The championship event, hosted by Owasso High School, will feature 62 high school marching bands in the preliminary competition, all of which will be evaluated by a panel of nationally recognized music educators and marching band experts. The top 14 bands will advance to the evening finals competition, which will ultimately name the Super Regional Champion.

The thousands of students who will perform at this championship showcase the dedication, teamwork and mastery required and fostered through music and arts education.”

Hall of Fame

To Play at Bands of America Marching Band Championship Outstanding high school marching bands from throughout Missouri, Mississippi, Minnesota, South Dakota, Illinois, Colorado, Oklahoma, Nevada, Arkansas, Kansas, Texas, Kentucky, and Tennessee will compete in one of the nation’s most prominent championships, Music for All’s Bands of America Super Regional Championship at St. Louis, presented by Yamaha. The event will be held at the Edward Jones Dome (901 North Broadway) in St. Louis on October 18-19, and the St. Louis Rock Stars & Majorettes Drum Line (from Larimore Elementary School which is part of the Hazelwood School District) will perform the drum cadence during the final awards ceremony.

The group of local kids is led by Mrs. Jackie Hooker, who says, “Most kids in the group are between 9 – 13 years old, [and] they really look out for one another. They treat each other like family. They have such a great willingness to learn and to help each other learn. I think that is so wonderful about them.”

“Ring of Fire: The Life and Music of Johnny Cash”

Troupe America is currently showcasing the life and music of Johnny Cash in the Broadway National Tour of Ring of Fire: The Life and Music of Johnny Cash.

Ring of Fire is really more a concert than a play. An ensemble of eight musicians, Tim Drake, Steve Lasiter, Candice Lively, Brittany Parker, Amberly Rosen, Jason Uhlmann, Chad Willow and Chet Wollan, put on an amazing show of talent. They share the narration that gives the audience the backbone of Cash’s life while not attempting to dramatize the individuals. Each speaks the voice of Cash. The eight musicians in the ensemble all move easily between instruments (sometimes switching mid-song) while singing the songs that tell the life of Johnny Cash. They play everything from guitar, drums, violin and bass to tin cups, washboards and spoons.

The real story of Johnny Cash is told in his music which is not presented chronologically in the show but instead categorically. Dividing the show into four parts—Boyhood Years, Opry and Fame, Dark Years, Redemption and Celebration—gives the audience the chance to see the influence that Cash’s life experiences played in the creation of his music. The majority of the songs were written by Cash or in collaboration with another writer.

Ring of Fire is playing on Sunday, October 27 at 7pm at the Florissant Civic Center Theatre located at the corner of Parker Road and Waterford Drive.

Local Wins Carl Schurz Heritage Award Larry Marsh began his lifelong interest in German language and culture in 1963 when he was a college exchange student to the University of Göttingen in Germany. Since 2000, he has been the coordinator of the German Culture Center at the University of Missouri–St. Louis.

Recently, the German American Heritage Society of St. Louis recognized his work promoting greater understanding of German culture by naming him the 2013 Carl Schurz Heritage Award recipient.

Hazelwood Begins Fall Leaf Collection

The City of Hazelwood begins its annual Fall Leaf Collection Program during the week of October 21. This municipality is one of a handful that provide this convenient service to its residents.

Each year, the schedule is rotated to prevent one particular area from always being first or last. Two separate pick-ups are scheduled for every street. A complete list showing which streets are assigned to each pick-up week can be found in the Hazelwood Parks and Recreation’s Fall 2013 Activity Guide or on the City’s website at www.hazelwoodmo.org. The dates provided are as accurate as the City’s Public Works Street Division can make them since it’s difficult to predict the weather and mechanical breakdowns.

Residents are asked to rake their leaves to the curb on the weekend before the designated pick-up week for their street. Avoid raking leaves into the street because they can obstruct water runoff when it rains, causing ponding on local streets. Leaves can be bagged, but residents must use bio-degradable bags. Bagged leaves are picked up on Monday for each designated pick-up week.

City crews will collect leaves on each street one time only during their scheduled pick-up week. Leaves will not be collected if vehicles are parked in the street, blocking access to the curb. If residents are skipped over because of parked vehicles in the street, they can still call the Street Division at 314.731.8701 after moving the cars to have their leaves collected. But this must be done during the scheduled pick-up week only.

Residents should avoid putting any brush, vines, grass clippings, trash, garbage, metal objects, and garden waste in the leaves that are to be collected. This may cause serious injury to the crew and damage the machinery. City crews will be collecting leaves only.

AARP Tax Aide Volunteers for 2014

Local Doctors and the CDC Recommend Families Get Flu Shot Early

Another tax season will soon be here and the St. Louis area AARP Tax-Aide, a free volunteer-run tax counseling and preparation service, is seeking volunteers to assist local residents with their tax needs.

Classes for tax preparation certification are held in December and January. Volunteers will work at least four hours a week during tax season, February 1st through April 15th, at locations within St. Louis and St. Louis County. You do not need to be an AARP member to volunteer.

Last year’s flu season affected an alarming number of people, and experts predict this year’s flu season could strike as early as October. That’s why the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local physicians recommend families protect themselves now with the 2013 influenza vaccine.

Vaccinations have been proven to decrease the incidence of influenza and its potentially deadly complications, particularly for those most affected by flu – children and seniors. Local AFC/Doctors Express and American Family Care facilities are stocking up on flu vaccines and will have them available throughout the flu season. No appointment is required and patients may walk in for a flu shot at their convenience.

“The severity and prevalence of the flu each year is one of the most unpredictable events in medicine. However, it is highly predictable that if you get a flu shot, your chances of getting the flu are significantly less,” says D. Bruce Irwin, MD, owner and founder of American Family Care. “Too many people fail to take the flu seriously, and more than half of all Americans fail to protect themselves with a simple influenza vaccination. With schools in session, the spread of germs is inevitable and now is the time to protect yourself and your family from influenza. Last year we saw more people infected that could have been protected, leading to more seniors hospitalized from the flu than ever before.”

Flu Fast Facts: • The U.S. flu season can run from October through May. • The CDC reports last year’s 2012-2013 flu season resulted in more hospitalizations of people over 65 than any flu season on record. Flu-related illnesses cause some 200,000 hospitalizations each year.

• People most at risk of the flu and further complications are young children, folks over age 65 and pregnant women. However, the pandemic H1N1 that surfaced in 2009 was most common in teenagers and young adults.

• 90% of flu related deaths are people age 65 or older.

• Pediatricians typically offer vaccines for children only.

• The past few years, on average, 42% of Americans were vaccinated against the flu --meaning more than half of all Americans don’t typically get a flu shot.

Even with a vaccination, you still need to protect yourself.

Beat The Bug: • Bring your own pen – to the bank, grocery store, even to touch the ATM. Anything a sick person touches can harbor germs, including money, mail, ATM keypads, elevator buttons, etc.

• Use paper – replace hand towels in bathrooms with paper towels. They’re not as pretty, but paper towels can help get rid of a ton of germs that live in damp towels.

• Wash hands frequently – use soap, warm water and rinse long enough to say the alphabet or sing “Happy Birthday.” Recent studies show plain soap and water work just fine.

• Use a proper hand sanitizer (at least 60% alcohol) anytime you touch anything. Make sure you use sanitizer, even under fingernails, where germs hide.

• Clean with disinfectant – viruses and bacteria can live up to two hours or longer on doorknobs, toys, TV remote controls, keyboards, mouse pads, refrigerator handles, counter tops, railings, faucets, bathroom floors and more.

Recent Greater North County Chamber Ribbon Cutting: World Finance Corporation

Legal Services for the Mentally Ill To assist underserved adults who are chronically mentally ill living in St. Louis city, Legal Services of Eastern Missouri (LSEM) has launched the Legal Advocacy for Adults with Mental Illness (LAAMI) project.

The new initiative is being funded by an $86,000 grant (renewal for an additional two years) from the St. Louis Mental Health Board.

Led by staff attorney Patrick Mobley, the threeyear project will represent clients in a wide range of civil legal matters with the goal of solving their legal issues while allowing them to continue their mental health treatment.

A part-time practicum student in social work will assist Mobley with oversight provided by Dan Underwood, Managing Attorney for LSEM’s Children Legal Alliance. To help Mobley identify clients, LAAMI will collaborate with other St. Louis Mental Health Board-funded agencies that provide direct services to adults with mental illness.

Many friends and family members gathered on the corner of rue St. Francois and St. Jacques on Wednesday, September 25 to unveil the 16th Walk Through History plaque in honor of the late Henry Hendel. The plaque dedication took place right before the last Wednesday Night Out event which was being hosted by Hendel’s Café.

The Hendel family has played a major role in the historical fabric of the City of Florissant. Henry Hendel was a life-long resident of Florissant and a World War II Army veteran. He was active member of the American Legion Post 444 and the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He operated Hendel’s Market for forty-seven years as a popular neighborhood grocery store. He loved

Florissant and was a true ambassador for the City. The legacy of Hendel’s Market continues.

The Scholarship Foundation’s Interest-Free Loan Fall Application The Scholarship Foundation of St. Louis is accepting loan applications until November 15, 2013 from traditional and nontraditional students seeking a first degree at an accredited, nonprofit school. Qualified students can be issued a renewable, interest-free loan of up to $4,500 for the upcoming 2014 spring semester. Those interested may apply at www.sfstl.org.

The Scholarship Foundation of St. Louis is a nonprofit organization that helps provide postsecondary access to all eligible St. Louis area students, regardless of economic background, through interest-free loans. The loan is meant to work in conjunction with other aid (such as grants, scholarships, federal loans, family funding, etc.) to provide the final dollars needed to attend college.

Applicants are selected on the basis of academic potential, personal character, and financial need.

They must be enrolled in technical, bachelor’s, or associate degree programs at accredited, nonprofit institutions within the United States. Applicants

should have graduated high school with at least a 2.0 GPA or earned a GED. Additionally, they must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. legal resident and a permanent resident of the St. Louis metropolitan area for at least two years prior to the date of application. This area includes St. Louis City and St. Louis County; the Missouri counties of Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln, St. Charles, Warren, and Washington; and the Illinois counties of Bond, Calhoun, Clinton, Jersey, Madison, Macoupin, Monroe, and St. Clair.

Ferguson-Florissant Schools Recognize Students & Staff The Ferguson-Florissant School District Board of Education honored the achievements of students and staff at the meeting on October 9.

Stanley Potts is an English lad left in the care of his aunt and uncle. Quite by accident, his uncle gets into the fishcanning business. Suddenly Stanley is turning out cans of sardines and mackerels.

Uncle Ernie expects Stanley to slave away. This doesn’t fly with Aunt Annie. On his birthday, she sends Stanley to the fair to have fun. The boy is captivated by goldfish in baggies offered as prizes in the Hook-A-Duck booth.

Stanley is worried that the goldfish will die and talks the booth manager into letting him take them home. The fish spawn an idea in his uncle’s head—he’ll can a new product sure to be solid gold.

The loss of his goldfish upsets Stanley. The boy hits the road, taking a job washing ducks in the Hook-A-Duck booth, later meeting a diver who thrills crowds by swimming in a tank with flesh-eating piranhas. Soon Stanley is a diver too.

Readers will want to fin-ish this quirky read in one sitting, and while there is plenty of giggle, there are teachable moments too, about courage, destiny and accepting loved ones. This Stanley is anything but a flat character.

Cinnamon Oatmeal Bars Serves 8 Ingredients: 1 cup flour 1 cup old-fashioned oatmeal 3/4 cup light brown sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 8 tablespoons butter, melted 1 cup Musselman’s Apple Butter

Heavenly Sweet Potato Casserole Serves 8

Ingredients: 2 pounds (3 large) sweet potatoes, peeled, cubed 3/4 cup Musselman’s Apple Butter 2 eggs 1/4 cup heavy cream 1/4 cup honey 1/4 cup melted butter 1/3 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup pecans, chopped, optional 2 tablespoons butter, melted Directions: Place potatoes in medium saucepan; add about 1 inch of water. Cover and cook 10 to 15 minutes or until tender. Drain very well. Heat oven to 350°F. Spray 1 1/2-quart casserole with cooking spray. Mix apple butter, eggs, cream, honey and 1/4 cup melted butter. Add potatoes and beat by hand or with electric mixer until mashed and well mixed. Spoon into casserole.

Directions: Preheat oven to 350°F. Coat an 8-inch by 8-inch baking pan with vegetable cooking spray. Line with heavy-duty foil, leaving an overhang on two sides to facilitate removal of bars from pan. Coat foil with cooking spray.

Mix brown sugar, pecans and remaining butter in small bowl. Sprinkle over potatoes.

Bake 20 to 30 minutes or until hot and bubbly.

Mix flour, oatmeal, sugar and salt in medium bowl. Stir in butter with fork until well mixed and clumps form, and then spread half the oatmeal mixture over foiled pan bottom, pressing to form thin crust. Spread butter over crust and then sprinkle remaining oatmeal mixture on top.

Bake until crisp and golden brown, 30 to 40 minutes. Cool to room temperature.

Use foil “handles” to remove bars from pan. Cut into squares and serve.

Who Deserves the Cardinal MVP Status?

This won’t hit the streets until Wednesday when the Cards are playing the Los Angeles Dodgers but after the final game of the playoffs with the formidable Pirates, the question of MVP arose.

Most thought it should be Yadier Molina, one of the best catchers that ever strapped on a face mask. Combined with Adam Wainright, these two may be the most formidable duo that ever played the game.

With two teams as closely matched for the playoffs as the Cards and the Pirates, it could’ve gone either way.

What disappoints fans of pro baseball is to see a pitcher throwing a no-hitter and lose one to nothing because the opposing team got a lucky break and scored a run.

It didn’t happen in the last game, thank heaven. We also saw some of the best fielding of the entire season by both sides with some spectacular plays of impossible diving catches.

This is baseball at its finest. The best of the best are showing why they are.

But who’s the best candidate for MVP? Is it Adam Wainright that allowed only one run or Yadier Molina that seems to have done everything well, including helping Wainright stay focused and advised? Is it David Freese, that homered first and brought in two runs to put the Cards on the scoreboard? Matt Adams?

Matt Holiday? Is it the others that performed those spectacular plays or managed to get hits and score runs?

Doesn’t seem fair, does it?

If we’re looking for heroes in a time when they have all but vanished in a smoky cloud of greed and hate that have divided us, we can find them in the Cards. It’s no wonder our children avoid the realities we are leaving them with and go with sports heroes. St. Louis is lucky to have a winning baseball team to make the fans cheer and feel good because they live here.

Of course, the alternate extreme is the Rams. The only thing they’ve proven is crime pays well when remembering the millions ripped off from the taxpayers to bring them here and the cost of a new enclosed stadium they let run down only to beg for millions to rehab

it so they’ll win. No heroes here.

As I said, our heroes are vanishing, but at least we have a winning baseball team even though it excludes the conniving owners and agents filling their pockets with gold that would’ve made Croseus swoon.

As you’ve probably gathered, I love baseball in all its forms. As a boy, I would’ve played in blizzard if I could’ve found others to play who were as crazy as I was. My school didn’t have football until after I graduated so I never experienced it other than throwing passes if someone had a football. There weren’t many. My father had a soccer ball left over from his youth, and my friends thought it was a shrunken basketball.

However, I never became a fanatical, handkerchiefspinning fan with a face painted with the team colors.

I don’t wear team shirts and seldom if ever read sports pages. I just like baseball. I don’t even go to the stadium to watch. I tease that if they won’t let me play, I won’t come. Besides, I can see it much better on TV and can even tolerate the irritating commercial breaks in the middle of a rhubarb. If I go to a local pub or a house party to watch, it’s usually more fun...even if they lose.

I may be lying about that last part.
