The St. Louis County Department of Public Health issues guidelines for Halloween activities that will help limit the spread of COVID-19

By Charlotte Beard Many people are wondering whether the earlier cancellation of 2020 events and summer holiday gatherings will mean a cancellation on Halloween festivities. The St. Louis County Department of Public Health (DPH) has taken a stance on safety as opposed to a complete cancellation on celebrating the holiday.

DPH is measuring activities under three safety zones: red (high-risk), yellow (caution), and green (safe). The department is requiring red zone events such as block parties, haunted houses, and any other large public events to submit a safety plan for prior approval. Those plans can be emailed to: business-covid@stlouisco.com.

“If the request is denied or if it is made too late for approval, the organizer cannot conduct the event,” stated Christopher Ave, Director of Communications for St. Louis County Department of Health.

Though a particular event may not fall under the general public – participants in festivities should be aware that DPH considers any indoor gatherings to be high-risk for the spread of coronavirus as well as traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating.

DPH considers socially distanced mask-wearing events low risk that include small group gatherings outdoors; outdoor mazes that prohibit screaming to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus; drive-through

trunk-or-treat events; and leaving individual portions of candy on a porch or table outside for visitors.

For people who may feel that wearing a safety mask is a downer, they can consider replacing their nose and mouth make-up area with a white cloth face mask/covering that depicts their artistry or purchase one from a popular store known for kids entertainment or an e-commerce known for handmade or vintage items and craft supplies. According to DPH, the safest Halloween festivities can take place at home. The department encourages families to decorate the exterior of their homes and transform the traditional trick-or-treating into a candy scavenger hunt (with fully wrapped candy). DPH also suggests giving a prize to the child who finds a special hidden treat. “(Do you) want to give out candy to the junior ghouls and goblins who stop by your house?” asks DPH. “Do it safely by dividing your loot into individually wrapped portions and laying them out on your porch, step, or outdoor table. That way kids won’t be digging through the same bag of candy (and potentially leaving germs). You can even buy or make a “candy chute” that you can use to drop wrapped candy or other safe treats into the bags of children who come by.”

DPH recognizes that some families have older children or teens who may want to be with their friends. Public Health suggests helping them organize a virtual Halloween party that includes a costume contest, using Zoom or a similar online social tool.

hosting virtual family get-togethers.

The health department advises that outdoor festivities are better for people who insist on an in-person gathering. However, fewer guests are recommended for these type gatherings along with safety masks and social distancing. DPH suggests that adults or teens who drive can arrange or attend a candy/goodies distribution drivein event to help maintain some social distance.

You should take one of these actions now There is too much going on in our community that is affecting our lives on a daily basis, and begging for our involvement on some level. As a matter of fact, there are certain issues that really need our involvement right now.

Some things that are going on around us are good, but some are very bad to us, for us, and for the community as a whole.

These bad issues are the ones that need our attention and involvement right now.

Though our communities have elected and appointed officials and other personnel to serve our many needs, there are additional roles for us to play in order for our neighborhoods to really grow in a positive way and prosper in general.

I’m sure that if we each took a notepad and made a list of things that would make our communities better, we could each develop a long list of items for improvement.

Often, I’m sure, we ask ourselves the question, “What can I do?” But then, after asking the question, we do nothing, until, perhaps, the negative situation arrives at our doorstep. What is needed these days is the desire to do something. Sometimes just a positive word can stop a situation from becoming negative and troublesome.

Sometimes, just our presence can ward off

an event from turning sour. Sometimes, a prayer is all that is needed. At any rate, we must take some kind of action. We must participate in the solutions. As the saying goes, “If you are not a part of the solution, then you are a part of the problem.”

Often, the most difficult thing to decide is what kind of action must I take? Some actions can be risky because they may expose us to too much involvement. Therefore, we often seek an involvement that is safe for us and makes us feel good about being involved at some level in solving the problem and participating in some degree to rectify an untenable situation.

This is one of the reasons why our ministry has developed the t-shirt giveaway program. It allows one to contribute to the solution of a major problem without getting too involved personally. Providing funds for the t-shirts with the slogan “I’M ALIVE. LET ME SURVIVE” allows for this much needed message to get out.

It also makes the recipients feel that someone really cares about them individually. Out of respect, it causes them to care about others and how they treat people.

Attitudes are changed and potentially negative behavior is replaced by constructive approaches to problem solving.

If enough of us take action now, we can influence the attitudes of those around us forever. We don’t have to wait for federal intervention or for somehow, the times to change. Delta Dental of Missouri launches virtual Land of Smiles program Delta Dental of Missouri’s Land of Smiles program, known for visiting hundreds of elementary schools throughout Missouri each year to teach grade-school children good dental health habits, has launched a new virtual experience in response to the continuing impact of COVID-19.

The engaging, age-appropriate online program features a vibrant 30-minute video with brand-new Land of Smiles superhero characters, which can be used for students in the classroom and for those involved in partial or full-time virtual learning. More than 60 Missouri schools – including 21 schools throughout the St. Louis area – have already signed up to take advantage of this free virtual program. Delta Dental of Missouri is continuing to take bookings for its program and encourages schools throughout the state to sign up to access it.

The virtual Land of Smiles experience follows dynamic superhero Captain Super Grin, as he defeats his nemesis, Caz Cavity, with a little help from his sidekicks, Terri Tooth Fairy and Toothpick. Throughout the adventure, students learn the importance of brushing teeth twice a day, flossing, eating healthy foods and visiting the dentist

regularly. Delta Dental of Missouri offers free “smile bags” to schools for students who participate in the program.

Each bag includes a toothbrush, toothpaste and dental floss to help students practice the good oral health habits that they learn. Each school is responsible for distributing the bags to participating students who attend school in person or virtually.

“When COVID hit, our team, like the rest of the nation, wasn’t sure what the 2020-2021 school year would look like, so we went to work to develop our virtual Land of Smiles program,” said Rob Goren, president and chief executive officer at Delta Dental of Missouri. “The new characters are a lot of fun and do a fantastic job of encouraging young students to take great care of their growing smiles. We’re pleased that the program has already received rave reviews from students and teachers alike.”

Becky Gretzmacher, LPN, the school nurse at Ste. Genevieve Elementary commented, “Our students loved

the show and the positive responses from the teachers were overwhelming. All were 100 percent engaged and retained very healthy, good information. For us, during these times, the virtual format was amazing.”

Delta Dental of Missouri will be following federal, state and county guidelines to determine when it is safe to resume its in-person Land of Smiles performances at schools. One million diapers has been collected by one small organization in just five years, to support the Saint Louis Crisis Nursery.

The Pooper Troopers began collecting diapers in 2015 and brought in 15,000 diapers that year. Each year through 2019, the number of diapers they collected doubled. This year, despite the pandemic, the Pooper Troopers collected 312,881 diapers, which took them over the 1,000,000 mark for a total of 1,035,969 in five years. The Saint Louis Crisis Nursery has used every single one either in the nurseries or giving them away to families that need help.

Erwin Emge, President and CEO of the Pooper Troopers, said, “With the support of our incredible sponsors KMOV, ALDI, Lou Fusz, Commercial Electronics, and Suburban Industrial Packaging, plus the generosity of thousands of St. Louisans, the Pooper Troopers have collected more diapers than we ever dreamed possible just a few years ago.”

Christian Hospital receives American Heart Association’s EMS Gold Plus Award for quality heart attack treatment Christian Hospital has received the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline EMS Gold Plus Award again this year for implementing quality improvement measures for the treatment of patients who experience severe heart attacks.

Every year, more than 250,000 people experience an ST elevation myocardial infarc-

tion (STEMI), the deadliest type of heart attack caused by a blockage of blood flow to the heart that requires timely treatment. To prevent death, it’s critical to restore blood flow as quickly as possible, either by mechanically opening the blocked vessel or by providing clot-busting medication.

Gateway Arch National Park increases visitor access to documentary movie experience Gateway Arch National Park is continuing to increase access to visitor activities by expanding visitor accessibility to the documentary movie experience.

Shown in the Gateway Arch’s Tucker Theater, “Monument to the Dream” is a 1967 Academy Award-nominated film that chronicles the construction of the Gateway Arch.

“We have made the necessary changes to the movie experience to ensure visitor and employee safety, and we are very eager to reintroduce this wonderful way to learn about the history of the Gateway Arch and give our visitors a more detailed look at how the monument was built,” said Gateway Arch National Park Superintendent Mike Ward.

This Maple Pecan Dessert Pancake from author and James Beard Award winner Ellie Krieger’s “Whole in One” is cooked in a skillet with a maple-sweetened egg batter and can be served warm or chilled. It feels like a homey, sweet pancake when served warm. Chilled, it becomes more of a flan-like tart with its custardy batter and caramelized sugars.

Ingredients:

Directions:

1 cup pecan pieces, divided

Preheat oven to 400 F. In small bowl of food processor, process 1/2 cup pecans until finely ground. Transfer to bowl. In processor, pulse remaining pecans to coarsely chop.

4 large eggs 1/3 cup whole milk 1/4 cup pure maple syrup 1/4 cup light brown sugar 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 pinch salt

In medium bowl, whisk eggs, milk, maple syrup, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt.

Stir in finely ground and coarsely chopped pecans.

1 tablespoon unsalted butter 1 teaspoon confectioners’ sugar

In 10-inch ovenproof skillet over mediumlow heat, heat butter. Add batter to pan.

Cook without stirring until edges begin to set, five minutes, then transfer to oven and bake until completely set and golden brown, 10 minutes. Pancake will puff up in oven then fall into place as it cools.

Allow to cool in pan 10 minutes then sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar and cut into eight wedges. Serve warm or chilled.

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work. Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

ernard Jeffrey McCullough, better known as Bernie Mac, was a talented comedian and actor who had his own self-titled show on the Fox network for five years. He also was a standout in films such as the baseball-themed “Mr. 3000” and the political comedy “Head of State” where he starred opposite Chris Rock. Mac even had a key role in the contemporary remake of “Ocean’s 11” and its sequels.

The prolific actor/comedian passed away in 2008 a few months prior to his 51st birthday.

In March 2005, I joined a group of other movie writers in a roundtable interview in support of “Guess Who,” a remake of the 1967 film “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” that starred Sidney Poitier and Spencer Tracy. In the new version, Mac plays Percy Jones, a loving father who has trouble understanding why his daughter Theresa (Zoe Saldana) wants to marry her white boyfriend Simon (Ashton Cooper).

After sitting down at the table, Mac shared details about his hectic work schedule and, at that time, a recent bout with pneumonia.

“I was shooting ‘Ocean’s 12’. I was shooting this movie (‘Guess Who’). I was shooting

“When I say something, I mean it. I hate to disappoint. I blame her for instilling that work ethic in me.”

Mac also shared the reason why he wanted to work on the remake of “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.”

Moore On Life Wow! It’s that scary time of year.

Time when witches and warlocks, freaks and fiends creep out from beneath the floorboards to scare the beejeebers out of people and then run for election.

Coincidence that the election falls at that very same time of year when your average monster or beast crawls out from their lair to spook the community for Halloween? Pshaw, hardly a coincidence!

But before the actual big election takes place there has to be a televised moment when the two candidates appear before the public and turn into crazed ogres. It’s right there in The Bill of Frights.

So yet another fearsome debate took place last week. It wasn’t as hair-raising as the first one.

Some might even call it civil. But soon enough the presenters got into a heated exchange. The opponent was accused of condescendingly smirking way too much while her side claimed that the current VP was totally mansplaining and manterrupting. In retaliation of that, the challenger tossed a ghastly fly into his hair. That will teach him, she sneered.

Civil? More like Civil War! Naturally, both sides claimed victory.

I’m totally into this political stuff this month.

It’s like watching a good scary movie and I was so looking forward to the next big debate. I prepared with popcorn, a warm blankie and an antacid milkshake. But it was not to be. Sadly,

we won’t be able to tune in to another fright night show.

The next presidential debate has been cancelled because of yet another fiendish mutation that has crawled out from the petri dish (feel free to insert your least favorite politician’s name here).

Ha! Now that was funny. But seriously, I’m actually referring to the evil Rona Virus, which no doubt, will be the most popular Halloween costume this year bumping out the giant roll of TP by a hair.

No debate because the president contracted the virus and now has an unfair advantage of being able to defensively sneeze on the opposition.

Darn. Now I’ll have to do something else to get my scare on. I know. I’ll turn on the news, but first I’m going to need an extra-large antacid milkshake.
