Inspired by Little Free Libraries – a global front-yard book exchange program that numbers 70,000-plus around the world – Masur is sharing her love of the written word by increasing access to books for everyone.

Masur put in place a new Little Free Library at 2451 Willott Rd. in St. Peters (between Discovery Kids and Anthony’s Produce on Jungermann) and was inspired to join the movement to share books in hopes of bringing people together and creating a community of readers.

“I’d see Little Free Library boxes while traveling and enjoyed looking for them when I went somewhere new,” she said. “The one that stands out to me the most was a tiny box wedged between two posts in Montreal, Canada. It held only four or five books at a time, but it was clearly used frequently.”

Masur hosted a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony for her Little Free Library in March and those in attendance were given bookmarks, stickers, refreshments and a book or two to take home.

Masur has thought of everything. A dog hook is installed on the post and dog treats are in the library to help distract canine friends while you browse. Assorted teas in the library are available to enjoy while reading, along with bookmarks. She also installed a solar light in the library for anyone visiting in the evening. And so far, weather permitting, participation has been good.

“It’s very popular on nice days,” Masur said.

“We see a lot more movement, a lot more books moving in and out.”

“This is not in competition with the library.

It’s an addition to it,” Masur said. “We’re all about getting people to read.”

Becca Bates is a teacher’s assistant at Discovery Kids and said that though small in stature, the new addition to the neighborhood has drawn plenty of buzz among the students.

“The kids get really excited about it,” Bates said. “I think it is in an awesome spot. (The location) brings a lot of different people together. It encourages everyone to read.”

Masur grew up in St. Charles and the library is in memory of her mother, Chris Parkton, who was an avid reader.

“She never went anywhere without a book,” she said. “We signed up for the summer reading program every year and that is something my son and myself continue to do.”

“Our Little Free Library doesn’t just belong to us. It belongs to everyone,” Masur said. “Please take books. Please give books, please share books.”

For as long as I can remember, those nonsense words were just the beginning of what could be both hilarious and dreaded.

They were also typically bellowed through our house without warning. “The Jabberwocky” by Lewis Carroll was one of my mother’s favorite poems and has been a very big part of my life.

Mom decided at some point that this poem, in its entirety, was a good parenting tool to be used if my sisters and I were being hateful to each other or arguing. I say the words were sometimes dreaded only because when you are in the heat of battle with that day’s nemesis, a.k.a. one of your siblings, you don’t want your mom coming around and ruining it by trying to make you laugh. It is also possible that she was trying to make us annoyed with her rather than each other.

Sometimes, there really was no reason for the recitation other than her own amusement. No matter the reason for being recited, it was always done loudly and with great animation and joy. The best part was always when the brave hero returned and was met by my mother with an arms thrown wide, head back, eyes closed

type of excitement, literally. Whichever one of us was standing close enough for her to reach, was that “beamish boy” and got those wide arms thrown around them in a huge hug as she finished the last lines.

I really have no idea how often mom actually did this, maybe a few times a year?

Certainly, never enough for it to become expected, and never EVER on command.

I remember not understanding what in the world she was saying, but if we asked her to repeat it or described these crazy words to our friends and asked her to say it for them, she would refuse or act like she had no idea what we were talking about.

In fact, I only remember her reciting it on command one time. It was a few weeks before she passed away when my sister Allison made the request.

Mom had been so sick and often times very confused, but when Allison asked she immediately launched into her favorite nonsense poem with as much gusto as ever. For the minute or two that it took her to get it out she completely changed. Her voice was strong and loud, and we got to glimpse that serious but goofy, joyful passion she always had when it came to these words, head back, closed eyes and all. It was wonderful. The whole thing was so unexpected, and I am sick to this day that

I did not record such a special moment.

A few weeks later at her funeral service, I decided to read “The Jabberwocky” in my tribute to my mom. I was very nervous about getting the words all twisted, and I also wanted to attempt to give the reading half as much life as mom did, so I read it out loud several times to practice.

For some reason, after that it looped in my brain like a broken record for weeks. I thought I was losing my mind. Mom’s Jabberwocky finally quieted, but I think it’s in there for good now.

These wonderful nonsense words, that have become not so nonsense to me, still float into my head for no reason from time to time. Reciting them, whether it is to myself or out loud, has brought me comfort.

“The Jabberwocky” and really anything to do with “Alice in Wonderland,” has always been very special to me, but has taken on much more meaning in the last couple of years. It will forever bring me both joy and sorrow, but I will always love it.

Call for entries for ‘Cityscape or Streetscape’ Art Show and Competition Landscapes are often popular subjects for artists, but beauty can be found in cityscapes and streetscapes, too. Whether you’re an amateur or a professional, St. Peters Cultural Arts Centre is looking for entries for its “Cityscape or Streetscape” Art Show and Competition, which will be on display from May 3-June 24. All works submitted must contain things seen on a street or in a city.

All-inclusive playground will bring ‘Magic’ to Wentzville Despite the chilly weather, more than 60 attendees gathered to commemorate the groundbreaking for Jake’s Field of Dreams Playground in Wentzville. The playground commemorates the too-short life of Jake Vollmer who passed away in 2012 after a battle with muscular dystrophy.

This all-inclusive playground will be located at Wentzville’s Heartland Park at 100 William Dierberg Dr. Construction will start this month, with a grand-opening celebration planned for mid-summer.

Wentzville Mayor Nick Guccione opened the groundbreaking ceremony with several “thank yous,” to the community, board of aldermen and the various local organizations that supported and helped fund this important project. Alderman Matt Swanson was one of the project’s biggest supporters.

Qualifying St. Peters residents may apply for utility franchise tax refund before May 31

City of St. Peters residents who are 62 years and older or those considered totally disabled

by Social Security may be eligible to apply for a refund of their 2017 St. Peters utility franchise tax. This is the amount listed on your 2017 electric and gas bills as “St. Peters tax” and on the cable bills as “franchise fees.”

To be eligible, your maximum 2017 adjusted gross income excluding any taxable Social Security income must not exceed $41,750 if single or $47,700 if married.

If you meet these criteria, stop by the Citizen

Action Center at city hall during regular business hours before May 31 and bring along the following items: • proof of 2017 income • proof of age • 2017 letter of award from Social Security (if disabled) • 2017 electric, gas and cable bills You are eligible for a refund for the months when you were at least 62 years old or considered totally disabled. On the rainy morning of March 26, dignitaries from across the state gathered to celebrate the breaking of ground for construction of the new Wentzville Post Office.

Charley Miller, Gateway District Manager for the U.S. Postal Service, and Wentzville resident addressed the small crowd of people huddled under the tent.

“This new building will be a positive development for the U.S. Postal Service and the Wentzville community as a whole,” said Miller. “The larger building will allow for greater access to the public while better accommodating the increased workflow of our postal carriers.”

The current post office has been in use since 1961 when the population of Wentzville was just under 3,000. Throughout the years, the city of Wentzville grew to the point where the original post office would no longer house Wentzville’s postal workers. Another building was rented about .5 miles from the main post office that provided space for the additional mail and em-

ployees. Today Wentzville’s population is close to 42,000 and the rented property is quickly running out of room. The new building will provide the much needed space for carriers and clerks to once again reside in the same building.

“In Wentzville, we enjoy a way of life that includes the charming characteristics of a small town and the amenities of a dynamic suburban environment. Adding a new post office, which we’ve needed for quite some time, provides another great amenity for our community members,” said Wentzville Mayor Nick Guccione.

Also in attendance was U.S. Congressman from the 3rd District of Missouri Blaine Luetkemeyer who said, “It was a pleasure to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Wentzville Post Office. I am confident that this post office will benefit the entire community for years to come.”

An official ribbon cutting ceremony will take place upon completion of the new post office which is expected to happen in late 2018 or early 2019.

Eligible Wentzville residents can apply for utility tax refunds until May 31 Through May 31, eligible residents can apply for a city utility-tax refund. To be eligible for a refund, you must rent or own your primary residence in the city of Wentzville, be at least 65 years old or considered totally disabled by Social Security, and have a maximum 2017 gross income of $41,740 for a single-person household and $47,700 for a married-couple household. The refund program is based on your total gross income for filing year 2017, social security income is included. These income requirements are set by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and can fluctuate greatly from year to year. Refunds are only available for the months when you lived in Wentzville and were at least 65 years old or considered totally disabled.

The refund amount is a portion of the “City Tax” or “Franchise Tax” listed on your electric, gas and phone bills for 2017. If you haven’t saved your gas or electric stubs, you can contact your local utilities to request a report (please note: CenturyLink does not provide this report).

Holt High School seniors Benjamin Goldstein and Emma Rose and Liberty High School senior Madison McGuire have been selected for the 2018 Missouri Scholars 100, a statewide program that honors 100 of Missouri’s top academic students in the graduating class of 2018. Liberty senior Daryn Adler and Timberland seniors Jack Glendinning and Hayden Mills each received an honorable mention.

Missouri Scholars 100 is a

program sponsored by the Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals. Schools across Missouri are invited to nominate candidates for this state-wide recognition. The selection is based primarily on a formula using the student’s grade point average and ACT or SAT score. Each student nominated had to first meet the criteria of an “Academic Decathlon,” which included ten events, designed to test the academic strength of the student.

Rose has a 4.52 GPA, scored a 35 on her ACT, and is ranked first in her class. Goldstein currently has a GPA of 4.40, scored a 35 on his ACT, is ranked second in his class, and is taking six AP courses. McGuire has a 4.47 GPA, scored a 35 on her ACT, is ranked third in her class and is taking five AP courses.

The students will be honored at a luncheon at the Holiday Inn Executive Center in Columbia, Missouri on April 22.

The Wentzville School District Board of Education has approved the hiring of Katie Brettschneider as principal of Discovery Ridge Elementary School and Colin Hanna as principal of Heritage Primary for the 2018-2019 school year.

Brettschneider, who is currently serving as a principal at Murphy Elementary School in the Northwest School District, replaces Laura Bates who submitted her resignation last month, effective at the close of the school year. Hanna is currently serving as an assistant principal in the Parkway School District and will be replacing Geri Buss who is retiring effective June 30th.

This marks Brettschneider’s 15th year in education. She was an instructional specialist and assistant principal in the Pattonville School District prior to being named principal at Mur-

The Karen Weidinger Foundation (KWF) was founded in 2004 after Karen, a resident of St. Charles lost her battle with breast cancer. Her family and co-workers formed the nonprofit foundation to raise money to go towards a grant for breast cancer patients in St. Charles County.

Their primary fundraiser is the Karen for a Kause 5K Run that is held annually the day before Mother’s Day in Frontier Park. ‘Overboard’ and other questionable remakes

Imitation, as the old saying goes, is the sincerest form of flattery; but does that sentiment also apply to movies? Instead of creating new and original content, movie studios sometimes remake a beloved classic film for contemporary audiences. In this way, actors and actresses take on iconic roles while hopefully attracting new fans and those who loved the original piece.

On May 3, Anna Faris and Eugenio Derbez will star in “Overboard,” a remake of the classic 1987 comedy directed by Garry Marshall. In the original, Goldie Hawn stars as Joanna Stayton, a spoiled rich woman who falls off her yacht and washes ashore. Kurt Russell plays Dean Proffitt, a carpenter that Joanna refuses to pay for his work. Dean takes advantage of Joanna’s amnesia to get payback but ends up falling in love with her instead.

Thirty years later, the original “Overboard” still holds up well, making semi-regular appearances on cable channels. The 2018 remake switches the gender roles around, though. Faris is a single mom cheated by Derbez’s character after she cleans his yacht. When he falls overboard, she convinces the wealthy amnesiac that she is his wife. The rich guy becomes nicer and the hardworking mom sees him in a new light.

Remakes like this are a risky proposition and sometimes cause fan backlash. The 2016 reboot of the “Ghostbusters” franchise even became a cautionary tale about messing with classic films. Despite the presence of four talented comediennes (Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy,

Brand is a funny guy, but no one can touch a role that’s owned by Dudley Moore. Reviews were mixed, with some writers liking Brand’s style while other calling the whole project unnecessary. Mirren and Gerwig, who recently received Oscar nominations for her work on “Ladybird,” each added life and color to the story, but they were simply not enough to keep it afloat.

With all this in mind, what are the odds for the new “Overboard”? Anna Faris is a lovely actress with proven comedic talent who also stars in the popular CBS sitcom “Mom.” Eugenio Derbez is an acclaimed comic actor and director from Mexico. With their fanbases and a good script, this one could stay afloat at the box office for some time, but a backlash could sink the ship.

Eggs-traordinary circumstances The first two weeks of April were eventful with peculiar dates. First of all, Easter was smashed right on top of April Fool’s Day. I’m sure families all across America enjoyed pranking one another. I can imagine unboiled eggs were handed out and parents were laughing it up as their children cracked the raw chicken by-products on top of their heads only for the kids to find the yolk was on them. (See how I did that? Clever huh?! You’re welcome. That’s what I get paid for.)

Then the Easter Bunny handed out jelly beans.

Yup you guessed it, the infamous brown squishy ones not associated with chocolate, which we’ve been warned never to accept from him and certainly to never eat. You know he’s been waiting decades for the planets to line up and the calendar to match April Fool’s day so he could pull that one off and officially get away with it. And the kids, not to be outdone, purposely hid a couple of eggs outside left to slowly ferment in the heat. Dad will get a smelly surprise around the time of his first lawn mowing – payback for those raw eggs. (Unfortunately, there will be no payback for my horrendous joke, but possibly no paycheck either.)

While these shenanigans were going on, yet another strange combination occurred. Friday the 13th came right on the heels of April 15 this month. Two days before the big money heist. Coincidence…I think not!

Which is scarier, Friday the 13th or tax day? I don’t know. Friday the 13th conjures up all sorts of voo-doo bad luck and zombie apocalypse kinds of eerie happenings, while the IRS conjures up voodoo bad luck with those zombies wearing black suits and dark sunglasses slapping on foreclosures, property confiscation, handcuffs and prison time.

It. Really. Sucks. Which coincidentally, just hap-

pens to be the actual acronym for the letters of that dreaded institution.

So how about we all have a whole lotta fun this month and mix up a little Easter hooliganism along with some April foolery and mix in a batch of Friday the 13th voo-doo-ery for the tax people.

Let’s all send in truckloads of 500 brightly colored eggs and inform the IRS that 499 are raw and only one is the goose’s golden egg which holds the tax check due.

You can bet cracking all those eggs will make the egg crackers cranky, so we’ll send along a recipe for omelets and tell them breakfast is on us.

The side order of squishy brown jelly beans is for dessert.
