He had messed up plenty of times before but this was different. The snarled steel and the hiss of reality were all around him. Michael was drinking and driving. Something he had done too many times before, but on this night the St. Charles County resident – who asked that his last name is left out of this story – had caused an accident where two others were injured. The wail of the sirens sounded his impending doom.

Soon after, he was being charged with two felony assault counts and potentially up to seven years in prison. Michael wasn’t a bad person, just sick. He needed help and prison

isn’t always the best place to receive the kind of help he needed.

“I was willing to do whatever it takes,” Michael said. “I wanted to get better and figure out how to deal with it but I didn’t know what to do. I thought I could control my

drinking on my own. They say you have to hit rock bottom and this was certainly my bottom.”

An estimated 94 percent of graduates of the program since it started in 2000 have not reoffended, whereas the national average is close to 75 percent.

Court officials from across the country come to St. Charles to learn how to improve their programs. For example, in June a representative from Maryland will be in the area as well another from the White House.

Julie Seymore is the Treatment Court Administrator for St. Charles County.

“It is a tough, rigorous program that has evolved over the years,” Seymore said. “The goal has always been to keep them out of the judicial system and into a life of recovery.”

The criteria to stay in the

program is filled with accountabilities. Not only do members attend treatment several nights a week, but there is community service and not only do the participants have to pay program fees, but they must also either be employed or enrolled in school.

Underneath the St. Charles County Treatment Court umbrella is five separate tracts: drug, DWI, veterans, co-occurring (meaning both mental and substance issues) and family.

The DWI tract houses the most members. The veterans tract is in its fifth year.

“Veterans who have had difficulty transitioning to civilian life are often suffering from PTSD or TBI,” Seymore said.

“To put them in regular treat-

ment programs didn’t do justice to what they experienced. It is so much different.”

The numbers are startling and the proof is, as they say, in the pudding. Two-thirds of all adult arrestees and over half of juvenile arrestees test positive for illicit drugs at arrest and up to 80 percent of child abuse and neglect cases and nearly 50 percent of domestic violence cases are substance-abuse related. Incarceration of drug-using offenders costs between $20,000 and $50,000 per person, per year. Nearly two out of three people who go to prison do reoffend and for the cost of sending one person to prison, three can go through treatment court. Evaluations from the state of Oregon and Dallas County, Texas, have shown that for every dollar invested in

treatment court, nearly ten dollars are saved by corrections Last week, the St. Charles County Court was filled with another graduating class, the 23 there bumped the total number of graduates to 1,523. It was a room filled with men and women who were beyond grateful that they were granted a new chance at a clean and sober life.

“I’m married now and have a child,” Michael, who graduated in 2017, said. “These were all things that I wanted but I just wasn’t able to grab because I was too busy feeding my addiction and not being the person I could be. This was a stepping stone that was challenging and difficult but it allowed me to redirect my life and put the pieces together in ways I never imagined.”

St. Charles County parks hosts ‘pop-up museum’ Bring your family heirlooms, personal treasures, and oral histories to St. Charles County Parks’ newest program, Show and Tell at the Museum, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., April 14, at the St. Charles County Heritage Museum near St. Charles. This program gives the public an opportunity to show their keepsakes and tell stories about them in an informal, fun setting.

Prized possessions or heirlooms can be anything with sentimental value. From personal antiques to family jewelry to precious photos, participants can reveal the story each cherished treasure tells. Historic photos of St. Charles County, objects related to history, and conversation pieces also are encouraged at this “pop-up style”

museum style program.

Those who don’t have items to share are invited to attend as well. The program will feature a behind-the-scenes look at some possessions from the County collection not on display at the museum. Light refreshments will be provided.

The Heritage Museum is conveniently located at 1630 Heritage Landing, near the Page Avenue Extension. There is no charge to visit the museum and attend the program. St. Charles County plans interactive expo to highlight public services, programs Residents who have ever wondered what St. Charles County Government does to serve them soon will have a great opportunity to find out. The county is partnering with Mid Rivers Mall to offer the St. Charles County Government Expo from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., March 9, in Center Court on the lower level of the mall. Representatives from more than 15 county departments will be on hand in a fun, interactive setting to talk about services provided St. Charles County and programs available in the community.

“We are pleased to be able to partner with Mid Rivers Mall to offer this first-ever St. Charles County Government Expo,” says County Executive Steve Ehlmann. “It gives us an excellent opportunity to talk with residents about the essential services they receive from their county government. We hope residents will come talk with us about how we can continually work to serve them better.”

The public is invited to explore job opportunities with St. Charles County, register to vote, ask questions about property assessments and taxes, develop a family emergency plan and find out about exciting events coming to the Family Arena. The Public Health Department will offer heart health screenings, families can enjoy the pet adoption area and adopt a pet that day or make a craft with the Parks Department. They’ll want to check out vehicles and equipment from the St. Charles County Police Department, including Officer Bailey, the department’s robot dog! One with Courage Gala to raise funds for children victimized by abuse The Child Center, Inc., a nonprofit organization that provides services to children victimized by abuse and neglect in Northeast Missouri will host its annual gala, April 27, to raise much-needed funds to continue fighting child abuse.

The sixth annual black-tie gala will be themed around a Kentucky Derby garden party and guest are encouraged to wear bow ties and hats while enjoying themed drinks and appetizers, a three-course dinner, an impressive live and silent auction, and top-notch entertainment by the Downtime Band. The event will be held at the St. Charles Convention Center in St. Charles and is open to the public.

Pride St. Charles announces historic first Pride Parade in St. Charles Pride St. Charles (PSC) announced that they will be hosting the first LGBTQIA+ Pride Parade in St. Charles County on June 15 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. The historic first Pride Parade in St. Charles County will be immediately followed by the fifth St. Charles Pride Festival, held annually at Frontier Park in St. Charles.

The parade will begin at Bales Park, heading south on N. Main Street, continue to N. Second Street, on to Clark Street, before continuing on N. Main Street through St. Charles Historic Main Street cobblestones, reaching Boone’s

Lick Rd., and concluding at Riverside Drive and dispersing at Bishop’s Landing.

“We decided to host a pride parade this year because it is our fifth year and we thought it was about time that we gave our community what they have been asking for since we started,” said Parade Coordinator and PSC First Vice President, Jason Dunn.

“The city of St. Charles has been very helpful with this process. They gave us a very fast application approval, and also assisted with the route planning. We could not be more thrilled to have the support of the city for this history making moment,” said PSC President, Beth Finder.

Additionally, Pride St. Charles will be hosting a wedding for the fourth year. The wedding contest is currently open to applicants through a form on the PSC website.

“As for suffering: I believe there are fewer and fewer people than ever who can escape major suffering in this life. In fact, I’m fairly convinced that the Kingdom of God is for the brokenhearted.” - Fred Rogers as written to Tim Madigan.

The world lost one of its most effective helpers when Fred Rogers passed away from cancer on Feb. 27, 2003. Like many, I grew up on the fringes of Fred Roger’s neighborhood. He was familiar yet odd. His gentle way of speaking to the camera struck me as otherworldly. Or maybe I simply preferred the more caustic children’s programs of the day. I liked my heroes to wield a sword or brandish a gun because I liked it when the good guys beat up the bad guys.

Therefore I thought Mr. Rogers was a wimp. I never considered that love might be the more powerful weapon.

When we are children, we long for the day we will grow up. We strive for adulthood like a sprouting plant strains for the sun. We have this idea that once we reach a certain age we will know everything, have ultimate freedom and will line our pock-

ets with the comforts we have previously been denied. Since we dream in Technicolor, we are often crushed to learn that much of the world operates in black and white.

Fantine sings, “Life has killed the dream I dreamed,” in Les Miserables and we weep because we know what she sings is true. We feel the pain of loss with every heartbeat. Any illusions we have about the horrific reality in which we live are shattered each day when we turn on the radio or television. Some malignant politician or philandering corporate head may try to convince us they have not wronged us, but we know differently. Thus we learn to distrust people. We erect walls no neighbor can breech. We hide in the safety of our homes until fire or earthquake or eviction reminds us there really is no safe haven.

We have become so callused to the pain that when a neighbor is killed in a car accident, we resort to anger because the ensuing traffic has caused us to be late to work. Compassion ranks much lower than inconvenience on our scale of justice, so when our child interrupts a YouTube

video, we scream at him to “Shut up!” and throw him into the other room. That is why Fred Rogers was so beloved in his day. He spoke to these broken little ones.

He said, “I like you just the way you are.”

Our longing for love is a wound not healed by Marvel action heroes or romantic comedies. We need someone real to touch us and remind us who we are: sacred souls who live in broken bodies. The Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals (MoASSP) has announced that Seager Middle School Principal Dr. Kandy Worley has been named the Jim L. King MoASSP Middle School Principal of Year. Behind every great school is a caring principal, an administrator who not only supports the school’s success, but also fosters good character, builds relationships, encourages collaboration, and instills a love of learning. Worley exhibits all of these traits and more.

As principal, she has made a positive impact at Saeger by building trusting relationships with students and really getting to know them.

“I invest a lot of time in my students and making students feel good about themselves and their school,” said Worley. “My parents know that I care about their children and their learning.”

It is evident that Worley is passionate about learning, her students, and her staff.

“If I were to name or think of the one thing that makes me happy about what I do, it would be the kids. It is their laughter, smiles, their innocence, and sometimes even their mischievous nature,” said Worley. “We

have some of the best students and staff I have ever had the privilege to work with, and I am lucky to be the principal at Saeger Middle School.”

Worley has been a member of the Francis Howell family for the past 24 years, working as a Spanish teacher, high school assistant principal, high school principal, and in her current role as Saeger’s principal. Worley earned her Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Maryville University in 2009.

South High LifeSmarts wins state title DECA, FBLA students headed to state DECA, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and Life Smarts are all extracurricular opportunities for students in high school business classes to further explore their interest in a variety of business careers.

In January, the Fort Zumwalt Board of Education recognized the Fort Zumwalt South High School LifeSmarts team and celebrated their state title. LifeSmarts, the ultimate consumer challenge, is an educational opportunity for students in sixth-through-12th grade through the National Consumers League. Students qualify by taking online quizzes in five main areas: personal finance, technology, consumer rights, environment and health and safety. The top 12 teams in this online competition advance to state, where everyone has the chance to compete in two rounds, then the top three teams compete in two rounds for the title.

While the South High team has qualified for nationals, they will be at the state FBLA conference and competition on those dates instead.

There, they will be joined by fellow Fort Zumwalt students from all four high schools. This month FBLA students competed at the district level,

These are comments of people looking at the children’s art currently on display at Picasso’s Coffee House in St. Charles. All the art was created by children staying at The Saint Louis Crisis Nursery while working with registered Art and Play Therapists in the Healing Hearts Program.

Chris Schulte, the owner of Picasso’s, is thrilled to have the art displayed. The Healing Hearts Program utilizes art and creativity as a way for the children of the nursery to express their feelings and to help work through any trauma they may have experienced or are currently experiencing.

The Healing Hearts program has been a part of the Crisis Nursery for over 20 years, and DiAnne Mueller, CEO of Saint Louis Crisis Nursery, has been thrilled with the results thus far.

“Between the two therapists, 154 kiddos receive art or play therapy each month. We estimate that over 22,000 children have had a chance to work through tough times with the Crisis Nursery’s Healing Hearts Program.”

Not only does the program allow children to explore their emotions through art, but it also allows them to have one-on-one time with an adult.

Mueller said, “To have an adult focus on them, listen to them and help them feel better is so valuable to their development.”

The Ambush played two games during week13, losing in overtime to the Orlando SeaWolves on Friday night, and then defeating the Florida Tropics on Sunday for their ninth win of the season.

Hewerton placed in the “bench” category for his performance as head coach. The Ambush’s nine wins thus far this season under Hewerton’s leadership set a new franchise record for wins in a single season for the current Ambush franchise. It also matches their total wins for the previous three seasons combined. He took the helm of the Ambush prior to the 2017-18 season and rebuilt the squad since doing so. His search for talent included holding traditional tryouts in St. Louis as well as in his native Brazil last summer.

Students and staff at Jefferson Elementary School are celebrating at the induction of Denise McField into the 2019 Missouri Sports Hall of Fame for Track and Field.

McField, a physical education teacher at Jefferson, was among a group of people honored for their contributions to the Berkeley and McCluer South-Berkeley High School Track and Field programs.

They were recently recognized during the induction ceremony in Springfield, Missouri, for having won a combined 28 state team championships between 1982 and 2017.

As head coach at Berkeley High School from 1986 to 1993, McField’s girls track and field teams won state championships in 1990, 1991 and 1993.

As a USA Track and Field-Level 2 certified coach, McField instructs her students on proper mechanics and how to strategically run their races. She also helps students realize the value of their contributions to society as a whole.

Ingredients:

olive oil

1 slice whole-grain bread

2 tablespoons pine nuts

1/4 cup fresh arugula

fresh Parmesan curls

2-3 sun-dried tomatoes

salt, to taste

2 tablespoons hummus

pepper, to taste

Directions:

Spread toast with hummus.

Toast bread; set aside. Wash and pat dry arugula; set aside.

Lightly toss arugula with drizzle of olive oil; layer on top of hummus. Top with sun-dried tomatoes. Sprinkle with pine nuts and add Parmesan curls. Add salt and pepper, to taste.

Remove sun-dried tomatoes from jar and lightly pat with paper towel to remove excess oil.

‘Green Book’ backlash is undeserved

or me, the Academy Awards have always been my “Super Bowl” where the best of the best come to receive top honors for their cinematic achievements. It’s traditionally a time for making predictions and watching deserving actors and actresses go home with the gold.

The Oscars are also the perfect opportunity to see celebrities dressed in designer outfits and sporting tons of jewelry.

Unfortunately, the 91st Academy Awards highlighted some things that are wrong about Hollywood these days. Case-inpoint: the backlash over “Green Book,” a well-written and directed period piece. In the film, a black musician named Dr. Donald Shirley (Oscar winner Mahershala Ali) hires a boisterous Italian man (Viggo Mortensen) to help him on his tour through the Deep South.

“Green Book” took top honors in a Best Picture field filled with the likes of “BlacKkKlansman,” “Roma” and “Black Panther.” Spike Lee, who won an Oscar for Best Adapted screenplay this year, was noticeably upset when director Peter Farrelly’s film won the Oscar. Lee reportedly attempted to leave the auditorium after the winner was announced, but he was stopped at the exit. Twitter users also pointed out that the faces on stage for the “Green Book” film were mostly white.

Ho hums The doldrums have hit. The dictionary defines them as a state or period of inactivity, stagnation or depression. I define that as; my husband the day after Super Bowl. His team lost.

The doldrums set in once the holidays are gone, although you’d never know since my neighbors still have their blowup Santa on the roof. He’s up there deflated and flat as a doormat. It looks like Rudolph made a slight miscalculation on the chimney drop and left him face planted smack dab on the shingles.

As for the after-holiday clearance sales–poof gone! Disappeared faster than my husband when I said, “Hey, let’s go shop the clearance sales.” By the time I finally found him curled up under the couch cushions and dragged him out, we had missed out on the good stuff. The only things left were a few XXXL ugly Christmas sweaters, a carton of broken candy canes and some leftover badidea ornaments.

He drove home grumbling, “That was a waste.

Who puts llamas on their tree anyway?”

I tuck my shopping bag further under my feet.

Hey, at 80 percent off who could resist? I’ll give them to his mother. She’ll think they’re reindeer… until she gets those cataracts fixed. As for the sweaters, they’ll make nice cat blankets; everyone knows how much cats love to lie on sweaters.
