Coming to a ‘Turning Point’

Turning Point Advocacy Services’ looks for community support to help survivors of domestic abuse and their children overcome the cycle of abuse

It’s time to yee-haw for a worthy cause.

Turning Point Advocacy Services’ is turning up the volume on its annual country-andglam-themed Boots ‘n Bling Fest fundraiser to be held April 14 at the Innsbrook Resort Aspen Center. In addition to the traditional dinner, dance and auction, this year’s event will debut a new, family-friendly outdoor festival area that will feature food, games, booths, music and more.

While they assist or partner in other, smaller fundraisers during the year, Boots ‘n Bling is its Big Kahuna.

“With making it Boot ‘n Bling Fest, we’re hoping more guests find it an easy way to support their community while having a great time with their friends and family,” Sarah Gramanzini, executive director of Turning Point, said.

Turning Point’s vision is to help create a just culture of nonviolence, where people are equally valued, and where healthy relationships and self-worth flourish. What started in 1994 with one little apartment, is now a 35bed facility that is consistently filled.

Guests can choose to attend the festival only or upgrade to VIP access which includes dinner with drinks, an exclusive lounge area

and premium silent auction items. All guests will be invited to join a live auction hosted by Dusty Thornhill. This year’s event will honor Carrie and James Gates, both former board members, for their dedication and support of Turning Point’s mission to assist survivors of domestic and sexual violence.

Last year, the fest had a special tinge to it as Turning Point announced it was going from a 15-to a 35-bed facility.

“Last year, it was great to share that news with some of those who had helped make that happen,” Gramanzini said.

Turning Point serves individuals and families in Franklin, Gasconade, Lincoln,

Montgomery, Warren and St. Charles counties. Its goal is to help survivors and their children overcome the cycle of abuse. Turning Point provides a 24/7 hotline, emergency shelter, court advocacy, safety planning, economic empowerment, counseling and resource education to victims of domestic violence, sexual abuse and sex trafficking.

Each year more than 500 women and children seek assistance from Turning Point. It shelters more than 100 women and 60 children annually and provide support services for many more through community-based programs.

For help, call the hotline at 888-873-7233. For more information or to donate, call 636-456-1186, visit turningpointdvs.com,

or find Turningpointwmo on Facebook.

It takes a continual supply of items to fully stock the shelter. Some of the items most often needed include fragrance free paper and cleaning products, personal hygiene products, food items like snacks, baking supplies, bread, and meat and Walmart and Visa gift cards in small amounts ($10 to $25) and Gas cards in small amounts ($10 to $25).

Looking into the future, Turning Point would like to expand into Franklin County.

“It takes a lot,” Gramanzini said. “It takes folks to staff, there’s the general operation of it. Bills are more than what they used to be. We do not just want to open, but sustain and be there for families to be safe.”

FZ Education Foundation hosts 5K for Grow Your Own Teacher program

The Fort Zumwalt Education Foundation is a 501c3 that raises funds to support the Grow Your Own Teacher (GYOT) program, which provides financial assistance in the form of a forgivable loan to individuals selected to participate.

This financial assistance allows participants to complete their undergraduate degree in a high needs area of teacher education, with the ultimate goal of receiving their teacher certification and returning to work as a teacher in the Fort Zumwalt School District.

Since 2005 the foundation has put 13 teachers into Fort Zumwalt classrooms, teaching special education, high school math, science

and foreign language. Another eight are currently in college.

This year, three Zumwalt seniors were named awardees: South High’s Kamryn Boyd is the president of South High’s Educators Rising, an A+ Tutor and a PPI mentor. She plans to attend Lindenwood and wants to teach high school special education. West High’s Faith Habeck is a varsity cheerleader and a PPI mentor. She is student teaching in the St. Charles School District through the Lewis & Clark Tech School. She plans to attend Lindenwood and hopes to be certified in special education and math. North High’s Abby Porter is on the varsity wrestling, volleyball and

track teams, and is a PPI mentor and a member of National Honor Society. She is still in the process of selecting a university, but plans to teach secondary math.

The 5K is one of three annual fundraising events for the organization. The 16th Annual Grow Your Own Teacher 5K takes place at 1 p.m., April 22 at Fort Zumwalt North High School. $35 registration fee includes t-shirt. Register at shorturl.at/iopu8.

Missouri’s 2023 Miss Amazing representatives announced

Missouri Miss Amazing is an organization that encourages girls and young women with disabilities to consider their goals, challenge themselves, and take pride in every aspect of their identity.

On March 4, during an event held at Lindbergh High School, Miss Amazing announced this year’s six Missouri representatives in their respective categories. They are: Izabella Uccello from Springfield - Miss Amazing Jr. Teen, Emily Lyon from Sullivan - Miss Amazing Teen, BeLov'ed Brooks from Olivette - Miss Amazing Jr. Miss, Leanne Ketchum from St. Peters - Miss Amazing Miss, Susie Stufflebam from O’Fallon - Miss Amazing Sr. Miss and Melelani Perry from Maplewood - Miss Amazing Mentor.

The Miss Amazing event creates an equal opportunity for girls and young women with disabilities to build self-esteem by allowing participants to engage with every

level of society to dismantle stereotypes and open pathways for personal growth.

According to Miss Amazing’s website, due to widely-held myths about their capabilities, girls and young women with disabilities are often held back from taking risks that could enrich their personal development, deprived of opportunities to make friends, and granted less access to resources. As a result, girls with disabilities are more likely to experience low self-esteem than girls without disabilities.

Miss Amazing representatives are shining examples of the fact that girls with disabilities have diverse strengths and big ambitions. Over the next year, the Missouri Miss Amazing Representatives will work together to serve their communities through various volunteer service initiatives. They will also represent their state at the National Miss Amazing event in Chicago from July 28-30.

The Ambush have two games remaining in the 202223 regular season, which wraps up next weekend with two games in the Sunshine State. Large donation given to Lindenwood

The Lindenwood softball team received the single-largest donation in program history, as an anonymous donor contributed $50,000.

As a supporter of women’s athletics in general, the donor wanted to utilize that commitment to inspire support for all NCAA women’s athletics at Lindenwood. As part of Giving Week, Lindenwood challenged 50 donors to “Make a Gift” in support of any NCAA women’s athletics program, as a commemorative celebration of 50 years of Title IX.

“We’re incredibly grateful and blessed to receive this gift and support,” said head coach Erin Brown. They are choosing to invest in people and specifically our players. This will immediately impact our players giving us an opportunity to enhance our program above and beyond basic operational needs. Our player experience is a high priority for us and we hope to continue to make improvements along our journey as a NCAA Division I program.”

Getting

Movie:

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work. Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

One of comedian George Carlin’s most memorable stand-up routines was “A Place for my Stuff.” Carlin’s observation was directed at people who literally have too much stuff in their homes. I fell into that category. I worked in St. Louis for 14 years before I was laid off and later found a job on the West Coast. That job also ended and, after a fruitless search for another job, I planned a move back to my hometown. Unfortunately, I never realized how many items my closets, bags, duffels, boxes and suitcases could hold until I started opening them. In retrospect, it was frightening.

When I was a child, my parents were concerned that I spent too much money on comics and they were right. After carrying my collection from residence to residence in my adult years, I finally donated my collection to an ill friend who owned a comic shop. As the boxes went out the door, I did some mental arithmetic and felt queasy realizing how much those four-color books cost me

toes. Repeat with second muffin top half for other foot. Frost toes.

Attach final cupcake with remaining pretzel stick to butt area of cake to make tail. Frost tail.

Apply 1 1/2 cups shredded coconut all over cake. Press chocolate candy melts into bottoms of bunny feet to resemble foot pads. Add chocolate chips to resemble pads for toes. Place remaining coconut in plastic bag. Add green food coloring. Toss in bag until coconut is colored. Spread around base of cake for grass. Decorate grass with chocolate eggs.

over the years. Some comic books had intrinsic value but, these days, if you don’t have rare comics such as the first appearance of “Spider-Man” in “Amazing Fantasy #15,” most collectors won’t be interested.

I’m also a freelance writer and, in the 2000’s, I was offered movie junket trips to Los Angeles to cover new films and interview celebrities. Those offers included airline tickets, rooms in nice hotels and a per-diem to cover additional expenses. I also walked away from those gigs with press kits that contained press notes and lots of great photos. I carried my collection of press kits from place to place until they became too heavy and burdensome. Because collectible shops no longer had interest in press kits, they went down the trash chute during my current move.

My significant other also flew to California to help me move the rest of my stuff. I thought I did a good job throwing things away but, when

she opened my apartment door, she was shocked at what remained. It took both of us hours to get our van loaded and ready to go. Because I hadn’t pre-booked hotels along the route, we stopped at various hotels along the route to get some sleep. We planned to stay in Tulsa but, due to a shortage of rooms, we drove to Joplin to find lodging.

Instead of avoiding the inevitable, I should have been tossing stuff and packing the “essentials” long before the Christmas season began, but I focused on my job search rather than getting rid of junk. Additionally, I should have contacted companies that would have taken my stuff for free.

I did fill several boxes with items for Goodwill, which made me feel a little better, but my lack of planning will continue to bother me.

My biggest fault has always been impulse buying things that ultimately will land in a box and then in the trash. Learn from my mistakes and get rid of the clutter.

Moore on Life

Men and women are wired differently and I have irrefutable proof.

The other day my husband and I went out shopping together, which as any woman knows is a mistake from the get go. But against my better judgement, I allowed him to tag along only if he behaved himself and earned his keep.

First, he would have to push the shopping cart then he would have to lug my groceries into the trunk and most importantly, promise not to question any of my purchases. Oh, and buy me lunch, definitely buy me lunch – and not one of those cut-rate coupon deals either.

So, we had just walked into the entryway of the big box store and were immediately accosted by five huge televisions screens positioned right smack dab in front of our viewing space. There was no getting around them. We stood transfixed.

Each screen showed the same program; a cooking segment with a lady chopping colorful vegetables, whisking up a tasty broth and adding yummy chicken chunks to a pot.

Here’s the response:

Me: “Oh wow, look at that tasty soup. I need to get the recipe.”

Him: “Holy crap! That’s gotta be at least a 70inch screen!”

“Really? Are you even paying attention? That’s an amazing pot of soup being created there.”

“Huh? Soup? Are you hungry already? Could be 75 inches. I better go measure it.”

I had to quickly lure him away from the bright shiny object or he would have invested all of our grocery money into one of those gigantic beasts on the spot.

“Hey, I think they’re giving out pizza sam-

ples on aisle twelve. If we hurry we can beat the crowd,” I said.

His need for food overpowered his obsession over the super-sized screen and a catastrophe was avoided thanks to free handouts. As we waited in line for our turn, a mom in front of us grabbed a few samples for her toddler and herself.

“Wasn’t that a cute little boy in front of us?” I asked as we finished up our snack.

He looked at me sheepishly, “There was a kid? I only saw a very hot lady.”

He was immediately sent to the car and all future outside privileges were permanently cut off.

Archeological Humorist: someone who unearths absurdity and hilarity in strange and unusual places including public restrooms, the lint filter, and church meetings. Most recently, she excavated a find in her neighbor’s bird feeder.
