Kurt Frisz is returning to that world as he was appointed last week as the new Chief of Police for St. Charles County.

Frisz has more than 35 years of experience in law enforcement, including the last five years as chief in Wentzville. He replaces Colonel David Todd, who retired last week Looking back on his time in Wentzville, Frisz - who will likely begin his new duties on March 12 - is proud of the positive culture he helped cultivate there.

“I think (the employees) would tell you that their input is valued,” Frisz said. “Coming in from the outside, I know it will be a little awkward. They don’t know me. But I’m really excited to see what the culture is like and what policies are in place.”

Frisz also noted that the public should expect even more community engagement from the county officers.

St. Charles County has one of the largest and fastest-growing law enforcement agencies in the state and the largest in St. Charles County. The department is comprised of more than 130 sworn and 35 civilian staff, who provide a range of police and public services to approximately 396,000 residents and businesses within 587 square miles and 800 miles of public roads in the unincorporated areas of the county.

Its presence extends into the neighboring cities of Augusta, Weldon Spring Heights, St. Paul, Flint Hill, Portage Des Sioux and West Alton with contract patrol services and full-time patrol services to the municipalities of Dardenne Prairie and Weldon Spring. “I know a lot about county-wide policing,” Frisz said. “It feels like I am going back to the environment that I came up in professionally.”

St. Charles County Executive Steve Ehlmann raved about Frisz’s qualifications.

“We are fortunate to have someone who is highly respected, knows St. Charles County well, and has the vast experience needed to step into this role,” Ehlmann said.

Prior to becoming chief in Wentzville, Frisz was with the St. Louis County Police Department for 29 years. He began as a recruit and served as a patrol officer, sergeant, lieutenant, and then captain. He was a member of the Tactical Operations

Unit, where he served on the special weapons and tactics (SWAT) team and as a pilot. Over the years, he was supervisor of the North County Precinct and the Bureau of Drug Enforcement, and commander of the Bureau of Tactical Support, Central County Precinct, Metro Link Detail and St. Louis County Multi-Jurisdictional Drug Task Force. He was in charge of the execution of more than 1,000 high-risk search warrants and resolved over 70 hostage/barricade situations while commander of the St. Louis County Police Department’s Bureau of Tactical Support. In 2019, Frisz was named the Missouri Police Chiefs Association Chief of the Year.

Three house fires in three days prompt firefighters to issue safety reminders Between Feb. 3 and Feb. 5, Central County Fire & Rescue responded to three separate house fires in the St. Peters area. The most damaging was an attic fire that ripped through a home on Plum Leaf Circle, an electrical fire on JaqMar Ct. was caught in time to save the home and a grease fire on Trailview Ave. resulted in minor kitchen damage.

“These incidents are a reminder that a house fire can happen to anyone, anytime. It is important to know what you can do to prevent these fires, and what to do if one happens in your home,” said CCFR Assistant Chief Steve Brown.

In the attic fire, the family had an escape plan that gave them the time to get their family and pets out of the home.

The electrical fire on JaqMar Dr. was discovered after the resident smelled smoke, became concerned and called 911. When the grease fire started the homeowner called 911 before attempting to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher.

“In all these incidents the residents did the right thing and it likely saved them and their families from being injured or worse,” said Brown.

CCFR is reminding residents of a few important fire safety tips: • Make sure everyone in your family knows, and practices your home escape plan.

• Test your smoke alarms to ensure they are working. Make sure you have one on every level of your home, inside each bedroom, and outside each sleeping area.

• Never leave the kitchen while cooking.

• Have a working fire extinguisher easily accessible in the kitchen.

Monday Evening — Plum Leaf Circle, Attic Fire When CCFR crews arrived on the scene of a house fire on Plum Leaf Circle in St. Peters at 11:55 p.m. Feb. 3, they were relieved to find the family and their pets standing safely on the driveway as flames billowed from the rooftop.

Knowing that everyone was safely accounted for, the team began to attack the fire.

When they entered, the home was filled with smoke, but the flames were hidden in the walls and attic.

Charles Fire Department and the Cottleville Fire Protection District worked together to get the fire under control in approximately five minutes.

“This family did everything correctly. They had a home escape plan that was put into action, allowing them and their pets to get out unharmed,” Brown said.

The Central County Community Assistance program was also on the scene to provide the family with post-emergency essentials, including clothing and a hotel room for the evening. Program volunteers also provided canteen service for the first responders.

‘Visions of Cuba’ art exhibit to be held through Feb. 28 St. Charles Community College will host “Visions of Cuba: An Exhibition of Photography,” curated by Professor Brian D. Smith and photographer Jeff Hirsch. All images in the exhibit were shot on location in Cuba over the last three years by a select group of serious local photographers. The photos capture the unique characteristics of the Cuban people and their culture.

(BCI) – a nonprofit that improves the lives of adults with disabilities through employment opportunities – recently received a Nulogy PackStar award for “Most Valuable Personnel.” The MVP award recognizes BCI for internally utilizing Nulogy solutions in order to achieve its corporate objectives.

Inspiration Corner: Jillian Michaels skyrocketed to fame as a fitness guru on “The Biggest Loser.” She was known for her tough stance on obesity and did not shy away from sharing her own struggles as a “fat kid”. She impressed upon those under her tutelage the importance of pushing through the pain to arrive at their ideal body shape and size. One could say it is her life’s mission to help people achieve optimal physical health. Therefore, when Lizzo fans took issue with her comments on physique and the risks of diabetes, I was intrigued by the backlash, especially considering her song, “Truth Hurts.”

Both Jillian Michaels and Lizzo are performers who cater to certain demographics. When I was a heavy-set woman of 310 pounds, I adored artists like Lizzo who embrace their shape and size.

But after I lost 140 lbs. I understand the reality of Jillian Michaels comments. This leads me to ponder something; when it comes to seeking the truth about a topic, is there any way to be objective when we base our choice on preference?

I enjoy magicians who utilize optical illusions.

I’ll never forget when David Copperfield made the Statue of Liberty disappear. I mean, how did he do that? But lately I have been wondering about the optical illusions I subscribe to that hinder me from knowing the truth about myself.

Remember when Glamour Shots was the bee’s knees? Now, we don’t have to waste time and money to make us look pretty – we can simply utilize a Facebook or Instagram filter. But what happens when I start to believe that’s how I look in real life? We see this in spades on the show

Inordinate optical illusions “American Idol” when someone thinks more highly of their voice than is rightly so.

Are we all performers in the circus of life trying to project the perfect optical illusion? And if so, is there any way to know what the truth is?

And are we too busy fighting over preferences to discern truths that will satisfy the longings of our hearts?

Truth is not something that should be bought or sold. But when so many people claim to know the truth about a certain subject and then try to sell it to us, isn’t it just a little refreshing that there is only one man who claimed to be the truth?

SCC is now accepting Distinguished Alumni nominations Each year, thousands of students begin or continue their professional journeys at St. Charles Community College. These students go on to become leaders in their professions and influencers in their communities. The SCC Foundation is currently seeking nominations for its Distinguished Alumni Award to honor these individuals.

To be considered, an individual must have attended SCC. While degree completion is preferred, it is not required. Additionally, potential nominees must be highly respected among their peers and seen as a leader in his or her field with

a demonstrated commitment to the community.

Timberland senior receives academy appointment Timberland High School senior Hannah Kuhlmann has received and accepted an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado. She received the nomination from Congressman Blaine Luetkenmeyer for her appointment to the United States Air Force Academy Class of 2024.

Kuhlmann has a 4.429 GPA and is ranked third in her class.

She is currently enrolled in three Advanced Placement courses and two Project Lead the Way courses. Kuhlmann serves as treasurer of the Timberland National Honor Society, has attended Missouri Girls State, and is a member of the Civil Air Pa-

trol, which is an auxiliary of the United States Air Force. She is a four-year member of the varsity swim team, qualifying for state each year, and is a three-time all-conference and a three-time all-academic athlete.

“Timberland is very proud of Hannah for being appointed to the U.S. Air Force Academy,” shared Timberland Principal Dr. Kyle Lindquist. “It is a testament to her work ethic, character, and integrity. Ambush climb to sixth place in standings The St. Louis Ambush play in the South Central Division of the Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) with home games at the Family Arena.

The Ambush improved to 8-8 on the season when they defeated the Harrisburg Heat 9-6 Saturday night at the Family Arena.

The Ambush held a 3-2 lead at the end of the opening period, thanks to goals from Stefan St. Louis, Douglas Dos Santos and Ado Jahic.

Harrisburg’s goals came from Elton de Oliveira and Tavoy Morgan. St. Louis’ goal was the first short-handed tally of the season for the Ambush.

Jahic, a St. Louis native, scored his first in front of the home crowd.

The Ambush increased their lead to two goals (5-3) by halftime thanks to two second quarter tallies from Duduca. Harrisburg’s second quarter goal came when Morgan scored his second of the night on a power play.

Just over a minute into the third period, Dos Santos posted his second goal of the game to make the score 6-3. The Ambush went on a power play when Harrisburg was penalized for too many men on the field at 11:46 of the third frame.

The home team made good on the opportunity when Pablo Da Silva buried a long shot in the net with 15 seconds remaining in the power play. The Ambush took a 7-3 lead into final stanza.

The Ambush got another power play opportunity when Dylan Hundelt was sent to the sin bin for tripping at 14:36 of the third quarter. With the power play still in effect at the start of the fourth quarter, Duduca completed the hat trick with his power play goal 24 seconds in to give the Ambush an 8-3 lead. With the sixth attacker in play for Harrisburg, Dominic Francis scored to reduce the lead to 8-4. Just over two minutes later, Jerjer Gibson found the back of the net to shave the lead to 8-5. Francis struck again when

his shot came off the dasher board and careened into the net, making the score 8-6. The Ambush would score one more time, when Oitomeia scored an empty netter from the defensive third at 12:05 for a 9-6 final.

The next Ambush home game is slated for Feb. 21 when the Ontario Fury visit the Family Arena for a 7:35 p.m. contest. *Movin’ on up Player from Ambush heading to Florida Veteran St. Louis Ambush midfielder Corey Adamson is heading to Florida as he will join the Orlando SeaWolves for the remainder of the season.

Ingredients:

Hand Vinegar: 1 cup water 1/4 cup rice vinegar

Piquant Sauce: 1/2 cup plain yogurt 1 tablespoon mustard 1 tablespoon horseradish 1/2 avocado, mashed until smooth

Directions: To make hand vinegar: In small bowl, stir water and rice vinegar.

Maki: 2 sheets nori 2 cups prepared sushi rice 6 thin slices corned `beef 1/2 avocado, cut into slivers 1/4 cucumber, cut lengthwise into thin strips r ice seasoning wasabi peas

cucumber crosswise along rice, covering half the surface closest to you.

To make piquant sauce: In small bowl, blend yogurt, mustard, horseradish and avocado.

Securing corned beef, avocado and cucumber with fingers, use thumbs to push end of mat up and over filling until edge of the nori meets rice on opposite side. Press firmly on roll.

To make maki: Lay sushi mat on clean surface.

Moisten hands with hand vinegar and shake off excess. Place one nori sheet on mat, shiny-side down. Spread 1 cup rice across nori, leaving 1 inch empty at farthest end.

Lift top of mat and roll firmly until tight and round. Squeeze gently to shape roll. Press ends in carefully to secure loose rice. Remove mat and set roll aside.

HBO’s ‘McMillion$’ series exposes real-life fraud

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work. Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

In 2004, McDonald’s gave away a total of $15 million to random customers in some of their restaurants. Instead of a huge game promotion, the management simply chose winners at random as they walked in the door. Compared to other giveaways, this was rather understated and only a few customers were aware of it. According to a “New York Times” article, a similar, very quiet giveaway of $10 million took place at other McDonald’s locations a few years earlier.

Although this seems like a magnanimous gesture, the fast food giant was making restitution for a scandal involving their popular “Monopoly” promotion. For a 12-year-period, the biggest prizes were awarded to a circle of co-conspirators brought together by a man known to the FBI as “Uncle Jerry.” The Mark Wahlberg-produced “McMillion$” examines this real-life event and shows how a seemingly trustworthy individual tried to make himself and his cohorts wealthy.

Moore On Life We’ve barely dipped our toes into February and already this has been a most interesting month. So many things have taken place. To start out, an exciting thing occurred on Sunday which hasn’t happened in 909 years.

“The Chiefs won the Super Bowl?”

Yes, the Chiefs won…YAY! But it’s only been 50 years since that last happened. Maybe it just seems like 909 years. But no, not that. The other thing.

“Oh, the groundhog crawled out of his burrow and forecast an early spring?”

Hmmm, rat-like rodents living in dirt holes; are we talking about weather predictors or Congress? Well, yes the fuzzy-faced beast came out of his den and foretold the weather.

But, no. That happens every February. Not such a big deal.

Give up?

I’ll take your silence as a resounding cry of defeat.

Palindromes, baby! The second day of February turned out to be: 02/02/2020. A palindrome, which reads the same forwards as backwards. Like civic, level or racecar or my personal favorite, taco cat. Tacos and cats, what a glorious world we live in…sigh!

So there you have three exciting things. That’s quite enough to start off the month, but no there’s more. Impeachment finally came to an end. For those of you who haven’t been following the news.

Impeachment is a new flavor of ice cream infused with an abundance of peach mixed in with a little mint. It’s actually a really nasty combination and is expected to be voted out shortly. Rocky Road will take its rightful place, which coincidentally, explains the state of politics at this time.

Speaking of state, The State of the Union also took place. That was eventful. Among other things, perfectly good pieces of paper got shredded. I guess it’s because the President said he will start a new campaign to plant thousands of trees.

What a week. I don’t think we can handle any more excitement. So let’s just hunker down and wait for spring, which according to, NO, not Doppler radar; satellite images or an iPhone weather app, but an overweight whiskered marmot, is right around the corner.

I hope you enjoyed this strange palindrome phenomenon because it won’t happen again for another 101 years. In between that time the Chiefs will win many more games; the groundhog will make more predictions, but unfortunately, Congress will still not have accomplished anything.
