A combined effort St. Louis City and County join forces for a $175 million renovation of the America’s Center to help attract more meetings and conventions

By Charlotte Beard Many St. Louisans may be able to name the city of St. Louis’ mayor that was in office between 1965 and 1973. Many may even be able to tell you the connection between that mayor and The America’s Center Convention Complex. However, most people may not realize that since the time of Mayor Alfonso J. Cervantes’ spearheading of the original development of the Cervantes Convention Center (part of the complex) it hasn’t undergone any renovations.

On Oct. 3, St. Louis City and County officials announced the America’s Center (AC) Next Gen Project estimated at $175 million, which will update and expand the complex. The official date for commencement of the project has not yet been announced.

“I’m excited to announce a joint commitment between St. Louis City and St. Louis County in America’s Center,” said Mayor Lyda Krewson of the city of St. Louis.

“This investment has paid off for the St. Louis region in the past and it will continue to do so in the future.”

Following the opening of the Cervantes Convention Center in 1977, it underwent a south end expansion in 1993. Two years later The Dome at America’s Center opened.

The growing competition with meeting/ convention facilities and amenities in other Midwest cities has caused St. Louis officials to find this AC Next Gen Project necessary. Sources indicate that St. Louis has experienced a decline in event bookings for the downtown facility.

out-of-town visitors who stay in our county hotels and motels,” said County Executive Steve Stenger of St. Louis County.

To clarify, the project will be funded by the extension of payments from the designated fund set up through the hotel and motel taxes collected in St. Louis City and County, which was initiated to build The Dome at America’s Center. There will be no new tax on residents.

The AC Next Gen Project includes several goals. The addition of 92,000 square feet of exhibit space will be an expansion to the existing 502,000 square-feet of exhibit space. The expansion will allow larger events.

Currently, the complex has a 28,000 square-foot ballroom; this project will create a 65,000 square-foot multi-purpose ballroom and meeting area with 20,000 square-feet pre-function event space. The Gen Project also aims to improve service access to the current and new exhibit halls and ballrooms.

Though the center currently has 12 loading docks that will be renovated, this investment will bring the addition of 26 new loading docks. All docks with be enclosed to enhance access and beautification of the surrounding areas. In addition, convention attendees and area workers will have the privilege of enjoying a new outdoor pavilion.

“The America’s Center plays a critical role as an economic driver for the entire region,” stated Kathleen ‘Kitty’ Ratcliffe, President of Explore St. Louis. “The complex is truly a window for the hundreds of thousands of event attendees who visit us and are hopefully inspired to return here for future leisure or business event purposes.

On an annual basis, St. Louis hosts over 25 million visitors who spend more than $5.8 billion in our community. Expanding and upgrading the America’s Center will help us build on these visitor numbers and the 88,000 local jobs they help support throughout our region’s hospitality industry.”

Career Resource Center at Northwest HealthCare Siteman construction site provides insight to career opportunities Christian Hospital and BJC HealthCare have partnered with Tarlton Corporation to create a community resource at Northwest HealthCare for careers in construction and health care.

The Career Resource Center, located in a trailer on the Siteman construction site at Northwest HealthCare at 1225 Graham

Rd. in Florissant, creates a space for high school students and community agencies to gain knowledge on career opportunities within these industries. This includes recruitment, training and career development through technology and real-life interaction while also highlighting the potential of these careers.

The Career Resource Center is open one day a week for scheduled high school visits and the third Saturday of each month for community groups and individuals to stop by.

COMMUNITY VOICES Improved housing market tied to improving education

By Dr. Rance Thomas Within the last couple of years, far North County has been moving forward economically and educationally. I used to drive up and down various subdivisions in the city of Florissant, Ferguson, Hazelwood and unincorporated areas in North County and there were numerous homes for sale or rent. It was really alarming to see these communities possibly deteriorating so drastically in a short period of time.

Now I drive up and down these same areas and see very few homes for sale or rent. In fact, some homes are being sold before “for sale” signs can be posted. A longtime acquaintance and resident on my street had a “for sale” sign posted on his property a couple months ago, and he sold it within two days for $5,000 more than he was asking for it. I remember seeing “for sale” signs posted for months and sometime close to a year before they were sold and for a lot less than what the owners were asking for them.

I know the improvement in sales of homes has to do with the improvement in the economy, but I wonder if it is also due to the improvement in education or schools within these areas. It is a well-

known fact that one of the major factors that parents with school-age children look for in buying homes are the schools and their reputation for providing quality education.

As we know, the quality of education has improved and is still improving in North County. For example, the Hazelwood School district is fully accredited and is very close to being accredited at the highest level and is working very hard to achieve this rating. After attending a “state of the district” event a couple of weeks ago at the Hazelwood District, it was demonstrated that it is making great progress under Superintendent Dr. Nettie Collin-Hart and its new leadership team.

As for Ferguson/Florissant it is still fully accredited, and is working very hard to raise its accreditation level as well. With the departure of Dr. Art McCoy, its accreditation began to decline, but under its new leadership of Dr. Joseph Davis and his team, there is evidence that it is improving significantly. Of course, we have all heard about the districts in Riverview Gardens and Normandy that lost their accreditation. However, there is evidence that both have improved significantly and

have been awarded provisional accreditation, and students will no longer have to be transferred to higher performing schools. These transfers caused these districts to lose funding because they had to pay for these transfers. They can now use these funds in helping to make even more progress.

Further, Jennings School District made fantastic improvement under the former leadership of Dr. Tiffany Anderson and continues to improve further under the leadership of Dr. Art McCoy and his team.

As a result, North County is progressing very nicely and is still a wonderful place to live, work and raise children; and by working together we can make it even a better place.

Registration underway for The Scholarship Foundation awards upcoming Give Kids A Smile clinic $4.7 million to area students Submitted photo

Patient registration continues for the Give Kids A Smile free dental care clinic, set for Oct. 26, and Oct. 27, at Saint Louis University’s Center for Advanced Dental Education. The event is designed to meet the dental health needs of toddlers and school-aged children through 14 years old (through the eighth grade), who are Medicaid-eligible, qualify for the free school lunch program or need dental assistance due to other special circumstances. The organization has the capacity and resources to provide comprehensive dental services, completely free of charge, for up to 600 kids.

Care is provided by appointment only on a first-come, first-served basis. Patient registration can be completed through Friday, Oct. 19, by calling Give Kids A Smile at 636-397-6453.

Children registered to attend the upcoming clinic will receive X-rays, professional cleanings, fluoride treatments and sealants, as well as fillings, root canals and oral surgery, as needed. Give Kids A Smile works hard to create a non-intimidating, fun-filled environment for each young patient that includes an entertainment area featuring music, interactive games, face painters and balloon artists. Each child goes home with a free healthy lunch and smile bag that includes a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss and more.

“Oral health issues are preventable yet remain one of the most common chronic childhood diseases,” said Erica Steen, executive director of Give Kids A Smile. “So much is dependent on sticking to a dental health routine of regularly brushing, flossing and visiting the dentist. Unfortunately, there are countless kids, right here in St. Louis, who don’t own their own toothbrush and rarely, if ever, see a dentist. Some families are facing temporary hardships, like job loss, and simple cannot afford it at the present time. Regardless of the reasoning, we are here to help. We have 250 local dental professionals and community volunteers coming together over a two-day period to address the local need. An impact will be made, change will occur – one sweet smile at a time. The key is making sure people know this resource exists.”

Give Kids A Smile’s clinics are held each February and October and have succeeded at providing over 16,000 local underserved children with $9.1 million worth of free, comprehensive dental care since 2002. These events are made possible thanks to founding sponsor Delta Dental of Missouri and other contributors, including the Dana Brown Charitable Trust, American Direct Marketing Resources, LLC, William R. Orthwein Jr. and Laura Rand Orthwein Foundation, St. Louis Cardinals Care, Greater St. Louis Dental Society and Saint Louis University’s Center for Advanced Dental Education.

Change is challenging. Just over one year ago, The Scholarship Foundation of St. Louis had closed ScholarShop after 57 years of operation, and the community was concerned about the future of the nearly 100-year old organization. A groundswell of community support has fortified its work in response to these significant changes.

The foundation remains laser-focused on meeting pressing student needs, demonstrated by the awarding of $4,709,700 in interest-free loans and grants to 501 area students. That’s an increase of 20 percent over 2017. This year not only has the foundation awarded more dollars to students, but it has also added new programs and expanded existing programs, putting even more students on the path to success.

The Scholarship Foundation promotes educational access and degree attainment for St. Louis area residents through a combination of financial support, advising services, and student-led advocacy. Diminishing state grant aid and increasing tuition costs places higher education out of

reach for a growing proportion of area students.

The cornerstone of the foundation’s work is to close the financial aid gap. Each year, the foundation provides last-dollar aid to 500 students and counsels more than 6,000 students and family members on navigating the complex college admissions process.

Since its founding in 1920, The Scholarship Foundation has assisted 11,500 students with over $84 million in direct financial support to pursue postsecondary education. As the foundation approaches its centennial in 2020, it invites the community to celebrate the values put forth by its founding mothers who worked together to create an affordable path to higher education.

Degree attainment is key to family economic mobility and the strength of the St. Louis region.

Hazelwood starts offering its free fall leaf collection service to residents

This week kicks off the beginning of Hazelwood’s annual Fall Leaf Collection Program for this year. Collection period runs to Dec. 21. This is one of the free services that the city of Hazelwood offers to its resident property owners.

A list showing which streets are assigned to each pick-up week on the schedule can be found in the Fall 2018 Parks & Recreation Activity Guide, pages 22-23. The same list can be found on the City’s website at www.hazelwoodmo.org on the front page under the Latest News section. Please be aware that the schedule may vary due to the weather.

Residents are being asked to rake their leaves to the edge of the street curb (right-of-way) during the weekend prior to their street’s designated pick-up week on the schedule. Avoid raking leaves into the street because they can clog the sewers, obstruct water runoff when it rains and get stuck to the surface when the weather freezes.

Those who prefer bagging their leaves can do so using bio-degradable trash bags. But the bags of leaves must be at the curb by 7 a.m. on Monday of the designated pick-up week.

Christian Hospital Foundation to recognize area community leaders The Christian Hospital Foundation will honor community leaders at its tenth annual Legacy Leaders Dinner on Oct. 25, at Norwood Hills Country Club.

Sister Karl Mary Winkelmann, SSND, will receive the Paul F. Detrick Legacy Leaders Award. This award honors an individual whose impact and commitment has left a legacy in the North County community.

The Florissant Rotary is the Community Vision Award recipient.

The Florissant Rotary is being recognized as an organization that has created economic opportunities to further the North County area’s presence in the region.

William D. Zweig, MD, will be recognized with the Physician of the Year Award. This award is bestowed upon a physician who has dedicated much of their career to serving patients at Christian Hospital with compassion and expertise.

Rev. Cedric Portis, Third Presbyterian Church, will receive the Carpe Diem Award for recognizing needs in the community and choosing to ‘seize the day’ and take action to provide necessary resources in North County.

Lighthouse for the Blind-Saint Louis acquires assets of Badge Magic Lighthouse for the Blind-Saint Louis (LHB), a nonprofit manufacturing and packaging organization with a dedicated social service mission, has acquired all assets of Badge Magic, a company based in Bellevue, Washington.

Badge Magic is a developer and supplier of “peel & stick” fabric adhesives for securing badges and other fabrics to clothing and uniforms, eliminating the need for sewing or ironing-on the fabric additions. Badge Magic is used by the Boy Scouts of America, Awana association of international evangelical Christian nonprofit organizations; and other major organizations in the U.S. and Canada as an approved alternative to sewing badges to uniforms.

The acquisition of Badge Magic assets closed Sept. 21 and is the fourth acquisition by LHB Industries since 2014. It is expected to increase LHB revenues and employment by expanding operations, providing more employment for people who are blind or legally blind and increasing income to support Lighthouse “See the Future” programs for children and young adults who are legally blind in Missouri and southern Illinois.

Dementia and Alzheimer’s Care Consultation Day to be hosted

by Christian Hospital Christian Hospital is partnering with the Alzheimer’s Association to offer free consultations to discuss dementia and Alzheimer’s related issues. This can include things like caregiver’s stress, diagnosis questions, resources and services, coping with behaviors and learning how to communicate with someone with dementia. Consultations are conducted by a social worker for an hour to answer your questions and address concerns.

Consultations will be held Oct. 20, Nov. 3 and Nov. 10 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at Northwest HealthCare at 1225 Graham Rd. in Florissant, MO 63031.

Hazelwood PD offers collection site for National Take-Back Drug Day The Hazelwood Police Department (HPD) will be partnering with the DEA and other state/ local law enforcement agencies for a national Take-Back Drug Day on Oct. 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The drop-off location will be at HPD’s station behind City Hall, 415 Elm Grove Lane, under the green POLICE canopy.

This is a great opportunity for local residents to rid their medicine cabinets of expired, unwanted or unused pharmaceutical controlled substances and other medications. Keeping pill bottles around the bathroom and kitchen can often tempt family members to try them and get addicted to them. The event will help draw national attention to the growing problem of opioid drug abuse.

No questions will be asked when residents drop off their medications. The program is anonymous. In addition, none of the prescriptions will be inventoried, counted or logged in. All material turned in will be incinerated.

Those who bring medications to Hazelwood’s Take-Back Drug Day collection point will be given a flyer about NOCO Cares, a program offered by the city’s Fire Department.

Capt. Veronica Dolan, Paramedic/SURRT Coordinator, has made Hazelwood the first fire service agency in North County to launch such

a program for patients who may be struggling with substance abuse.

For those who sign up for NOCO Cares, Capt.

Dolan provides free assistance in expediting their assessment or admission into a treatment center. A red bag is given as well which includes a rescue kit containing two 4-mg doses of NARCAN in nasal spray and a one-way valve to give rescue breathes.

Any solid dosage of pharmaceutical products (tablets, capsules, etc.) in consumer containers can be accepted. Small (pint size) bottles of cough syrups may be dropped off if they are sealed in their original container. Donors must ensure that the cap is tightly sealed to prevent leakage.

Do not drop off the following: EPI’s; Inhalers; Syringes; and Needles. These items may be contaminated due to potential hazards posed by blood-born pathogens. Plus, they are combustible when incinerated.

Dr. Patrick Johnson, a sixth-grade teacher at Walnut Grove Elementary School, has set the state record for 38-year-olds in the two-mile run. Johnson set the record of 13:16 during the 2018 Sweatfest sponsored by the Strafford School Foundation in Strafford, Missouri, held this past July. In addition to setting the record, Johnson supported the Strafford School Foundation through his participation in the event.

Johnson, a role model at Walnut Grove who en-

courages students to stay fit, went on to demonstrate his speed and skill on the track by placing first in seven other events at the Sweatfest. He placed first in the 200m dash, 400m dash, 800m run, 3000m run, as well as first in the short and long hurdles.

Johnson’s seven-first place finishes qualify him to compete in the State Games of America in Lynchburg, Virginia next summer.

We attended a wedding reception the other night.

My husband took a look at the invitation beforehand and said, “Do we know these people?”

Me: “Nope. Never seen them in my life?”

“Why are we getting an invitation then?”

“I think I saw the mom of the bride at the grocery store once. Her cantaloupe fell out of her cart. I picked it up so she handed me an invitation.”

“That’s it? Then why are we going?”

“Simple. Are you hungry?”

“Always.”

“Is it dinnertime?”

“Yes.” “Have I cooked anything or do I intend to cook anything?”

“No. Ooh!” A lightbulb went off in his head.

“I’ll get dressed.”

For the prime wedding season, spring through fall, I have planned our meals around wedding invitations. We get at least two a week. It’s a great way to get fed.

We headed over to the reception center. People were milling about or standing in line to meet the bride and groom.

“We’re not going to talk to these people are we?” My husband grumbled.

“Of course! That would be rude not to. Especially after we eat their buffet.”

We made our way up to the happy couple.

“Hi there. Love your dress. This is my husband; he doesn’t speak. I picked up your mom’s cantaloupe in the produce section back in May.” “Oh my gosh! The bride gushed. “She told me

all about it. Mom said her hands were full and that she would have dropped everything and would never have been allowed back in the store again! So glad to finally meet you. Be sure and get some buffet.”

I turned to my husband and winked then we helped ourselves to some coconut shrimp and teriyaki skewered

chicken strips.

“I guess that was worth it,” my husband admitted rubbing his stomach.

“Wait till tomorrow,” I said.

“Another one? Who is it this time?”

“Oh, some lady I ran into at the department store. Her son’s getting married. She was standing behind me at the checkout with a load of stuff. I finished my purchase and passed her my 30 percent off coupon. She handed me an invitation. I hope you like prime rib!”

Divers do well in pool for Lindenwood The Lindenwood University divers competed at the Indy Diving Invite in Indianapolis on Friday and Saturday with multiple Lions having good showings.

On day one, Madison Arnold led the way for Lindenwood, finishing in second place overall with a cumulative total of 371.65.

Katie Werkema was the second-best finisher on day one, compiling a cumulative score of 368.6 and finishing in third place.

Other Lindenwood notables include Ashley Hollway (fourth place overall, cumulative score: 367.4) and Allie Steinhauser (fifth place overall, cumulative score: 356.1).

Dylan Callaghan finished fourth on the men’s side with a cumulative score of 423.4.

On day two, Ashley Holloway improved from day one numbers as she finished in second place overall with a cumulative score of 443.9, while Madison Arnold (third place overall, cumulative score of 371.85) and Katie Werkema (fourth place overall, cumulative score of 355.45) finished right behind Holloway.

Soroptimist International of Greater St. Louis, a volunteer organization for business and professional women, is

pleased to announce its first Road Rally fundraiser and is looking for participants and sponsors. Participants in the Road Rally will leave from the Knights of Columbus grounds beginning at 10 a.m. and embark on a journey through Florissant and Hazelwood. The Road Rally will end at an undisclosed location where the fun will continue with lunch, live music provided by Dennis Schilligo and activities for the young and young at heart. The entry fee is $50 per car up to four adults and $10 for each additional adult (kids under 12 free). Each team must have a least two people, a driver and a navigator. Casual and institutional investors have seen this happen many times, especially after the sub-prime housing bubble burst in 2008. The financial markets can and do recover over time, but it takes patience to ride out the shockwaves.

The 2000 drama “Boiler Room” tips its financial cap to Stone’s “Wall Street” in several scenes. Giovanni Ribisi plays Seth Davis, a young man who joins a firm that specializes, like Jordan Belfort, in pumpand-dump schemes. The film’s main characters idolize Gordon Gekko and all his words of financial wisdom, but Seth Davis, like Bud Fox, soon sees the darker side to his own behavior.

Though it doesn’t look like we are in the same situation outlined in “The Big Short,” the financial markets are going to take some time to settle down. To quote Mr. Billy Ray Valentine again, while some are panicking, others are trying to “buy cheap and go long.”

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work.
