St. Charles club meets monthly to celebrate German language and culture with ‘Frühschoppen,’ a traditional community gathering By Brett Auten Over a couple of frosty beverages sprung the idea for a unique local club. Two St. Peters residents were reliving the days of yore when they decided to take matters into their own hands. Dean Yarolimek and Menko Christoph are both former members of the Air Force, and they were reminiscing about their days in Germany. Christoph was born and raised in the country before coming to the U.S. as a 17-year-old and joining the service, putting in 20-plus years. Yarolimek met his wife, Marianne in Germany while in the Air Force. They married in 1962, and she has been stateside ever since. “We were sitting around, drinking a beer, and talking about how there isn’t a social atmosphere like when we did Frühschoppen in Germany,” Yarolimek said. Frühschoppen is the German tradition to meet up at a pub, inn or tavern in the late morning and usually on Sundays, traditionally held after church service. The specific customs vary from region to region, but Frühschoppen is often a kind of brunch, but does not necessarily involve food. Six years later after the Yarolimeks and Christophs four-person Frühschoppen has sprung a regular gathering of those who miss and embrace the German culture. On the last Saturday of every month, at 11 a.m., 30-or-so residents from the area meet at a Culpeppers restaurant, located at 3010 W Clay St., in St. Charles where German is the chief language spoken. “It has evolved to where the majority of the regulars, or their spouses, are born and raised in Germany,” Yarolimek said. “That is
what makes us uniquely different.” The club has adopted the official name of Frühschoppen Samstag Verein which translates, roughly, to Early Drinking Saturday Club. Christoph is quick to add that Frühschoppen Samstag Verein’s gathering is not merely monthly Oktoberfests and not the place for, “wannabes who put on a German outfit for Oktoberfest and then an Irish one for St. Patrick’s Day.” “You must have some connectivity to Germany,” Christoph said. “You need to have a basic understanding of the German language and Germany etiquette. That is minimal of what we expect.” In the club’s early days, understanding the different dialects of Northern Germany and Southern Germany that individuals brought with them became a bit of a challenge. Out of this came a hybrid of sorts that the pair called, “Deutsch-nglish.” “Often, the wanna-be Germans, those who maybe studied it in school or were part of an exchange program many years ago, or maybe a friend of a friend is German, they speak Deutsch-nglish,” Christoph said. Yarolimek has been quizzed many times on why Frühschoppen Samstag Verein doesn’t have more of a St. Louis center. “The majority of our members are from St. Charles County,” he said. “The word is getting out, and it is doing us a lot of good.” Christoph, meanwhile, is cautious about the club’s growth. What started as an idea between two friends has grown into something that is treasured. “I enjoy the camaraderie and getting tidbits of news from people on what they’ve experienced and what’s going on back in Germany,” Christoph said. “It’s nice to get together and drink, toast and sing.”
