Civic volunteers log countless hours helping local institutions to keep running smoothly By Brett Auten Driven by a sense of purpose, Luvenia Henry loves to contribute. Since 2008, Henry, a 77-year-old St. Peters resident, has logged more than 6,200 hours of volunteer work within the city’s police department. Even though she has received the Lifetime President’s Volunteer Service Award in 2016 for serving more than 4,000 hours, and also has earned five Gold Awards (500plus hours in a year) and two Silver Awards (250-499 hours in a year), Henry has no plans to slow down.

“It helps to show they appreciate what you’ve done,” Henry said. “It’s very independent and flexible and the older you get you need to get your brain active and get out among the people. If you stay at home all the time you start to stagnate.” Henry works twice a week in the Records Division with the police department performing tasks like entering traffic accident dates, processing police records requests and filing and preparing records for archiving. Theresa Wilkins is a St. Peters Police Records Administrator. She said that without volunteers like Henry, the department

would not be able to accomplish as much as it does. “Luvenia’s dedication, conscientiousness and excellence to detail make her perfect for this type of work,” Wilkins said. “Not only is Luvenia a pleasure to work beside, but she has become a good friend to all of us at the police department.” It’s not unusual for Henry to volunteer at least six hours a day and is not afraid to stay late if needed. Henry worked in the Medical Records Department at Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital before retiring in 2007. See ‘HEROES’ page 2
