The Center of Autism Education made sure that anyone who walks its grounds will know a little more about the longtime educator when it held a private ribbon cutting ceremony for a new outdoor sensory and recreational center dedicated to the beloved special education teacher who passed away from COVID-19 complications on Jan. 1.

To her co-workers, Spies’ passion was inspiring and she saw potential in every learner.

“She would always go above and beyond,” Hanne Hawkins, director of development at CAE, said. “Off the clock, texting with par-

ents or staff who are having issues. She was a mother to everyone. She genuinely cared.”

In a promotional video for the Center for Autism, Spies had this to say: “We want to make it better for our students, and we want everybody else to see that. It’s very satisfying… This is my passion. I was born to be in this type of population because I love every single one of See ’LEGACY’ page 2

Since 2002, the Center for Autism Education, located at 4110 Old Mill Parkway in St. Peters, has carved a niche in the community as a resource for individuals living with autism or any developmental disability. It currently has 46 students from 12 different school districts, ages five to 21.

“The districts provide tuition and transportation and most of the students have a one-to-one or two-to-one paraprofessional situation,” Hawkins said. “The goal is to transition them back to their schools.”

In the spring of 2019, CAE officially launched their Play and Learn Campaign; the largest capital campaign in the agency’s history. The goal was to raise $230,000 to build an outdoor sensory and recreational center for its students. The instructional day facility had moved to a beautiful new

location with significantly more space to continue to expand programming and serve more students in the community. The new building was equipped with everything they needed, but there was no outdoor recreational space. For students with autism and severe behavior, access to a safe recreational space is a necessity.

“This has something for every learner,” Hawkins said. “This will be a tool for our staff to teach. Some of our kiddos may not have natural play skills.”

The students at CAE have unique sensory needs and the playground equipment is designed to cater to those needs. But the Play and Learn Campaign was about more than a playground. It was about providing a space for students to engage with peers and cultivate new friendships, a space for them to safely engage in the sensory stimulation they require to be successful (swinging, climbing, rocking, running, jumping, etc.),

a space for them to learn the importance of physical fitness and activity, and finally, a space for them to play.

“When we provide engaging experiences for our children that are play and socially oriented, they have responses that we seek for our neurotypical children,” Susan McGlade, an occupational therapist at CAE, said.

With the support of individuals and corporations in the Greater St. Louis philanthropic community, CAE successfully completed the campaign in November 2020.

The mission of CAE is to assure that every child, family and adult that it serves is provided the highest quality training in functional skills and behavior intervention in a respectful, positive and safe learning environment so that all reach their fullest potential, becoming successful, happy, and contributing members of the community and society at large.

Flag collection hosted by county government military veterans returns June 14 If you have a worn or damaged U.S. flag and don’t know where or how to dispose of it properly, the military veterans of St. Charles County Government are ready to help.

The county’s Veterans Best Practices Working Group is hosting its annual flag collection for the public from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Flag Day, June 14. The event takes place at a drive-by collection site, located at the corner of Monroe and Second Streets in St. Charles. The flags will be properly disposed of at a ceremony later this year.

The group has collected over 2,891 flags since the event launched in 2017. It was not held in 2020 because of the pandemic.

“We are excited to honor the flag and our armed forces, especially since we were unable to have it last year,” says Christina Follmer, Chair of the Veterans Best Practices Working Group.

Those who cannot drop off flags that day can do so from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday (except holidays), at the security desk in the St. Charles County Administration Building, 201 N. Second Street, St. Charles.

The Veterans Best Practices Working Group was established in 2014 after passage of an ordinance by the county council. The group exists to foster an employment-friendly environment for those who have served in the armed forces of the United States, to encourage businesses in the community to develop veteran-friendly employment practices, and to inform veterans seeking employment of opportunities and benefits with county government.

St. Charles County Government receives financial reporting recognition The Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting has been awarded to St. Charles County Government by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) for the fiscal year ending Dec. 31, 2019. The Certificate of Achievement was presented to Bob Schnur, who has served as St. Charles County Director of Finance since 2008. The award is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management.

St. Charles County Government has received this honor every fiscal year since 1989. The CAFR has been judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program, including demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the CAFR. “The finance department has been achieving this rating of excellence for more than 30 years,” says St. Charles County Executive Steve Ehlmann. “County government is honored to receive this award and I must recognize Mr. Schur and the finance staff, as well as their predecessors, who set the foundation for success. We take pride in our sound financial planning and controlled spending of taxpayer dollars.”

The GFOA is a nonprofit professional association serving more than 20,000 government finance professionals with offices in Chicago, Illinois, and Washington D.C.

Since 1938, St. Charles Branch AAUW (American Association of University Women) has awarded scholarships to high school senior women. The COVID-19 pandemic could not halt this proud tradition.

Applications which met all qualifications were accepted from any high school in St. Charles County.

Normally the committee reviews the applications and the two recipients and parents attend the May AAUW meeting. This spring, however, applications were evaluated and the committee met via Zoom. Two committee members presented the scholarship certificates in person at their respective high schools with

congratulations from counselors or administrators.

Recipients of the $500 scholarships include: Ally Willis from Timberland High School in Wentzville and Emily Zheng from Francis Howell North in St Charles.

St. Charles County Parks hosts Red Bull UCI Pump Track World Championships Qualifier It’s official! The St. Charles County Parks and Recreation Department has been chosen to host the area’s first Red Bull UCI Pump Track World Championships Qualifier. The event will be held from 12–10 p.m., July 31, at the newly renamed Kinetic Park (formerly Youth Activity Park) AT 7801 Town Square Avenue in Dardenne Prairie. This premiere pump track competition is one of four 2021 qualifying races scheduled in the United States, and the only one of its kind in Missouri.

If you are at least 17 years old and have what it takes to compete in this athletic biking competition, show us what you’ve got. The timed Red Bull UCI Pump Track World Championships Qualifier is open to 200 racing competitors: 100 men and 100 women. In separate runs, riders will race against the clock on the largest asphalt pump track in the nation at Kinetic Park. This distinguished series has pitted BMX against MTB for the first time on an equal platform, and the spirit of competition and exclusivity has gained recognition around the globe. The top four men and women from this qualifier will advance to the Red Bull UCI Pump Track World Championships held in Europe later this year. The top male finisher and top female finisher will receive an all-expenses paid trip to the world event and compete for the championship title.

The race will be an exhilarating experience for spectators, too! A limited number of park-goers will have the opportunity to watch all the excitement unfold in the park. Guests will enjoy live entertainment, giveaways, concessions, and displays from sporting vendors and organizations.

The cost to compete in the race is $20. Participants may ride either a BMX or MTB. A minimum wheel size of 20 inches is required.

Two WSD educators selected as finalists for presidential teaching award Wentzville School District teachers Jennifer Hancock and Justin Wilmes have both been selected as Finalists for the 2021 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). The award is the highest recognition that a K-12 mathematics or science teacher can receive for outstanding teaching in the United States. Hancock teaches seventh grade mathematics at South Middle School and Wilmes teaches Advanced Algebra, Geometry and Essentials of Math at Holt High School.

“It is such an honor to be considered a finalist for this award,” shared Hancock, who has worked for the WSD for six years. “I am grateful to have amazing support from administration and to be part of the extraordinary group of educators and students who call the Wentzville School District home.”

The awards are given to mathematics and science teachers from each of the 50 states and four U.S. jurisdictions. It recognizes those teachers who develop and implement a high-quality instructional program that enhances student learning. As state-level finalists, Hancock and Wilmes are both now candidates for the Presidential Award and the White House will announce those winners next year. Those selected for this Presidential honor will receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation and an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC, for an awards ceremony, educational events, and visits with members of Congress and the Administration.

“I am very honored and appreciative of being named a finalist for this award,” shared Wilmes, who has also worked for the WSD for six years, “It represents our Wentzville teaching community and the expectations we strive to put forward each day to make a positive impact for our students. I look forward to continuing to represent the Wentzville School District and collaborating with my peers to make math a positive experience for our students.”

Hancock and Wilmes represent the eleventh and twelfth WSD educators since 2012 to be named finalists in the running for the prestigious recognition for excellence in teaching.

Four WSD educators: Laura Parn (2012), Katherine Schack (2014), Stacey Wade (2017), and Terri Politte (2018), were all named recipients of the Presidential Award during that time.

“Jennifer and Justin are both deserving teachers of this distinguished recognition,” said WSD Superintendent Dr. Curtis Cain. “They join a long line of outstanding and respected educational leaders in Missouri and the Wentzville School District, and we are extremely proud of their accomplishments on behalf of students.”

The PAEMST award was established by Congress in 1983, and the program authorizes the President of the United States to bestow up to 108 awards each year. Awardees serve as models for their colleagues, inspiration to their communities, and leaders in the improvement of mathematics and science education. The National Science Foundation administers PAEMST on behalf of The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

Two more Hoots are on the roster The O’Fallon Hoots are members of the Prospect League, playing in the West-Prairie Land division and began play in O’Fallon in May 2020 after relocating from Hannibal, Missouri following the 2019 season.

The team has added JT Mabry and Tyler Denu to the 2021 roster.

The Chesterfield native Mabry has played two seasons with the Tennessee Blue Raiders, posting a career .205 average. The sophomore infielder has also posted a career .939 fielding percentage with 79 putouts and 137 assists. In the 2021 season so far, he has started 46 games with a .253 average with only seven strikeouts and a .964 fielding percentage in 222 total chances.

The Hoots announced also the signing of University of Evansville left-handed pitcher Tyler Denu for the 2021 summer season.

The 6’0” left handed pitcher made six appearances in a shortened 2020 season for the Purple Aces. Denu, a Mount Horeb, Wisconsin native, struck out 13 in just 8.1 innings pitched while only walking three in his freshman season.

The team have chosen Greg Muhr as their new head coach, the team announced recently.

As a player, Muhr enjoyed a professional arena soccer career that spanned nine seasons from 1989 to 1998. He played four seasons with the Chicago Power, two with the St. Louis Storm, one with the St. Louis Ambush and two with the Detroit Rockers. In 239 career games, the defender tallied 43 goals and 47 assists and blocked 475 opposing shots. Muhr also played outdoor soccer with the Chicago Stingers in the USISL D-3 league.

Muhr comes to the Ambush with over 27 years’ coaching experience. Muhr is currently the Girls Director for the Sporting St. Louis Soccer Club and also serves as a coach for the Missouri Youth Soccer Association’s Olympic Development Program. He has also been the Women’s Soccer Assistant Coach at Depaul University and head coach of two USL women’s league teams. Prior to turning pro, Muhr played four years of collegiate soccer at Eastern Illinois University, where he graduated with a degree in psychology.

Boseman was slated to star in a “Black Panther” sequel, but he passed away in 2020. The comic books say there always must be a Black Panther, but Mr. Boseman may be impossible to replace.

Like Black Panther, Superman is an icon and doesn’t need any well-intentioned tinkering, especially after 80 years of fighting for truth, justice and the American Way. Marvel and DC have already set the standard for comic book diversity.

‘Yeggs’ is a comic series about Robert and Bill, two rabbits who have opened their own egg franchise in the Midwest (St. Louis area). We follow their day to day lives, watching as they go about the hectic task of preparing for their one big day every year. Along the way they have adventures filled with fun, comic doings and pathos.

Moore On Life Well the masks are coming off and you know what that means…I’m going to have to apply makeup to the lower half of my face. Darn! Now I can’t secretly stick my tongue out at people at the store who cut in front of me with their shopping cart. But freedom to breathe will be a plus.

It’s hard to believe that masks used to be rare and had to be hand-sewn. Now the bins are filled with them with prices slashed to a dime a dozen.

Same with hand sanitizer; just last year I had to go on the street corner and make deals with a guy name Guido. He was big and burly and looked like he hadn’t used any kind of sanitizer in years.

I went to the corner at the appointed time – midnight. There he was skulking behind the lamppost.

“Hi there! Are you Guido?” I chirped.

“Silence! Don’t say my name,” he growled. “You got the stuff?!”

“Ya, I got it. You got my stuff?” I growled back.

Well actually it was a whimper followed by an old-lady bathroom accident, but at least I didn’t run.

He looked both ways then opened his trench coat and there in the lining were pockets filled with bottles of hand sanitizer.

I reached out to touch one and he quickly snapped the coat shut.

“No touch the merchandise until I get payment…understand?!”

I whimpered again, but crossed my legs just in time to avoid more embarrassment. I then reached into my purse and passed him a roll of double-ply.

A toothless grin spread across his stubbly face.

Now those days are gone. Tissue has filled the store aisles; there’s enough hand sanitizer to clean up Guido and his entire family; plus the masks are going the way of cursive writing.

Happy days are here at last…almost. I was at the store the other day and just about to round the corner when I caught a glimpse of Guido. That old feeling came back again. I grabbed a discount mask and slapped it on my face to hide behind then grabbed a package of double-ply and made a dash for the ladies room.
