By Brett Auten According to the American Red Cross, every day, seven people die in home fires, most in homes that lack working smoke alarms.

To combat that statistic, the St. Charles City Fire Department has partnered with the American Red Cross for the Sound the Alarm, a smoke detector installation event.

Sound the Alarm is a series of home fire safety and smoke alarm installation events across the country The event will take place on Saturday and the St. Charles City Fire Department will be targeting one area in each of its stations’ first due areas (an area in which a company is expected to be the first to arrive on a fire scene) to install detectors.

“We have established a target of 200 smoke detectors for this event,” St. Charles Fire Department Public Information Officer Kelly Hunsel said. “If this target is met, there will be 200 families that will sleep safer in our community that night.”

The neighborhoods included are Deerfield, Elm Point, Fox Run, and Town West mobile home parks as well as St. Charles Heights in the Frenchtown area. Crews will work with Red Cross personnel, CERT, and volunteers to install the smoke detectors. The time for the event is 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

The weeks and days before the event, on-duty crews were out and about placing door hangers in the targeted areas with information on how to request a smoke detector.

Hunsel grew up in St. Charles. In fact, her engine house is on the same street where she

grew up. She has been with the department for 13 years, spending four years as a captain before segueing into her current role as a public information officer. According to Hunsel, the Red Cross approached the St. Charles City Fire Department to partner with them on this event because it has been successfully working with them when it came to installing smoke detectors per the Red Cross’ requests.

“We will install a maximum of three smoke detectors per house because we feel that will give good coverage throughout the home,” Hunsel said. “Each detector will have a 10year battery that you cannot take out and

reinstall. We have had many calls where the smoke detector either didn’t work or because there weren’t any batteries in them.”

St. Charles City and St. Louis County are both taking part in the Sound the Alarm program.

“This is our first time participating in the Sound the Alarm program,” Hunsel said.

“We were supposed to last fall, but the hurricanes had the Red Cross tied up doing other things.”

Using the same specialized equipment that arborists and scientists use when they ascend into the treetops, expert instructors will teach climbers how to ascend into the certified,

mature tree with broad canopies using special ropes and other safety equipment.

The adventure begins with an orientation and ground school where climbers are fitted with personal safety equipment consisting of a tree climb saddle and climbing helmet. After participants are geared up and

trained, they use the remaining time to practice climbing and exploring the tree.

Cost of the program is $35 per climber for a two-hour session.

A grandmother’s influence started in the kitchen

By Troion A. Jackson One thing from childhood that shaped my adult life is my grandmother’s way of cooking. Huglena Dunn always cooks with love and patience.

She takes great pride in her cooking. Through cooking, my grandmother taught me patience.

I always sat with her at the end of the rectangular wooden table under the dim kitchen light, the sunlight through the kitchen window always brightened the room up. The smell of her food ran through her house, kicking down every door. She cooked every Sunday, and she either taught me recipes, how to clean meat or just patience. She learned how to make some of Mississippi’s finest foods from her mother-in-law, Thelma, and passed these recipes down to me.

When first learning to cook, I struggled with patience. I was too excited waiting for

the food to be done. Nervously checking on my dishes, my grandmother’s saying would echo in the back of my mind: “TJ, move away from that stove, baby. How is your food is ever going to get done with you constantly messing all the time?” She would jokingly say, “By the time your food is finished, Jesus would have called me home already.” So, I would distract myself with another activity, like playing a game or talking to a friend.

When I thought of attending cooking school, my grandmother said, “You don’t need nobody to show and tell you how to cook, T.J. Your teacher is right here in front of you and she’s free.”

Grandmother’s Peach Cobbler (with my modifications)

Cobbler Filling 4 cans of sliced peaches (two big cans and two little cans) 1/2 cup of white sugar 1/2 cup of brown sugar 5 small tablespoons of vanilla extract 1 stick of unsalted butter 2 small tablespoons of cinnamon 2 small tablespoons of nutmeg 2 big tablespoons of Caribbean rum

Cobbler crust 2 boxes of Calhoun Bend Mill’s peach cobbler mix. ¾ cup of milk 1 big tablespoon of cinnamon.

1 small tablespoon of nutmeg 1 big tablespoon of Mexican vanilla extract 1 big tablespoon of Caribbean rum 1 stick of unsalted butter, melted Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl. Add butter, rum, and vanilla. While stirring, slowly pour in the milk and ensure the crust is on the thicker side— the entire amount of milk may not be necessary.

Over medium heat, pour the juice from one big and one little can of peaches into a pot.

Add rum, vanilla extract, butter, then stir.

Bring to a boil, add peaches, and stir until soft. Remove from heat.

Starting in the corners, fill a rectangular baking dish with cobbler filling. Starting in the corners, gradually pour crust batter over the peaches. Then, pour ½ of the juice from the remaining peach mix into the pan. Bake cobbler until crust turns a beautiful golden brown. When it’s done, eat it with a scoop of French vanilla ice cream and let it take you to heaven.

Not only was the county recently recognized for the ninth consecutive year as tops in Missouri in the annual County Health Rankings by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, but it ranks among the top 100 Healthy Communities in the U.S. News and World Report released last month. The county ranked 75th out of more than 3,000 counties.

Health Department has three divisions that monitor and work to improve the health and well-being of the county: The Division of Environmental Health & Protection, which inspects and licenses food service retailers and providers, daycare centers, aquatic and recreation facilities, body art facilities and handles mosquito control and natural resource management; The Division of Humane Services, which shelters and adopts animals, educates pet owners, provides animal control services and investigates incidents involving animal cruelty and neglect; and The Division of Health Services, which encompasses programs that include immunizations, education, testing, vital records, and more.

On April 9, Helene Reece, Regent of the Caroline Close Stuart Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), dedicated a tree planted in honor of first responders in the front of the new O’Fallon government building.

One person was injured, and two homes were damaged on April 4 in separate kitchen fires in the St. Peters area. Central County Fire & Rescue (CCFR) responded to a fire on Ridgelawn Dr. at the Ridgewood Apartments that was started by the misuse of a microwave and a fire started by unattended cooking on Willott Square Dr. at the Willott Square Townhomes.

“The kitchen is a dangerous place, many of us forget this when we are cooking every day. Something as simple as an unattended pan on the stove can quickly spread into a roaring fire like we saw yesterday,” says CCFR Chief Dan Aubuchon.

Foil in the microwave started the fire at the Ridgewood Apartments. The blaze at the Willott Square Townhomes began when cooking food was left unattended on the stove. One person was injured in the Willott Square fire; the victim was treated and released from the hospital on April 4.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), which tracks nationwide fire statistics, cooking equipment is the leading cause of home fires and fire injuries.

“Many people injured during these fires are hurt while trying to put them out. If you experience a cooking fire, do not try to extinguish it on your own. Leave the room and close the door, then get everyone out of the house and then call 911,” explains Aubuchon. “The best thing you can do is take the time to prevent this from happening in your home.”

CCFR recommends the following kitchen safety tips: • If you are frying, grilling or broiling food, do not leave the kitchen.

• Keep anything that can catch fire away from the stovetop, and turn it off when you leave the kitchen, even if it’s for a short period.

• Use a timer when simmering, boiling, baking or roasting food and check it often.

• Wear short sleeves, or push up your shirt sleeves, to prevent clothing fires.

• Keep a lid nearby when you’re cooking to smother small grease fires. Slide the lid over the pan and turn off the stovetop. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled.

For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed.

• Establish a three-foot child-free safety zone around any cooking appliances.

• If you have a grease fire, do not use water!

Place a lid over the fire to help extinguish it.

This free event is open to the public and sponsored by the St. Peters Police Department and the U.S. Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Agency. Only prescription drugs will be accepted, no over-the-counter drugs. The dropoff period is strictly from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. – medications cannot be accepted before or after these times.

A potential source of supply for illegal use, unused prescription medications pose an unacceptable risk to public health and safety. The safe disposal of unused medicine eliminates the pos-

sibility of the drugs getting into the wrong hands and causing harm.

All prescription medications will be accepted with no questions asked. To remain anonymous, feel free to remove identifying information from prescription medicine container labels before disposal. Tightly seal the cap on any liquid product, such as cough syrup. Intravenous solutions, injectables and needles will not be accepted. Illegal substances such as marijuana or methamphetamine are not a part of this initiative.

There are many things you can do for a healthy heart — from being active and eating well to knowing your numbers. It’s also important to reduce your stress, be smoke-free and get at least seven hours of sleep every night.

Learn more about how you can keep your heart healthy.

Eat Well

A heart-healthy diet consists of a variety of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. It’s also a diet low in trans fat and sodium to keep your cholesterol levels in check. There are many hearthealthy foods you can incorporate into your diet, including those rich in omega-3s like fish and nuts and fiber-rich foods like oatmeal. Other smart choices include low-fat milk and yogurt, which are great sources of potassium.

Get Moving

Give your heart a workout with cardiovascular exercise.

Walk, run or do another car-

diovascular activity every day. If you’re new to exercise, start slow and gradually increase — you don’t need to overdo it. Walking is a great way to increase your heart rate. Remember to always check with your doctor before beginning a new program.

Know Your Numbers

Blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels can show your risk for heart disease and heart attacks. It’s also good to know your body mass index (BMI). These numbers establish a baseline for your heart health and can indicate areas that need improvement.

Skate, ride and play until midnight at the Youth Activity Park this summer Skate, ride and play the night away at the Youth Activity Park in Dardenne Prairie this summer! The park stays open until midnight, every third Friday in May thru September, so bring your skateboard, scooter, BMX bike and your friends to join in the fun!

Francis Howell announces new chief academic officer The Francis Howell School District has selected Dr. Nathan Hoven as the district’s new chief academic officer, effective July 1. The board of education approved the selection at the March 15 board meeting. Hoven will replace Nicole Whitesell, who has been hired as the Director of the St. Charles County Center for Advanced Professional Studies (CAPS) program.

In his new role as FHSD’s Chief Academic Officer, Hoven will guide instructional improvement and student achievement, as well as oversee professional development, special programs, and student support services.

“I am extremely excited to join the Francis Howell team,” said

Hoven. “The district achieves at a high level, and that is a testament to the great people they have who devote every day to helping students grow. I am honored to join that outstanding group of educators.”

Superintendent Dr. Mary Hendricks-Harris served as the district’s chief academic officer for a decade before being named to her current position in 2016 and understands the rigors and requirements of the job better than anyone.

“I have confidence in Dr. Hoven’s leadership abilities and believe he will be an asset to our district as we focus on our new strategic plan,” said Hendricks-Harris.

The Wentzville School District Ratchet Rockers Robotics Team 1706 placed second among the finalists in the FIRST St. Louis Regional Competition at Chaifetz Arena March 8-10. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), is an innovative program that encourages young people to pursue STEM education and career opportunities. Each year, First Robotics Competition (FRC) teams participate in a sixweek build season that leads them to compete at regional, state, and world competitions. At the St. Louis Regional Competition, the Ratchet Rockers competed in a pool of 49 teams from four states and earned a ranking of 4th after qualifying matches. The Ratchet Rockers competed in quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals with the second seed alliance partners, Team 1178 (DeSmet Ultimate Robotics Team) and Team 2978 (Cavaliers from Bishop DuBourg High School), earning a wild card opportunity as a member of the finalist alliance to attend the World Championship competition in Houston, Texas April 19-21.

“I have learned how energized and community-oriented the events are,” said first-year team member Aadi Kadam from Liberty High School.

“It’s very exciting and important to support everyone here. I can’t wait for the next competition.”

The Ratchet Rockers designed a highly-competitive robot this year with unique features to meet the demands of the video-game-themed competition. The robot has custom-made swerve modules (motorized wheels) which gives the robot advanced mobility and speed. Another distinctive feature includes two heavy duty platforms that drop to lift two additional robots using a winch capable of lifting over 600 lbs. The control software (coding) was written for the robot to complete tasks like lifting and placing game cubes in

targeted areas without a driver controlling the robot. Each aspect of the game is addressed with the specialized features of the team’s robot design.

Throughout the build season, as well as the competition, the team worked tirelessly and continuously to improve the robot’s function.

“It’s awesome to be a part of this team and to see the students’ excitement, as well as how involved they become in the process,” said Team Mentor Dr. Narelle Deatherage. “Everyone works together so well to achieve a common goal.”

The Ratchet Rockers Team 1706 is comprised of about 50 students from all three WSD high schools: Holt, Liberty and Timberland. WSD HOSA students advance to international competition Students in the Holt, Liberty and Timberland high school HOSA (Future Healthcare Professionals) chapters competed in the Missouri HOSA State Leadership Conference in Rolla, Missouri on March 26 and 27. Sixteen students brought home an award and qualified to move on to the International Leadership Conference which will be held in Dallas, Texas on June 20-23.

Timberland junior Sofia Angel was named a Missouri HOSA State Officer for the 2018-19 school year. In addition, Timberland senior Caitlin Grubbs and Timberland juniors Sofia Angel, Kenna Vaughn, and Brooke Bzdawka received the Barbara James Service Award for completing over 75 hours of community service. Timberland HOSA also received the HOSA Service Project Recognition Award for raising $150 for the HOSA national service project, National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI).

Save a tree by bringing unneeded documents to securely destroy and recycle, a free service for St. Peters and Cottleville residents. Simply place the documents you want to shred in cardboard banker-size boxes, limit five per vehicle. Additional boxes can be shredded at a charge of $5 per box.

Non-residents can also recycle documents for a fee of $5 per box, cash only.

All of the shredded material will be recycled including the cardboard boxes if they are not needed back. Do not bring computer discs or hanging file rods. If you can tear it, then you can shred it using this service. The documents may contain staples or paper clips. A current Resident Privilege Card must be presented to receive the free service.

Conor Behrens started off the scoring for the Lions with an RBI double in the first inning. Ian Nelson hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Drew Quinones for the quick 2-0. Good pitching by Lindenwood’s Andrew Eilers tallied six strikeouts in five innings pitched.

After the game was tied, Dominic Revetta tattooed a ball to deep left field for a solo shot, giving Lindenwood a one-run lead. In the same inning, Wes Degener belted a ball over the right field wall to extend the lead to 6-4 after four innings.

Revetta hit two-RBI double down the left field line and later scored on a single by Brett Andersen to make it a 9-5 ballgame. Vince Saladino added a run in the top of the seventh with an RBI single up the middle and the Lions tacked on two more runs in the top of the eight to take a 12-5 advantage. Kyle Hentis picked up his second save this year after tossing four-scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and struck out three batters in the process.

In the second game on Sunday the Lions completed the sweep over Fort Hays with a 10-5 win also at the Lou Brock Sports Complex.

Revetta tied the game at 1-1 after an RBI triple in the second inning and Behrens continued his great week with an RBI single to center in the third inning to knot the game up at 2-2. Brett Andersen put the Lions in front 3-2 after driving in Revetta on an RBI single, but the Tiger regained the lead in the fifth inning with a two-run home run.

At that point Andersen broke the tie with a single through the right side and DJ Miller drove in a run to extend the lead. Drew Quinones poked a two-RBI double to right center and Behrens drove in Quinones on a double down the left field line to quickly make it a 10-5 lead. Michael Cessna earned his second win of the season after tossing two innings with one strikeout and no hits allowed.

The culmination of a decade’s worth of work and after-credit teasers, “Avengers: Infinity War” is slated to make movie history. Twenty-two characters from Marvel’s Cinematic Universe (MCU) will gather together to battle one major cosmic villain. This film is a game-changer, with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige promising that in this one “dead characters will stay dead.”

Ticket sales are more than brisk and it’s safe to say this superhero adventure will become a huge cinematic event. Marvel Studios says that “Infinity War” will usher in “Phase 4” of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The studio also will be giving top billing to two female characters, the Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) and Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), in other film projects preparing for release.

Some performers who helped build the MCU into a powerhouse have mentioned leaving their characters behind, though. Chris Evans, who played Johnny Storm/Human Torch in two “Fantastic Four” movies, owns the role of Captain America. Evans, however, has been quoted as saying he plans to step away from the hero. Chris Hemsworth, who plays Thor, God of Thunder, also has mentioned quitting the role he has played for years.

Invention contention Some inventions are miraculous. Take for example bacon. Whoever thought such a delicious by-product could come from something that soaks in mud all day?

Let’s hear it for whoever invented bacon!

Now on to some inventions that need to be seriously reconsidered. For instance, the public restroom; everything inside is now mechanized and computerized.

Let’s examine the bathroom procedure step by step (technology has forced me into revealing this our most private of moments). Thanks for that technology!

First, enter a stall. Be prepared if there is no handle on the johnny because you must calculate with certainty the placement of your backside on the seat. When firmly attached, you are now committed! Do not even think of rearranging your nether region’s position once it has touched the seat surface. If you should miscalculate and get your rear section a smidge off-centered, for the love of all that is pure and sanitary – freeze! Do not attempt to make adjustments!

If you so much as shimmy a nanometer, the camera that is located somewhere in the back section of the toilet will register that movement and immediately flush with an atomic force that creates a bum hickey on your hide for weeks. Also, the potty will shower your tail section with gushes of droplets from unknown polluted origins. When this happens, immediately grab some Purell from your purse and slather up those areas like a baby with bad diaper rash. That section is now safe, but your entire body is contaminated at this point with toxins that have been aerosol-sprayed into your breathing space.

Quickly, you must decontaminate. Run to the automatic soap dispenser. Place hands under the soap dispenser, which isn’t intended to produce

any cleansing agent.

Next vibrate fingers to alert the microchip that you are present. Nope to the soap. Try jazz hands: wiggle, wiggle. Nada.

After numerous attempts, scoop up the pile of soap that has crusted beneath the dispenser on the counter. Scrub hands together then place beneath the automatic water dispenser three or four times.

Nothing. Move to the next faucet and repeat. Not today. Next, tap the handle top; hit the sides and move on to the third faucet and curse loudly. At this point a kind old lady will twist the faucet handles on (which you’ve failed to see) and offer the demeaning kind of scowl she gives to her low I.Q. poodle after he has doodied on her plush carpet.

Next comes drying. The electronic paper towel dispenser will not release any towels no matter how many times a hand is waved over the sensor because they have become bunched up inside and are permanently stuck. At this point, wipe your hands on your pant legs which have been covered in all manner of sewage particles spewed from the toi toi, making the entire hand cleaning procedure null and void.

Go home and shower in bleach then eat some bacon…you’ll feel better.
