With the amount of debt many young Americans take on to chase coveted and parent-pleasing bachelor’s degrees, some feel that the juice isn’t worth the squeeze.

There is $1.5 trillion in student debt outstanding as of 2018, according to the Federal Reserve. And according to the Pew Research Center, four in 10 adults under the age of 30 have student-loan debt. Advanced degrees, such as master’s and doctorate degrees often lead to even more debt.

Addressing vaccine myths Immunizations have been a hot topic recently. With different information floating around, it can be difficult to know what to trust. John Paul Shoup, MD, a BJC Medical Group internal medicine and pediatric physician, sorts fact from fiction to help you make healthy decisions for yourself and your family.

MYTH No. 1: Giving an infant multiple vaccines can overwhelm their immune system. It’s better to space them out.

Concerns like this come from a good place. It shows the parent or caregiver is thinking about their child’s health and what they can do to best protect them. That being said, it is certainly safe for children to be given vaccines on the recommended schedule.

An infant is constantly exposed to different bacteria and viruses all around them in the environment from the moment they are born. Because of this, it’s not unusual for their immune system to face dozens of potentially new bacteria or viruses every single day. The vaccines we give train the body’s immune system to fight back against particularly dangerous ones.

MYTH No. 2: I’m an adult. I don’t need to worry about vaccines anymore.

While you may think your last immunizations as a teenager are enough, there are a handful of vaccines that should be on your radar as a young adult and as you age. Of course, all adults — even if you are young and healthy — should get the influenza vaccine every year. If you didn’t receive the HPV vaccine as a child, it’s recommended through 26 years old and even up to 45 years old.

Every adult should also get a tetanus booster every 10 years and should receive the pertussis, or whooping cough, booster once, which comes in combination with the tetanus vaccine. As you move into older adulthood, between the ages of 50 and 65, you should receive the shingles vaccine and vaccines against pneumonia. If you have a chronic disease, like diabetes or heart disease, other vaccines might also be recommended. Speak with your physician every few years about any vaccines that can help keep you in optimum health.

MYTH No. 3: The flu vaccine will make you get sick and isn’t very effective.

Contrary to popular belief, the flu vaccine doesn’t give you influenza or make you any more likely to get any other colds or viruses. Unfortunately, it’s just really common to catch and spread colds or other viruses this time of year. In terms of effectiveness, we don’t know how effective the flu vaccine is until flu season is over. However, we do know it reduces your risk of getting influenza. We also know that even if it doesn’t prevent you from getting influenza, it will be significantly less severe if you’ve been vaccinated before-

hand, keeping you from needing to be hospitalized or put on a breathing machine. Influenza is a serious disease that can be potentially fatal for even young, healthy people. To keep you and your family well, we recommend everyone six months and older get the flu vaccine every year.

St. Charles County Assessor to mail 2020 personal property assessment forms The St. Charles County Assessor will mail approximately 178,000 personal property assessment forms for 2020 by Jan. 24. Assessments are due by March 1.

Individual personal property owners have the convenient option to file online after receiving the assessment form in the mail. The e-filing website, account number, and unique secure access code for the individual personal property owner are printed in a blue box on the top third of the form. The e-filing link also will be available through the Assessor’s website, sccmo.org/Assessor. Those who filed online in previous years should note that the unique secure code changes each year.

“E-filing is the fastest and most efficient way to submit a personal property assessment,” says Scott Shipman, St. Charles County Assessor. “Another advantage of filing online is that

property owners have the opportunity to save and print their completed 2020 assessment for their records after it’s successfully submitted.”

By state law, personal property assessments must be filed with the Assessor every year.

Those who fail to complete their personal property assessment may be charged a late-filing penalty up to $105. Additionally, failing to file a personal property assessment form may delay the ability to renew or register license plates for a vehicle.

“Submitting the form by the deadline is important because it assures a fair and equitable distribution of taxes,” explains Shipman. “The tax rate for everyone in the county is impacted by those who do not declare their personal property.”

Tips to improve wellness and prevent stroke Stroke is often thought of as something that happens to older people, but more people under 50 are having strokes due to increased risky behaviors, such as smoking and untreated high blood pressure.

Strokes don’t discriminate, according to the American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary health organization devoted to fighting cardiovascular disease and stroke. They can happen to anyone, at any age. About 1 in 4 people worldwide will have a stroke in their lifetime.

However, up to 80% of first strokes may be prevented.

In recognition of World Stroke Day, the American Stroke Association offers these five tips to help reduce your risk of stroke and maintain mental sharpness as you age: • Keep blood pressure in mind and under control. High blood pressure is the No. 1 controllable risk factor for stroke. Work with your doctor to manage your blood pressure and get it into a healthy range (under 120 over 80).

• Eat colorful fruits and veggies. Eating lots of fruits and vegetables can lower blood pressure over time, which may help reduce your stroke

risk. Some fruits and vegetables, such as mangos, avocados and blueberries, are especially rich in vitamins and minerals that improve brain function and heart health.

• Rest up. Getting 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night can improve brain function both today and long-term. A soothing bedtime routine and avoiding screen time before bed can increase the quality of sleep you’re able to get.

Sleep-related breathing issues may also increase stroke risk, so seek treatment right away if you suspect sleep apnea or similar problems.

• Meditate. Emerging science shows practicing mindfulness and being aware of your breathing may reduce blood pressure. A quick way to be mindful anytime is to pause, notice your breath and observe details in your surroundings.

• Take a hike. Getting active activates brain cells, encouraging them to grow and connect more efficiently. Aerobic exercise, like going for a walk, also gives your arteries a workout and makes your brain more resilient to reductions in blood flow that can cause strokes. To maximize health benefits, the American Heart Association recommends adults get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity (or a combination) and two days per week of moderate- to high-intensity muscle strengthening activity.

O’Fallon Fire Protection District announces death of battalion chief

O’Fallon Fire Protection Battalion Chief Melvin (Mel) Emge died on Jan. 9at the age of 61. Emge served the O’Fallon community for 44 years and was a member of the IAFF (International Association of Fire Fighters) Local 2664 and FFAM (Fire Fighters Association of Missouri). He is survived by his wife Mary, his daughter Katie and his son Tony.

The funeral service was held Jan. 14 at 11 a.m. at Assumption Catholic Church. Burial was at St. Paul Cemetery in St. Paul, Missouri.

Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Charles County to participate in national arts contest The Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Charles County is one of thousands of Clubs across the country joining in a search to identify talented young artists. The competition is part of Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s (BGCA) National Arts Program, a comprehensive initiative promoting young people’s creativity, and encouraging artistic skills and cultural enrichment.

As a participant in the National Arts Contest, the Boys & Girls Club of St. Charles County (BGCSTC) will host a gallery showing at the St. Charles Unit on Monday, Jan. 27 at 5 p.m. This is a public event and free for all community members to attend. Following the showing, the club will submit members’ artwork and photographs in two contest areas: National Fine Arts and Image Makers Photography. Selected artwork will be screened at the regional level, and a limited number will be sent to BGCA’s Atlanta headquarters for judging at the national level.

The club’s participation in the National Arts Contest is due to a collaborative relationship with Lisa Jarrell, a fine arts and visual artist. Her primary media is painting and drawing. She belongs to the local St. Charles Baja organization and is a recent transplant from Poplar Bluff. Jarrell has worked in the juvenile court system using art therapy with the kids. This past summer Jarrell worked with the club on community quilt to promote racial unity. The finished quilt was displayed in St. Charles and St. Louis.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Charles County is excited to bring this competition back to the local area after last participating in 2016. The National Arts Contests, along with FIRST Robotics and Youth of the Year, are opportunities provided to enhance the experiences of young members of the community.

Located at 1211 Lindenwood Avenue in St. Charles, the Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Charles County has served youth throughout St. Charles County for over sixty years. At both the St. Charles County units, BGCSTC provides programs for more than 1,000 boys and girls annually in three priority outcome areas: Academic Success, Good Character and Citizenship, and Healthy Lifestyles.

St. Charles Community College hosts Human Trafficking Speaker and Film Series Human trafficking – the use of force, coercion or fraud to obtain labor or commercial sex acts – is a global crisis. The $150 billion shadow industry targets more than 40 million victims each year.

Because knowledge is one of the strongest contenders in the fight against the problem, Gateway Human Trafficking (GHT) and St. Charles Community College (SCC) are partnering together to present the Human Trafficking Speaker and Film Series, featuring several speakers and film screenings throughout the spring 2020 season.

Started in 2002 by Kevin and Tammy (that is where the KT comes from); right after Tammy lost her job with TWA after 17 years of being a flight attendant, we had a clean take-off in the laundry business.

Being local, and family owned, we try our best to provide a clean and comfortable experience while doing your wash. We offer music and internet and provide a comfortable place where you can meet and talk with other locals. As of this year, we have had three couples meet while doing their laundry, and were later married.

We have some of the biggest washers in St. Charles County. They will do up to three king

size comforters at one time.

We take credit/ debit cards (also google and apple pay) right at the washers and dryers so you don’t have to raid any piggy banks for quarters!

We also just added some brand new dryers. We hope to continue to add new equipment to keep that new, fresh look.

Ingredients: ½ cup butter ½ cup all purpose flour ½ tsp pepper ½ tsp ground allspice 1 carton (32 oz) chicken broth 1 cup milk ½ cup heavy whipping cream ½ pound sliced fresh mushrooms 3 garlic cloves, minced 2 cups shredded smoked Gouda cheese Chives and smoked paprika for garnish Directions: In a large saucepan, melt butter. Stir in the flour, pepper, and allspice until smooth.

Gradually add in broth, cream, and milk.

Bring to a boil.

Add mushrooms and garlic. Reduce heat.

Garnish with chives and paprika if desired.

Simmer 5-6 minutes or until mushrooms are tender.

‘Joker’ could be a big Oscar winner

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work. Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

n 1940, the first issue of “Batman” was released in stores and newsstands. The Dark Knight had been introduced earlier in “Detective Comics” before earning his own solo title. That particular issue also unveiled the Joker, a villain that has battled Batman for 80 years and shows no sign of slowing down. In addition to the comics, the Joker has appeared in movies as well as on the “Batman” television series in the 1960s.

With “Joker,” Joaquin Phoenix became the latest actor to play the character on screen. He has already taken home a Golden Globe for his performance and earned an Oscar nomination. His victories thus far show a change in Hollywood’s attitude towards comic book movies. For years, superhero films were not taken seriously when it came to awards season. Despite the dominance of “Avengers: Endgame,” for instance, the epic film only earned one Oscar nod for visual effects.

Last year, however, “Black Panther” took home Oscars for production design, costume design and original score. It received a nomination for Best Picture, but that top award went to “Green Book.” On Jan. 13, “Joker” received

more enigmatic Joker courtesy of Heath Ledger. His Academy Award-winning performance was complex and terrifying highlighted by elements of dark humor. The “disappearing pencil trick,” for instance, is abrupt and jarring, prompting different reactions from the audience. This Joker also gives various reasons for his scarred facial features, but it’s hard to know which one is the truth.

Ledger’s character tests the moral fiber of his victims as well.

In one sequence, he rigs two ferries with explosives and gives the detonators to the passengers. Each device is set, however, to blow up the other boat. Both ships will be destroyed at a certain time unless the crew of one decides to blow up the other. The Joker wants to prove that when the chips are down, people will think only of themselves.

In “Joker,” Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck starts out as a comedian, but failure in his chosen profession drives him mad. Like his cinematic predecessors, Fleck transforms into the Joker and starts his own reign of terror on Gotham City. Phoenix’s performance could earn “Joker” the first of many awards on Oscar Night. And that definitely is no joke.

Beware if you happen to venture into an area that recycles. We spent the holidays with our daughter who resides in an extreme recycling state.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not against recycling, but when you’re used to tossing out everything it takes a while to get reprogrammed. One night, my husband and I finished dinner at their place and helped clean up afterwards. We then sat down to relax.

“What’s this?!” we heard our daughter holler from the kitchen.

No doubt one of her children had committed some high crime. We braced ourselves for a stern lecture and a time out. We found ourselves getting the stern lecture and a time out.

“Can we come out of prison yet?” I pleaded.

“Not until you promise to never throw another soda can away.”

“But it’s just a can.”

“Just a can?! It’s ten cents, Missy. Were you born in a barn? Do you think money grows on trees?”

“Hey, those are my lines. You’re plagiarizing.

That’s a worse crime!”

We swapped places in time out.

Afterwards she showed us the garage. Lined up against one wall were five giant shiny black plastic bags bulging at the seams.

“What are these filled with leaves or the bodies of people who didn’t recycle?” I asked.

“Funny. They’re filled with cans. You’re looking at our retirement fund.”

“Huh?” “That’s cash baby. We save our cans then haul them to the supermarket and put them into a machine that spits out a receipt that we trade for cash.”

The next several days were a challenge. I tossed out a few vegetable cans along with a cereal box followed by a milk jug. I was in detention until the 5:00 news.

I wailed, “You get money for bean cans and plastic bottles too?”

“No. They go into the recycle bin to save the planet. You’re not one of those baby seal killers are you?”

Afterwards I dared not dispose of anything.

“Hey,” I yelled from beyond the bathroom door.

“Am I allowed to flush or are you recycling your TP too?”
