Doctors and nurses in St. Charles County continue the fight against COVID-19 as the state eases restrictions on social gatherings

Beginning this week, Missouri re-opened for business.

As of Monday, the statewide restrictions on social gatherings will be gone and every business can reopen, according to Missouri Gov. Mike Parson. In Phase One, which began Monday, the governor’s plan calls for “no limitations on social gatherings, as long

as necessary precautions are taken and six feet of distance can be maintained between individuals and/or families.”

As of May 1, St. Charles County has 555 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 28 deaths.

The area’s healthcare professionals have been on the frontlines during these restless and challenging times. What lies ahead is almost anyone’s guess.

Dr. John Paul Shoup is a Primary Care Physician with Barnes Jewish-Christian

Medical Group in Wentzville. Shoup is a board-certified pediatrician and internal medicine physician along with being Medical Director for BJC Access Center where he helps direct the virtual triage and much of the virtual care for BJC Medical Group.

Shoup said the most important message for people to hear is to continue social distancing.

‘FRONTLINES’ from cover that does not mean that coronavirus is not present in our community,” he said. “We know that the virus spreads very easily, even before you start to show symptoms.

So we need to do everything we can to continue the habits we’ve developed.”

That means, along with social distancing, limit unnecessary public activities, wear a mask when in public, avoid shaking hands or other physical contacts and wash your hands as frequently as possible.

Shoup said that if we can maintain those habits then he is hopeful that we will not see a resurgence in cases.

“If we return to ‘normal life’ and don’t practice social distancing, I expect that we will see a quick resurgence in disease activity,” he added.

Marian Newton is a registered nurse and an intensive care unit charge nurse at Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital. She has lived in St. Charles County for 25 years.

Like most, Newton is unsure what the future holds but does believe that we may see a spike in cases of COVID-19.

“It does scare me as a healthcare worker because I feel like even with all the social distancing in place people chose to ignore it and when we go back to ‘normal’ socializing it will overwhelm the hospitals again,” she said.

Newton has been a nurse for 39 years

and the COVID-19 outbreak is unlike anything she has experienced.

“We normally have maybe two-to-four ventilator patients on any given day or sometimes none,” Newton said. “Usually flu season increases that. However, since COVID started and a bit before we have had six-to-eight ventilator patients and they are very sick. The care of COVID patients is so much more intense. An RN can literally be in their room for an hour at a time and the patients require more medications to keep them stable and oxygenated.”

Newton admitted at first, many thought that COVID-19 was just another virus but as time went on and they experienced sicker and sicker patients, the realization hit that this was so much different. Newton’s hospital first limited the visitors to one at a bedside then rather quickly changed that to no visitors. This made for an eerily silent work environment.

“It also made it sad for the patients without having any family with them,” she said. “We do have the ability to have families camera in on their loved ones in order to see them and talk to them. Most of the patients we have however are sedated so the family will not get any reply from the patient.”

Shoup called these times, “unprecedented.”

“This is the sort of thing that you learn about in medical school, but never something that you expect to actually happen,” Shoup said. “Missouri has had over 300 people pass away, and more than 8,000 people infected with a disease that didn’t exist six months ago.”

Hospitals have canceled all procedures or in-person evaluations that are not necessary and there are very few patients, even those infected with COVID-19, coming into offices.

“We are staying busy by providing virtual care for our patients- for instance through video visits,” Shoup said. “But it is strange to practice medicine from behind a computer screen. We do still see patients in our practices, but only when absolutely necessary- we want to avoid any unnecessary exposure.”

And as far as getting back to some sort of normalcy?

“I am not sure we will ever be back to how it was before COVID 19,” Newton said. “In one aspect that is great because maybe we have taught people to be more conscious of washing their hands and sanitizing more. In another, I think we will always be frightened it may happen again.

We can just hope the scientists come up with a vaccine and better treatment.”

at governor.mo.gov St. Charles County Executive Steve Ehlmann announced at the April 27 County Council meeting that the county will follow the state’s Phase I plan for recovery from COVID-19 announced by Missouri Governor Mike Parson. The governor’s “Show Me Strong Recovery” plan allows residents to return to economic and social activities as long as they adhere to social distancing guidelines.

“The rate of COVID-19 cases per 10,000 population is less than half that of St. Louis city and county,” says Ehlmann. “We believe St. Charles County is ready to reduce restrictions and, while continuing to require social distancing, allow individuals to make decisions on whether to frequent a business.”

Ehlmann says the Department of Public Health will continue to be vigilant in contact tracing and quarantining of those who test positive for COVID-19.

“We will continue to do everything in our power to make sure that, if St. Charles County residents decide to patronize a business, they are able to do

so as safely as possible,’’ Ehlmann says. “As we reopen, it becomes even more important that every jurisdiction in the region be equally effective with its contact tracing.”

Ehlmann says that while his Executive Order on March 23 required residents to remain in their residence or on the property surrounding their residence except to go to work or to engage in activities they deem necessary to their physical, mental or spiritual well-being, the orders never shut down businesses.

“I left it up to residents and businesses to determine what was essential,” he says, “and both did a great job at doing so. Our local retail stores and other places of public accommodation communicated social distancing requirements to customers and that has helped us to limit the spread of COVID-19 enough that I feel we are ready to take the next step the governor has recommended.”

I typed, “Yes” and my phone rang.

I was working on my laptop while trying to convince my 11-year-old son he needed to complete his grammar worksheets. I had also just received a long email from my boss that required immediate action. I did not have time to talk, but I assumed it would be a quick call.

My co-worker does not have young children at home and assumed I would be available for an impromptu training session. I didn’t want to be rude, so I acquiesced.

“I can multitask,” I thought. “I’ve got this.”

My son, however, thought this would be a perfect opportunity to perfect the art of whining.

I held a hand over the phone and whispered harshly, “Just do your work. This will only take a minute.”

He thought I said, “Screech loudly, throw all your papers on the floor, and dance on top of them.”

I swung in his direction. He dodged. My computer pinged. Another email from my boss. My co-worker asked if I had an excel spreadsheet she sent me a month ago. Before the pandemic. Before I became a homeschool teacher. Before my livelihood hinged on the speed of my internet connection. In other words, a lifetime ago.

“Of course,” I said, and clicked on a file folder only to get the revolving hourglass of doom.

“When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.”

ally am. Because my son refused to be quiet, my email pinged 15 more times, and I lost all control of my mouth.

“Master Flipper! Son of a gas groper! Get your squiggly soon-to-be discombobulated booty over here!”

He decided the life-preserving option was to run with high velocity for the escape hatch (the back door). Unfortunately for him, I run faster.

After I caught him and filled his ears with words more generally acceptable on U.S. Navy warships ships than in my home, my vulnerable little boy was sobbing while I pretended to be the Big Bad Wolf to his little piggy.

I regret losing my temper. I wish I was perfectly composed all the time. I wish I knew how to take my own advice. Alas, I’m only human. And a sincerely flawed one at that.

A half an hour later – after I had cried a few tears of my own – I said, “Son, I love you.”

He said, “I’m sorry I was disrespectful.”

I said, “I’m sorry I said all those awful words and scared you. Do you forgive me?”

Local Author Spotlight: Amanda King Amanda King was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at 14 years old and will never forget the feelings of being overwhelmed and scared.

Which made her see a need to use her graduate degree in early childhood special education to write a book for children to help explain diabetes on the appropriate age and development level for them to understand.

“Cody and His Type 1 Diabetes: Cody Gets an Insulin Pump and Continuous Glucose Monitor,” is the second book in the series both written by King to help children better understand diabetes in words and photographs that they can relate to in a positive way. St. Charles County paramedics launch “8KinMay” initiative to support Operation Food Search amid COVID-19 Since March, more than 25 million Americans filed for unemployment amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Layoffs, furloughs and reductions in work hours have translated to increased requests for nutrition assistance at food pantries across the nation, including those served by St. Louis-based Operation Food Search (OFS).

St. Charles County Ambulance District (SCCAD) paramedics saw this critical need as an opportunity to repay the tremendous support and kindness that residents have shown first responders in recent weeks, and invite members of the community to join their #8KinMay effort to support OFS. “The idea began as an internal collection among our team,” said Lieutenant Ashley Pease, who along with Paramedic Bill Norris, is leading the #8KinMay movement. “The support was swift and resounding – scores of our team members have pitched in, and ultimately raised more than $4,000, which will be used by OFS to stock pantries throughout our county.”

With appeals for food assistance certain to increase in the days to come, Norris, Pease and the SCCAD team have a simple request for members of the community able to make a donation: join us.

Donations can be made directly to OFS using the link found on the ambulance district’s social media feeds and website, sccad.com.

“By shining a light on this critical need in our community, our hope is that residents will be moved to make a contribution to help neighbors, matching our paramedics’ $4,000 donation for a total of $8,000,” said Norris.

OFS has seen a tremendous increase in demand for services since the onset of COVID-19. The organization normally supports approximately 200,000 individuals monthly, and is seeing the need for emergency food supplies explode across the region as thousands of families are facing a loss of household income.

“The paramedics of St. Charles County have been long-standing partners in our effort to heal the hurt of hunger,” said Kristen Wild, Executive Director of OFS. “Monies collected through their #8KinMay effort will fund vital OFS programs that provide nutritional support to children, seniors and families. #8KinMay is not the first pairing of SCCAD and OFS; the organizations have collaborated during the holiday season for the past decade on ‘Fill the Ambulance with Food’ – an initiative that has collected 25,000 pounds of food from local retirement communities.”

Cosmos Corporation converts production lines to develop hand sanitizer for St. Louis community Cosmos Corporation – a global leader in pet health and wellness products – announced it has retrofitted current product lines to produce hand sanitizer for the St. Louis area and bistate region, addressing shortages caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The hand sanitizer, Fresh & Clean, is now available at Schnucks grocery store locations in Missouri and Illinois. In addition, Cosmos has donated thousands of bottles to local charities and critical organizations regionwide to keep at-risk community members safe.

After Cosmos employees noted the lack of hand sanitizer products available in St. Louis-area stores, company leadership approved the production of hand sanitizer to meet a growing need in the local community and keep people employed during these challenging times. In an unprecedented 10 days, Cosmos built a new production line at its Wentzville manufacturing facility dedicated solely to the production of hand sanitizer. The new line started operating and producing hand sanitizer on April 3, with three shifts daily allowing the line to operate 24 hours a day, including weekends, to help address demand.

“To have our employees see the need for hand sanitizer locally, then rally to provide a solution, has been special and representative of our company mission to give back to those in need,” said Landon Hobson, CEO of Cosmos

Corporation. “These are unique times for us all, but the St. Louis community is one that always comes together and I’m grateful to our employees, suppliers and partners for their hard work in helping produce and distribute this product at a moment of great need.”

With the increased hand sanitizer production, Cosmos hired 18 new employees to assist in developing the new product and continues to employ over 175 employees based at company headquarters, which will soon move to a new expanded facility in O’Fallon. After ensuring distribution of the St. Louis-made hand sanitizer locally, there are plans in place for nationwide and international distribution to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

Wentzville School District announces support staff employees of the year The Wentzville School District recently recognized all of the hard working support staff employees who go above and beyond for WSD students and the district.

“It is the support staff employees who drive our buses, prepare our meals, clean our schools, and do scores of other jobs that help support the educational efforts of the district,” said Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Dr. Jennifer Hecktor. “Our support staff employees often labor behind the scenes, but their dedication and hard work do not go unnoticed. We appreciate all they do to support students and staff and their contributions every day are part of what makes the WSD special.”

COVID-19 Guidelines for St. Charles County Employers On April 27, 2020, Gov. Mike Parson announced the first phase of the “Show Me Strong Recovery” Plan outlining how Missouri will gradually begin to reopen economic and social activity as of Monday, May 4, 2020. His plan, available to view at https:// showmestrong.mo.gov, explains that every person and business in the state will abide by social distancing requirements, including maintaining 6 feet of space between individuals. This order does not apply to family members or individuals performing job duties that require contact with other people closer than 6 feet.

In those instances, individuals should take enhanced precautionary measures, such as wearing masks, continuing handwashing and sanitizing, and using proper surface sanitizing techniques to mitigate the risks of contracting or spreading COVID-19. This includes when customers are standing in line or individuals are using shared indoor or outdoor spaces.

Due to precautionary measures related to COVID-19, St. Charles Community College decided to move all classes into the virtual space.

When biology professor Dr. Monica Hall-Woods heard the news, she understood, but she also realized something else.

“The antibiotic research my students were doing in my biology class would have to stop,” she said.

“The insect DNA project and scheduled field trips would have to come to a halt.”

She was worried about losing the one thing she loved most about her classroom – a sense of community.

So she decided to do something about it.

“I wanted to keep my students engaged and connected,” Hall-Woods explained, “so I decided to use virtual backgrounds during online class time.”

Virtual backgrounds led to another idea. Enter Guy Fieri.

“I realized I could theme each week with cos-

tumes,” she said. “So I dug out a bunch of Halloween costumes and found a background to match.

My latest endeavor was Guy Fieri.”

Effie Trinket from The Hunger Games and a unicorn with rainbows have also been in the mix.

Hall-Woods tries to keep her students guessing.

She’s a very big Harry Potter fan, and while students are fully expecting to see the theme show up by the end of the semester, she wants to remain unpredictable.

It’s a small gesture to bring a little joy into her students’ lives, but it’s paying off big. She’s seen a great response in attendance during her weekly sessions.

“It’s not required, but a lot of them are showing up,” Hall-Woods explained. “I ask them about their situations, what I can help with, answer questions about class, advise them about their degrees – whatever they need.”

Baseball in O’Fallon in two months, maybe The O’Fallon Hoots play in the Western Division of the Prospect Wood-Bat League that consists of top collegiate players in a summer baseball league. They play their home games at the friendly confines of CarShield field in O’Fallon.

The Prospect League recently announced its decision to delay the regularly-scheduled 2020 Opening Day from May 28 to July 1. The new Opening Day is subject to decisions by national, state and local governments, as well as health organizations and medical recommendations and group gathering guidelines.

“We fully understand that our 2020 season will be determined by the trusted leaders in each of our five host states, our 12 municipalities and counties, as well as decisions by our ballpark lessors. We acknowledge we will play when they tell us we can play, but we are hereby announcing we are officially moving our regularly-scheduled season-opener to July 1,” stated Prospect League Commissioner Dennis Bastien. “We are extremely hopeful this decision by the Prospect League Board of Directors can be met. We understand each of our clubs may fall under different deadlines due to the aforementioned circumstances and we certainly will not open any of our ballparks if, in any way, the safety and health of any of our fans, players, ballpark workers, staff and umpires could be put in harm’s way, impacted or jeopardized by any po-

tential effect of the coronavirus. That is our first and foremost priority.”

Hoots General Manager, David Schmoll, echoed Bastien’s comments.

“While we were excited to kick off our first season in O’Fallon on May 29, the health and safety of everyone involved in putting on a Hoots game is our priority,” Schmoll said. “We look forward to the day when we can safely bring the Hoots to CarShield Field for the community to enjoy baseball again.”

Orange Eggs Benedict Serves: 6

Ingredients: Orange Hollandaise: 2 egg yolks 1 orange, juice only 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted ater w 1 tablespoon white vinegar 6 eggs 1/2 cup butter, softened 6 French baguette slices, 3/4-inch thick each 6 thick slices ham 1/2 cup orange marmalade orange zest, for garnish

Directions:

To make Orange Hollandaise: In small bowl, add egg yolks, orange juice and salt. Blend until combined. Gradually add melted butter into egg mixture while blending. Set aside.

Spread butter on one side of bread slices.

Place bread in skillet and cook until golden brown. Add ham to same skillet and cook until browned on both sides.

In skillet, add water halfway up sides. Add vinegar. Bring to simmer. Break eggs into water to poach. Cook 3-4 minutes until whites are cooked through and yolks are still runny. Using slotted spoon, remove

‘Saturday Night Live’ spin-off movies

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work. Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

n Oct. 11, 1975, “Saturday Night Live” debuted on NBC and set a new standard for latenight comedy. Performed live in front of a studio audience, it made stars out of Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd. Nearly 45 years later, SNL reinvented itself during the ongoing pandemic with “At Home” shows built around sketches and bits shot in the homes of the cast. The latest installment featured Brad Pitt playing infectious disease expert Dr. Fauci as well as a joke about Missouri wines.

This is not the first time the show has added to its brand. In 1980, Aykroyd and Belushi starred in “The Blues Brothers,” a big screen release with characters that debuted on SNL. The duo portrayed Jake and Elwood Blues, two orphans who take on a “Mission from God” to save the orphanage in which they were raised. It is a wild, musical ride through the Chicago streets with cameos from Ray Charles, Cab Calloway, James Brown and Aretha Franklin.

“The Blues Brothers” has since become a cult classic, but 1993’s “The Coneheads” didn’t fare as well. Based on a popular SNL sketch, Beldar (Dan Aykroyd) and Prymaat (Jane Curtin) arrive on Earth

from the planet Remulak. Although their ongoing mission involves world conquest, the two aliens find a lot to like about our planet. The Coneheads were funny in small doses on TV, but that humor did not translate well to the big screen.

“Wayne’s World,” on the other hand, hit all the right notes. On SNL, Mike Myers and Dana Carvey played Wayne and Garth, two best friends who filmed their own public access TV show from Wayne’s basement. The movie focused on television producer Benjamin Kane (Rob Lowe) and his plot to exploit their homegrown show.

Memorable moments include Wayne, Garth and their friends singing “Bohemian Rhapsody” while riding in Garth’s 1976 AMC Pacer.

Although not based on a “Saturday

Night Live” sketch, “Tommy Boy” featured the comedic talents of cast members Chris Farley and David Spade. Farley played Tommy Callahan, the son of “Big Tom” Callahan (Brian Dennehy), a successful automobile parts manufacturer. Tommy, who took seven years to graduate college, went to work at the factory, but after his dad passes away, tries to save the company.

Farley was at his best in this movie, especially in a scene where Tommy describes how Callahan brake pads help save lives.

In the mid-1990’s, “Saturday Night Live” added new blood to the cast in the form of Will Ferrell, Molly Shannon and Cheri Oteri. Ferrell and Chris Kattan took their “Butabi Brothers” characters to the big screen in 1998’s “A Night at the Roxbury.”

Shannon’s Mary Katherine Gallagher made her big screen debut in 1999’s “Superstar” while Leon Phelps (Tim Meadows) dished up romantic advice in 2000’s “The Ladies Man.” “Saturday Night Live” is trying to keep us entertained with their home-grown sketches and stable of spin-off movies.

Most of these films make the rounds on cable and broadcast TV and hopefully will bring a smile or two while we are staying at home.

he longer this quarantine thing goes on the more my husband and I are starting to look like we’ve been stranded for decades on a deserted island.

We’re starting to let ourselves go.

Each day is pants optional for my husband and instead of bothering to pluck my chin hairs I’ve started to name them. Harriet is my favorite.

It’s affecting everything; especially our cats!

Those sneaky beasts have been complaining for weeks now. They can’t get over the fact that they don’t have complete reign over the house.

For instance, just yesterday I had a small mixing bowlful of ice cream for breakfast and the chubby cat I mockingly call Blubber Butt (because he’s as big as a fur-covered minivan) had the nerve to snicker at me and say, “Who’s the blubber butt now?!”

“Oh no you didn’t, cat!” I fixed his fat red wagon and grounded him to his bedroom. He got tuna instead of salmon pate during snack time. That’ll teach him!

Yes, things are getting rough. I haven’t been to the salon in forever. My husband noticed.

“Your hair looks different. It’s longer and…sort of stringy and…mangy-looking.”

“Zip it Buster! In case you haven’t noticed the entire planet is closed for business. There are no beauticians available.”

“Wanna use my hair trimmer?” he offered.

“And end up like Van Gogh?”

“The artist?”

“The earless! Actually, I’m growing it out for a

trendy new style.”

“What’s that?”

“A man bun.

All the cool dudes are wearing them now. And since you’ve analyzed my appearance let’s discuss yours.” I sniffed the air. “Have you showered lately?”

“Shower? Is it that time already?

Saturday sure rolls around fast nowadays.”

“Ugh! You’re only bathing weekly now?”

“Isn’t the world closed? Who’s to impress? Not the neighbors. I saw Mr. Pilkinson outside in his under drawers bending over to pull his crabgrass out this morning. I got a full rearview sighting.

Can’t wash that image away even if I took two showers a week! But I’ll work on my hygiene if you work on those chin hairs; maybe dab on some eyeshadow. You’re starting to look a little…cadaver-ish.”

I turned around concealed in my new homemade surgical facemask. I pointed to my shield.

“Who needs makeup or maintenance? That’s what these babies are made for.”

Pandemic pandemonium
