By Charlotte Beard This year’s Veterans’ Day Parade in Florissant will include the honoring of one of its citizens as 2019 Veteran of the Year. Lewis G. Bouwman, II is receiving the honor on Sunday, Nov. 10 at the ceremony following the parade at 1 p.m. The ceremony will be at the VFW located at 410 Rue Saint Francois Street.

Bouwman, native of Granite City, Illinois, moved to Florissant in 1989 to live with his aunt and uncle after his mother’s death. He began his military career with the Army in 1994 and was stationed at Fort Campbell in Kentucky. He was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division as an Infantryman with the 327th Infantry Regiment.

“When I was a kid I was (part of) the Boy Scouts,” stated Bouwman, “and when I got my Eagle Scout (badge) I wrote a paper saying what I planned to do in the next 10 years. One of those (plans) was to go in the military.”

Bouwman comes from a line of veterans. He shared that he had an uncle that served during the Vietnam War and both his grandfathers served during World War II. Bouwman embarked on a college degree prior to joining the military but made a turn to follow in the footsteps of the men before him when he began to feel that college was not the path for him.

“After being on active duty I came home; I was going to give college another shot,” stated Bouwman. “I believe in higher education; I believe it is for some people. I had (gained) some discipline that I didn’t have earlier, so I decided I was going to go back to school. (However), when I got out (of the military) I found that I was missing the uniform. I was missing the early morning physical training. I was missing going to the range. I was missing being a soldier. So, that

is why I (joined) the reserves; I could finish up school and then go part time. I could still get in uniform, but I didn’t have to go all the way back to active duty.”

Bouwman became a Military Police (MP) Officer in 1997 with the National Guard and a drill instructor with the 95th Division.

2019 Florissant Old Town Christmas House Tour announced

A small cast plays many roles in different eras in ‘The Dining Room’

Tickets $20 for adults and $5 for Children under 18 are now on sale for the 2019 Old Town Christmas House Tour. This year 14 locations, are featured, some of which have not been available in years past.

The Historic House Tour scheduled for 1 – 6 p.m. on Dec. 1 is a wonderful way to both explore the rich history of the Florissant area and get into the holiday spirit as many homes will be decorated for the coming season.

Fourth annual gala raises nearly $165,000 for pediatric cancer research The Kids Shouldn’t Have Cancer Foundation in Memory of Jonny Wade raised nearly $165,000 for pediatric cancer research at its fourth annual gala to support the foundation’s mission to conquer pediatric cancer through research and advocacy.

The Kids Shouldn’t Have Cancer Foundation is a nonprofit organization created in memory of eight-year-old Jonny Wade who passed away on Dec. 24, 2015 after a year-long battle with cancer. Despite his circumstances, Jonny believed he could – and should – make a difference for other children affected by cancer. His wish that no kid should have cancer inspired his parents Kimberly and Jon Wade to establish the foundation.

“We are beyond humbled and thankful for the amazing support we receive from the St. Louis area for making Jonny’s wish their own,” said foundation founder Kimberly Wade. “These funds will continue my son’s legacy and raise awareness about the lack of funding for pediatric cancer. We will put these funds directly into the hands of those working hard to make a difference and end this terrible disease.”

Over the past four years, the foundation has raised over $1.9 million for pediatric cancer research, with a major fundraising source being the annual Gala in St. Louis.

Every day, the parents of approximately 43 children

will hear, “Your child has cancer” – and for Kimberly and Jon Wade, that day came on Dec. 26, 2014. Despite pediatric cancer being the leading cause of disease- related death for kids under 15 in the U.S., only four percent of National Cancer Institute funding is dedicated to pediatric cancer research.

The Kids Shouldn’t Have Cancer Foundation is demanding action and effecting change for the thousands of children that are diagnosed with cancer each year.

This year, the foundation honored five children who have been impacted by cancer. Honorees for the fourth annual gala include Jonny Wade, Reagan Kadell, Grant Weiss, Leo Fleming and Alec Ingram.

Florissant resident celebrates 101st birthday with Stanley Cup Caroline Laska recently celebrated her 101st birthday and is a huge sports fan. She has rooted for the St. Louis Blues since the beginning in 1967 and knew that they would eventually win the Stanley Cup. She is very honored to have been able to touch the Cup and have her picture taken with it. She has prayed for this day and knows that they can do it again.

She is also a big baseball fan starting with the St. Louis Browns when she was 13 years old, then cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals.

She has two children, five grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and one great, great grandson.

Laska feels her longevity is due to eating healthy, exercising daily and praying daily that the Lord blesses her with another day.

She lives by the words, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

Candidates can now file for city of Florissant elections on April 7, 2020 Those interested in filing for nomination for Florissant City Council positions in Ward 2,4,6 and 8 of the city of Florissant for the election to be held on April 7, 2020 will soon be eligible to do so.

Candidates may obtain the necessary forms from the city clerk on or after Jan. 7, 2020 at the Florissant City Hall at 955 rue St. Francois, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Candidates for city council must be registered voters of the city and shall have been a resident of the ward for at least one year immediately prior to the date of the election.

City council candidates must obtain 200 signatures of registered voters in the ward where the petition is being filed. Signatures cannot be obtained prior to opening day of filing and must be submitted on the forms provided.

The petitions and affidavit must be returned to the city clerk no earlier than Jan. 7, 2020 and no later than 5 p.m. on Jan. 21, 2020. The affidavit

that accompanies the petitions must be signed by the candidate for city council and notarized.

The affidavit will be signed and the time and date recorded by the city clerk. The petitions must be signed by the candidate obtaining the signatures, but need not be notarized.

The city clerk, upon being informed by the St. Louis County Board of Election Commissioners that the nominating petitions filed by a candidate are sufficient or not sufficient, shall notify the candidate immediately upon receipt of the same. If a petition is found insufficient, the city clerk shall return it to the person filing it with a statement certifying wherein the petition is insufficient. Within the regular filing time for filing petitions, new or supplemental petitions may be filed for the same candidate.

Names will appear on the ballot in the order of completed filing.

Study identifies the economic impact of public transit services in Missouri Citizens for Modern Transit reported the findings of a six-month study designed to quantify the economic impact of public transit services in the state of Missouri, to area leaders at its quarterly “Talking Transit “ event, held last month at the St. Louis Regional Chamber Collaboration Center.

Highlights, including the fact that the direct and indirect impact of public transit in Missouri this year exceeds $3.67 billion, were reported before the conversation switched gears to underscore the distinct lack of state funding for transit in Missouri despite its economic return.

The first-of-its-kind study, commissioned in partnership with the Missouri Public Transit Association and AARP in St. Louis, was led by Robert M. Lewis, FAICP, CEcD, an independent consultant and assistant professor of Urban Planning & Development at Saint Louis University. He revealed the following findings from the “2019 Economic Impact of Public Transit Services in the State of Missouri” study: • There is a total of 34 transit providers in the Missouri. They collectively spend $675 million each year on operations, capital improvements and labor compensation for the 4,500 individuals who are employed at an average salary of $64,200.

• Missouri public transit providers provide an annual average of 60.1 million rides, which is equivalent to 9.8 rides per year, per Missouri resident. In conjunction with these trips, transit riders are spending $600 million on goods and services. This translates into a direct economic impact of $1.28 billion each year in Missouri.

• The direct spending triggers another $2.4 billion in statewide economic activity, including $1.03 billion in added household earnings for Missourians. These indirect, or multiplier effects, further support another 24,680 jobs in the state that pay an average of $30,200 per year. Because of all the economic activity and job creation triggered by transit operations and riders, the State of Missouri collects an estimated $48.8 million in taxes per year.

• The direct and indirect economic output supported by public transit’s annual operations in 2019 exceeds $3.67 billion in Missouri. This includes $2.65 billion in the St. Louis Metro Area, $786.4 million in the Kansas City Metro Area and $251.9 million throughout the rest of the state.

The study also confirmed that Missouri transit providers serve every county in the state. The highest density of transit utilization is found in the urban areas of St. Louis and Kansas City, but there is access to public transportation in all rural areas and small towns. It also highlighted a distinct lack of support from the state when it comes to transit funding – pointing to Bi-State Development as a local example. Bi-State Development operates the MetroBus and MetroLink in St. Louis. It has a $2.68 billion impact on the region and supports 21,080 jobs. Yet, it received

less than $1 million from the state of Missouri for its FY2017 budget of $303 million. The remainder came from federal funding and local sources.

“This pinch is not limited to St. Louis – it is being felt across the state as Missouri currently allocates $1.75 million per year for public transit, a total that must be divided among all 34 transit providers,” commented Lewis during his presentation. “This amounts to 34 cents per Missouri resident, which is similar to Kentucky, but less than a third of Arkansas and one quarter of Oklahoma, and is almost insignificant when compared to Illinois. Of nine bordering states, Missouri has the 8th largest GDP and the slowest growing GDP since the Great Recession.”

After Lewis reported his findings, a panel of local stakeholders weighed in on the outcomes and discussed how the information can be utilized to build the case for more state and federal funding for transit.

Missouri Senator Jamila Nasheed, representing the 5th district, was among the panelists. She applauded Citizens for Modern Transit for taking the lead on this very important and thorough study.

“I’ve learned a lot today,” stated Nasheed. “The state has a budget of approximately $30 billion.

How do you cultivate a transit system with only $1.75 million? And that’s not $1.75 million for one transit provider. That number is divided by 34. It is appalling to me. We have some work to do. We have to be able to go to up there (Jefferson City) and say enough is enough – put the money where it matters. Because at the end of the day, this economic impact report shows how much transit is generating for the state of Missouri.”

“The hole that exists in each transit providers’ budget is funding from the state of Missouri – it is missing from the equation,” added Kimberly Cella, executive director of both Citizens for Modern Transit and the Missouri Public Transit Association. “That is why we did this study. State funding is at a record low. Missouri ranks 47th in the country for state funding for transit. Some of our transit providers are getting as little as $5,000 from the state. We’ve got to be bold. The state has to do better. Whether you ride transit or not, Missouri’s investment in transit is key to the economic viability of this state.”

Red Cross delivers help and hope following disasters

By Mary Jane Thomsen As disasters struck across the Greater St. Louis area and surrounding this past summer, local American Red Cross volunteers and staff jumped into action to help those devastated by the flood waters that affected homes throughout the area.

With the increasing number of disasters, the Red Cross relies heavily on its volunteers and donors to help carry out its mission and ensure that those who need help, receive it. The mission of the Red Cross is to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.

More than 90 percent of the American Red Cross workforce is volunteers. Last year, across the nation, nearly 372,000 individuals volunteered their time to support the Red Cross – an increase over previous years largely resulting from the frequency and severity of large scale disasters and the many communities affected.

During the local flooding, Red Cross teams opened shelters to provide those affected with a warm meal and a place to sleep. Shelters were kept open as long as there was a need. Red Cross disaster assessment teams traveled through the communities to document the damages to determine the need for assistance and assess the recovery steps needed.

Responding to the needs of the community following a disaster is truly a team effort that starts with volunteers and donors who ensure the Red Cross has the resources for its mission, and it continues with many communi-

ty partners such as local and state government, other non-profits including United Way and religious organizations. The Red Cross offers immediate shelter needs and support, while other partner organizations step in to provide long-term housing assistance, clothing, or other items to help residents going into the weeks and months after the disasters.

The Greater St. Louis chapter is part of a larger region encompassing Missouri and Arkansas. The MOAR region led the country with more than 3,300 home fire responses last year, came in second in the country in the number of youth reached through the Pillowcase Program (i.e. more than 10,000 kids were trained in preparedness), and the region came in third in the country with more than 15,000 smoke alarms installed in homes. Also, in the Missouri-Arkansas region, volunteers contributed nearly 224,000 hours which is the equivalent of almost $5.7 million dollars.

In addition, Bouwman completed Air Assault School and Jungle Warfare School at Fort Sherman in Panama where he earned an Expert Infantry Badge. He was part of the mission in 1999 when the Panama Canal was turned back over to the Panamanian government.

Bouwman was deployed in 2007 to Afghanistan for Operation Enduring Freedom. He was a Squad Leader and Convoy Commander with over 200 combat missions.

“We were tasked out to the Provincial Reconstruction Team from the Bagram Military Base,” Bouwman

stated of his time in Afghanistan. “We worked with civil affairs, the Korean Army, and civilian contractors. We took those units out into the country; they gave money to the people to build schools, roads, and hospitals. We (transported) medics; there were medical days to inoculate people. Our job was just to (transport) people to their mission and act without losing any (lives), which we did successfully.”

Bouwman has received numerous awards including Army Commendation Medals and the Combat Action Badge.

He retired from military service in 2010. According to Bouwman, it was at this time that he began working with the narcotics division under the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for four years. Ultimately, Bouwman always wanted to become a police officer.

After his service with the DEA he was transferred to the St. Louis County Special Response Unit where he

is an investigator and a member of the Crisis Negotiation Team.

Having been a Military Police Officer, when asked the difference between military and civilian law enforcement, Bowman stated, “Civilian police have broader laws to deal with; the military is very exacting. While under military installation you don’t have privacy. They can search you any time they want. It’s very by-the-book. In the civilian world there is interpretation of law – you don’t have that in the military.

It is very different out here. It wasn’t hard making the adjustment. I just (must) keep in mind that going through the police academy is like getting a master’s degree in six months. It’s really tough – because of all the laws and all the changing laws. There are so many facets to civilian law enforcement. I consider the academy 10 times harder than anything I ever did in the military. But I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

The Veterans’ Day Parade will commence at Bangert Park and precede north on Florissant Road. It will end at the VFW where the ceremony will take place.

Indoor soccer Ambush entertains fans next week at Fanfest The St. Louis Ambush plays in the South Central division of the Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) with home games at the Family Arena.

Ahead of the season, the Ambush will treat fans to their annual free Fanfest, including an exhibition game against the Dallas Sidekicks, on Nov. 16. Fanfest activities commence at 4:30 p.m. with the exhibition game slated for 7:05 p.m.

The home season opener will begin Nov. 29 against the Milwaukee Wave at 7:05 p.m.

The Ambush finished third in their division last year as the Wave finished first. * And it begins Ambush signs veteran player The St. Louis soccer club has obtained veteran player Tony Walls from the Ontario Fury via trade for future considerations.

The 2019-2020 season will be Walls’ seventh in professional indoor soccer. In addition to last season with Ontario, Tony has played with the Milwaukee Wave (2013-16) and Cedar Rapids Rampage (2016-18). Walls also had stints with outdoor teams the Michigan Bucks (2011), Chicago Fire (2012), Rochester Rhinos (201416) and the Chattanooga Red Wolves (2019).

Local fans will remember him from his stint with St. Louis FC (2017-18).

The squad ended with a 5-11-1 record with a 5-9-1 statistic in league play.

Both Triton goals came in the second half as they rallied back for the victory after the Hawks scored with 15 seconds remaining in the first half.

Grass-Fed Leg of Lamb Prep time: 10 minutes | Cook time: 2 hours, 45 minutes | Servings: 8 I ngredients: Lamb: 4 1/2-5 1/2 pounds leg of lamb, at room temperature 1 3/4 ounces butter, softened 3 cloves garlic, crushed 1 teaspoon roughly chopped thyme leaves salt, to taste ground black pepper, to taste 1-2 handfuls thyme sprigs 1 onion, sliced 1/2 cup olive oil

Meat Sauce: 1 cup beef stock 3/4 cup creme fraiche or sour cream lemon zest, finely grated 1 tablespoon wine vinegar 1 bay leaf salt, to taste sauteed mushrooms (optional) sauteed green beans (optional) steamed carrots and snap peas (optional)

Directions:

Skim fat off roasting juices. Add beef stock to remaining juices and bring to boil.

Heat oven to 320 F. To prepare lamb: Using sharp knife, make 4-5 shallow slits in lamb. In bowl, mix butter, garlic and chopped thyme. Coat butter mixture in slits and sprinkle lamb with salt and pepper, to taste.

Place thyme sprigs and sliced onion in base of roasting tin and place lamb on top. Drizzle olive oil over lamb. Roast 2 hours, 45 minutes.

To make meat sauce: Remove lamb from oven 30 minutes before end of cooking time. Place lamb on board then tip juices into saucepan.

Place lamb back in roasting tin and return to oven.

Reduce heat and add creme fraiche or sour cream, lemon zest, vinegar and bay leaf. Simmer until sauce reduces some. Season with salt, to taste, to counteract acidity.

Remove lamb from oven and rest covered loosely with foil and tea towel 10 minutes before carving.

Strain sauce into bowl or gravy boat and serve hot with lamb and sauteed mushrooms, green beans or steamed carrots and snap peas, if desired.

Thanksgiving weekend dishes up some anticipated movies

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work. Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

2019 has already witnessed such box office successes as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Avengers Endgame,” “Captain Marvel” and “Spider-Man: Far from Home.” Disney’s live action adaptations of “Lion King” and “Aladdin” and the fourth installment of “Toy Story” brought families and fans to theaters. Still holding court at the multiplex, Warner Brothers’ “Joker” has become a major success story for the studio and actor Joaquin Phoenix.

Though this year has already been exciting for movie fans, the days leading up to the Thanksgiving holiday offer even more anticipated films. “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” for instance, features Tom Hanks as Fred Rogers, one of the most beloved children’s television hosts ever. The film focuses on the relationship between Rogers and a cynical journalist named Tom Junod, who is tasked with writing a profile of the host for “Esquire.”

Based on the trailers, Hanks performance will reawaken everyone’s love for Fred Rogers. There’s a line in the story where Lloyd Vogel, the journalist character based on Junod, tells his wife about his upcoming interview. She echoes the sentiments of

“Ford v Ferrari” will heat up the screen in a real-life tale of rivalry and racing. The story is set against the backdrop of “24 Hours of Le Mans,” a long-standing endurance race that takes place near the town of Le Mans, France. Moore On Life That quirky little holiday has come again. The one which I get ignored, taken for granted and am expected to slave away unappreciated. No, it’s not, I’m An Entitled Teenager Day. It’s far worse. It’s National Cat Day. Each year I believe the treatment from my two over-indulged tyrants in fur suits will improve. So I go ahead and spoil them foolishly.

I started the morning by whipping up some red snapper and tuna smoothies.

I approached the skinny one who was perched upon his fluffy pillow tucked next to the roaring fireplace.

“Here you go my precious whiskered one.”

He accepted my humble offering then said, “Needs more whipped topping! What?! Is there a famine? Are we living in dictator-ruled North Korea now?”

Wow. I was really impressed that my cat knew so much about world affairs; well actually he just hissed then tipped over his cup onto the clean carpet, but his meaning came through loud and clear.

I knocked on the door of the fat one’s bedroom before entering (he hates unannounced visitors).

He replied in a grouchy voice, “Egads! It’s only 9 ‘o’ clock. What’s the meaning of disturbing me at such an unreasonable hour?”

“It’s your special day,” I said as I presented him with his tasty breakfast concoction.

He took a sip.

“Oh my. This beverage is heavy on the tuna; a bit overpowering and clogging my delicate senses.”

He waved it away.

Actually he just growled and bit me, but his meaning came through loud and clear.

I gathered them together for a meeting in the living room.

“Okay Kitty Boys.

It’s National Cat Day and I’m here to serve you. Fire away.”

The skinny one eyed me suspiciously then said, “For starters, you may henceforward address me as His Royal Highness Grand Emperor of all which rises above the lowly barking dogs, but no more, Kitty Boy.” The chunk chimed in, “Well, I’d like not to be disturbed before lunchtime and then only to be served an array of cream cheese on crackers with a side of fresh goldfish.”

I glanced out the window. Our neighbor’s lowly barking dogs were roaming around marking up their territories in our backyard. I tossed out King Tut and his flabby friend. I’ll let them back in when they’ve decided not to act like entitled teenagers.

Cindy Moore is the mother of three superlative kids, servant of two self-indulgent felines and wife to one nifty husband. Her ficticious occupation? Archeological Humorist: someone who unearths absurdity and hilarity in strange and unusual places including public restrooms, the lint filter, and church meetings.
