By Charlotte Beard On Dec. 14, more than 200 St. Louis Promise Zone students enjoyed a private lunch, mini-concert and conversation with three-time Grammy award-winning jazz artist Robert Glasper at Jazz St. Louis on Washington Avenue. The NAACP - St. Louis County Branch, Emerson, and the St. Louis Economic Development Partnership are responsible for helping make the event possible.

“We know that arts are important to the overall academic success and career pathway planning for young people,” said Erica

Henderson Executive Director of the St. Louis Promise Zone. “This event is part of our youth engagement strategy to increase arts and literacy access throughout the zone.”

The St. Louis Promise Zone comprises school districts in the areas of: Pagedale, Pine Lawn, Jennings, Normandy, Ferguson, Berkeley and Hazelwood.

Glasper, a native of Houston, Texas, shared with students the extensiveness of his tours which are not limited to Asia and Europe, and the role that many former St. Louisans, who are now musicians or who have become

his manager, now have in what he does.

“There is a lot of great music and great musicians that come from this area in case you all didn’t know,” he said.

The pianist, who has worked with a variety of artists such as Carly Simon, was able to musically relate to the youth by focusing on some of his work that intersects with today’s generation of music.

One student asked what it was like to work with rapper Kendrick Lamar, 2018 Pulitzer Prize winner.

“He has a record called ‘To Pimp a Butterfly,’” stated Glasper. “I worked on that record; I’m on nine songs on that record. It was amazing working with Kendrick. He’s a really cool, down-to-earth person. I like working with people who are good people.

Sometimes you can be really good at something and not a good person. And then nobody wants to work with you because you’re not a good person. So, if you can be a good person and be really good at something that’s the best combination you can ever have.”

One of the other questions asked by a student was in reference to classes in which he enrolled in school to get to where he is today.

“I went to a performing arts high school,” stated Glasper, “like a magnet high school which focuses on dance, visual art, music, singing… I actually went to school with Beyonce; when I was a senior in high school Beyonce was a freshman.”

He went on to share that LeToya Luckett, one of the original Destiny’s Child members, is his cousin.

“I took a lot of theory courses – music theory classes – and jazz band classes. School had a big hand in what I am doing for sure,” he said.

Glasper and members of his music trio also shared various disciplines and techniques with the students not limited to how to practice music and what it means to improvise in music.

Students also had the opportunity to experience the talent of a local visual artist.

Cbabi (pronounced Kuh-bob-bi) Bayoc is the South St. Louis artist responsible for the artwork on the T-shirts students received and presented to Glasper to commemorate the event. Bayoc became involved in the event when Henderson asked if he would be interested in doing a T-shirt design for the event.

“I wanted to do something fun for the kids and especially for those who might for the first time be introduced to who (Glasper) was,” Bayoc said of the design. “When I looked at some videos it seemed a lot of the drummers used the same

cymbal that had holes in it. I think the percussion on his songs really play a key role in his music, so I put the cymbal around his neck. I also have his hand above his head to think of him as a composer; he is holding a (baton). I have the hand playing the piano and it has multiple fingers just to play on the fact that one – it’s a painting and two – just the sound…what he can do with his hands…seems like his hands are unreal. So, he has more fingers than normal. Then I have part of a bass drum just to give the guy jazz. You have a high-rise to give a feel of him (being) from the city like most of the kids (who would) see him.”

Bayoc went on to share that the design against the green in the background was an element he took from a design shown in the YouTube music video of Robert Glasper with Erykah Badu for the song “Maiysha (So Long)” to add a bit of funk.

Holiday party, night on the town - you’re rocking the perfect outfit and look killer in your heels but by the end of the night you’re feeling like hell on heels and the pain doesn’t stop there. The next morning you’re still hobbling around because your feet, legs, and back hurt!

Now you now have a whole closet of shoes you’re afraid to wear because of the pain they might cause. Welcome to the high heel hangover! I’ve got three remedies you can use at home so when you think about that party, it’ll be great memories and not how your feet hurt afterward.

After the party three main things happen to your feet from your high heels: 1. Your toes get jammed into a bent-up angle.

2. Your calves shorten and tighten.

3. Your arches in your feet flatten.

Here’s how to help your feet – and everything above them – feel better: 1. Relax your toes – kick your shoes off.

Sit down and hold one foot. Place the pad of one thumb on the ball of your foot, just below your big toe. Use the other hand to gently and slowly guide your big toe down (the opposite of the angle that your heels hold your toes in). Then gently release your big toe.

Repeat with each toe.

2. Ease your calves – stand facing a wall, with your hands on it to steady yourself (shoes off so you don’t fall over).

Step straight backwards with one foot, pressing your heel toward the floor to create a gentle calf stretch. It’s ok if your heel doesn’t touch the floor. Hold your stretch for two or three deep breaths, then gently release, bring your foot back underneath you, and repeat for your other calf.

3. Restore your arch – my favorite but I’ve run out of time so…

Daughters of Charity supports Crisis Nursery Latino Outreach Program with $42,000 grant

Ferguson Youth Initiative benefit from substantial donation

As the result of a very generous grant from the Daughters of Charity Foundation of St. Louis, the Saint Louis Crisis Nursery will be able to assist over 210 Spanish-speaking parents and children in the St. Louis area who are struggling with poverty, domestic violence and mental health issues.

The grant of $42,794 will be used by the Crisis Nursery’s Latino Outreach Program, located in SSM St. Mary’s Hospital, to provide individuals with counseling sessions, therapy groups and individual crisis intervention. The funds will also ensure over 140 children will remain safe and have basic needs met.

“Latino immigrants are one of the most underserved populations in St. Louis; yet, thanks to our partnership with Daughters of Charity Foundation of St. Louis, the Latino Outreach Program continues to change this narrative,” said Alejandra Martinez, Latino Program Counselor for the Crisis Nursery. “With their support, we are able to offer individual crisis intervention and assistance with families’ basic needs. In his continued efforts to promote the betterment of his district and to raise awareness for the improvement of Ferguson, state Rep. Courtney Allen Curtis was encouraged to learn about the beneficial impact of a donation made to the Ferguson Youth Initiative (FYI).

Working to serve the youth of the Ferguson Community, FYI received a $25,000 donation from donor David Humphreys to further its efforts to empower teens to become productive, positive and contributing members of the community.

Aaron Harris, who serves as the executive Director of the Ferguson Youth Initiative, said the donation has allowed the organization to “effectively raise awareness about our programming to more youth in the community, offer industry-recognized training and credentials throughout ‘Next Steps’ job readiness program, and expand all of FYI’s programming reach in more areas of St. Louis County.”

Harris added that continued support of FYI will allow the organization to sustain its reach and make a larger impact.

Curtis (D-Ferguson), commented, “These types of initiatives aiming to improve the environment for Ferguson youth are essential to improving our community. True change can come from the people in the community and I am hopeful that leadership in the community and state government begins to take note of improvements in the area. These funds will allow the initiative to not only lead productive conversations, but also implement solutions to the ongoing concerns facing Ferguson youth.”

By Pat Volkmann On Dec. 1, members of Julia Dent Grant Tent # 16, Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865 held their December meeting/ Christmas party at White Haven. A short meeting was held and then everyone gathered to enjoy the delicious foods provided by the members.

Members also brought items to be donated to the Fisher House.

Member Pat Volkmann, PDP brought three quilts to give to Sharon Birt Michael, SVP to be given to the veterans’ home where she volunteers. We Care Ladies Group of Maryland Heights Church of Christ at 107 Midland Avenue made the quilts. The quilt tops were sewn by Faye Kerper, who is a long-standing member of the church.

Caring for caregivers: How to prevent caregiver burnout While caring for an older family member – whether it be a spouse, parent or grandparent – can be a rewarding experience, it can also be a difficult and overwhelming task. This is especially true if your loved one lives with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia-related illnesses.

Whether it’s out of love or obligation, caring for a chronically ill or disabled family member (and potentially his or her financial and legal interests) can come at the expense of the caregiver’s quality of life. In addition to maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle outside of caregiving re-

sponsibilities, it is important for those caring for a loved one to learn ways to avoid health hazards and stay well-informed of any changes in their loved one’s condition. Add work and children to care for to the equation and it’s a formula that can lead to stress, exhaustion and even potential health issues.

The additional duties often required to provide care for a loved one can lead to physical or emotional fatigue, often referred to as “caregiver burnout.” If you’re caring for an older adult, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America recommends these

tips to help manage stress before caregiving leads to burnout.

Know the signs of burnout. By the time many caregivers suspect signs of burnout, they’re likely already suffering symptoms related to their responsibilities. Being aware of some of the warning signs can help caregivers properly manage stress and protect themselves. Warning signs include: • Overwhelming fatigue or lack of energy • Experiencing sleep issues • Significant changes in eating habits or weight • Losing interest in activities you once enjoyed • Neglecting personal physical and emotional needs • Becoming unusually impatient, irritable or argumentative • Having anxiety about the future or a feeling of hopelessness • Suffering from headaches, stomachaches or other physical ailments • Experiencing depression or mood swings • Having difficulty coping with everyday tasks • Lower resistance to illnesses

Educate yourself about the disease. It’s likely the loved one you care for has several health problems, takes multiple medications and sees multiple health care providers to manage his or her conditions. As a first step in learning more about Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia-related illnesses, visit alzfdn.org or nia.nih.gov/alzheimers for information. Support groups, educational workshops, community resources and professionals can also help increase your understanding of the disease and what to expect so you can be a better-informed and prepared caregiver.

Be prepared for important decisions. Take care of financial, legal and long-term care planning issues early on to help reduce stress later. Try to involve the individual in decision-making if he or she is capable, and consider personal wishes regarding future care and end-oflife issues.

skills for any caregiver include communication, understanding safety considerations and behaviors, and managing activities of daily living such as bathing, toileting and dressing. Some organizations and local hospitals may even offer classes specific to your loved one’s disease that can aid you in the process.

Develop empathy. Try to understand what it is like to be a person living with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Put yourself in the affected person’s shoes while also recognizing your own losses. Manage your expectations of your loved one and remain patient.

Ask for help when you need it. Reach out to medical and mental health professionals as well as family and friends. They can assist you when things get tough. In addition, there are typically programs, agencies and organizations in your community that can help manage the challenges of caring for older parents, grandparents, spouses and other older adults.

Advocate for and connect with your loved one. Take an active role in the individual’s medical care. Get to know the care team, ask questions, express concerns and discuss treatment options. Also remember to connect on a personal level through kindness, humor and creativity, which are essential parts of caregiving and can help reduce stress.

Think positive. Focus on the capabilities and strengths that are still intact and enjoy your relationship with your loved one while you are still together. Look for ways to include him or her in your daily routines and gatherings to make as many memories as possible.

MDC now stocking rainbow trout in St. Louis area lakes During winter months, the metro St. Louis area is a great place to fish for rainbow trout, thanks to the MDC’s winter trout program.

Winter trout season for MDC’s St. Louis Urban Fishing Program started in November.

That’s good news for trout chasers who now need travel only minutes to pursue their passion rather than hours.

“The whole goal of the program is to bring fish to the people, so they don’t have to drive to an Ozark trout stream or trout park,” said Meneau.

From November through February, MDC stocks rainbow trout in 12 St. Louis City and County lakes, as well as in five lakes at the MDC August A. Busch Conservation Area on Route D in St. Charles.

The rainbows bound for the St. Louis area are spawned and raised at MDC’s Montauk Hatchery, southeast of Licking. “We’ll stock close to 40,000 fish this year,” Meneau said.

And this season anglers had better bring some larger nets. While the average size of the fish is about 11 inches, Meneau said that this year MDC will also be stocking some extra-large whoppers as well. “Some fish will weigh up to 10 pounds,” said Meneau. “There’ll be some real tackle testers.”

Area lakes stocked with winter trout include: • Carondelet Park Boathouse Lake in St. Louis • January-Wabash Lake in Ferguson • Jefferson Lake in Forest Park • Koeneman Park Lake in Jennings • O’Fallon Park Lake in St. Louis • S uson Park lakes 1, 2, and 3 in St. Louis County

• Walker Lake in Kirkwood • Wild Acres Park Lake in Overland • August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area lakes 3, 21, 22, 23 and 28 Between Nov. 1 and Jan. 31, some lakes are catch-and-release only, and some are catchand-keep. After Feb. 1, trout may be harvested from all lakes. Anglers should consult the St. Louis Area Winter Trout Program brochure for details, possession limits and bait restrictions, which is available at MDC offices or at https:// goo.gl/T9Qpp6 , or check regulations posted at the lakes. All trout anglers between age 16 and 64 must have a valid Missouri fishing permit to participate. Anglers wishing to catch and keep trout must also possess a trout permit.

MDC provides a chance for anglers to keep on top of trout stocking efforts in the St. Louis area.

“The fish stocking hotline has become very popular,” Meneau said, “and we update it right after we finish stocking for the day. It’s toll free from anywhere in the St. Louis area. There’s a recorded message that tells when we stocked, where we stocked and what fish we stocked.”

Anglers should call the hotline at 636-3009651 to get the latest information.

“These close-to-home opportunities make it easy for a quick trout fishing excursion after work, or during an activity-packed weekend.

It also makes trout fishing much friendlier on the fuel budget,” said Meneau. Plus, this season, those lurking lunkers provide even more incentive.

Emerson awardee leans on life experiences to help students succeed “I’m always a teacher.”

Evie Troupe makes the statement with confidence, even though the path to her 2018 Emerson Excellence in Teaching award came with some personal obstacles.

She became a mother at age 19, giving birth to twins. Troupe was held back in elementary school, but never gave up. And that’s part of why she is successful in her chosen field.

Troupe, who is the Library Media Specialist at Washington Elementary School, recalls the summer after she learned she had to repeat the first grade.

“My parents sent me down to the basement and had my siblings take shifts to teach me,” recalled Troupe, who is seventh in a family of eight children. “One would help me with my reading, another would bring down worksheets for me to do. That summer was a turning point for me. I didn’t give up. I never did.”

Troupe, who began her career as a fifth-grade teacher at Washington Elementary School in 1998, was nominated for the Emerson award by her building principal, Pamela Hollins.

“I was genuinely shocked I was even nominated,” Troupe said, who earned her master’s degree in education from Lindenwood University. “I’ve worked for 21 years with a lot of teachers I respect. It’s truly an honor.”

In her 21 years in Normandy, Troupe has had an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of colleagues, parents and students. She says she is able to make a connection based on her life’s philosophy and ability to relate to people. For example, she says parents appreciate the effort she makes with their children.

“I let parents know how much their children mean

to me,” she explained. “(For me) things weren’t always perfect, but we’re all in this together. I tell them I want their kids to do well, just as if they’re mine.”

Troupe is a wife and mother to two adult children: one is a high school biology and physical science teacher in Oklahoma. The other, her daughter, works in early childhood education as a substitute teacher.

Troupe credits her own experience as a mother for helping her better relate to her students. She says her son was always a good student. Like Troupe, he did well in math and science. School was a breeze for him.

But it was different for her daughter, who struggled in school. Troupe, who was also taking classes at the time, would study with her young daughter who had to work hard to get good grades. She sees the same in her students.

“Not every child is the same. If a child is giving me their best, that’s all I can ask for,” she said. “We want them to keep going, to keep making progress. If they keep working and seeing progress, they will see success.”

As a veteran in Normandy, Troupe has seen plenty of changes and she has chosen to stay. Part of that is because she began her own education in Normandy, having attended Pine Lawn, Garfield and Harrison Elementary schools as a child. She also has family in the Normandy footprint. The other reason she has remained is her dedication to urban education.

“Every child should have a good teacher,” said Troupe, who earned her bachelor’s degree in Education at Harris-Stowe State University. “It shouldn’t matter how much money their parents make or where they live. If they come here, I want to make sure they have a good start.”

Troupe also serves as a mentor for new teachers, making herself available when they need advice or to be a sounding board for concerns.

“Teaching can be stressful, but I try to let them know they’re doing well and where to go from there,” Troupe said.

Troupe earned her Library Media Specialist certification in 2016 and plans to finish her career in Normandy.

“Normandy is home,” she said. “I have bad days and good days, but seeing students succeed makes it all worth it. I love to see children learn.”

Free Career AdviCe: Make your own luck

By Robert Schrautemeier I recently sat in on a meeting that included professionals from various industries. Typically, people flock to someone that they already know and are comfortable with. In this particular meeting; though, one guy stood out for a few reasons.

Despite having no reason to interact with him for personal or professional gain due to our unrelated employers, his personality made him a star of the meeting. Here are some things that he did, and they reminded me of commons sense tips. Regardless of where someone went to college, and (for better or worse) how competent he is, doors will initially open for people that do these things.

1. Self Confidence and positive attitude. We are all attracted to someone that has a can-do attitude. No one likes a sour puss. I’ll never forget an episode from early in my career that highlighted just this point. I was the new guy at work, and every couple days or so, one of my managers would walk by and

casually ask, “How’s it going today?” Not really giving it a second thought and being a bit intimidated, I would reply “Oh, it’s fine I guess, thanks.” I wasn’t exactly exuding confidence. After a couple weeks, this particular supervisor finally broke down. He chided me by saying, “You know, every time I ask you how you are doing, you seem like something is bothering you. Do you have any good days?” I was struck by this. Was he just making conversation with me? Yes. But did he pay attention to my tone and my attitude? Yes! I’m forever grateful for his honesty, as it forced me to reevaluate my moods.

2. Smile. Having a great smile makes a person approachable. Otherwise, unless people really have an agenda that includes you, you are unapproachable. People do business with people that they like, and if smile, they are prone to enjoy your company.

3. Measure your expectations of others. Be optimistic about your own capabilities and opportunities for

success, while simultaneously assuming that others do not share this outlook. When the realization finally is reached that the only person you can rely on completely is yourself, a weight is lifted. Who is going to achieve your goals for you? No one! We all need help and it’s important to delegate, but you must be realistic about the possibility that others do not share your drive.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. describing what he called the “Drum Major Instinct” in a sermon over a half-century ago to the congregation in Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church: “If you want to say I was a drum major, say that I was a drum major for justice; say that I was a drum major for peace; I was a drum major for righteousness …

Lindenwood wrestler picks up some hardware Lindenwood University wrestling junior Carlos Jacquez was named Mid America Intercollegiate Athletics (MIAA) Wrestler of the Week after winning his second title recently.

No. 4 Jacquez started placing first in the two-day Midwest Classic that concluded on Sunday in Indianapolis, Indiana.

He then won his second title on the year in a bracket that included nine wrestlers ranked in the 125-pound weight class.

The returning All-American had one tech fall and two major decisions including a 12-1 major decision in the finals.

Jacquez, an Aurora, Illinois native, is 11-0 this season with three pins, two tech falls, and two major decisions.

The Lions will be back in action on Jan. 4 when they compete in the NWCA National Duals in Louisville, Kentucky. * One of many WANTED: Players for the indoor football team STL Stampede Open Tryouts: Participants will be competing in non-contact activities for an opportunity to earn a professional indoor/ arena league player contract. Generously coat 9-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Arrange bread, slightly overlapping.

milk, Gruyere cheese, maple syrup and cinnamon. Add chopped bacon, saving 2 tablespoons for later. Pour over bread in baking dish. With hands, press down on bread to submerge.

Early in her career, Marshall appeared in various sitcoms and dramas. Her reoccurring role as Myrna, secretary to the slovenly Oscar Madison in “The Odd Couple,” helped put her on the radar. On the classic sitcom “Happy Days,” which was created by brother Gary, she played Laverne DeFazio opposite Cindy Williams’ Shirley Feeney. Laverne and Shirley were so memorable that a spin-off series was soon created especially for them.

Arguably, Penny Marshall’s greatest achievements were behind the camera. The underappreciated 1986 comedy “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” was the perfect vehicle for Whoopi Goldberg.

She played a bank employee and computer expert remotely helping a spy return home. Director Marshall channeled Goldberg’s broad comedic style and talent for physical comedy into the story.

Two years later, “Big” was, well, really big. In 1984, actor Tom Hanks made waves with the romantic fantasy “Splash,” but his follow-up films were largely mediocre. In “Big,” Hanks

performing films such as “Joe Versus the Volcano” when he played Jimmy Dugan, a washedup former Cubs star coaching a professional girls baseball team. After that role, Hanks became a superstar, winning back-to-back Oscars for “Philadelphia” and “Forrest Gump.”

Marshall’s daughter Tracy Reiner also had a featured role in “A League of Their Own.” When I talked to Marshall on the phone in 2001 about “Riding in Cars with Boys,” she joked that her baseball movie should have its own cable channel because it was on TV all the time. In 1993, the film even spawned a short-lived television series of the same name.

Gifted with various talents, Penny Marshall was a shining star in Hollywood. Her contributions to television and film are undeniable as was her own comedic ability. She really was in a league of her own.

The big holiday has come and gone. Hopefully everyone got what they wanted…or deserved!

Particularly the Grinches out there better known as porch pirates.

Because of the big uptick in buying online there was an increase in the number of boxes delivered to homes this Christmas. Sadly, all of this has led to an increased production of buttheads. According to one report, 25 million packages are stolen each year from porches, which equates to 25 million buttheads. That’s way too many heads made from butts. Something has to be done!

One determined citizen came up with his own ingenious remedy. After numerous hits by these pirate punks and no assistance from an overwhelmed law enforcement agency; he took matters into his own hands. Using his engineering background, he came up with a maniacally delicious form of payback.

First came an authentic-looking package, which contained cameras for recording and a GPS for tracking. Next came a delightful little bit of engineering wizardry. Inside the box was a gizmo, which upon opening, would spew a typhoon of glitter into the pirate’s den of hate. But why stop there? Perhaps the lawbreaker may find it amusing to be plastered in a deluge of twinkles. So, as an added bonus, the machine also contained a canister which sprayed clouds of horrifically pungent intestinal odors. No one could enjoy being cov-

The video is priceless. Oh what fun it is to watch thugs get their reckoning in real time.

But what about those of us who are mechanically impaired? Until this device hits the market, here is a suggestion to get back at these lowlifes.

Stack a few boxes by the door and include any of the following: 1.

Dirty diapers - Nothing will change a person’s life of crime faster than opening a box expecting expensive electronics only to be whacked in the nose holes with a blast of putrid baby doodies.

2. Garbage – Missed garbage night? Not to worry, simply box up your trash, leave it on the porch—gone in minutes. You’ll never have to worry about missing it again.

3. Unruly teenagers – Stick your sassymouthed teen in a box outside and watch it vanish within seconds. Once the box is opened, the fun begins. The teen’s attitude will kick in as they roll their eyes then immediately demand to be taken to the mall. They will then start texting their legal counsel while insisting on being served some fast food. The only downside…the criminal will return the box within five minutes.

So play it safe out there and if all else fails go back to buying everyone gift cards again.
