Week-to-week. Month-to-month. There are families that are hanging on by a thread.

In St. Charles County, local agencies receive hundreds of inquiries each month asking for diapers, baby clothes, car seats and other basics.

And each year, Shower of Love looks to remedy that.

Since 2007, Shower of Love has collected $966,000 in donations for nonprofits in St. Charles County, assisting hundreds of mothers, infants, and families each year.

According to Shower of Love Coordinator Jeanne Spencer, federal programs do not typically provide diapers and baby care items, and for many families spending an average of $100 a month for baby supplies can be a struggle.

Shower of Love wants to make sure that no mother has to reuse diapers or trust second-or-third-hand equipment, which can lead to serious physical and developmental problems for babies.

“No baby should have to sit in a dirty diaper because mom or dad doesn’t have enough diapers,” Spencer said. “One box of diapers may be all of the difference in the world for these moms.”

Slated for May 2, the 13th annual Shower of Love is a baby care drive sponsored by the Community and Children’s Resource Board of St. Charles County.

drives for the Shower of Love and things are kicking off this week with a new event, Fill the Ambulance for Babies.

Mid Rivers Mall and the St. Charles County Ambulance District (SCCAD) Grants Administrator want to help local families by partnering to “Fill the Ambulance for Babies” on Saturday, April 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Mid Rivers Mall in St. Peters.

Shower of Love and SCCAD representatives will be accepting donations of baby basics, such as baby wipes, diapers, Enfamil

formula, new car seats, pack ‘n plays, and strollers. Look for the SCCAD ambulance at the entrance near V-Stock and Macy’s.

Fill the Ambulance for Babies is just one of several local events benefiting Shower of Love.

Mid Rivers Mall Drive reopened at railroad crossing north of I-70 Mid Rivers Mall Drive reopened last month at the Norfolk-Southern railway crossing north of I-70. The road had been closed since Jan. 28 to allow Norfolk-Southern to reconstruct its railway crossing to accommodate lane and trail improvements as part of the city of St. Peters’ Mid Rivers Mall Drive Widening transportation project.

The new railway crossing is now wide enough to accommodate two northbound and two southbound traffic lanes, as well as a 10foot wide bike and pedestrian trail.

and reduce congestion on Mid Rivers Mall Drive at I-70 north to Ecology Drive. Improvements already had been completed at the I-70 interchange, North Outer Road and Ecology Drive, plus a 10foot wide trail was constructed from the interchange to Salt River Road.

The entire project is expected to be completed this spring. Remaining work includes completion of trail work near Main Street.

St. Charles County Assessor to send notices of real estate assessment in April The St. Charles County Assessor will mail 2019 Notices of Real Estate Assessment to property owners in April. State law requires the assessor to revalue all real property in the county as of Jan. 1 of odd-numbered years. The valuation notices reflect the change in value since Jan. 1, 2017.

“Along with the assessment details, the notices include information on property tax relief and the appeal process, and answers to frequently asked questions,” says Scott Shipman, Assessor.

Notices will be sent in three mailings: Washington, Wentzville, and St. Charles school districts first; Fort Zumwalt and Orchard Farm school districts second; and the Francis Howell School District third. Taxpayers have 10 days from the mailed date on the notice to schedule an informal hearing with a staff member from the Assessor’s office to discuss the property value or classification by calling 636-949-7431 or 1-800-822-4012, ext. 7431, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Scheduled informal hearings will be conducted Monday through Thursday at 201 N. Second

St. in St. Charles beginning the last week of April.

“Taxpayers are welcome to contact us with any questions they have about the assessments,” adds Shipman.

The assessor is responsible for establishing the fair market value of both real estate and personal property within St. Charles County to assure taxes are distributed fairly among those responsible for payment. Real estate and personal property values are adjusted as necessary to reflect current market and economic conditions such as interest rates, inflation rates, supply and demand, and changes in tax laws. Political subdivisions, which include school, city and fire districts, establish property tax rates/levies based on budgetary requirements needed to appropriately fund services provided within their jurisdiction. The Collector of Revenue receives these rates annually by Oct. 31 and is charged with issuing property tax bills and the collection and disbursement of taxes to the political subdivisions.

Inspiration Corner: Hero or hypocrite?

“History has proven that these noble virtues (sincerity and conscientiousness) may degenerate into tragic vices.” Martin Luther King, Jr. Do actions always speak louder than words? I considered this recently as I clumsily jogged down the street. My belly was a little flabbier and my heart a little heavier as I considered my recent responses to difficult situations. I chose poorly in some areas; fast food instead of lowfat, couch instead of 5K. But physical fitness aside, it was the poor choices I made in personal relationships that were causing the most angst. I wondered, am I a hero or a hypocrite?

In his sermon, “Love in Action,” Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote, “One of the great tragedies of life is that men seldom bridge the gulf between practice and profession, between doing and saying. A persistent schizophrenia leaves so many of us tragically divided against ourselves. On the one hand, we proudly profess certain sublime and noble principles, but on the other hand, we sadly practice the very antithesis of those principles.”

Martin Luther King, Jr. knew about vices. Those who knew

and loved him best tried to shield his reputation from his private failings, but make no mistake, he was human – a man.

Martin was also a Christian who rested on his faith in God. He knew he was forgiven. This is the beauty of the gospel message; no matter what we have done, we may plead forgiveness at the throne of grace and find it. Still, I wonder if Martin-theman could forgive the incorrigibility of Henry Loeb whose antipathy for striking sanitation workers drove MLK to Memphis and into the sights of James Earl Ray, thereby robbing his children of their father.

Dr. King wrote, “Love and forgiveness are absolute necessities for spiritual maturity.”

Forgiveness is a thoughtful choice that has a cost. MLK proved over time that he was willing to make that choice. In his efforts to reconcile people and groups he was accused of having a Messiah complex – something he flatly denied. In actuality, his sincerity and conscientiousness made him accessible to many people who put him on a pedestal he knew he didn’t deserve. So it is with us.

No man or woman is immune to temptation or sin.

www.fsbfinancial.com How do we reconcile our actions with our words? I look at Dr. King. He was a hero and a hypocrite, just like me. I strive to do what is right but sometimes my love muscle falters and I resort to anger. Sometimes my desire to give is overshadowed by my longing to receive.

Sometimes I grieve the people I profess to love most with selfish ambition and then cling to bitterness when they can’t forgive me. But if I have learned anything from Dr. King, it is that forgiveness comes in all shapes, sizes, and colors, and it is always accessible at the cross. St. Charles Farmer Wins National Award in Soybean Yield Contest Wes Willbrand of St. Charles was recently honored for being among the nation’s highest-producing soybean farmers of his region in the 2018 Asgrow National Yield Contest. Willbrand captured the award with an impressive yield of 95.61 bushels per acre with Asgrow AG36X6 Brand.

“Congratulations to Wes on his outstanding achievement,” said Pete Uitenbroek, U.S. DEKALB, Asgrow and Deltapine Market Lead. “It’s exciting to see farmers push yield boundaries through a winning combination of hard work, management skills and exclusive genetics.”

Play Street Museum celebrates grand opening with ribbon cutting Owners Kellie Geraghty and Nicole Simon celebrated the grand opening of their new business – Play Street Museum, with a ribbon cutting on Friday, March 22, 2019.

Joining Geraghty and Simon were city of St. Charles Mayor Sally Faith along with city staff and members of the city council, Play Street Museum staff, family members, board members and ambassadors with the Greater St. Charles County Chamber of Commerce.

Play Street Museum is located at 1650 Beale Street, Suite 138 in the Streets of St. Charles (next to Mission Taco). This unique museum, geared toward kids ages one through eight, features exhibits and activities that build educational curriculum into everyday play and cultivate a child’s growing confidence and autonomy.

“Because Play Street is a small-scale museum, it makes it easier for young children to explore on their own, giving them a greater sense of independence,” explained Simon. “Kids are able to figure out things on their own instead of having their parents hover around them all the time.”

The U.S. Department of Education has announced that seniors Arianna Chaves (Francis Howell North), Stephanie Monson (Francis Howell Central), and David Yang (Francis Howell) have been named candidates in the 2019 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. The 4,500 candidates from across the country were selected out of nearly 3.6 million students expected to graduate from U.S. high schools this year.

Inclusion in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, now in its 54th year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors.

Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities.

A distinguished panel of educators will review these submissions and select 600 semifinalists in early April. The Commission on Presidential Scholars, a group of up to 32 eminent citizens appointed by the President, will select the

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 by Executive Order of the President to recognize some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors for their accomplishments in many areas: academic success, leadership, and service to school and community. It was expanded in 1979 to recognize students demonstrating exceptional scholarship and talent in the visual, creative, and performing arts. In 2015, the program was expanded once again to recog-

nize students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical fields. Annually, up to 161 U.S. Presidential Scholars are chosen from among that year’s senior class, representing excellence in education and the promise of greatness in America’s youth.

All Scholars are invited to Washington, DC in June for the National Recognition Program, featuring various events and enrichment activities and culminating in the presentation of the Presidential Scholars Medallion during a White House-sponsored ceremony.

East and West high schools named to prestigious PLTW list

East High and West High have been recognized as Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Distinguished Schools, among only 15 in Missouri. Project Lead the Way is a national curriculum in place at all Fort Zumwalt high schools that offers students handson learning in biomedical science, engineering and computer science.

Participating students have the opportunity to earn college credit while in high school. PLTW recognizes Distinguished Schools for their commitment to increasing student access, engagement, and achievement in their PLTW programs. In all, seven of Missouri’s PLTW Distinguished Schools are in St. Charles County.

Zumwalt students make up one-fifth of SLSO’s Top 100 artists Each St. Louis Symphony Volunteer Association is flooded with submissions to their Picture the Music contest. Young artists grades K - 6 have the opportunity to listen to the selected piece and create a piece of art that tells the story they hear. From these hundreds of pieces, the Top 100 are selected and the artists are recognized at Powell Hall downtown.

This year, as in so many, Fort Zumwalt’s young artists stood out. Of the Top 100, 20 are Fort Zumwalt students. Owen Curtis, a third-grader at Dardenne Elementary and Kylee Burton, a kindergartner at Emge Elementary, each won the Symphony Award, the second-highest recognition in their category.

Timberland Student Council elected as state president The Timberland High School Student Council (STUCO) has been elected President of the Missouri Association of Student Councils (MASC) for the 20192020 school year, the highest honor a council can receive in the state. MASC’s mission is to provide programs and resources that develop positive student leaders and advisors who will promote a quality school and community environment.

Nearly 1,000 student leaders from across Missouri attended the 2019 State Convention at Lindbergh High School in St. Louis March 7-9.

During the annual spring convention, schools campaign for office for the following school year, and use skits, election presentations, and creative campaign materials to garner votes from other student councils. that the group has secured the top office in the state. As state president, Timberland students are now responsible to host the MASC Convention in March of 2020.

Timberland STUCO students had to decide to run for the state office months ago, according to THS STUCO Advisor Jim Andrzejewski. Their election campaign included putting together a video that highlights

the council’s many accomplishments.

“Winning this position is a testament to the level of respect Timberland Student Council has around the entire state,” said Andrzejewski. “We have waited a long time for this, and I couldn’t be happier to have such an opportunity to showcase our school, district and community to the entire state of Missouri. ”

Rascals getting new catchers for 2019 season The River City Rascals, your professional baseball team, play in the Western Division of the Frontier League and play their home games at the CarShield Field in O’Fallon.

The team will see a changing of the guard behind the plate in this season. Veterans Josh Ludy and Mike Jurgella have manned the backstop position for the last few seasons, but a new crop of players will compete for the starting job this spring. Last year’s primary back-ups Gage West and James Morisano will be in the mix to take on the starting role.

West hit .239 with nine RBIs in 29 games as a rookie in 2018, highlighted by a four-hit, three RBI performance against the Evansville Otters on July 29. The Tallahassee, Florida native joined the team in June after graduating from Faulker University in Montgomery, Alabama. The 23-year old hit .326 with six home runs and 52 RBIs as a senior, helping lead the Eagles to the NAIA World Series. West started his collegiate career at Florida State.

Women dominate in softball at Lindenwood Lindenwood University softball squad swept Pittsburg State at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles in a pair of close games.

The Lions won the opener 3-0 and the second game 4-1. Stormee Galka started both games in the circle, throwing a total of 12 innings with eight strikeouts against the Gorillas. Lindenwood rises to 19-13 overall and 8-10 in conference play.

Highlights: - In the opener, Austine Pauley led the Lions offense, going 2-3 with a double, a triple and a pair of runs scored.

- Stormee Galka and Taylor Bushman hit first and second, respectively with each player garnering a steal in the game.

- Galka threw the complete game shutout, allowing five hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

- In game two, Courtney Klosinski was 2-2 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. - Becca Stocker entered the game in the top of the sixth as a defensive sub and she then came to bat in the bottom of the inning and responded with a two-run single.

- Pauley was 1-3 with a triple in the game.

- Sam Dean went 1-3 with the eventual game-winning double, a run scored and an RBI. - Galka started the second game as well, throwing five innings with three hits, three strikeouts and one walk and she allowed one earned run against the Gorillas.

- Marina Esparza got the win in game two, allowing a hit and striking out two in 2.0 IP. ~~~Happy times on the softball field Gary Baute, a St. Louis native, may be educated in business but he lives and breathes sports. Box office success ‘Unplanned’ generates controversy, debate

Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

ure Flix Entertainment, a studio known for releasing faith-based such as “God’s Not Dead,” has an unexpected box office success in “Unplanned.” Based on the experiences of Abby Johnson, who had been one of the youngest Planned Parenthood clinic directors, the film contains graphic scenes showing an abortion and earned an “R” rating as a result.

Abortion is a hot-button topic and people are strongly divided over this medical procedure.

Some notable Hollywood films have covered the topic of abortion before “Unplanned.”

In 1982’s “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” for instance, Stacy (Jennifer Jason Leigh) becomes pregnant after an encounter with the fast-talking Mike Damone (Robert Romanus). The young man promises to drive her to the clinic and pay for part of the procedure, but he never follows through. The abortion sequences are somewhat downplayed here.

A pre- “Spider-Man” Tobey Maguire was front-and-center in “The Cider House Rules,” which was based on the novel by John Irving.

Maguire played Homer Wells, a young orphan trained in obstetrics even though he never went to high school. His mentor, Dr. Wilbur Larch (Michael Caine), also teaches him how to perform abortions, even though Homer is not in favor of them. When he travels out into the world, his skills and ethics

Actress Ellen Page starred in 2007’s “Juno,” the story of an unplanned pregnancy. Page plays the title role, a teenager who becomes pregnant by one of her friends. She goes to a clinic for an abortion but changes her mind once she gets there. “Juno” is considered a coming-of-age comedy, but it has serious overtones. It focuses more on alternatives to abortion such as adoption.

“Dirty Dancing,” a very successful comingof-age film, contains a subplot featuring dancer Penny Johnson (Cynthia Rhodes). While working at a resort in 1963, Penny discovers she is pregnant by one of the wait staff and

wants to get an abortion. Baby Houseman (Jennifer Grey) borrows money from her physician father (Jerry Orbach) for the procedure, but Penny is injured during the abortion but Dr. Houseman steps in to help her.

“Unplanned” is the latest film about abortion and has stirred up some controversy and debate. Apparently, the social media network Twitter, which normally welcomes movie promotion, temporarily shut down the film’s account. Unlike some of its predecessors, this film is more intense and graphic when it comes to the actual procedure. With strong voices on both sides, the debate and controversy is sure to continue.

Moore On Life Fast foodie connoisseurs in Australia aren’t laughing it up as hoped after an April fool’s joke turned sour – sour as the pickle burger the restaurant promised, which turned out to be an attempt at light-hearted fun.

McDairyKing offered a sandwich stuffed mile high with pickles, cheese and ketchup then sent the picture out to the Twitter-sphere on April 1. That should have been clue number one. The executives sat back to hear the laughter and applause and pat themselves on the back. The laughter and applause soon fell silent. And the only thing they felt in their backs was the sharp end of a silly gag that fell as flat as the pickle slices.

First came the hopeful tweets:

• My life had no meaning. The future looked dismal. And then a glimmer of hope—the McPickle burger was created. McDairyKing, you saved my life.

• Our vegetarian dinners were a mish-mash of boring meatless meals: tofu, kale casserole along with the occasional bean sprout burrito. The evening supper looked dark and depressing but, the promise of pickle sandwiches saved our monotonous dull routine. Happy dancin’ in our kitchen!

• Ever since mad cow disease hit the newsstands with tales of people’s brains turning into cowpie mush after eating meat, I’ve never touched a burger. Thanks McDairyKing for bringing me

out of a bleak existence.

• But soon the gig was up. The curtain lifted on the hoax and it did not tickle the giggle bones of the receivers one bit. Nay, they were as fuming mad as a mad cow with mad cow disease on branding day.

The angry Tweets came out immediately: • The only thing left on my bucket list was to have a pickle burger.

Life no longer has meaning. Darkness is closing in. The end is near.

• Is nothing sacred? My mouth watered for this delicacy only to have my hopes destroyed. Cruel and sadistic!

• Fun suckers…dream dashers! What’s next? I suppose you’ll be telling us there are no unicorns!

Who knew people actually had such a fondness for pickles.

Good thing they cancelled their next prank: Mermaid McNuggets.
