfast to pray for students, families, schools, the community and the country. This year marks the sixth year of the Kiwanis Club prayer breakfast.

‘Taste’ was what all the talk was about

There has been buzz over the last few weeks of what a fantastic event the fifth annual Taste in Ferguson “Year of the Champion” was. On Sept. 10, a picture perfect 78-degree sunny sky greeted a thousand people attending the event.

As the people entered they were handed a voting ballot and given a mission to pick the winners of the food vendor competition. This year’s lineup of 20 vendors, competing in five various categories, brought out their best food dishes.

The voting was close and in the end five winners emerged as the champions. Best BBQ was won by Paul’s Market. Best Chicken was won by Drake’s Place. Best Dessert was won by Ferguson Whistle Stop. Best International was won by The Rice House. Best Pizza was won by Amore’ Pizza.

The food vendors also competed in best decorated booth contest. First place winner was London’s Wing House, second place winner was Helfer’s Pastries and Deli Café’ and the third place winner was Pirrone’s Pizzeria.

The Ferguson Police Dept. and the Ferguson Fire Department had their second annual competition “Cook Off ” for Best Burger. The reigning champion Ferguson Fire Department just squeaked by again to win the coveted bragging rights trophy. Their friendly competition still ended up raising funds for The St. Louis Police

Wives Association.

The great food wasn’t the only thing people got to enjoy. The air was filled by the music of two hometown bands. The Forestwood Boys opened the event, followed by Brian Owens and The Deacons of Soul Band. Three handson activities kept the kids busy while the adults were entertained by three celebrity chef cooking demonstrations under the big tent. The atmosphere was filled with many folks enjoying a wide variety of locally brewed beers while others were sipping on a glass of wine.

The organizers wish to thank Centene Charitable Foundation the premier event sponsor and all the other generous sponsors. They also wish to thank the dedicated volunteers, the 23 food vendors Melissa Herr and Dave Nolander from Marketing Plus, Steve Kates from Ferguson Graphics, Chris Diamond from BO15 Printing and Mark Byrne and all who attended.

All the proceeds from the event go into the Robbie McGartland and Samantha Lipka Memorial Scholarship Funds. These funds are given in the form of scholarships to the local youth to help make a “champion future” for themselves.

City of Hazelwood offers fall leaf collection for residents starting Oct. 16

It’s about that time of year when leaves in the trees start changing colors and fall to the ground. The city of Hazelwood is also gearing up to begin its annual Fall Leaf Collection Program from the week of Oct. 16 to the week of Dec. 18. This is a free service offered by the city to its residents.

A list showing which streets are assigned to each pick-up week can be found in the Fall 2017 Parks and Recreation Activity Guide, pages 21-24. The same list can be found on the city’s website at www.hazelwoodmo.org on the front page under the Latest News section. The dates provided are as accurate as the city’s Public Works Street Division can make them since it’s difficult to predict the weather and mechanical malfunctions.

Residents are asked to rake their leaves to the curb on the weekend prior to their street’s designated pick-up week. Avoid raking leaves into the street because they can obstruct water runoff when it rains, causing big water puddles to form on local streets. Plus, local horticulturists have confirmed that it won’t kill the grass to keep leaves at the curb for a couple of days.

City crews will collect leaves on each street one-time only during the scheduled pick-up week. Leaves will not be collected if vehicles are parked in the street, blocking access to them along the curb. If residents are skipped over because of parked cars in the streets, they can call the Public Works Street Division at 314-7318701 after the vehicle is removed to have their leaves collected. But this must be done during the scheduled pick-up week only.

Residents who prefer to bag their leaves can do so using bio-degradable lawn bags. City crews will pick-up the bags placed at the curb on Monday of the scheduled pick-up week.

There is no limit on the number of bags left for pick-up.

They should avoid putting any brush, vines, grass clippings, trash, metal objects and garden waste in the leaves raked to the curb. This may cause serious injuries to the crew or damage the machinery.

Christian Hospital Foundation to recognize area community leaders The Christian Hospital Foundation will honor community leaders at its ninth annual Legacy Leaders Dinner on Oct. 26, at Norwood Hills Country Club.

Kelvin R. Westbrook, Chair of BJC HealthCare Board of Directors, will be the master of ceremonies for the event.

Gerald W. Moritz, MD, will be recognized with the Physician of the Year Award. This award is bestowed upon a physician who has dedicated much of their career to serving patients at Christian Hospital with compassion and expertise.

Jim Guyre is the Community Vision Award recipient. Guyre is being recognized as a community member who has created economic opportunities to further the North County area’s presence in the region.

Thomas F. George, PhD, will receive the Paul F. Detrick Legacy Leaders Award. This award honors an individual whose impact and commitment has left a legacy in the North County community.

Part of the fun of celebrating Halloween is drawing pictures of ghosts, witches and scary pumpkins. For children living in the city of Hazelwood, they get to participate in the annual Halloween Coloring Contest sponsored by the Hazelwood Parks & Recreation Division.

The coloring pages for this year’s event have just been unveiled. The one for kids in the kindergarten through second grade group shows a duck popping out of a jack-o-lantern. A second coloring page featuring a cartoonish Frankenstein is for youngsters in the third through fifth grade group.

The rules of Hazelwood’s Halloween Coloring Contest are easy to follow. Here are a few of them: • One entry submitted per child • The coloring page must be completed by the child without assistance from siblings or parents • Copies of each coloring page can be picked

During the months of July and August, Vantage Credit Union collected new school supplies and monetary donations in support of two local charities and their efforts to ready area children for the school year.

Vantage has collected school supplies to donate to local charities for 17 years, with this year’s donations benefiting the Foster & Adoptive Care Coalition of Greater St. Louis and the KidSmart store, an educational supply store in Bridgeton providing teachers with free school supplies for area students in need. This

year’s efforts yielded over 2,100 new school supply items and over $1,300 in monetary donations.

Second annual gala raises more than $130,000 for pediatric cancer research

In 2016, Junior League of St. Louis launched Day 366, an initiative aimed at dramatically reducing the infant mortality rate in St. Louis City and St. Louis County. The infant mortality rate in St. Louis City – the number of children that die before their first birthday – is 11.8 deaths per 1,000 babies; higher than the national average of 6.1 deaths per 1,000 babies.

For infants – and their mothers – reaching the 366th day of life as stress-free as possible is vital to changing child mortality rates. Ensuring a mom has quality pre- and post-natal care, that she has a support group of other new and experienced moms, or simply that she has access to clean diapers, wipes and diaper cream to help prevent infection in her baby.

To that end the Junior League of St. Louis collected over 50,000 items to help four St. Louis area organizations that work with new mothers and their families. Saint Louis Crisis Nursery, Affinia Healthcare, Nurses for Newborns Foundation, and Our Lady’s Inn Maternity Home will each benefit from the incredible efforts of the Junior League.

“Our members believe that we could have the greatest impact by focusing our volunteer time, dollars and advocacy efforts on our city’s smallest citizens,” said Amy Mayfield, JLSL president.

DiAnne Mueller, CEO of Saint Louis Crisis Nursery, said, “This incredibly generous donation from Junior League will be helpful to so many families. We are very grateful for the all the Junior League has done to help the Crisis Nursery help St. Louis families.”

The Day 366 1st Birthday Celebration event will be Oct. 28 from 6 to 8:00 p.m. at the JLSL office at 106 N. Kirkwood Road in St. Louis County.

The Kids Shouldn’t Have Cancer Foundation in Memory of Jonny Wade raised more than $130,000 for pediatric cancer research at its second annual gala to support the foundation’s mission to conquer pediatric cancer through research and advocacy.

The Kids Shouldn’t Have Cancer Foundation is a nonprofit organization created in memory of eight-year-old Jonny Wade who passed away on Dec. 24, 2015 after a year-long battle with cancer. Despite his circumstances, Jonny believed he could – and should – make a difference for other children affected by cancer.

His wish that no kid should have cancer inspired his parents Kimberly and Jon Wade to establish the foundation.

“We are beyond humbled and thankful for this amazing show of support to honor Jonny’s wish that no other kid should have cancer,” said Kimberly Wade, Jonny’s mother and foundation founder and president. “We will put these funds directly into the hands of those working hard to make a difference for those impacted by pediatric cancer.”

Every year, the foundation honors a family impacted by cancer at the gala. This year the foundation honored four families: Colten Skinner, survivor of childhood cancer and diagnosed at 17 years old; Sam Biggs, who passed away from childhood cancer at six years old on Jan. 28, 2015; Leo Fleming, who passed away from childhood cancer at three years old on Aug. 4, 2017; and Jonny Wade, who passed away at eight years old on Dec. 24, 2015.

September is designated as National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month to educate Americans that although cancer is the leading cause of disease-related death for children younger than 15 years of age in the U.S., pediatric cancer research is drastically underfunded.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) allots only four percent of its budget for childhood cancers, and pediatric cancer treatments aren’t a focus for pharmaceutical research. The Kids Shouldn’t Have Cancer Foundation works to raise public awareness of these funding issues, influence organizations that allocate federal cancer research funding, improve access to and awareness of clinical trials for families facing pediatric cancer, and fund pediatric cancer research for treatments and cures.

Normandy alums elected to lead Joint Executive Governing Board

McCluer Army JROTC promotes three cadets to leadership roles

Rev. Cedric Portis Sr. and Pamela Westbrooks-Hodge have been elected to serve as president and vice president of the Joint Executive Governing Board of the Normandy Schools Collaborative, respectively.

Rev. Portis has served as senior pastor of Third Presbyterian Church in St. Louis since 2003 and is an adjunct professor of Ethics, Critical Thinking and Organizational Leadership for the University of West Los Angeles.

Westbrooks-Hodge currently works at Express Scripts as a senior director of governance and systems for corporate procurement.

She previously worked for Anheuser-Busch and Bank of America.

Portis and Westbrooks-Hodge are both graduates of Normandy High School.

Sheila Williams will continue as the secretary/treasurer for the JEGB, a role she served in the 2016-2017 school year.

The Pattonville Pirates football season is in full swing. Pirate fans who can’t make it to home games have the opportunity to watch the games via livestreaming, thanks to PattonvilleTODAY, Pattonville High School’s multi-media platform that showcases the work of its student journalists.

The livestreaming and commentary for the games is presented by students in the Pirate Sports Network class, which provides sports news and content for PattonvilleTODAY. The class is new this year and is described in the school’s course catalogue as being focused on “the art of sports storytelling, how to go behind the players’ stats and game scores to report compelling stories, how to break news across

multiple platforms and what sports and media mean to our society. This production-centric course will provide students with a front-row seat to school athletics.”

Journalism teacher Brian Heyman commended the three students who livestreamed and provided live commentary during the football team’s first home game of the season: Brandon Clark, Jorge Coronado and Brandon Tiepelman.

“Pirates Sports Net is a brand-new class this year and I wrote the course to provide opportunities like this to students,” Heyman said. “Òhey blew me away and are so excited about the next game.”

Flavor infusion Sizzling Asian Vegetable Fried Rice with Savory White Wine Glaze

Prep time: 10 minutes | Cook time: 8 minutes | Servings: 4-6, about 1 cup per portion

Ingredients: 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 tablespoon minced fresh garlic 1/2 cup fresh chopped yellow onions 1 cup fresh small white mushrooms, quartered 1/2 cup chopped fresh carrots 1/2 cup chopped fresh zucchini 1/2 cup chopped fresh red bell peppers 1/2 cup chopped fresh yellow bell peppers 3 cups cold, cooked, long-grain white rice 1/2 cup white cooking wine

2 tablespoons oyster sauce 1/2 cup fresh green onions, sliced 1/4-inch thick 2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper Directions: Heat heavy-bottomed, nonstick skillet over high heat. Add vegetable oil, garlic and onions. Stir-fry 1-2 minutes, or until lightly browned. Add mushrooms, carrots, zucchini, red bell peppers and yellow bell

peppers; stir-fry 3 minutes. Add rice; stirfry 3 minutes.

Add cooking wine; stir-fry 2 minutes, or until dry. Add oyster sauce; stir-fry 2 minutes.

Remove from heat. Stir in green onions, sesame oil and black pepper. Transfer to dish or bowl and serve.

Tip: To turn into a main course, add cooked beef, chicken or pork and serve topped with a fried egg.

Sweet and Spicy Korean-Chinese Fusion Cauliflower Bites Prep time: 10 minutes | Cook time: 20 minutes | Servings: 4, about 1 1/2 cups per portion

Ingredients: 6 cups fresh cauliflower florets 2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil 1 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 cup sherry cooking wine 1/4 cup honey 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1 tablespoon white vinegar 2 teaspoons cornstarch 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 small fresh yellow onion, finely chopped 1 tablespoon minced fresh garlic 1 tablespoon Korean-style chili flakes 1/4 cup chopped fresh green onions 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds Directions: Heat oven to 400 F. In large bowl, toss cauliflower, sesame oil and salt until well coated. Arrange on nonstick baking sheet. Bake 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown and tender.

In small bowl, whisk cooking wine, honey, soy sauce, vinegar and cornstarch until well blended; set aside.

In large, nonstick skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add yellow onions and garlic; cook 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown, stirring frequently. Remove from heat. Stir in chili flakes and wine mixture.

Return pan to stove and adjust to medium heat. Bring to simmer, stirring constantly.

Continue cooking and stirring 1-2 minutes, or until thickened. Add cooked cauliflower; stir gently to coat.

Transfer cauliflower to serving dish. Top with green onions and sesame seeds.

Tips: The sauce mixture can also be used on chicken wings or grilled pork chops. In place of Korean-style chili flakes, use 1 teaspoon regular crushed red pepper flakes or 1 tablespoon Aleppo pepper.

Lettuce-Wrapped Korean Short Ribs Prep time: 10 minutes, plus marinating | Cook time: 4 minutes | Servings: 4, about 6 ounces (pre-cooked) per portion

Ingredients: 3 tablespoons packed dark brown sugar, divided 2 teaspoons kosher salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 1 1/2 pounds thinly sliced, boneless beef short ribs 1 cup Marsala cooking wine 6 tablespoons toasted sesame oil 1/4 cup roasted garlic paste 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1/2 cup chopped green onions, divided 1 teaspoon cornstarch 1 head fresh romaine lettuce, separated into large leaves 1/2 cup sliced fresh red radishes 1/2 cup shredded fresh carrots dipping sauce

with meat and add 1/4 cup green onions.

To marinate, refrigerate at least 1 hour, or up to 12 hours.

Directions: In small bowl, combine 2 tablespoons brown sugar, salt, black pepper and red pepper flakes. Sprinkle evenly over short rib slices, gently rubbing into both sides.

Place in re-sealable plastic bag.

In small saucepan, whisk remaining wine mixture and cornstarch until smooth. Bring to simmer over medium heat, whisking constantly. Cook 1 minute, or until thickened, stirring constantly. Set aside until cool. Stir in 2 tablespoons green onions.

In bowl, whisk cooking wine, sesame oil, garlic paste, soy sauce and remaining brown sugar. Pour half of mixture into bag

Remove ribs from marinade, allowing excess to drip off. Discard marinade. Grill 1-2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through.

Cut ribs into 1-inch pieces. Serve with remaining green onions, lettuce, radishes, carrots and warm dipping sauce.

Tips: For fusion tacos, substitute corn or flour tortillas for lettuce leaves. In place of garlic paste, 2 tablespoons minced garlic can be substituted.

A RUN ON

THE MARKET

Somewhere beyond a Category 5 hurricane and the zombie apocalypse lays a disaster which causes far more dread and white-eyed fear. Of course, I am talking about college week at the local Wallymart. Holy-mother-of-panic-stricken humanity! By the looks of terror on these young fresh faces, you would think they just got word that Mom’s all-night diner and laundromat had gone out of business and access to Dad’s Anytime ATM had been terminated. Oh wait…they just did.

This accounts for the aftershock which includes: shortness of breath, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, sweating, heart palpitations and night terrors followed by severe attacks of diarrhea.

Kind of like the side effects after a weekend-long binge at Taco Bobs. But not so, these maladies were caused by being booted out of the comfy family nest. Soon these students will be forced to experience a brand new word in their vocabulary. Independence, you say? No. Poverty.

My husband and I recently happened upon this natural disaster as we were heading out on a short campout. We needed food items and what better place to stock up than at the store of mass quantities and rock bottom prices.

We noticed the parking lot was uncommonly full and the shopping baskets were completely gone. We’d have to balance things on our head.

Inside, carts were overflowing and people were scurrying about like Armageddon had been announced over the intercom, “Attention shoppers, the world as we know it will end tomorrow at this same time. Also, today’s special is tenderloin; two for one in frozen foods.”

Perhaps this was the cause of the sheer pande-

monium at the breakfast aisle, nary a bulk-sized bag of cheap puffed rice cereal was to be found.

And of course, the microwavable pasta section was eviscerated. I saw two brawny boys kickboxing over the last busted open carton of Top Ramen. While they were engaged in combat, a savvy co-ed snuck in behind them and grabbed the treasured item right as one took a firm jolt to his mid-section.

The basics had long been depleted: milk, eggs, bread and ketchup. We finally reached the eye of the hurricane…the toilet paper aisle. All of the good cushy, double ply was long gone; not even a single single-ply sheet was to be found. People were stocking up on the next best thing – paper towels and dinner napkins.

I managed to nab a mangled pineapple from an unsupervised cart along with an expired can of tuna. We debated on buying them. Naw, we’d take our chances dining at Taco Bobs for the weekend.

UMSL women take three titles in tennis The University of Missouri-St. Louis women’s tennis team closed out its fall season by winning three titles at its own UMSL Fall Tournament held last weekend.

Junior Salome Bleuler and senior Patricia Maya won the A Doubles, while sophomore Janet Auclair and senior Annie Hays won the B Doubles.

The singles flight championships were cut short due to rain, but in the A flight, Bleuler was declared the winner, leading Hays 6-0, 2-1 before the match was called. * Nice hardware in the trophy case Lindenwood women win fourth straight in volleyball Lindenwood University’s freshmen led the Lion attack as Sadie Kosciuk posted a career best 14 kills against the Southwest Bearcats to take the match 3-1 at Hyland Arena in St. Charles.

Emily Wylie also had double-digit kills with 12 and defensively Kat Finnerty had six blocks in the contest, a career best for the freshman.

After the Bearcats opened the game up with a point, Megan Hellwege responded by serving the Lions to an eight-point run and there was no looking back.

Other contributors were Alex Dahlstrom the Lions with eight kills, three aces and two blocks along with Ivy Reynolds just missing a doubledouble with 23 assists and nine digs.

Recently they agreed to terms with defender Alex Tozer and forward Jerjer Gibson.

Tozer had an impressive two seasons ago in his rookie season (2015-16) as a member of the Cedar Rapids Rampage.

That season was good enough to earn him an “honorable mention” on the MASL’s All-Rookie Team. Just when it appeared his arena soccer career was ready to take off, Alex was forced to sit out the 2016-17 season due to injury.

His style play on the turf was summed up by sportswriter Douglas Miles saying, “It’s not difficult to pick Alex Tozer out on a soccer field [thanks to] a style that is equal parts vocal, energetic and physical.”

His father is former Milwaukee Wave head coach and former MISL player Keith Tozer.

Gibson brings four seasons of professional arena soccer experience to the Ambush. He has played for the Pennsylvania Roar (MISL), Baltimore Blast (MASL), and the past two seasons with the Syracuse Silver Knights (MASL). He has tallied 34 goals and 13 assists in his 64-game indoor soccer career.

Gibson’s size at 6’2” and 210 pounds and strength should make him a good target in front of the goal and help bolster the Ambush offense. * Great additions

‘American Made’ and ‘American Assassin’ feature home-grown anti-heroes

Whether it’s by accident or design, sometimes movies with similar themes arrive in theaters within weeks of each other. Remember “Armageddon,” the Bruce Willis/Ben Affleck adventure about oil drillers going into space to blow up a killer asteroid? Two months earlier, “Deep Impact” focused on a space mission to destroy a comet heading towards Earth. It’s hard to say who the first to come up with the plot was.

Normally a slow movie month, this past September saw the release of “American Assassin” and “American Made.” Released about a week apart, each film examines the actions of home-grown anti-heroes who have their own agendas.

“American Assassin” tells the story of Mitch Rapp (Dylan O’Brien), a character featured in a series of novels by author Vince Flynn. The film adaptation shows Rapp’s girlfriend being killed in a terrorist attack. Unable to stop her murder, he tries to avenge her death by finding her killer. The CIA takes note of him and his agenda, recruiting Rapp to become part of their covert operations. The young man is a quick study, but he doesn’t like following orders.

Director Michael Cuesta (L.I.E.) has created a watchable, though somewhat muddled, film about an intriguing fictional character. Changed by tragedy, Rapp becomes a virtual killing machine when

it comes to terrorists. Dylan O’Brien does a great job in the title role, but Michael Keaton nearly steals the film as Stan

Hurley, his nononsense trainer. Hurley puts the recruit through his paces, using him on missions to find a former operative now known as “Ghost.”

Mitch Rapp is fictional, but the real-life story of Barry Seal in “American Made” is almost unbelievable.

According to interviews and reports, Seal, a pilot for TWA, had been smuggling marijuana and other contraband before getting involved with a drug cartel. He also found himself mixed up with the Sandinistas and the messy Iran-Contra affair back in the 1980’s.

Director Doug Liman (“Edge of Tomorrow”) uses film stock that gives “American Made” the look and feel of a 1970’s-era film. Though some liberties are taken with the story, it is a

wild and energetic look at a colorful character.

Tom Cruise takes the lead role, giving Barry Seal an impish grin and an “aw-shucks” attitude about his illegal activities.

The actor’s narration about Seal’s activities also is fairly lighthearted.
