“The Baby Kid Expo is a a great way to get connected to opportunities available in our community for your family. You are able to speak directly with business owners, and uncover opportunities for your kids,” Heather Deatz said, owner of the Baby Kid Expo.

Over one hundred businesses will have information on recreation, education, health, camps, finance and home improvement, and many unique products will be available for purchase.

Bring the kids! There will be fun activities scheduled for the day, plus events happening on the main stage that they can be a part of as well.

St. Peters free Sunset Fridays concert series returns for 2019 Celebrate the end of your workweek at 370 Lakeside Park with this free concert series. Now in its seventh year, you’ll hear old favorites and new artists you’re sure to love. The music starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Corporate Pavilion.

Hear talented local musicians play a variety of music genres from acoustic to zydeco: • Returning on May 24 is Zydeco Crawdaddys playing a mix of traditional and contemporary Cajun music.

• The Melissa Neels Band plays rock and blues on May 31.

• St. Peters’ own Acoustic Music Jam plays acoustic country, pop and rock favorites on June 7.

Students have an opportunity to learn government as part of the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council O’Fallon high school students can experience firsthand what it means to serve in public office and offer support to the O’Fallon City Council as members of O’Fallon’s Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council (MYAC). MYAC members meet once a month in the City Council Chambers at the O’Fallon Municipal Centre (City Hall) to plan events and discuss topics important to area teens. MYAC also offers perspective on issues related to high school-aged residents that are up for discussion by the O’Fallon City Council.

To be eligible to join MYAC, you must be: • A high school sophomore, junior or senior (2019-2020 school year).

Optimist Club of St. Charles announces essay contest winners The Optimist Club of St. Charles recognized local essay competition winners of this year’s Optimist International Essay Contest on April 9. The top winners were guests of the club along with their parents and school sponsors.

The topic of this year’s essay was “When All the World’s Problems Are Solved, Is Optimism Still Necessary?” The winning essay was submitted by Chris Kimsey. Second place went to Georgia Kohr and third place went to Andy Ulett. Each participant is a student at Hardin Middle School in the City of St. Charles School District.

During the club meeting, the participants shared their essay with the club and all agreed – when all the world’s problems are solved there will still be a need for optimism.

Wentzville School District saves over $700,000 in debt refinance The Wentzville School District Board of Education unanimously approved the sale of approximately $21.7 million of the district’s outstanding Series 2012 Lease Participation Certificates through Clayton Holdings, LLC at a fixed rate of 2.71 percent. The interest savings to the district will be $716,000 on a cash flow basis, or approximately $60,000 each year through April 1, 2031.

According to Stifel, the district’s financial advisor, the district has completed 11 refinancing transactions since 2009, securing cash flow savings in excess of $31.6 million.

Fiscal responsibility across the district has resulted in a strong “Aa2” credit rating, which contributed to the WSD receiving competitive orders from six banks resulting in lower interest

rates and borrowing costs for the district.

“We are very pleased to be in a position to refinance and lock in savings for our taxpayers,” said CFO Pam Frazier. “Administrators across the district work very hard to be good stewards of taxpayer dollars, which positively impacts our credit rating and makes refinance opportunities like this possible. All stakeholders should take pride in where the district stands financially.”

The Wentzville School District continues to be the fastest growing school district in the state in the 21st century, adding over 500 new students on average each year since 2000. As a result, the district has built 11 new schools during that period and is now the 10th largest school district in Missouri.

Drivers need to give turtles a brake

The Missouri Department of Conservation urges drivers to be cautious on the roads this spring and give turtles a brake. These reptiles are often hit by cars during the warmer months, but are at special risk this time of year because they are more active.

Common turtles spotted crossing Missouri roads include three-toed box turtles, ornate box turtles and snapping turtles.

Turtles emerge from their burrows and begin the hunt for food and mates during warm and wet conditions, which can lead them to cross roadways, oftentimes resulting in their

death. Thousands of box turtles are killed every year by vehicles.

Turtles are cold-blooded creatures and depend on external sources of heat to determine their body temperature.

This is why people see them on warm asphalt during cool, spring days.

Vehicles are one of the leading factors in box turtle declines, and MDC urges motorists to be cautious and slow down when they see a turtle in the road. If helping a turtle make it safely across, check for traffic and move the turtle across the road in the direction it is traveling.

Additionally, MDC encourages Missourians to leave turtles in the wild. Taking a wild animal, be it turtle or other wildlife species, and keeping it as a pet normally ends in a slow death. Leave turtles in the wild, follow the speed limit, and keep your eyes on the road.

Navigating the hollow hallways of a broken heart we are angry and hurt, we are also grappling with how best to walk forward in love. So many people have advised us to “cut the toxic person out of our lives so they can’t hurt us any longer”. But that is not what Jesus teaches.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.”

I have struggled to practice this teaching because being slapped in the face stings.

The immediate reflex is to slap back with fervor. In fact, it takes concerted effort not to respond in anger even as the pain throbs through the skin and vibrates down into the heart.

This considerable betrayal has caused me to reflect on my own heart and the ways in which I have wounded other people. I think of the ways I have misused words with my mother out of selfish ambition. I consider the calculated ways I have sought to punish my spouse when he did not treat me the way I think I de-

serve to be treated. I consider the neglect I heap on my children by indulging my impulses to satiate boredom with social media. And these are a tiny fraction of the ways I hurt the people I love most. How can I judge the man who has sinned against me when I am guilty of the same behavior?

I remember other words that Jesus said. “Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.”

A gentle rain fell the day after I buried the mother, her young and my grudge. It seems that only God can truly help me navigate the hollow hallways of a broken heart.

City of St. Peters announces details for Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony on May 27 Highly decorated St. Charles native Master Sgt. Matthew Sims will be the featured speaker at the annual St. Peters Memorial Day Remembrance Ceremony on May 27.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled for 10 - 11 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial at St. Peters City Hall.

The St. Peters Veterans Memorial Commission will host the ceremony to honor American service members who gave their lives in the line of duty.

A cardinal perched on a wire and trilled an invitation while the cottontails searched for fresh shoots to nibble. Every breath of spring exhaled hope through the trees, but there I was, lifting the broken body of the mother and her babies from the road where they had perished.

I suppose passersby considered me a madwoman. Who lifts the dead creature from the street only to bury them where they will be forgotten? Why waste ones tears? But I could not leave her there. The indignity was too great. It seemed to me a small way to right a wrong in a world full of wrongs that may never be righted.

I have recently been walking the hollow hallways of a broken heart and I suppose this has made me more sensitive to sad things. Someone close to our family deceived us and broke their promise. This has seemed a great evil, and while

Timberland senior receives MUSIC scholarship

Timberland senior Nathaniel Beattie has been named a recipient of the 2019 Holley Scholarship from the Missouri United School Insurance Council (MUSIC). Beattie is one of six recipients chosen from over 250 applicants for the $2,000 scholarship, which is open to students in all 475 MUSIC member districts. The scholarship is named for the organization’s first Executive Director, Dr. Darrell “Jack” Holley, who helped create the MUSIC program in 1985 to provide broad property and casualty coverages under one comprehensive plan for all participating members.

Beattie is ranked first in his class and has a 4.56 GPA and scored a 35 on his ACT. He is an AP Scholar with Distinction, a National Merit Commended Scholar and a member of the National Honor Society. Beattie served two years as a Link Leader, a group of students who assist freshmen in their transition from middle to high school.

He is captain of the Timberland Scholar Bowl Team and he has been selected for both Missouri Scholars Academy and Missouri Boys State. Ad-

WSD Lead Art Teacher elected Missouri Art Education Association President Wentzville School District Lead Art Teacher Hester Menier has been named President of the Missouri Art Education Association (MAEA), an organization dedicated to keeping quality visual arts education in Missouri schools.

Menier has taught art in the WSD for 20 years and currently teaches at Stone Creek Elementary. She has worked previously at Duello Elementary and West Elementary (now Heritage Primary) and was selected building Teacher of the Year in 2002 and 2009. In 2014, she was named MAEA Elementary Art Educator of the Year and she was the first teacher in the district to achieve National Board Certification in 2010.

As president, Menier will be responsible for overseeing the planning of conferences and presiding over conference general sessions and MAEA meetings. She will also serve as the Missouri delegate to the National Art Education Association States Assembly and represent MAEA at all NAEA and Western Region conventions, conferences and meetings for four consecutive years.

“I am so proud to lead and represent the MAEA,” said Menier. “They have been my source of inspiration and support for decades. The members are my tribe. Rascals capture first place early in season The defending West Division champion River City Rascals play in the Frontier League with home games at the friendly confines of the CarShield Field in O’Fallon.

The team is officially in first place as of this article; however, the second, third, fourth and fifth place teams are only one half game behind in the standings. The Rascals have won six games out of the 10 played and the rest of the league has only won five…. it’s early in the season.

Second baseman #16 Trevor Achenbach is leading the attack with a .385 average ranking him fourth in the league and has cranked two home runs this young season that puts him in second place.

Kameron Esthay playing left field has also collected two round trippers along with a league tie of doubles with six that puts him on top of the leader board with 14 runs batted in.

On the mound Dalton Roach has pitched in two games with a total of nine innings tossed. He has registered one win and racked up six strikeouts and has not allowed a run therefore has a 0.00 earned run average.

The Rascals have a team batting average of .274 ahead of the second place club by .027.

Again, as mentioned, it is early in the season but it is statistics that are posted.

Lindenwood baseball squad end season Lindenwood ended the 2019 season with a 28-25 overall record and an 18-15 mark in MIAA action.

The Lions entered the MIAA Tournament as the sixth seed and they went 1-2 in the tournament only winning against Northwest Missouri 4-3.

Gary Baute, a St. Louis native, may be educated in business but he lives and breathes sports. As a fan or an athlete, Gary is all sports all the time.

Golfers at UMSL pick up hardware The University of Missouri-St. Louis sophomore Reilly Ahearn and freshman Joel Sylven of the men’s golf team have both been named to the Division II PING All-Midwest Region Team, as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) in Norman, Oklahoma.

Ahearn, an All-GLVC honoree, is second on the team with a scoring average of 73.66 and has four top-15 finishes, including a tie for third at the GLVC Championships.

Sylven is ranked No. 15 in GolfStat and has been named a semifinalist for the Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Award. An All-GLVC selection and the league’s Freshman of the Year, Sylven owns a team-best scoring average of 71.79 and has recorded six top-five finishes with nine in the top 10 while placing among the top 25 in 11 of 12 tournaments. He has earned medalist honors at the Midwest Regional at Fox Run and at the Newberry Invitational. Sylven is coming off a tie for second at the NCAA D2 Midwest/Central Regional last week.

The duo helped the Tritons to a runner-up finish at the NCAA Regionals last week and a spot in next week’s NCAA DII Championship. *See you guys in the PGA someday

Putting healthy meals on the table continues to be a yearround goal for many families, one that can become more difficult with the satisfying and savory flavors of comfort-food season.

While seeking healthier options for day-to-day meal planning, it’s important to start your decision-making at the grocery store.

Look for items like all-natural Pure Farmland Bacon, made from pork raised without antibiotics. In addition, it contains no artificial ingredients, preservatives, MSG or added hormones, so you can feel good about incorporating a family favorite like bacon into any meal of the day.

Ingredients:

1 cup flour

¼ teaspoon salt

1½ Tbs cocoa powder

1 large banana, sliced

2 eggs

2 cups vanilla Greek yogurt

1½ cups low-fat chocolate milk

Peanut butter drizzle, optional

½ cup water

Chocolate shavings, optional

Directions: Whisk together flour, cocoa powder, and eggs in a large mixing bowl. Add chocolate milk and water, stirring to combine. Mix in salt and beat until smooth.

Heat a lightly oiled pan over medium-high heat. Pour ¼-cup batter onto pan. Tilt pan with a circular motion so batter coats the surface evenly.

Cook crepe until bottom is light brown and bubbles cover the top of the crepe – about 1 to 2 minutes. Loosen with a spatula, turn and cook the other side.

Serve hot, filled with yogurt, and bananas. Top with peanut butter drizzle and chocolate shavings.

Tim Conway always kept them laughing…and more!

Born and raised in South St. Louis, Steve Bryan is now based in Anaheim, California, and has been allowed access to movie and television sets to see actors and directors at work. Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

ike the legendary Don Knotts, Tim Conway had a true gift for comedy. The multi-talented performer passed away on May 14, leaving behind a legacy of movies, supporting roles and other comedic contributions. During his 85 years, Conway knew how to make people laugh and keep them laughing with his talents.

Those who aren’t familiar with his work can see him in glorious black-and-white on “McHale’s Navy,” a military comedy set during World War II. Conway played Charles Parker, an ensign on PT-73, a patrol torpedo boat. He starred opposite Ernest Borgnine and, in interviews, Conway spoke highly of his co-star. “McHale’s Navy” can be seen on MeTV, a free digital channel that’s available on KNLC 24.1 in St. Louis.

Arguably, Conway did some of his finest work as a guest star and series regular on “The Carol Burnett Show.” The comedian created memorable characters, most notably “Mr. Tudball,” an executive whose secretary was Mrs. Wiggins (Burnett). Conway’s accent for the character sounded Swedish but he confirmed it was in fact Romanian. In the sketches, Mrs. Wiggins typically misunderstand his instructions and led to disaster for Mr. Tudball.

played a new dental school graduate who only achieved “C” grades in his classes.

Harvey Korman was a patient who came in on a Sunday with a bad toothache. The bumbling novice caused more pain for his patient and his antics reportedly caused

Mr. Korman to wet himself. “The Dentist” is available to view on YouTube and “The Carol Burnett Show” reruns can be seen on MeTV. In the years before the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Walt Disney Studios released many family-friendly comedies such as “The Love Bug” and “The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes.” Tim Conway was pretty much a Disney regular and appeared in films like “The World’s Greatest Athlete” opposite Jan-Michael Vincent. Conway was Milo Jackson, an assistant college coach who travels with his boss to Africa to find a legendary athlete played by Vincent.

“The Apple Dumpling Gang” featured both Conway and Don Knotts as bumbling bank robbers. Once members of a gang, the two would-be crooks do more harm to themselves than anyone else. The two comedy talents reunited a few years later in “The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again.” Their characters, Amos and Theodore, have gone straight but are now suspected of bank robbery.

In times like these, laughter is truly the best medicine, so it’s hard to lose someone as genuinely funny as Tim Conway. May he rest in peace after all the years of fun and laughter he gave us.

n case you didn’t know, we celebrated Lost Sock Day on May 9.

This gave us the occasion to mourn every sock that has ever passed into that mysterious black hole of missing laundry. This is also the day we should throw out the singles in our laundry basket of lone stockings that we’ve held onto for years.

May 10 should then be deemed, Found Sock Day to celebrate when every match to those singles we’ve discarded just as mysteriously turns up.

Laundry is a strange thing.

Take a stroll down the detergent aisle one day and you will see a strange phenomenon: an array of ladies opening up jugs of liquid washing compounds to breathe in huge huffs of fragrance like bibbers at the annual wine-tasting festival.

Edna: “Phyllis, come take a whiff of this one and tell me what you think.”

Phyllis takes the bottle from Edna and pours a small quantity into the detergent’s cap. She swizzles it around a time or two then holds it beneath her nostrils and takes a swift snort.

“Oh yes. That’s an interesting one. A very fruity bouquet. I detect notes of ambrosia with an undertone of oak. There’s definitely a preponderance of oxi-enzymes and powerful stain fighters in this one as well. It’s definitely got backbone.”

Edna: “Great. Now how about this one?”

Another capful is positioned under Phyllis’ nose holes. She breathes in deeply then gags.

“Ack! Nope! No good! That leaves a sharp edge on my sinuses. I can tell there’s an abundance of phosphates. All the cheap synthetic lavender perfume in the world can’t mask the elements of dead
