Habitat St. Charles ReStore has begun accepting various contributions at its 1 Stop Donation Shop

Armed with its new philosophy and purpose, the Habitat St. Charles ReStore, located 186 Mid Rivers Center in St Peters has taken its mantra of, “help us help you help them and us,” to the next level.

In November of last year, the Habitat St. Charles ReStore began accepting almost everything as a donation under the umbrella of 1 Stop Donation Shop (or 1SDS). The goal is a rather simple but a needed one, to make donating items (that is, items that are safe and lawful to accept) easy, this is where the donation program comes in to play.

Week in and week out, staff at the Habitat St. Charles Restore see residents who have the best intentions when it comes to donating usable items, but the hassle of getting the right donations to the right organizations

“For 10 years we have had to turn away donations and that can make donors angry,” Lori Kehoe, ReStore Manager, said. “Over the last year or so we have worked to find a way to stop telling people no.”

Kehoe and her team have streamlined and simplified the process, partnering with several organizations and adding additional ones as the weeks go by.

Animal Shelter or clothing for Renewed Treasures then 1SDS saves you from making multiple stops across St. Charles County. Even more, it prevents usable items from being thrown away when they’re given to the wrong organization.

“Just rolled this out with different organization so that we can make an impact together,” Mark Migneco, ReStore assistant manager, said.

“Everybody that has come on board and helped each other and it has really started to take off. Within the last four-to-five months when donors come up to drop off and we notice other items they may have with them, we’ve let them know that we’re now a one stop and you can see them

start to smile.”

The One Stop Donation Shop Program’s ripple effect across the county is wide. Another example is volunteers and workers from Community Living come to help sort clothes and do a variety of tasks.

“What we’re trying to do is just help our individuals find work in the community that is purposeful, and by partnering with the ReStore that has expanded greatly,” Joann Burpo of Community Living, said.

“1SDS has allowed us to do more for those other nonprofits we are able to sort and disburse to organizations such as; Renewed Treasures, FISH, Helping Hand Me Downs, Cheap Street Thrift Store, and Goodwill. This link brings the volunteers and resources needed by each organization.”

“Anywhere these donations can do some good, we are willing to partner,” Kehoe said. “There will never stop being a need just how we disperse it differently.

There are plenty of organizations that need stuff.”

The Habitat St. Charles ReStore is open Wednesdaythru-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and donations are accepted at all times.

As the program grows, the need for volunteers increases. If you or someone you know is part of an organization in need or would like to donate or volunteer with the program, visit 1SDS.org.

“Sorting clothing is a huge help,” Kehoe said. “All sorts of abilities are needed.”

Kehoe stressed that Habitat St. Charles ReStore will continue its model of selling new and used building materials, furniture, and select home goods.

As with most financial products, there are different types of IRAs, each with their own benefits and intended users.

Below is a brief overview of the most common types of IRAs.

Traditional IRA

• Contributions to this type of retirement account may be fully or partially deductible, and taxes are not assessed until you make withdrawals from it.

• Contribution limits are as follows for traditional IRAs: $5,500 under age 50; $6,500 if you are 50 or older.

• Withdrawals can be made

from traditional IRAs feefree once you reach age 59.5.

• You can no longer make regular contributions to a traditional IRA once you reach age 70.5 or older.

Roth IRA

• The main difference between Roth and traditional IRAs is when taxes are assessed; traditional IRAs tax withdrawals, whereas contributions are taxed for Roth IRAs. • While there are many rules regarding withdrawals from a Roth IRA, there are certain qualifying expenses you may be able to use contributed funds for without having to pay a fee:

• first-time home purchase, qualified education expenses, death or disability, unreimbursed medical expenses or health insurance if you are unemployed.

• Contribution limits: $5,500 under age 50; $6,500 if you are 50 or older.

Simplified Employee Pension (SEP IRA)

• SEP IRAs are available to businesses of any size, even those who are selfemployed.

• They are easy to set up and operate.

• SEP IRAs come with low administrative costs.

• The employee is always 100 percent vested in (has total control of) all money in the

account.

• Contribution limits for SEP IRAs are as follows: 25 percent of an employee’s salary, or $53,000 for 2015.

• Withdrawal rules are the same as the rules governing IRAs. You should consult your own tax advisor when thinking about opening an IRA. They can help you understand the tax benefits and consequences of each account.

St. Charles County Executive heads to Jefferson City in support of transportation network companies St. Charles County Executive Steve Ehlmann traveled to Jefferson City to lend his support to House Bill 130, which was being heard in the House General Laws Committee. The bill, if passed, would establish a statewide regulatory system for Transportation Network Companies (TNCs) such as Uber and Lyft.

Ehlmann firmly believes these services are an important transportation option for employees, residents and visitors in St. Charles County.

He intends to speak to lawmakers on behalf of the bill, which is sponsored by Rep. Kirk Matthews, R-Pacific, as

well as the companion bill in the Senate, SB185, sponsored

by Sen. Bob Onder, R-Lake Saint Louis.

“Transportation options are important to employers trying to attract and retain a workforce,” Ehlmann says.

“Numerous St. Charles County businesses and many residents have expressed to me their desire for this service to become available.”

TNCs, such as Uber and Lyft, are accessible through an app on a smart phone or the web.

Customers call for a ride and then are picked up by a certified driver. TNC drivers provide transportation in their own

non-commercial vehicles.

Under the bill, TNCs must disclose the fare or fare structure on its website or digital network, provide riders the applicable rates being charged and the option to receive an estimated fare. The TNC’s digital network must display a picture of the TNC driver, the license plate number of the vehicle and a detailed electronic receipt to the rider. Further, TNCs must adopt a zero tolerance policy toward drivers using intoxicating substances, enforce driver eligibility requirements, including background checks and registration, adopt nondiscrimination policies

with respect to riders, and maintain individual trip records of riders and drivers.

TNCs are not restricted in unincorporated St. Charles County or in any other municipality in the county except the city of St. Charles, where they are prohibited.

Uber currently operates in Missouri only in St. Louis, Kansas City, Springfield and Columbia, and operated in Jefferson City for the governor’s inauguration this week. Uber is not operating in St. Charles County and someone desiring to hail an Uber ride anywhere in the county will not be serviced.

Ehlmann and County Councilman Mike Elam are interested in taking steps to move St. Charles County forward if the bill at the state level does not pass.

“We should be a leading force in the state for embracing technology in all phases and giving our citizens more transportation options for moving around the region,” said Elam. “Uber and other like services will make life easier and help our county grow.”

Bills in prior years have failed to come to a vote in either chamber of the state legislature.

“It remains preferable that the state regulate an industry that constantly crosses city and county boundaries,” Ehlmann says.

MDC to host Eagle Days in Clarksville Jan. 28 - 29 Every winter, Missouri welcomes record numbers of bald eagles and boasts some of the most plentiful viewing areas in all of the lower 48 states. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) encourages eaglelovers of all ages to discover nature and get outdoors to view our nation’s most iconic raptor at the annual Eagle Days event in Clarksville. Activities will take place at Lock and Dam 24 and the Apple Shed Theater in Clarksville on Jan. 28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Jan. 29 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Eagle Days events feature activities to entertain and educate the whole family.

MDC will have spotting scopes set up at River Front Park and volunteers and event staff will help visitors watch eagles and migrating waterfowl.

Every hour on the hour, the Apple Shed Theater will host a live eagle program, hands-on exhibits and displays, children’s activities, and viewing of the MDC video Where Eagles Soar. Attendees can also view the local premiere screening of “Eagles in Missouri,” a new short movie featuring past years’ Eagle Days events in Clarksville. The building is

not heated, so be sure to dress warmly. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will also provide tours of Lock and Dam 24.

“Eagle Days are a great way to enjoy nature in the winter and also a fun way to spend time as a family,” said Karen Armstrong, MDC conservation education consultant. “Be sure to bundle up the family as temperatures can be chilly. Bring blankets and don’t forget your camera and binoculars.”

All events at Clarksville Eagle Days are free. MDC hosts the annual celebration of winter wildlife watching in partnership with the U.S.

Army Corps of Engineers and the city of Clarksville. This year, Eagle Days events will coincide with Clarksville’s bicentennial celebration. Free commemorative posters will be available for attendees.

Clarksville is located south of Louisiana on Missouri Highway 79.

Kick starting your weight loss resolution

By Kaylan Goldstein Thinking about losing weight for your New Year’s resolution? If you’ve decided this is the year for a healthier you, be proud. It takes a true commitment to make healthy lifestyle changes. Losing weight not only helps you control or reduce your risk for diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, but it also helps you live longer, gives you more energy and makes you feel better about yourself.

Here are 10 tips to kick start your journey to a healthier you.

1. Focus on lifestyle changes and avoid fad diets.

You need to learn how to eat healthy, rather than following a crazy diet for a month. If a diet sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

2. Be realistic. If it took you longer than a week to gain the weight, it will likely take you longer than a week to lose it. And keep in mind, muscle weighs more than fat, so the number on the scale doesn’t necessarily track your progress.

3. Set goals. This is an important step to get you to where you want to be. Choose goals that

are achievable and specific. Focus on making gradual changes to meet your goals and keep them.

Eat three meals per day. Studies have shown people who skip breakfast actually weigh more than those who eat breakfast. Eating three balanced meals per day helps fuel your metabolism.

Don’t drink your calories. Cutting out sugarsweetened beverages, like soda, is a small change that could greatly decrease your total calorie intake. Instead, drink plenty of water. You could add a lemon or other fruit to your water for more flavor.

Keep a food journal and watch your portion sizes. Apps and websites are great tools to help with diet compliance. Sometimes you don’t really know how much you are eating until you measure it out and look up the nutrition facts.

Eat mindfully. Pay attention to why you are eating. Are you actually hungry, or are you just bored? Practice mindful eating by avoiding

eating in front of the television and slowing down when you eat.

8. Plan ahead. If you don’t, you might choose foods that are quick, convenient, and generally, unhealthy. Take one day to make dinner for the entire week and prepare your lunch the night before.

9. Ask the expert. Consult a dietitian to answer your questions or to provide a personalized plan for your weight loss journey. Go online to www. eatright.org/find-an-expert to find a dietitian near you, or call your local hospital and ask to speak with their dietitian.

10. Reward yourself. Instead of food as a reward, treat yourself to something that motivates you to meet your monthly goals. This could be a new outfit, a massage or something else that helps you stick to your weight loss resolution.

Overcoming the opioid epidemic America is in the midst of an ongoing opioid epidemic affecting families across the country. Reports show that there are almost 80 opioid-related overdoses a day, amounting to more than 28,000 deaths annually.

This figure continues to climb

as over 2.1 million people in the United States suffer from substance use disorders related to prescription opioid pain relievers, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Additionally, the rise of synthetic opioids like fentanyl, W-18 and carfentanil are threats

to those already using opiates as the epidemic worsens.

Where do opioid overdoses occur?

Data from the Centers for Disease Control shows that 77 percent of opioid overdose related deaths occur outside of a medical setting and 56 percent occur in private homes, meaning family or friends must often be the first to take action in an emergency situation.

Accordingly, it is increasingly important that responders understand how to prevent death from overdose, including knowing how to use naloxone, the opioid overdose reversal medication.

What does naloxone do?

Naloxone, the antidote that reverses an opioid overdose, works by neutralizing the opioid receptors in the brain, allowing an overdosed person to breathe again moments after it is administered. It’s been used in ambulances and hospital settings for decades and is now available for people to use in their homes or other remote areas.

overdoses with naloxone are conducted by non-medical bystanders. Without having a solution in the hands of those closest to opioid-related overdoses, lives are left hanging in the balance while waiting for emergency medical services.

However, there is an FDAapproved naloxone nasal spray designed for use by laypeople, like friends and family, who are not medically trained. It’s needle-free and requires no training or assembly to use while providing a strong enough dose to help reverse opioidrelated overdoses. Naloxone is only effective in opioid-related overdoses and does not affect a person without opioids in their body.

What can you do?

A majority of states have issued standing orders for FDAapproved naloxone products, which permit pharmacies to dispense the nasal spray without a physician’s prescription. If you or someone you know is susceptible to an opioid-related overdose, whether caused by illicit drugs, like heroin, or prescription painkillers, it is important to prepare for an emergency overdose situation.

By having naloxone on hand, you can save a life when every second matters.

MDC and MoDOT invite schools to fight litter through ‘No MOre Trash!’ annual can contest The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) invite Missouri public, private and homeschool students in grades K-8 to help fight litter in the Show-Me State – and to have creative and educational fun – by participating in the 2017 “Yes You CAN Make Missouri Litter-Free” trash-can-decorating contest.

The annual contest is sponsored

by MDC and MoDOT as part of the state’s “No MOre Trash!” statewide litter campaign.

The contest encourages school classes and groups to join in the fight against litter by decorating and displaying a large trash can with the “No MOre Trash!” logo and a litter-prevention message using a variety of creative media.

Schools may submit one entry in each competition category: K-2, 3-5, and 6-8. Entries are judged based on creativity, adherence to contest rules, and effective use of theme and logo.

First-place winners from each competition category receive $200 awarded to the sponsoring schools. All first-place winners are then eligible for a grand prize of a trophy and $600 awarded to the sponsoring school.

There is no entry fee for the contest. Participating school

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average American generates about four pounds of trash each day.

That’s more than nine billion pounds of trash per year!” said MDC NMT Coordinator Joe Jerek. “Much of that trash shows up on our streets and roadsides, natural areas, and waterways.

Litter harms our fish and water quality, plants, and hurts wildlife. Litter also hurts property values, landscape appearance, and our overall quality of life.”

Jerek added that littering is illegal in Missouri and can result in a fine of up to $1,000 and one year in jail.

A welcome to my world of weather Welcome to the inside view of weather! I am excited to be able to share with you through my new column the internal elements of weather, weather forecasting and weather phenomena. Throughout my columns we will journey into the world of weather and hopefully provide insight, education and those “ah-ha” moments that explain the whys and wonders of weather.

Weather is one thing that impacts every single person and is often the forefront of our conversations, so I am hopeful this column will allow you to look into the “window” of weather and leave with a new appreciation and knowledge of the wonders of weather and meteorology.

As a meteorologist, I love weather and the thrills of daily forecasting. In Missouri it is often quoted, “If you don’t like the weather now, wait 24 hours and it will be different” and this is what makes my passion for weather so exciting.

Here in Missouri we can often go from spring to winter within 24 hours. From having tornadoes in January to snow in

May – our weather constantly changes.

Our weather is always changing and I am excited to be a part of the Community News to help bring you the weekly forecast and a bit of weather 101 on everything from: what are the computer models, to snow snakes and why and how does hail get so big. I want to give you the view into the window of a meteorologist and answer the questions that cause many to wonder about the whys of weather.

St. Louis Teen Talent Competition kicks off its seventh year

The Seventh Annual St. Louis Teen Talent Competition will begin Feb. 4 and Feb. 5 with 169 performers taking the stage in the preliminary round of competition.

“We are thrilled with the ongoing response to this event from students, parents, arts organizations and the community. The Fox Performing Arts Charitable Foundation is happy to be able to provide the opportunity for students to perform at the Fox and on other stages around St. Louis.

We’re delighted that we are able to put talented young people in the spotlight,” said Mary Strauss, President of the FPACF Board of Directors.

The Fox Performing Arts Charitable Foundation reintroduced the St. Louis Teen Talent Competition in 2011 to showcase the St. Louis region’s most talented teens in the performing arts. The 2016 winner was Royce Martin, a pianist from Grand Center Arts Academy. Student acts may enter as soloists or in groups up to six people.

This year’s entries represent 63 schools in the bi-state metropolitan area (52 MO/11 IL) plus homeschoolers and include acts showcasing a variety of talents including a barbershop quartet, baton twirlers, improv comedian, contortionist, juggler, aerialist, color guard performer, dancers, and singers.

Each round and location will have a panel of at least three judges who will adjudicate and advance acts to the next round of competition.

Judges for the first two rounds of competition

will again include an impressive cross section of professionals from the St. Louis performing arts community.

The two days of preliminary competition, at Ritenour High School and Logan University, will narrow the field from 130 to 36 acts. These acts will then compete in the semi-finals on March 4 at Missouri Baptist University where the final 12 acts will be chosen to compete on The Fabulous Fox stage as part of a professionally produced show on April 8. This final event at The Fabulous Fox is free and open to the public. A total of more than $30,000 in scholarships and prizes will be distributed among the top competitors.

Additionally, students are eligible for scholarships from Lindenwood University, Webster University, UMSL and Southeast Missouri State University. Students can also win gift certificates, special awards and other prizes.

Finalists will also have unique performance opportunities within the St. Louis area arranged by FPACF and by request. Finalists from prior years have showcased their talents at The Muny, with the Chamber Music Society of St. Louis, Winter Opera, at the Sheldon Concert Hall, Shakespeare Festival Green Show in Forest Park, Six Flags – St. Louis, Taste of Maplewood, Let Them Eat Art, and Fair St. Louis.

Registration for this competition was free and open to all high school students in the St. Louis Metropolitan area.

Give Kids A Smile announced registration is now open for the next free dental health care clinic for kids set for Feb. 10 and Feb. 11 at Saint Louis University’s Center for Advanced Dental Education. The event is designed to meet the needs of toddlers and school-aged children through eighth grade, who are Medicaid-eligible, qualify for a school lunch program or need dental assistance due to other circumstances.

“We are all supposed to be brushing twice daily, flossing, using mouthwash and visiting the dentist twice annually,” commented Joan Allen, executive director of Give Kids A Smile. “These dental health basics are essential to not only our dental health, but also our overall health. Yet, for a variety of circumstances, some families simply cannot afford it. In fact, over the years we’ve seen an alarming number of children who have never been to the dentist. Many patients don’t even have their own toothbrush and either aren’t brushing or are being forced to share a toothbrush with family members. Give Kids A Smile is here to help.”

Each child registered to attend the upcoming clinic will receive X-rays, professional cleanings, fluoride treatments and sealants, as well as fillings, root canals and oral surgery, as needed. provides an entertainment area for children after they receive services. The space features face painters, balloon artists, games and more. Delta Dental’s Tooth Wizard strolls the clinic floor, along with a Spanish-speaking Tooth Fairy who helps communicate to non-English speaking children. At the conclusion of the event, each child goes home with a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss, as well as a free book courtesy of the St. Louis County Library Foundation.

To date, Give Kids A Smile has provided $8.2 million worth of comprehensive dental care services completely free of charge to 15,096 local underserved children through over 30 consecutive clinics.

Flu: Part II

I

t’s week two of my flu struggle and the battle against the super bug.

I have made it over the hump and there are hints that I just may have avoided being lowered six feet under and forced to take a bite of that big dirt sandwich. I owe it to the fact that I still have Kohl’s Cash to spend, which gave me the will to go on. Hey, twenty bucks is twenty bucks and if I can’t take it with me, I’m not budging!

I am seeing some improvement. My eyelashes have quit throbbing and my toenails don’t hurt as much. I can also actually swallow if I hang my head over the edge of the couch and let liquid trickle down my throat.

It’s been a rough road; although we should always look for the positive in any situation.

There have been a few advantages to hanging out with the Grim Reaper for the past few weeks.

For one thing, I didn’t accumulate any laundry. My fashion

choices were easy – I wore the same bedspread each day. I’d wrap it around my body burritostyle and drag it with me to the bathroom and throughout the house. As a bonus, I managed to sweep the floors and dust those hard to reach corners.

I didn’t have to cook. My throat felt like I had been drinking lava smoothies all week and everything tasted like clay. My husband understood and managed like a boss. Always the gourmet, he had a 12-meal plan laid out before him – a dozen eggs and a frying pan would keep him satisfied for days.

Bonus! After all this misery, I may have even lost a pound or two, thus getting a leap on my New Year’s resolution. Although, I wouldn’t normally recommend the Raging Flu Diet; there’s no better way to shed a few of those unsightly holiday pounds than to have a destructive virus pulsing through your body.

And finally, thank goodness

for medicine. I owe my survival in part to the giant blue bottle of Vap’O’Rub that I kept handy.

It was an inheritance from my grandmother’s estate and given to her by a long-dead ancestor.

It still has a full inch deep of goo left in it. If and when I do journey on to the other side, my grandkids will inherit it and if they’re especially deserving, maybe a little Kohl’s Cash!

O’Fallon’s Citizens Police Academy provides first-hand experience with police work Whether you’re considering a career in law enforcement, a civicminded Neighborhood Watch participant or just wanting to be better-informed about police work, the O’Fallon Police Department’s annual Citizens Police Academy offers hands-on training and discussions on a variety of criminal justice topics. The O’Fallon Photo Club’s 2017 photo exhibit includes a variety of perspectives The public is invited to view the O’Fallon Photo Club’s new exhibit in the O’Fallon Cultural Arts Gallery at the Renaud Spirit Center (RSC) at 2650 Tri Sports Circle in O’Fallon. Preschool registration is now open for the 2017-18 City of St. Charles School District school year The City of St. Charles School District is now accepting preschool applications for the 2017-18 school year. The deadline for applications is Feb. 24 for first round consideration of special funding. After this deadline, applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis.

The district offers half-day preschool programs at all six of their elementary school locations, as well as two full-day programs located at Blackhurst Elementary and Coverdell Elementary.

The City of St. Charles School District preschool program achieved recognition of excellence through Missouri Accreditation.

This distinguishes it as an exemplary program offering high quality programming to the children of Missouri. St. Charles Community College will be offering events providing information on health insurance available through the U.S. government, as well as letting individuals sign up for healthcare plans.

The events will be held Jan. 23, and Jan. 25-26 on the SCC campus located at 4601 Mid Rivers Mall Dr. in Cottleville.

“While there is talk in Washington of dismantling the The Affordable Care Act (ACA), no changes are likely to occur in the near future,” said Paul Roesler, professor of political science at SCC. “The ACA signup period lasts through January and any plan that people sign up for this month will probably remain in

effect through the year.”

The first event, Health Insurance 101, is an informational presentation

by Hana Hartman, an ACA navigator, that will be held from noon-1:30 p.m. on Jan. 23, in the auditorium of the Daniel J. Conoyer Social Sciences Building. No appointment is necessary to attend. Hartman will explain the ins and outs of Missouri’s health insurance exchanges, discuss possible changes that might occur under the Trump administration and provide information on how to sign up.

ACA Enrollment Days will be 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Jan. 25-26, at SCC. At these fullday events, Hana and other navigators will help students and community members sign

up for healthcare plans.

Some St. Peters residents eligible for help with home improvement projects The St. Peters Home Improvement Loan Program provides funding for lowincome homeowners with home rehabilitation project needs such as new windows, furnace and air-conditioners, roof replacement, driveway replacement or repair and more. Eligible applicants can receive up to $5,000 through a no-interest, five-year forgivable loan.

Eligible homeowners must reside in the city limits of St. Peters who has not previously participated in the

Urban County or St. Peters Home Improvement Loan Programs. The homeowner must have lived in the home for at least one year at the time of application and not exceed household income limits established by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

First Bank, EnergyCare provide warmth to St. Louisans With temperatures plummeting, First Bank employees recently donated 188 new electric blankets worth $5,617 to EnergyCare, a nonprofit organization located in St. Louis.

“I want to extend a big thank you to our employees for their generous donations,” said Ed Furman, First Bank Senior Vice President and Chief Investment Officer who organized the employee effort with First Bank. “Their outstanding efforts will help more St. Louisans stay warm and safe this winter.”

Since 1999, First Bank employees have donated a total of 2,295 blankets valued at $62,818. In the summer, First Bank employees also donated new air conditioners to EnergyCare. Combined, First Bank has raised a total of $138,813 for the nonprofit during the past 17 years.

UMSL swims by Lindenwood The University of Missouri-St. Louis men’s and women’s swim team opened day one of competition against Lindenwood by combining to win eight events.

The women won three, with freshman Merel Visser winning the 500-yard freestyle and swimming the third leg of the winning 200-yard medley relay team.

The men’s team won four events with sophomore Radoslaw Chupka and freshman Gabriel Jimenez each winning an individual event, while also swimming on the winning 200-yard medley relay team.

Lindenwood gymnastics add to the history books A new era of Lindenwood gymnastics started on Sunday afternoon in DeKalb, Illinois as the program took the floor for the first time without members of its inaugural class. The Lady Lions scored a 192.075 at the quad meet, their secondbest season-opening score in team history.

The Lady Lions had six gymnasts making their collegiate debuts in the meet hosted by Northern Illinois, and those six gymnasts competed in nine events. Among the top performances from that group were Breanna Franklin and Maya Davis on the vault, Taylor Colwell on the bream and on the floor.

Highlighting the meet though for the Lady Lions on the vault, bars and beam was the return on Kierstin Sokolowski who missed most of the last season with an injury.

Saturdays: Bosom Buddies

The St Charles County WIC Clinic is working to become a breastfeeding friendly clinic. As part of this effort, we have formed a breastfeeding support group for our area. What is great about “Bosom Buddies” is that we are not just open to WIC clients!

Bosom Buddies is a family-friendly breastfeeding support group. We are open to all moms and moms-to-be who are breastfeeding or interested in breastfeeding. The group is supported by the St Charles County WIC program so there will be information about the program available at each meeting. Each meeting will be a little different than the last. There will be introductions, games, interactive education, group conversation, and even snacks. Meetings will be held at the Middenorf-Kredell Branch Library in O’Fallon. We will continue to meet, at the same time and place, on the fourth Saturday of every month at 10 a.m. No registration required.

“Hidden Figures”

‘Hidden Figures’ will put you in orbit “Hidden Figures” does something that “The Right Stuff ” and “Apollo 13” neglected to do, even with great directors and high-profile casts. With Margot Lee Shetterly’s book as the source material, director Theodore Melfi looks at the women who made invaluable contributions to NASA and the Space Race. It took decades for these brilliant minds to get properly recognized, though.

Taraji P. Henson stars as Kathryn Johnson, a brilliant mathematician who becomes a “computer” at NASA. At a time when IBM mainframe computers were just being introduced into the space program, Johnson and her colleagues crunched numbers with paper, pencils and adding machines, figuring out ways to get astronauts up into space and back home safely.

As “Hidden Figures” shows; however, a beautiful mind could not overcome the racial divide of the 1960s. With “separate but equal” bathrooms for different races, Johnson must run to another building to use the restroom (the one closest to her office was designated for “whites only”). Johnson also has the double-whammy of being a woman working in a male-dominated field.

A Golden Globe nominee for her work in this film, Octavia Spencer plays Dorothy Vaughn, a working mother trying to move up through the ranks. When faced with career roadblocks, Vaughn takes matters into her own hands, creating opportunities in computer programming for herself that no one at NASA saw fit to offer her.

Of all the women portrayed in “Hidden Figures,” Mary Jackson is the one person with the most determination and grit. As portrayed

by Janelle Monae, Jackson wants to become a full-fledged engineer, but she needs additional classes to make that happen. Once again, the “separate but equal” issue comes into play, but Jackson refuses to step away from this fight.

A true feel-good film with a powerful punch, “Hidden Figures” even highlights the gender and racial divides in movies about the space program. Ron Howard’s brilliant “Apollo 13,” for instance, featured virtually nothing but men in white shirts and thin black ties looking at trajectories on computer screens. In truth, women such as Johnson, Vaughn and Jackson were behind the scenes programming computers and doing the math that made America fly.

This is a brilliant piece, punctuated by outstanding performances by the three female leads and great direction from Theodore Melfi. It’s also impossible to go wrong when the fantastic Octavia Spencer is front and center. “La La Land” may be the critical darling of the awards season, but “Hidden Figures” will put audiences into orbit.

“Hidden Figures,” rated PG for thematic elements and some language, currently is playing in theaters.
