The 29th St. Louis International Film Festival will be held virtually this year and feature an international lineup of films sure to please any movie lover By Charlotte Beard Beginning Nov. 5, Cinema St. Louis (CSL) will host its 29th St. Louis International Film Festival. Like the nonprofit’s past three major events this year (QFest, St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase and Golden Anniversaries) this will be a virtual festival and will run through Nov. 22. Cliff Froehlich, Cinema St. Louis Executive Director hopes that the success CSL has experienced with their partner, Eventive, will yield the same success seen with their past three virtual festivals since the pandemic began. “Those festivals are much smaller than the St. Louis International Film Festival; the size and scope of the International Film Festival is vastly larger,” stated Froehlich. “That’s a challenge whether it is in-person or virtual,
but we are very grateful that we had the opportunity to have experience with the virtual platform that we’re using. (Eventive is) doing a lot of film festivals, (and) working with distributors and individual film makers. They are wonderful partners – they’re very professional. (Eventive) really pivoted quickly to being able to offer things in a virtual space. They were originally a ticketing outfit that evolved out of the Memphis indie film fest. They have been great in walking us through the previous festivals. So, we are pretty confident that everything is going to go reasonably smoothly.” Opening night for the festival will be free and feature the documentary short ‘8:46’ – which is a comedic performance by Dave
Chappelle who will also do a livestreamed conversation. Froehlich explains how SLIFF’s classification as an Oscar-qualifying event is opening the door for the conversation with the comedian. “We were playing a film called ‘9 to 5: The Story of a Movement’ by last year’s documentary feature Oscar winners Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert,” stated Froehlich. “They have knowledge of the festival – they’ve attended on their own in the past. So, we wanted that film. I had also watched ‘8:46.’ I am a Dave Chappelle fan. There were no credits on (the film), so I had no idea who made it (and) did not think anything more about it.
