Yearly, only six educators across the nation receive the Kennedy Center/ Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Teacher Award and one of them walks among its halls.

Central High School journalism teacher Matthew Schott is one of those six. This award recognizes individuals who have had

a major impact on the lives of their students outside of academia.

The award is titled after Stephen Sondheim, a decorated lyricist, who cites Oscar Hammerstein (of Rodgers and Hammerstein) for his success. Winners are nominated by former students and are awarded $10,000 in appreciation for their contributions to the field of teaching. Awardees are also posted on the Kennedy Center’s website.

Schott got the phone call to tell him he won while on spring break. He had to quell

his enthusiasm as he and his family were in a crowded restaurant in Alabama.

“Stunned is the right word,” he said. “When I told my wife about it she was like, ‘Why aren’t you jumping up and down?’ I didn’t know how to react. I had won awards previously but not nationally and definitely not with a monetary attachment. It’s immensely flattering” Schott was nominated by Lindsay Schallon, a former Howell Central student who called See’INSPIRING’ page 2

There is no denying that the subjects and the studies of what teachers do is important, but Schott also leans toward how he treats students and the memories made for them is just as important and vital as they head out into society.

“I think it is easy for teachers to get caught up in the curriculum, and the ACT and college,” Schott said. “Yes, obviously, ed-

ucation is important. But if the student can’t focus or is close to breaking down, sometimes they just need 30 minutes.”

Schott’s room is a place where students want to be, where they can be who they are.

“I want to create a place where they can take risks and know that I and other teachers care about them,” he said. “You see (the students) come in quiet and leave two years later having the biggest personality in the room.”

Letter to the Editor To the editor, Well here it is … in just a few days I will no longer be an alderman for the city of St. Peters. After serving for 30 years, my retirement happens on April 25, at 6:30 p.m., at the St, Peters Justice Center. I loved doing this and I hope I pleased you.

We moved to St. Peters in 1982 when we had about 18,000 residents – now we have 58,000. I said many times that being an alderman has been good for me and I hope I have been good for St. Peters. Thank you all for your support – in one race, when there were three of us on the ballot for Ward 4; I received 82 percent of the vote. Folks, you just can’t do any better than that.

The 370 area is under development now and I think you will be pleased with the tax base this area will continue to bring to the city. I worked long and hard with our recycling efforts and our city has a nice nest egg for future expansion. Last year we sold $780,000 of recyclables – all that money went into the recycle account. If you take into account the weight of articles that were sold, instead of earning $780,000, we would have paid one and a half cents per pound to the land fill. That difference would have meant increased trash pick costs for our residents. So you can see that the recycling pays off. No matter where you live you can use our containers.

I could go on and on with stories that happened, but I just want to thank everyone for the support they have given me through the years. I have always been proud to say that I was an alderman for the city of St. Peters. God has already blessed us by letting us live in St. Peters. So thank you again.

I have been told that after my retirement the St. Peters Recycle Center will be renamed the Aytes Community Recycling Center.

“And that is who Matt is,” Arnel said. “He has an incredible passion for making education relevant and that’s something students build on to make their lives richer as a result.”

Schott spent eight years in journalism, working primarily as a graphic designer before he segued from the grind of working nights at a desk to early morning in front of a classroom full of kids.

“I had thought about (teaching) in college and even when I was working in journalism I was around a lot of educators,” he said. “I was getting close to 30-years-old and was looking to have a bit of a life outside of my job. At the time, when everybody was coming home from work, I was just going.”

journalism in 2019 isn’t what it used to be. There are much more Schott and his students oversee than the school paper, such as the yearbook, websites, broadcasts (including podcasts) and a literary magazine.

“I want them to be well-rounded and have the kids capitalize on their interests and passions,” he said. “They are a little bit more natural at doing a lot of this.

They are already used to sharing photos and videos. I want to give them opportunities to learn and try new things. For example, we started doing a podcast and some jumped in and others were hesitant and needed a little push. But I won’t push them too far out of their comfort zone.”

In retrospect, Schott doesn’t consider himself a master educator or a shining example.

“I don’t think what I do is super special or amazing,” he said.

“I just try to do what a good person or a good educator would do.”

Headliners announced for O’Fallon’s 2019 Heritage & Freedom Fest Headline bands for O’Fallon’s Heritage & Freedom Fest were announced at the March 28 O’Fallon City Council meeting. This year’s starring performers are rock n’ roll legends Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo, on tour celebrating their 40th anniversary, with opening act Gabby Barrett on July 4, and country music star Walker Hayes with opening acts Noah Guthrie and Missouri-native Filmore on July 3.

The 2019 Heritage & Freedom Fest will be held at the Ozzie Smith Sports Complex at 900 T. R. Hughes Boulevard in O’Fallon.

“Once again, the O’Fallon City Council and I are proud to bring nationally-known entertainers to the main stage for our community to see and hear live at our city’s biggest, most patriotic party of the year, the Heritage & Freedom Fest,” said O’Fallon’s Mayor, Bill Hennessy. “The concerts are free, the bands are outstanding, and we’ll end each show

with spectacular fireworks displays.”

O’Fallon’s Heritage & Freedom Fest kicks off on July 2, featuring a new carnival, a colorful midway, family-friendly sideshows and other activities from 4–10 p.m. (There will be no fireworks or main stage music on Tuesday.) Carnival rides, the midway and festival food and merchandise vendors will be open for business throughout the festival over all three festival dates, July 2-4.

On July 3 (4-11 p.m.) and July 4 (noon to 10 p.m.), the festival will get into full party mode with free concerts, fireworks and free kids’ and family-friendly activities. On Independence Day at 9:30 a.m., O’Fallon’s Heritage & Freedom Fest Parade, which is one of the biggest in the area, will step off from Main and Third streets and proceed north to Tom Ginnever Avenue, continue east on Tom Ginnever and end at T.R. Hughes Boulevard near the festival entrance.

Inspiration Corner: Killing the “die” in diet There is a diet for every day of the year. Be it a pill, a gluten free option, or simple carb-restrictions, we sort through weight-loss regimens like a dealer shuffles cards. We pick one that most closely aligns with the hand we are holding and then try to play our hand. Candidly, I’m pretty good at folding.

Everybody loves a success story but few people are willing to put in the effort required to produce one. When the novelty wears off, we roll our eyes and capitulate. Life is stressful and we like our comfort foods. But I would like to suggest that the reason we fail in this area is not as simple as what we put into our mouths or our level of physical activity. If we truly want to live a healthy lifestyle, we often need a complete mental overhaul.

An honest assessment of our habits is a good place to start. It is not only important to look at what we eat but in what quantity. This is why calorie counting has its benefits. All calories are not the same. I got very good at counting my Taco Bell calories but could not understand why I was not losing weight. A fundamental understanding of nutrition would have been helpful. Fat slows down the digestion of carbohydrates – both of which are in abundance in most fast food menus. Also, I wasn’t waiting until I was truly hungry to eat. I had a habit of eating at certain times of the day. Once I learned what true hunger felt like and practiced the discipline of waiting 30 minutes after I felt it, I began to see serious results. Hunger is a nasty feeling for a glutton (like me) but once I began to

realize that hunger was forcing my body to burn those fat cells, I made peace with it.

Many of us also have a litany of emotional ties that obstruct our weight loss efforts. Be it mom’s special Christmas tree cake around the holidays or the weekly office parties, we have come to associate food with social activities. It’s difficult to get away from sugar, fat and salt laden concoctions that are specifically designed to make us addicted. Worse, friends and family are perfectly willing to shame us into consuming what we know we should not. It takes grit to say no and stick to our plan. This is the real key to sustainable change. Set a goal, work your plan, and don’t cheat. This is ten times more effective than any boot camp class.

Small steps taken over a long period of time will get you where you want to go.

Today, if you have lost all hope for ever reaching your weight loss goal, don’t lose heart! We all live one day at a time. Focus on changes you can make today and accept that you are running a marathon, not a sprint. For more inspiration, follow my blog: www.destinationdiscipline.com.

Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Charles County partners with Positive Action, Inc. Positive Action, Inc. has partnered with Boys & Girls Clubs of America. With support from the Department of Justice – Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, the two organizations are working together to provide effective mentoring opportunities for our nation’s youth.

Grant funding has resulted in the Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Charles County to engage in this new effort with members age 6-18.

This partnership results from more than a decade of favorable results that local clubs have had using Positive Action, in a variety of communities.

It is an unprecedented opportunity for youth nationwide to pursue meaningful learning opportunities outside the classroom, in a supervised manner.

Positive Action is an education program that has been implemented in thousands of schools, as well as by community organizations and in many other settings.

In St. Charles County there are two Boys & Girls

Clubs units, one in St. Charles and one in O’Fallon. The Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Charles County have provided support to members for over 60 years.

“We are proud to offer this new programming to our members, including adding exceptional staff.

Mr. Rick Daleen, a police offer, joined our team earlier this year and brings valuable insight and experience to Positive Action here at the clubs,” shared Patrick Pryor, board president for the Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Charles County.

The mentoring project is an important first step in a concerted effort to provide additional meaningful afterschool opportunities for students. Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Charles County provide a safe and supervised environment for youth to explore academic and personal interests outside the traditional school classroom.

O’Day Park grand opening offers public a chance to experience the park’s features Everyone is invited to celebrate the grand opening of the new 57-acre O’Day Park on Saturday, April 27, at 3 p.m. Guests are encouraged to explore O’Day’s unique features, including the Adventure Playground and O’Day Lodge, sample food from the lodge’s preferred caterers, and will have an opportunity to win park-related prizes.

WSD Board of Education approves hiring of new principal for Heritage Primary The Wentzville School District Board of Education has approved the hiring of Megan Sutton as principal of Heritage Primary for the 2019-2020 school year. Sutton, who had been serving as an assistant principal for the last three years at Crossroads Elementary, was named interim principal at Heritage Primary in January following a resignation.

Prior to becoming an administrator, Sutton taught kindergarten at Heritage Primary for 10 years where she earned Teacher of the Year in 2015-2016.

Timberland junior earns state award for outstanding achievement in citizenship Timberland High School junior Olivia Riek has received the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) 2019 Missouri Award for Outstanding Achievement in Citizenship, which is reserved for those who demonstrate high academic achievement, extracurricular leadership and community service. She was honored at a special awards luncheon on April 3, in Jefferson City, Missouri, where she received a plaque and recognition from the Missouri State Board of Education and Missouri Bar. “Olivia is a disciplined and focused student who has a sincere desire to better herself and those around her,” said Sean Elfrink, social studies teacher at Timberland. “She’s doing good things because she thinks it is the right thing to do, not just because she’s trying to build a resume for a college scholarship. She’s just genuine and sincere.”

Olivia views her service-driven mentality as repaying the community for what it has given to her.

“Giving back to the community you take from is vital,” she said. “In order to have a prosperous society and achieve visible growth in the place you live in, it is essential to give back. In a community, you are always taking, whether consciously or not. Giving back provides countless, intangible rewards including the great satisfaction received.”

Community service has quickly become a hallmark for Olivia. She has volunteered for TREE House of Greater St. Louis for three years, helping kids with paraplegia and other disabilities ride horses for therapeutic reasons. But it’s not just a summer hobby; Olivia volunteers there weekly, all year-round.

“My experiences at TREE House of Greater STL have inspired me to be a lifelong volunteer to the community I live in,” she said.

She also gives her time to KEEN Sports, where she also helps kids with disabilities, and to Wentzville Christian Church, helping them with their STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) Camp.

also named as a leadership delegate for the Timberland Chapter of DECA. She has served as a class officer, as well, for all three years and she is currently planning the school’s prom. Additionally, Olivia was selected by the school’s administration to represent her school at a recent Gateway2Change summit, a place to talk about social justice issues in a safe and accepting environment. She’s also been involved with Youth and Government, traveling to Jefferson City to represent the Timberland delegation in the Senate, and was chosen by Cuivre River Electric Cooperation to attend the Cooperative Youth Conference and Leadership Experience (CYCLE).

“My experiences there furthered my leadership abilities and interest in politics,” she said.

Olivia wants to attend college, but isn’t exactly sure where and what, possibly majoring in marketing or attending law school - perhaps even pursuing that career in politics.

Timberland junior wins second place in University of Missouri music competition Timberland junior Adam Routt has won second place in the High School Jazz Division of the 2019 Creating Original Music Project at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Routt’s musical composition, “Rad World,” will be performed during the Senior Division recital at the 2019 Creating Original Music Project Festival on April 13 at the University of Missouri in Columbia.

Routt is currently enrolled in three Advanced Placement (AP) courses: AP Music Theory, AP Physics I, and AP Calculus. He is in the improv group at Timberland, and hopes to be involved in the theater department next year. Routt plays the piano, guitar, and takes vocal lessons. He has been composing music for the last five years.

“For me, it’s about trying to put ideas I’ve had in the past into the music, and trying to hear what comes next,” shared

Routt. “There’s a lot of trial and error.”

“I am very pleased that Adam took it upon himself to enter this competition,” said Ronda Fields, Timberland Choir Director. “He is an excellent musician and has a rare understanding of music for his age. I’m glad that he has won this honor because he deserves it.”

Routt’s composition, “Rad World,” will also be performed on May 10 by the Timberland Jazz Band, under the direction of Matthew Hayes, at the Spring Band Concert.

In recognition of his musical achievement, Routt will be awarded a $750 prize, and Timberland High School will also receive $750. In addition, he will receive a scholarship to attend the 2019 Missouri Summer Composition Institute June 16-22, at the University of Missouri in Columbia.

Bryan Middle School teacher wins National LifeChanger of the Year Award Bryan Middle School teacher Aaron Pearson has been named a 2018-19 LifeChanger Award winner by the National Life Group. A Spectra teacher who works with students in the district’s gifted program, Pearson was presented with the award at a surprise school-wide assembly.

“This award means a lot to me,” said Pearson.

“It was great having my students, former students, and family all here. Hearing how I’ve impacted them just makes it all worthwhile, it’s why I do what I do. I love my job and my students, it just brings a big smile to my face.”

The award includes a $1,500 individual cash award and a $1,500 donation to the school from National Life Group.

Pearson was nominated for the award by his students for his continuing support and for creating an inviting and stimulating classroom environment.

“Before I came to his class, I was shy in public and didn’t feel needed,” one of his nominators said. “He showed us that it’s okay to be ourselves and that we are perfect just the way we are.”

Rascals get new president The Rascals your professional baseball team, play in the Western Division of the Frontier League and play their home games at the CarShield Field in O’Fallon.

The new baseball year has produced a new president for the club. After seven years serving as team president, Dan Dial is stepping down from his role with the Rascals. Dial has been responsible for the day-to-day oversight of the business operations that include ticket and corporate sales, marketing, promotions, stadium and concession operations, and communication with city officials.

Rascals GM David Schmoll and the rest of the front office personnel will now handle those responsibilities.

“I would like to thank the Rascals ownership for their support over the last seven years as we worked to improve the long-term outlook of the organization and make major improvements to CarShield Field. Although there is still much to be done, I feel the Rascals have an excellent staff in place and the 2019 season will be a great success for the team and our fans,” said Dial. “I would also like to thank all of our corporate partners, season ticket holders, players and coaches, and city officials who have supported the organization during my time in O’Fallon. This is a fantastic community and the Rascals are a crowning jewel for summer time family entertainment.”

Bleuler owns a 17-7 record at No. 1 singles and posted a 4-1 mark in GLVC play. In doubles, she is 19-3, including 17-2 at No. 2 with freshman Odette Beagrie. The duo were 5-0 in league play.

She has 78 career singles wins, which ranks second all-time in program history. She needs one win to tie Natalia Carvalhais for the record.

Prediger, ranked No. 40 nationally in the Oracle/ITA DII Singles Rankings, is 21-5, playing at No. 2. She finished with a 5-1 record in GLVC matches and is on an eight-match win streak. In doubles, she is 18-6, including 16-3 with sophomore Leticia Lunge. The duo, ranked No. 23 nationally in DII, is 16-3, and went 4-1 in the conference.

Lunge was also one of 13 student-athletes honored as someone who has distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. For the Walt Disney Corporation, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ is not the end

he anticipation for “Avengers: Endgame” is reaching new heights, with sibling directors Anthony and Joseph Russo encouraging viewers not to spoil the movie’s ending for other fans. As the Wrap points out, early box office estimates put the film’s opening weekend take at $265 million. This film is the 22nd release in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and some theater chains are hosting marathon showings of all the movies.

It’s safe to say that “Avengers: Endgame” will remain in theaters long after opening weekend, but Disney has other things scheduled for 2019. On May 24, for instance, the live-action adaptation of “Aladdin” arrives in theaters.

Like “Beauty and the Beast” before it, this Disney classic was part of their 1990’s animation renaissance and featured Robin Williams as the fast-talking Genie. In the current adaptation, that role falls to actor Will Smith.

Arguably, few Disney franchises tug the heartstrings quite like “Toy Story.” Released in 1995, Pixar Animation Studios broke new ground with a computer-animated tale about the secret lives of children’s toys. At the end of “Toy Story 3,” Andy, now heading for college,

office, racking up over a billion dollars in ticket sales. The story focuses on two princesses, Anna (Kristen Bell) and Elsa (Idina Menzel), who live in the kingdom of Arendelle.

Elsa has power over ice and snow, an ability that her parents sought to suppress. She learns to accept and control her powers, however, as an adult. “Frozen 2,” opening Nov. 22, promises a new adventure outside Arendelle.

Rey has more challenges ahead in the new Jon Favreau, who directed the original “Iron film, including another confrontation with Man” movie and 2016’s “Jungle Book,” will Kylo Ren (Adam Driver).

With this kind of lineup, Disney doesn’t direct Simba and his friends in a live-action adaptation. Favreau has the luxury of a great need an Infinity Gauntlet to control the cincast, including Beyoncé, Donald Glover and ematic universe. Their streaming service even the original Mufasa himself, James Earl also set to start later this year, so the House of Mouse definitely is going to have a reJones. The new adaptation opens July 19.

‘Yeggs’ is a comic series about Robert and Bill, two rabbits who have opened their own egg franchise in the Midwest (St. Louis area). We follow their day to day lives, watching as they go about the hectic task of preparing for their one big day every year. Moore On Life It was National Pet Day this month…or as my cats like to refer to it, every day.

“Hey, boys! Where are you?

I announced. It’s National Pet Day! What say we celebrate?”

My cats were neither impressed nor amused by this proclamation.

The fat one stopped midlick then stared at me aghast like I had mistakenly offered him a dog bone. He scoffed then said, “Insulting! Every day is National Pet Day. The only correction is that it should be National ‘Me’ Day. Now go fill my kibble bowl. It’s half-empty and it vexes me greatly.”

I dutifully ran to refill the little lord’s bowl. On the way I ran into the other one…literally. He dashed between my legs and I stumbled nearly throwing out a hip.

“There you are. Hey, guess what day it is?” I said pulling myself up by the table’s edge.

He gave me a snarl then said, “Your lucky day I’d say. Next time I’ll make sure there isn’t furniture nearby.”

“I’d say you purposely tried to kill me, but you’re so freaking furry and cute I know that would never happen,” I panted. “It’s National Pet Day. How about a belly rub?”

He plopped down and assumed the position.

I vigorously rubbed until he was a ball of purring delight. Suddenly, his inner demon took hold and without warning the long knives came out and he clawed me a good one.

“Hey, what was that all about?”

“You went past the prescribed rubbings. Six vigorous belly rubs is permitted, anything beyond that is strictly forbidden. It’s in the rule book. Get yourself a copy and read it.”

I corralled them into the kitchen and tore open a new packet of treats called, Pacific Ocean Salmon au juice. Of course they’d love it. It was from one of those pricey cat boutiques that specialize in kitty gifts and taking advantage of the slow-witted.

The fat one took a nibble then tossed up a fur ball while the other one turned his nose and hissed.
