Recreation Council of Greater St. Louis provides leisure activities for those with physical and mental disabilities

By Charlotte Beard Most people agree that their concern for finding something physically fun to do comes from trying to decide what they want to do.

However, there is a large population of people that finds what they want to do is only half the battle. People with physical or mental challenges must contend with accessibility for recreational and leisure activities.

The 2017 Annual Report for the Recreation

Council of Greater St. Louis shows that the agency served more than 4,900 individuals through the provision of various programs and services related to recreation and leisure needs.

The Recreation Council has a mission to promote, support and ensure that people with disabilities have opportunities in all recreation and leisure activities throughout

the Greater St. Louis area. It was formed in 1983 to support all age groups after recreation personnel and parents of people with disabilities made their desires known for one community resource for recreation opportunities.

Assess-4-All, LLC (www.access4-all.com), is the planner and host of the council’s Annual Evening of Entertainment: Spotlight on ABILITIES fundraiser. The sixth annual event, which raised $5,000, was in April 2018 and the next one will take place March 28, 2019.

The fundraiser provides 50 people each with a $100 voucher for camp or other recreational opportunity of their choice.

The talent show fundraiser normally features eight to 10 acts. Banister shared that participation is on a first-comefirst-serve basis for performance slots and that the event has never had an act try-out or participate that was deemed not worthy.

The governor reminded the audience that Missouri has the seventh most miles of highway to maintain and that Missouri ranks 49th in highway maintenance revenue with only Alaska receiving less. He stated that it is important that Proposition P passes for the sake of future generations of Missourians so that they can compete with our surrounding states for economic opportunities.

Florissant to request release of Block Grant funds The city of Florissant will request the releases of 2018 CDBG funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) on Nov. 5, following a two-week period in which the public will have the opportunity to comment on the slated use of the funds.

The Florissant 2018 CDBG Annual Action Plan identifies community needs and has been proposed for the following projects: • Home Improvement loans to eligible, low to moderate income households throughout Florissant.

• Home Improvement – Mechanical grants for the repair/replacement of HVAC and/or Water Heaters to eligible, low to moderate income households throughout Florissant.

• Project IMPACT program assistance with wheelchair ramps and materials and supplies for homes being rehabbed by volunteers for low to moderate income eligible or disabled residents.

• Mortgage, Rental, and Utility Assistance – This program provides mortgage, rental, and utility assistance program to serve low- to moderate-income households facing. emergency or severe temporary economic hardship and was awarded to CAASTLC in September 2016. This program is designed to help residents stay in their homes, whether they are home owners or renters.

• Program Administration – providing for the salary, benefits and training of the CDBG program administrators.

NCCU presents awards to community leaders North County Churches Uniting for Racial Harmony and Justice (NCCU) celebrated the 14th year of its Annual Awards Dinner by presenting awards to outstanding individuals and organizations that have made a difference in making North County and the community a better place to live, work, and raise families.

For the last fourteen years, it has selected seven outstanding individuals and organizations that have truly made a difference in the lives of others and in our community.

NCCU President Rance Thomas said, “For the first time, this year we presented eight awards as opposed to seven, because we had so many deserving organizations and individuals this year.”

The Outstanding Achievement Award was presented to Wesley Bell, Professor of Criminal Justice at St. Louis Community College at Florissant and Councilman in the city of Ferguson for his outstanding commitment to the community and for his victory in the St. Louis County Prosecutor’s race.

Operation Food Search raises more than $83,000 at golf tournament

Operation Food Search, a non-profit hunger relief organization, recently raised more than $83,000 at its 25th annual golf tournament. Proceeds will go toward ending childhood hunger and family food insecurity in the St. Louis bi-state region.

COMMUNITY VOICES Strong foundations, strong futures

By Dr. Joseph S. Davis A few years ago a student in the Ferguson-Florissant School District told one of her teachers, “I can’t afford the luxury of hope.” Can you imagine that? I can’t imagine what life must be like to go through the motions with no hope for anything more or anything better. In my role as superintendent and lead teacher in the district, I’m committed to preparing students for success in college and life. Our graduation rate has topped 85 percent, and we’re working toward 100 percent of our students graduating in four years, but it’s not enough to graduate every student on time. They must graduate prepared for success in college or whatever they choose. Whether they choose to be a plumber or an electrician, an engineer or a doctor, I want all students to get a great education and experience hope, and success in life.

It takes resources to provide a great education for all students regardless of where they live in our community. One of our board’s goals is to be fiscally efficient and to use our resources well. I know our taxpayers want to know they are getting the most for their money, and I am constantly seeking ways to direct more of our resources to the classroom. Even with the great financial support we receive from our community, we still have a limited supply of financial resources.

Over a year ago the Board of Education directed administration to examine our facilities, find inefficiencies and cut expenses while providing a great education for our students. District enrollment

peaked at about 20,000 students in the late 1960.

We currently have approximately 11,000 students in FFSD but still have most of the schools from fifty years ago. We are not being efficient with our facilities and our resources. Administration began the process of restructuring, examined building capacities, current enrollment, anticipated trends, grade organization, the bookends of early education and transforming high schools, and presented three options for moving forward.

We held several meetings in our schools and in the community. We even attended city council meetings sharing our thoughts and listening to stakeholder feedback. Our community members have a lot to say about our schools. Through this process I’ve seen how passionate students, parents and alumni are about their schools. We’ve wrestled with how to preserve memories while preparing students for the future. Through all of this work we’ve maintained our commitment to the “bookends” of early childhood education and high school transformation. We know the value of a strong foundation of educating even three and four year-olds, and we know we have to transform our high schools to prepare students for the 21st century and beyond.

As we worked through the process we realized the value of consultants who conduct facilities assessments for school districts on a daily basis.

Over the past several months MGT Consulting Group has conducted a thorough assessment of all

our facilities. MGT used several criteria to assess buildings including capacity, condition, technology readiness, and suitability for present and future learning.

Based on the results of the building assessment and the passionate feedback from the community, we revised the options presented back in the spring. The board has listened to community feedback across the district from south to north and has made its decision. I am confident that with the decision the board has made, we will continue to strive to build strong foundations and strong futures for all of our students.

Dr. Joseph S. Davis began serving the Ferguson-Florissant School District as Superintendent on July 1, 2015. Prior to that he served as Superintendent of Washington County schools in North Carolina and Deputy Chief of Schools for Chicago Public Schools. Dr. Davis has over 24 years of experience in education starting as a bus driver before teaching middle and high school mathematics and serving as Assistant Principal and Principal at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Dr. Davis and his family live in Ferguson and also serves as an adjunct professor at Washington University in St. Louis.

Hazelwood math teacher earns regional teacher of the year award Hazelwood West High School math teacher Scott Borcherding has been named a Regional Teacher of the Year by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

He is one of 10 St. Louis-area teachers to earn the recognition and one of only 32 statewide.

Borcherding was recognized at the Missouri State Teacher of the Year Awards Banquet Oct. 22 in Jefferson City.

“I have always believed that my successes have been based off relationships that I have created with students and colleagues,” Borcherding said. “This award has been a blessing to help me grow through opportunities that it has created throughout the past year.”

Borcherding has taught math at Hazelwood West High School since 2006, and is a Class of 2000 alumnus of the school.

He also is the senior class sponsor, varsity baseball coach, and girls tennis coach.

“Mr. Borcherding truly is a leader both for his students and Hazelwood West High School,” Superintendent Dr. Nettie Collins-Hart said. “He is a shining example of our highly-qualified staff setting high expectations and helping students reach those expectations. I am very proud of him and his hard work.”

Recipients are chosen based on their ability to foster excellence in education through improved student learning.

They also must play an active role in their school community and provide service and leadership, as well as be highly-respected by students, parents, colleagues, and their community.

Borcherding previously received the 2011-2012 Teacher of the Year Award from the Mathematics Educators of Greater St. Louis.

A beautiful fall morning was the backdrop for an event celebrating the next phase in the history of the Normandy Schools Collaborative. Students, families, local government officials, and community members gathered October 18 for a ceremonial groundbreaking at the site for the new Normandy Early Learning Center (ELC).

“This Early Learning Center is the result of serious debate about what Normandy’s ‘next’ should look like,” said Dr. Charles Pearson, Normandy Superintendent of Schools. “This Early Learning Center is both an addition to the Normandy Schools Collaborative as well as an ambitious addition to the quality of early learning programming in this region.”

The ELC, which will serve students in preschool, pre-kindergarten, and kindergarten in one state-of-the-art facility, is scheduled to open for the 2019-2020 school year. Research demonstrates that students who start their academic career in a strong early learning program are more

likely to perform on grade level and not need remedial support later in their schooling.

The ELC is being built on the site of the current Normandy 7th-8th Grade Center, which will close next school year. Normandy seventh and eighth graders will return to the elementary schools in fall 2019 as part of the district-wide reconfiguration as ‘elemiddle’ schools serving students in grades 1-8. The funds to construct the ELC were made possible by the voters’ approval of Proposition N in April 2017.

Rev. Cedric Portis Sr., president of Normandy’s Joint Executive Governing Board (JEGB), remarked that for students to compete and succeed on the global stage, there must be significant investment in early childhood education.

“Thank you voters, community, partners for your faith in this process of transformation for our community, district and children,” Portis said.

I married that redhead

By Russ Patton, owner of Byerly RV While I was getting educated at Washington University I met a young redhead who said her family had bought a Byerly trailer. It turned out to be an original that Walter Byerly built in 1954.

I had a 1951 Studebaker. I married that redhead and soon afterward Adrienne and I set out for a three-week adventure through the western states.

Our decision to begin heading south on I-44 would be regretted later. The trip was unforgettable, although sometimes challenging. In the desert we had to operate the heater to keep the car from overheating. Unfortunately for Adrienne, the Studebaker heater consists of a “radiator” below the front seats. She retreated to be back seat.

The trailer brakes were a lifesaver, but our venture into downtown San Francisco was harrowing without the trailer. I was constantly readjusting the brakes.

Highlights included watching hot air balloons practicing for the upcoming event in Albuquerque, New Mexico, driving the Pacific coast highway from San Clemente to San Francisco, enjoy-

ing beautiful Oak Creek Canyon, and visiting friends and relatives along the way.

We barely made it over the mountains before the October snows closed the passes. The ride home was harrowing. A blizzard followed us through most of Kansas, but we ploughed on because we didn’t want to stop in the middle of it.

Three things that your future boss won’t admit

By Robert Schrautemeier Unemployment is at an all-time low. This means that you are happy with your current job, right? Wrong. Unhappiness will persist in the job market, and potential job seekers are constantly looking for ways to edge out the competition.

While you are out looking for the greener grass, don’t forget the basics of interviewing.

1. First impressions are important, and your attire is important. Your nose ring might allow you to express yourself; good for you! But the person interviewing you only sees trouble. There are some noble hiring managers that can see past your wardrobe choices, but most will not. Remember that the person judging you is human, and she does not want to make a fool of herself by hiring the creepy new person. Throw this rule out the window if you are applying at some sort of hipster bar, or a record store.

2. Don’t be late! If you are a few minutes early, you are on-time. If you are on-time, you are late. This should really be the case even after you get hired, but alas: a lot of people feel like they are owed something for doing a tiny bit extra. By being prompt, you are sending a clear message that you can be counted on. This should be obvious, but in my experience, people do not pounce on this easy way to exhibit reliability. When someone shows up late to their interview, I immediately put them at the bottom of the list…barring a really good excuse.

3. Demonstrate knowledge of your future employer. When I initially call candidates for a position via telephone, the first thing that

I ask them after exchanging pleasantries is: “Do you need me to remind you about the position, or the company?” I actually understand when folks need a reminder.

Heck, a real go-getter may have applied for 20 positions this week. Do I understand a lack of knowledge? Yes. Do I care? No. I want my employees to show that they want the position. Otherwise, why should I be talking to this person that has no idea what we are trying to accomplish?

What’s the gist? Quit assuming that the hiring manager cares about your original personality.

They have an ideal candidate in mind, and while this person probably doesn’t exist, you need to put your best foot forward. Show the employer that you are the best choice to fill the position. This often means that you are the safe choice. “Quirky” and “risky” sound fun, but remember that you are just trying to get hired. Your awesome personality can come around in due time, but you need to get hired first.

Ingredients: 1/8 cup canola oil 1/4 cup cherry tomatoes, halved 1 medium onion, quartered 2 cups broccoli florets 1 lemon, half sliced and half juiced, divided kosher salt, to taste freshly ground pepper, to taste 1 pound white fish (such as snapper, grouper, flounder or barramundi) 4 tablespoons olive oil fresh rosemary sprigs (optional)

Directions: In pan over medium heat, heat canola oil about 1 minute.

Add tomatoes, onions and broccoli to pan; cook 5 minutes, uncovered.

Drizzle lemon juice over vegetables and season with salt and pepper, to taste.

Place fish on top of vegetables in center of pan and place two lemon slices on top of fish.

‘Mr. Smith Goes to Washington’ puts politics into perspective

It’s impossible to get relief from the electioneering surrounding the upcoming midterm elections. My mailbox is filled with flyers endorsing and/or condemning candidates and various ballot initiatives. After registering to vote, my email address was shared with various political activists. Each day, I must “unsubscribe” from email groups I never joined.

In the middle of this information overload, I went to see “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” one of director Frank Capra’s finest works.

Rereleased in theaters for two nights courtesy of Fathom Events and Turner Classic Movies, it tells the story of a young idealist who believes deeply in American values and the benefits of good honest government.

In arguably his finest performance, Jimmy Stewart plays Jefferson “Jeff ” Smith, a young man appointed to a vacant Senate seat by the governor. His appointment is really a ploy since political boss Jim Taylor (Edward Arnold) just wants a warm body to vote the way he wants. Taylor is shocked when the naïve Smith has ideas of his own and runs afoul of his money-making schemes.

Senator Joseph Paine, played by the wonderful Claude Rains, is a beloved politician that’s firmly in Jim Taylor’s pocket. Though he tries

Crossword: War Movies

‘Yeggs’ is a comic series about Robert and Bill, two rabbits who have opened their own egg franchise in the Midwest (St. Louis area). We follow their day to day lives, watching as they go about the hectic task of preparing for their one big day every year. Along the way they have adventures filled with fun, comic doings and pathos.

Moore On Life Have you heard? Toilets are exploding across the fruited planes and not because of the reason you would think – one too many bowls of Aunt Fiona’s magically fruited chili beans.

A major recall of a certain brand of toilet has been made because the things are actually blowing up after being used. The blast is caused by a buildup in the pressure system (which coincidentally also happens after eating Fiona’s chili).

But this isn’t just a random occurrence; there have been more than 1,400 reports and 1.4 million of the potties have been recalled. Serious stuff.

They have caused 23 injuries including a foot surgery (this is a stern reminder of why washing one’s feet in the bowl is never a good idea!)

So there’s just one more thing to cause me first world anxiety and depression. I’m miserable enough when I don’t find fruit in the bottom of my yogurt. Now I’m faced with the possibility that at any moment my nether regions could be blown apart while attending to my business?! This is too much.

And it’s not just the porcelain thrones that are blowing up. A whopping $710,000 in additional property damages has been associated with the explosions. Holy eruptions, I can only envision my roof flying off to Kansas and my cats becoming airborne.

We typically don’t expect this kind of occurrence on dry ground, but up in an airplane at 30,000 feet; absolutely! Pottying in one of those tiny, pocket-sized closets is absolutely terrifying!

The flusher is a dangerous super-sonic vacuum!

Many an unwary passenger has flushed the turbo toi one too many times only to have the flight pattern altered.

On the bright side, my plane once got an extra boost of velocity on one of those multiple flushes and ended up landing a half hour earlier than scheduled.

But beware; no literally…your butt must beware! Do not make the mistake of remaining seated when you engage the airplane toilet flusher. You will either end up with a bum hickey the size of Rhode Island, or you’ll be sucked down into the cargo luggage department.

There you will be scrunched up next to those whose carry-ons didn’t fit into the above storage compartment or be situated next to the woman who stubbornly refused to be separated from her emotional support camel…a spitting camel no less.

Use caution folks. Never in our lifetime has using the facilities been such a…bummer!
