Area churches meet the challenges presented by coronavirus by finding creative ways to congregate

By Brett Auten The COVID-19 outbreak has challenged the spirit but, it hasn’t broken it.

Area churches have gotten creative during this era of self-quarantining and social distancing as they continue to spread their message the safest way they know how.

On May 10, Wentzville Christian Church celebrated Mother’s Day with one of the area’s only in-house services. Wentzville Christian decided to close campus around the same time as everyone else and having done live stream services since the fall, the transition was seamless. But when Missouri Governor Mike Parson opened up the state on May 4, Wentzville Christian decided to follow suit “There could have been a few more, but

we looked around the web and couldn’t find any other that opened up on Mother’s Day,” Wentzville Christian Church Discipleship Minister Kurt Charlton said. “I was really surprised.”

Wentzville Christian put in a reservation system that would guarantee a spot in the pews for a family. Every other pew was blocked off and families were spaced out by at least four seats. The changes allowed for 20-percent of its usual morning attendance.

There was one dedicated entrance and one dedicated exit to limit any lobby gatherings.

“The plan was great and the people loved it,” Charlton said. “Everyone did a great job with it. They honored and respected the changes. We wanted to give them the option (to come) and even the people who decided

not to come, they were glad we opened up.”

At Faith Baptist Church in O’Fallon, a brainstorming session led to two months’ worth of a unique concept.

“And it might be our last,” Arender said.

“We don’t know yet, We want to move back in but it will be a slow process.”

Arender would preach from pulpit placed outside the front of the church while the congregation took advantage of the spacious parking lot.

When it comes to online worship, O’Fallon’s SunRise United Methodist Church is a harmonious production.

SunRise Methodist has been doing online worship for three years. They made the transition on March 21 to online-only worship and will continue to do so through the month of May. All aspects of the service are pre-recorded and then professionally editing and ready to upload and stream at the normal service time and is also available following in on-demand on multiple platforms. Among the members of its highly-creative staff are online “hosts” who welcome and greet

“We were blessed in that we did not need to learn all of this in three days,” Pastor Jim Blue said.

Great Rivers Greenway wants your opinion Since August 2019, Great Rivers Greenway, St. Charles County and the municipalities within St. Charles County have been working together to develop a coordinated greenway plan for the county.

This project is part of Great Rivers Greenway’s overall efforts to connect St. Louis City, St. Louis County and St. Charles County with a network of greenways where people can walk, run and ride a bike.

With partners, 125 miles of greenways have been established thus far. The new greenway plan will guide the next phase of the public agency’s sales tax investment in St. Charles County greenways. Project partners have gathered and analyzed feedback on where people want to connect to a greenway and what their priorities are for greenway experiences. The next phase of this planning process is to determine what the people who live, work and play in St. Charles County think about the proposed greenway routes. Residents can see all of the proposed routes and take a brief online survey at www. greenwayplan.org.

Sts. Joachim and Ann Care Service provides free diapers, wipes for 265 children More than 150 local families were blessed with free diapers and wipes from Sts. Joachim and Ann Care Service during its inaugural 2020 Diaper Drive Thru. A total of 167 low-income families, including 278 children, in St. Charles, Lincoln and Warren counties signed up to receive free diapers and wipes this spring.

“Many of our families with young children are struggling to provide the most basic needs for their families. Diapers and wipes are expensive for our families, and we wanted to ease some of their burden,” said Pam Struckhoff, executive director at Sts. Joachim and Ann Care Service. “A drive thru service allowed these families to safely access needed diapers and wipes while practicing social distancing.”

The Diaper Drive Thru, which was held in April and May, was open to the first 100 families in each county to sign up.

“Thank you to our Lincoln County partners for helping make this Diaper Drive Thru a reality in Lincoln and Warren counties. We could not have done this without the support of these agencies and local businesses” said Struckhoff. “We appreciate the support, and hope to continue this important event annually.”

Donations of diapers and wipes are always needed to support fragile families in St. Charles, Lincoln and Warren counties. Donations can be dropped off at the Care Service in St. Charles located at 4116 McClay Road, or visit the Care Service Wish List at Amazon.

Cuivre River Electric Cooperative begins gradual reopening of its buildings Based on Missouri Governor Mike Parson’s “Show Me Strong Recovery” plan that went into effect as of May 4, Cuivre River Electric Cooperative (CREC) will begin gradually reopening its offices located in Troy and Lake Saint Louis.

CREC’s phase-in plan will start with bringing back employees – who have been working at home and are not sick or showing symptoms – on site to work, still abiding by social distancing requirements when possible, including maintaining six feet of space between individuals. When performing job duties that require contact with other people closer than six feet, employees will taking enhanced precautionary measures, such as wearing masks, continuing handwashing and sanitizing, and using proper surface sanitizing techniques to mitigate the risks of contracting or spreading the

COVID-19 virus.

In coming weeks, CREC’s drive-through windows and lobbies will reopen, also requiring visitors to follow social distancing guidelines.

“While we are targeting June for allowing members and visitors access to our buildings again, we also must keep in mind that this will depend on the status of the coronavirus pandemic at that time,” says General Manager/CEO Doug Tracy.

“The safety of both our employees and our members is first and foremost. Even after access to our building is restored, we will be taking additional steps to ensure social distancing and other precautionary measures are followed.”

Nonpublic School Participation in Services through the Coronavirus Aide, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT NAME PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT ADDRESS DATE ISSUED On March 27, 2020, President Trump signed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES) Act into law. The CARES Act is a $2 trillion relief package to address the economic fallout related to the COVID-19 public health emergency.

Section 18003 makes funds available from the Education Stabilization Fund for grants to State Education Agencies for elementary and secondary school emergency relief.

Section 18005 of the Act provides that Local Education Agencies (LEAs) receiving funds from the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund must provide equitable services to non-public schools as required under section 1117 of the ESEA. However, control of these funds and title to materials, equipment and property purchased with such funds must remain with the public school district, and be administered by the public LEA. Public school districts will need to consult with non-public school officials to determine how the services will be providedto the non-public schools.

Allowable Uses Applicable to Non-Public Schools 1. Any activity authorized by the ESEA of 1965, including; • The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (20 U.S.C. 1400, et seq.) (“IDEA”), • The Adult Education and Family Literacy Act (34 U.S.C. 463, et seq.), • The Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006 (20 U.S.C. 2301, et seq.) (“the Perkins Act”), or • Subtitle 8 of title VII of the McKinneyVento Homeless Assistance Act (42 U.S.C. 11431, et seq.).

2. Coordinating the preparedness and response efforts of local educational agencies (LEAs) with state and local public health departments and other relevant agencies to improve coordinated responses among such

Purchasing educational technology (including hardware, software and connectivity) for students who are served by the LEA that aids in regular and substantive educational interaction between students and their classroom instructors, including low-income students and students with disabilities, which may include assistive technology or

adaptive equipment.

10. Providing mental health services and supports.

11. Planning and implementing activities related to summer learning and supplemental afterschool programs, including providing classroom instruction or online learning during the summer months and addressing the needs of low-income students, students with disabilities, English learners, migrant students, students experiencing homelessness and children in foster care.

The CARES Act funds are for the 2019-20 school year and will be available to LEAs for use until September 30, 2022.

While the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has a number of nonpublic schools registered for participation in federal rograms, there may be additional nonpublic schools that wish to receive an equitable share of services funded by the CARES Act.. Nonpublic schools not registered with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) may contact the Federal Programs Section to participate in the CARES Act services.

It is important to note that the non-public school will not receive funds, but rather services from the public school district.

If you choose to participate in the services the CARES Act funds offer, the Department will need confirmation from the nonpublic school of their wishes to participate as well as enrollment counts and economic deprivation counts BEFORE June 1, 2020.

COUNTRY Financial representative Robin Ruhmann donated $1,000 for free lunches from Baked (full-service bakery). The lunches – pizza or sandwich – were provided on May 2.

Lindenwood University has been recognized

by Interactive Health, which manages its wellness incentive program, as the healthiest employer among organizations similar to its size and demographic make-up and as one of the healthiest employers among the company’s clients nationwide.

Lindenwood is the top employer in its category, which includes 62 organizations with 999 to 1,499 employees. In its category and the entire education field, Lindenwood had the highest rate of participation in the program at 82.2 percent, and 77.7 percent of participants are in the “low-risk” range, based on data from annual health screenings and other factors, compared to the benchmark of 69.3 percent.

The university also exceeded the national benchmarks for average health score and percentage of high-risk participants, that latter of which decreased by 4.1 percent from 2018 to 2019. Candace Terry, the university’s benefits director, attributed the positive scores and improvement to Lindenwood’s commitment to wellness programs and information, including the popular LindenWell program and available fitness classes and groups.

“It is incredible to see the significant impact that the LindenWell program has had on employee wellness at Lindenwood,” Terry said.

U.S. News ranks Francis Howell High Schools among the best in Missouri The 2020 U.S. News & World Report Best High School Rankings include all three FHSD high schools on the prestigious list. The rankings evaluated almost 600 public high schools in Missouri and reviewed more than 24,000 nationwide to identify schools that best serve all of their students and assess the degree to which students are prepared for college-level coursework.

Francis Howell High School, Francis Howell Central, and Francis Howell North are all in the top 30 in Missouri and were also ranked in the top 3,000 high schools from across the nation. FHHS is ranked No. 12, FHC No. 23, and FHN No. 29, all in the top five percent in the state.

All three FHSD high schools scored well above the state average in math and reading proficiency, as well as

college readiness.

“We are incredibly proud of the work our students, teachers, staff, and administrators have done to achieve these results,” said FHSD Chief Academic Officer and Deputy Superintendent Dr. Nathan Hoven. “These rankings echo what other measures have shown us – that FHSD is one of the strongest school districts in the state.”

“The Best High Schools rankings provide the most comprehensive, data-based information on nearly every public high school in the country,” said Anita Narayan, managing editor of Education at U.S. News. “Families can use this information to see how their local schools compare on graduation rates and state as-

The U.S. News ranking methodology takes a holistic approach to evaluate schools, focusing on six factors: college readiness, reading and math proficiency, reading and math performance, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth, and graduation rates. College readiness measures participation and performance on AP and IB exams.

In February, Francis Howell North senior Emily Hood was named the 2020 Journalism Education Association (JEA) Student Journalist of the Year for Missouri. Two months later, the FHNtodayTV executive producer was recognized as the 2020 National High School Student Journalist of the Year.

Hood has played a critical role in transforming the broadcast program at FHN into what it is today.

“She penned one of the best-written series to ever come from this room, and she constantly worked to help those around her grow,” said FHN Director of Student Media Aaron Manfull.

“It’s great watching her work, and it is so nice to see the pats on the back she is getting for a job well done.”

Along with the national recognition, Hood received a $3,000 scholarship for her work and dedication to her school’s journalism program.

“As great as it is to be recognized with this award, I think it really is a testament to our pro-

gram and the culture that FHN Publications has created,” said Hood.

She gives credit to her teachers, the FHN administrators, and past editors who have helped her along the way by providing feedback and support.

While Hood was unable to receive the award in person due to the COVID-19 pandemic, she was honored that many of the individuals that supported her, including FHN Principal Dr. Nathan Hostetler, could celebrate her national recognition together on a Zoom call.

“It really meant a lot to have those people with me at that moment and hear something that is really kind of an award for all of us,” expressed Hood. Since the award ceremony is usually made at the annual conference, the virtual announcement was a chance to share with her friends and family who would not normally have been in attendance. Hood plans on attending the University of Missouri this fall and majoring in – you guessed it – journalism.

Local girls earn swimming all-decade honors Congratulations to two individuals who excelled in this sport that have stood out amongst many very talented girls over the past 10 years: Michelle Tipton of Fort Zumwalt West and Autumn Looney of St. Charles.

Tipton graduated in 2011 and has been selected to the first team of the all decade group: • In the 200 freestyle had the best time freshman, sophomore and junior years.

Selected by the university’s tennis coaches was Natalia Cordero to represent the Lions and for softball the coaches picked Hanna Porter.

Cordero, a sophomore from Santiago, Chile, finished the shortened season with a 4-3 overall record in singles, where she was 3-1 in duals, and 1-1 in conference matchups. She ended the season on a three-match winning streak. In doubles, she went 5-3, including 4-1 in duals. To close out the season, Cordero finished the season with a four-match winning streak in doubles.

Porter was a major threat at the plate in 2020, as she finished the shortened season second on the team in batting average (.385) and RBI (16). She led the team with nine doubles during the campaign, and also amassed 15 hits and 11 runs scored. In 2019, she was an honorable mention All-MIAA first baseman, and in 2017 she was named to the MIAA Honor Roll.

1 cup of pizza or marinara sauce

Cut the bread in half lengthwise then cut each half crosswise into 4 pieces.

2 cups fresh spinach, coarsely chopped 1 cup grated part skim mozzarella cheese ¼ cup freshly grated parmesan cheese

Spread 2 tablespoons of sauce on each piece. Top with spinach and cheeses.

Disney’s bold ‘Hamilton’ move could be a game changer

n 2019, the Walt Disney Company unveiled Disney+, a new streaming service featuring Marvel and Pixar releases as well as a treasure trove of movies, short films and original content. Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, even narrated “Elephant,” a new nature documentary, for the streaming service. The company also is spinning off some of the Marvel superheroes into their own original series.

This year, with movie production halted, theme parks closed and cruise ships stuck in port, Disney+ and its 54 million subscribers have become increasingly important to the company. Recently, Walt Disney decided to release “Hamilton” on Disney+ approximately 15 months before it was scheduled for theaters. The company spent a reported $75 million for the rights to a recorded version of the groundbreaking Broadway sensation.

While this is a great move for subscribers, it is a financial blow to theater owners. A big screen release of a “Hamilton” performance would have drawn large crowds in 2021. Instead, Disney is using it to direct traffic to their streaming service in the hopes of increasing subscriptions. Keeping viewers happy is doubly important since many Verizon customers received a free year of Disney+ in 2019.
