St. Charles City-County Library District is now letting customers return books and is offering curbside service

By Brett Auten The St. Charles City-County Library District is slowly – but safely – reopening its doors.

Since the COVID-19 outbreak, the district was sealed off, physically. But last week, book drops reopened for returns and beginning this week, customers will be able to pick up holds using its curbside/driveup service. These services will be available at all St. Charles-City County Library locations with the exception of the Kathryn Linnemann Branch, which will remain

temporarily closed due to recent flooding.

Book drops reopened last week although materials checked out before the library buildings closed are not due until July 6.

Customers may return their borrowed books, music, and movies in book drops.

“It has been brisk,” Library Director Jason Kuhl said. “A lot of people are eager to get these things out of the house.”

Materials will be quarantined for 72 hours before they are processed. Kuhl said that if you return items and notice that they are still on your library account after a few days, do not be concerned.

Starting Wednesday, June 3, customers can pick up the library materials they have placed on hold using drive-up or curbside services. Once customers are notified that their holds are available, they can come to their designated branch, and a staff member will deliver items to customers in their cars. The use of book drops for returns is encouraged in order to minimize contact.

request curbside pickup. When you arrive at your branch, pull into a designated curbside spot or the drive-up lane. Call or text the number on the sign and please remain in your vehicle. Have your photo ID or library card ready to show. (Staff will look at your card through the closed window). A staff member will bring your materials to your vehicle. Please let staff know if you would like materials put inside your vehicle (and where) or left outside your vehicle.

The library will encourage physical distancing and ask that customers continue to keep items that can only be returned inside of a branch until buildings reopen. This includes cake pans, WiFi hotspots, telescopes, and other items from the “Library of Things” catalog.

Kuhl went on to say that while the library has diligently worked to serve customers remotely through the quarantine, it is grateful for their patient return to in-person services gradually happens.

“We are a unique industry in that we loan items out and people take these items into their homes and bring it back,” Kuhl said.

“The public library has changed so much this last decade. It is not a sleepy place. There is a lot of activity going on. There are people who spend all day at the library. We have a unique set of circumstances and we felt we had to take action early on.”

There has been and will continue to be virtual story-time programs as well as author events and it recently launched its first St. Charles County Reads program.

The library is following the Center for Disease Control-recommended guidelines to sanitize materials. Customers are reminded to avoid cleaning books and other library items using liquid, heat, or other home-based techniques.

The St. Charles City-County Library has been working in conjunction with the leadership teams at St. Louis County Library and the Municipal Library Consortium to make coordinated decisions.

All St. Charles City-County Library branches continue to offer password-free WiFi that can be accessed from the parking lots.

The horror of a bad habit

“It is to be feared that very many have little knowledge of the main enemy that they carry about with them in their bosoms.” – John Owen I was rooting around for ground beef in the freezer of my home recently when I discovered the opaque Tupperware container. The green lid concealed the contents so I popped it open. Like a gem unearthed from the bottom of a deep cavern, I marveled at its contents. Then, I felt the conflict in my soul. My hero and my nemesis. My panacea and my disease. Who would have thought the months-old remnants of an office birthday party could cause such turmoil in my inner being?

When I found sin in the shape of butter frosted chocolate cake, I collided with temptation in its purest form. It was perfectly preserved – as if it had just been sliced – and I recalled the moment I stashed it at the bottom of the freezer. My desire to consume the cake was strong and my will was primed to succumb.

This is the horror of a bad habit. It is always waiting for the perfect moment to rise, strike and destroy.

Our habits manifest from security-seeking behaviors. We actively seek out those things which give us comfort and build routines around them. But since human beings are by nature consumers, the things we consume permeate our minds and bodies and change us over time. Not unlike a plant absorbs water into its cells, people absorb knowledge. What we consume, we secrete. Therefore, it is important to contemplate what we put into our brains and bodies.

We combat bad habits with good ones. Once we identify those

habits that weaken us, we can change them by creating new healthy habits. This can be a challenge. But change is the mechanism by which we achieve our goals. Forming a healthy habit is like strengthening a weak muscle; once it is strong, it can lift more weight. The more stress (via change) it experiences, the stronger it becomes. That is why adversity is an excellent tool for making courageous men out of cowards.

Food is a source of comfort to many people, myself included.

I made a habit of hoarding cake, cookies and candy as a child to address emotional pain. As an adult I learned the non-nutritive qualities of those things and the impotence they have to heal a broken heart. With help from God, I made a decision to change my body, mind and heart. Since my security now rests in faith and not food, I tossed the cake and once again resolved to stop hoarding.

This choice used to be excruciating but now I make it with relative ease. I make a habit to be kind to myself by abstaining from sugar.

St. Charles County Government opens administration, public health and PD buildings to public St. Charles County Government buildings have been closed to the public since March 25 to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and protect the health of the community and county employees. On May 29, the County Administration Building at 201 N. Second St., the Department of Public Health at 1650 Boone’s Lick Rd., both in St. Charles; and the St. Charles County Police Department at101 Sheriff Dierker Ct. in O’Fallon, reopened with modifications to access and services. Remaining county buildings, including courts, reopened Monday, June 1.

“County staff has been working diligently over the past several weeks to make certain buildings are as safe as possible for the public and our employees,” says St. Charles County Executive Steve Ehlmann. “As with most facilities everywhere, our buildings were not constructed with social distancing in mind. We are making modifications and planning for a future with social distancing as the norm.”

Administration Building: Normal operating hours, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, will resume at the Administration Building, but with access limited to the first floor. Window service for the Assessor and Collector of Revenue will be available on that floor as in the past, and window service for the Recorder of Deeds is being added for the reopening. The Sheriff, Finance, Human Resources and Community Development departments will have a representative in the lobby behind a plexiglass shield in a shared space, when needed. Visitors for other departments are encouraged to call and make an appointment in advance; a representative from that department will escort the visitor from the first floor to the appropriate office.

Please note that the Department of Corrections (County Jail), located adjacent to the Administration Building, remains closed to the public until further notice.

Department of Public Health: The Health Services Division of the Department of Public Health will resume some in-person services during normal business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, however, these services will be modified to protect employees and visitors. Services for WIC, vital records and passports will be offered during regular operating hours, but sexually transmitted disease testing will be by appointment only. The Immuniza-

tion Clinic will remain closed but will resume revised services at a later date. The Pet Adoption Center, 4850 Mid Rivers Mall Drive in St. Peters, continues to offer animals for adoption which can be viewed online at sccmo.org/Pets; appointments can be made to view adoptable animals. Animal Control officers are working in the community; Environmental Health inspectors are monitoring businesses for social distancing so routine inspections have not yet resumed. Residents are encouraged to check the Department of Public Health website at sccmo.org/PublicHealth for updated information, or to call 636-949-7400 with questions.

Police Department: The police department will reopen with normal business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Fingerprinting will resume from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, for CCW (carrying a concealed weapon) licensing and sex offender registration. Additional Precautions and Information: Upon entrance to any county building, employees and the public are encouraged to wear cloth facial protection, and everyone is required to have a health screening, including temperature check, before entering. Those with a fever or who have other COVID-19 symptoms will not be permitted to enter the building. Temporary modifications have been made to all buildings to allow for social distancing and flow, including designated entrances and exits with permanent modifications to follow this summer.

Lutheran High School’s Roboteers Club donates face shields to STCCPD

On May 1, students from Lutheran High School’s Roboteers Club donated over 140 PPE face shields to the St. Charles County Police Department. The masks were made by the students and their parents using 3D printers. The department has had a long-standing relationship with the Roboteers. For the past three years, they have assisted the Bomb Disposal Unit in assembling the beeping eggs used in at the annual EGGstravaganza Hunt.

2020 Youth Tour winners announced Cuivre River Electric Cooperative has announced the winners of the 2020 Youth Tour essay contest.

The six top-scoring students, selected as Youth Tour delegates, will each receive a $2,500 college scholarship. Due to the COVID-19 virus, this summer’s trip to Washington, D.C., has been canceled. However, the six delegates will have the opportunity to participate in some future virtual activities planned by the Youth Tour organizers. One speaker that is tentatively scheduled is Mike Schlappi, an inspiring four-time Paralympic medalist and two-time world wheelchair basketball champion. Organizers also hope to sched-

ule an online meeting with Missouri’s congressional leaders for this year’s delegates.

O’Fallon Firefighters Community Outreach surprises three high school students with scholarship awards Fire trucks with lights and sirens on arrived at three O’Fallon homes last week, but they weren’t there for an emergency. They were surprising three high school seniors with $1,200 scholarships.

The students’ parents were let in on the secret, but the students did not know they were selected. They were chosen from a pool of applicants from Fort Zumwalt North High School, Fort Zumwalt West High School, Christian High School, St. Dominic High School and Hope High School.

The surprise deliveries started at Roman Bishop’s home in O’Fallon on May 4. Matthew Lange’s home was next in O’Fallon. The final stop was at the home of Sara Harris in St. Peters.

Since the age of six, he has wanted to be a firefighter, but a few years ago, when he was unable to help his great grandfather during a medical emergency, he knew he had to become a first responder. Lange

excelled academically in high school and his teachers noted that he stood out as a natural leader, who was always there to help others.

• Roman Bishop, Fort Zumwalt North High School: Bishop has his sights set on becoming an orthopedic surgeon. After overcoming two major sport injuries during his middle school and high school sports careers, he developed a desire to help future athletes overcome their injuries and get back to the sports they love.

Bishop is a successful student academically, and his teachers describe him as having a strong work ethic and a passion for science.

He is an active volunteer basketball referee for Upward Sports, and serves as a field manager for the River City Rascals.

• Sara Harris, Hope High School: Sucide and depression are a daily struggle for many high school students. After Harris’ best friend passed away at the age of 16, she knew she wanted to do everything she could to help teens learn to cope and prevent them from feeling alone in this world. After graduation, she will work toward becoming a therapist where she can help teens who are struggling.

Her teachers describe her as a hardworking, determined and self-motivated student who is always there for her peers.

By Brett Auten A couple in South Carolina is hoping to connect some dots.

Pete and Gay Bryant, who live in Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina, found a balloon with possible ties to the area that may have traveled nearly 1,000 miles.

The Bryants have a name, age, city and little else.

“There was a note attached, and you could tell that it had been rained on,” Gay Bryant said. “It said: ‘My name is Braelyn. It is my birthday. I am 8-years-old today. I live in Wentzville. I hope my balloons go far.’ I want to tell her that they did go far. Almost into the ocean, which is maybe where

the rest of them went” Bryant thinks the birthday must have taken place in March or April. Pete Bryant discovered the balloon the week before Easter where it was twisted around a dead tree on the Allandale Plantation. Bryant said the note was written on white paper and handwritten in what looks like orange ink or marker. The silver balloon also had a green ribbon and other ribbons attached to it.

Farmers insurance agent helps donate $1,500 to nonprofit for COVID-19 response efforts As communities across the country continue to face unprecedented circumstances in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Farmers Insurance is granting donations to nonprofits directly related to COVID-19 relief efforts, as nominated by Farmers agents and district managers across the country.

English Language and Culture Institute earns top distinction The St. Charles Community College English Language and Culture Institute (ELCI) works hard to ensure non-native speakers have the opportunity to improve their reading, grammar, composition and speaking skills every day.

In April, their dedication was rewarded. The ELCI received its five-year initial accreditation from the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA).

“SCC is the only community college in Missouri with this honor,” said Dr. Dawn K. Huffman, ELCI chair. “We’re now one of only seven total CEA accredited programs in Missouri and only one of about 300 programs or institutions in the world.”

To obtain accreditation, SCC provided rigorous

evidence of compliance with industry-accepted standards.

“We also demonstrated the constant ability to improve and excel in the intensive English field,” said Huffman. “Only those that demonstrate compliance and continuous improvement are recognized with accreditation.”

The accreditation benefits students by assuring that the program’s services and faculty meet the CEA standards, which were originally created by intensive English professionals. According to the CEA website, these standards allow the “program or institution to gauge its effectiveness against benchmarks set by the profession.” Furthermore, the reporting and reaccreditation required ensure that institutions remain dedicated to the standards and mission.

“We could not have achieved this recognition without the support of our administration and the contribution of several staff and faculty members,” Huffman said. “Because of the reporting requirements and CEA’s systematic review of standards, our work will continue.

Our faculty and staff are always striving to meet best practices.”

When a program is accredited by CEA, students know that they will receive quality instruction, and organizations, companies, and governments that pay for students to learn English can also be assured that they are making a good investment.

“This accreditation is further proof that SCC is committed to cultural diversity on campus. We understand that our community benefits from the variety of perspectives these students provide,” said Huffman.

Two Francis Howell students achieve perfect ACT scores

To many, the number 36 doesn’t carry any special significance. But for two high school students in FHSD, this number represents perfection. Junior Natalie Althof of Francis Howell High School and senior Eric Peasel of Francis Howell Central High School have both achieved a perfect score of 36 on the ACT. Althof hasn’t decided where her college path leads her yet but hopes to major in mechanical engineering and computer science. During her junior year, she has been involved in Math Club, Book Club, robotics, Spanish Club, Art Club, drama and FBLA. Next year, she will be the president of the National Honor Society. “A 36 on the ACT is the highest academic achievement I have ever attained,” said Althof. “I was so happy to make my parents proud of me. I always want to prove to them that I can do better, achieve more.”

Peasel plans on attending the University of Missouri - Columbia in the fall. He will be receiving the Bright Flight Scholarship and a “Perfect Score Scholarship,” which covers all tuition and fees for four years, as well as housing for his first year.

During his time at FHC, he played volleyball and

participated in DECA. “Getting a perfect score means a lot to me,” said Peasel. “I attribute all of my success to FHC, as well as the district as a whole because I’ve been in the district since kindergarten.”

“Earning a perfect score on the ACT is a major accomplishment,” said Director of Secondary Education Dr. Lucas Lammers. “It highlights the students’ supreme level of dedication to academic excellence and reflects the world-class instruction happening in our schools at all levels.”

The ACT is a curriculum-based achievement exam that measures what students have learned in school. It consists of tests in English, mathematics, reading, and science, scored on a scale of 1-36.

The student’s composite score is the average of the four test scores. Students who earn a 36 composite score have mastered all of the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in first-year college courses in the core subject areas. All major four-year colleges and universities across the U.S. accept ACT scores. In 2018, less than 0.2% of tested students received a perfect composite score of 36.

WSD sophomores selected for Missouri Scholars Academy Six high school sophomores from the Wentzville School District have been selected to participate in the Missouri Scholars Academy (MSA), a three-week residential program on the campus of the University of Missouri – Columbia. Nathan Hoenig and Aidan Reed from Holt; Dagon Williams and Jaden Zelidon from Liberty; and Joseph Hess and Ronan Townes from Timberland are among 330 high school sophomores from across Missouri selected for the program. However, in accordance with the University of Missouri’s cancellation of all residential programs due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the MSA has been cancelled for this year.

Founded in 1985, the Missouri Scholars Academy (MSA) celebrates its 35th season this year. The goals of the academy are to help gifted students achieve their full potential and motivate them to use their abilities to attain high standards of achievement, to encourage local schools to improve and expand gifted education programs, and to assist in providing the state with experienced faculty and specialized curriculum for such students. The academy is primarily supported by funds provided by the University of Missouri, the Missouri Legislature, MSA alumni and friends, and by Missouri corporations.

Every public and private high school in the state is allowed to nominate at least one student for the Academy. Academically, students represent the top one-half of

Timberland student earns award for high score on national German exam Joshua Talluto, a sophomore at Timberland High School in the Wentzville School District, has been awarded the Gold Medal and special recognition on the Presidential Honor Roll for outstanding performance on the 2020 National German Exam for High School Students.

Talluto received this award after scoring in the 97th percentile on the Level 3 2020 National German Exam sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG). He is a student in Advanced German 3 at Timberland and his German teacher is Christin Whitehead.

Because he scored above the 90th percentile, he was eligible to compete for a summer study trip to Germany. Following interviews with two college German professors at St. Louis University and Webster University, he was selected out of six candidates to represent the Missouri chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German to compete for 39 summer study trips out of 59 chapters. Unfortunately, he received word last month that the trip for this summer has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Over 18,600 students took the exam this year, which included Talluto and 10 others at Timberland. Additional Timberland students who were also recognized on the Presidential Honor Roll for their performance on the exam include: • Michael Mischkot, Silver Medal, 86th percentile (German 3) • Jacob Herrold, Bronze Medal, 75th percentile (German 3) • Eric Hampson, Bronze Medal, 73rd percentile (German 3) • Gavin White, Bronze Medal, 77th percentile (German 2) • Daniel Larkin, Silver Medal, 89th percentile (German 2)

The National German Exam, now in its 60th year, rewards students through an extensive prize program and provides a means of comparing students in all regions of the U.S. Doug Philipp, German teacher at Cheyenne Mountain High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado and AATG President said, “The outstanding performance of these German students in our national competition brings honor to their school, their district, and their German program. The AATG salutes their tremendous accomplishment and the great work their teachers do.”

Founded in 1926, the AATG represents German teachers at all levels of instruction. The AATG is dedicated to the advancement and improvement of the teaching of language, literature, and culture of the German‐speaking countries.

Bringing baseball back to O’Fallon The O’Fallon Hoots play in the Prospect Wood Bat League with home games at the CarShield Field in O’Fallon.

A recent announcement is that the Prospect League has canceled their 2020 season due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and resulting government reg-

ulations across the five-state league and that the team will still play in 2020.

The first game is currently scheduled for July 2.

“While we are certainly disappointed that the Prospect League has canceled for this summer, we are excited to have baseball at the ballpark in 2020,” Hoots General Manager David Schmoll said. “We have players in the area who have lost their college seasons and want to play as well as fans who want to see baseball. We are committed to providing that for both groups in a safe and responsible manner.”

The Hoots will host 30 games in O’Fallon in a season from July 2 through August 14.

Fedorowski, a therapeutic recreation major, owned a 3.97 GPA on the way to her first CoSIDA Academic All-District Team award.

Fedorowski was a force during the 2020 season, as she was named a Maverik Division II Media All-American for her excellent play in the shortened season. Prior to the canceling of the season, she had scored 24 goals to go along with 21 assists, giving her 45 points through ten games. She had also scooped up 15 ground balls to go along with 15 caused turnovers.

Due to the shortened 2020 season, this year’s All-District Team was decided considering the nominees full collegiate careers.

Over her career, Fedorowski has collected numerous accolades. In 2019, she was a Third-team IWLCA All-American, she earned a spot on the IWLCA firstteam all-region, and was first-team All-RMAC. In 2018, she earned a second-team All-RMAC selection.

She owns the No. 1 spot in program history with 121 caused turnovers. * Great in both categories

aving fun in the kitchen can be an easy way to get kids involved for a family-friendly activity. These Fiesta Snacks call for flavors many kids love stacked up in a way that allows them to aid in the process.

Fiesta Snacks Ingredients: 1 pound chicken, chopped 1/2 cup salsa, divided 1/4 cup sour cream 8 tortillas (8 inches) 1/3 cup refried beans 1/2 cup guacamole 6 ounces shredded cheese In small bowl, mix refried beans and remaining salsa until blended.

Directions: Heat oven to 350 F. In skillet, cook chopped chicken until done.

In medium bowl, mix cooked chicken, 1/4 cup salsa and sour cream until blended.

Lay two tortillas on baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Spread chicken mixture over both tortillas. Place second set of tortillas over

chicken mixture. Spread guacamole over top tortillas. Place third set of tortillas on top and spread refried bean mixture over tortillas. Place fourth set of tortillas on top and sprinkle shredded cheese over tortillas.

Bake 10 minutes until cheese is melted.

The resurgence of drive-in theaters

Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

n the early 2000’s, I was privileged to meet Joe Williams, a writer who was then the film critic for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. A kind and well-spoken man, he loved movies and especially enjoyed watching them at drive-in theaters.

In some of his pieces, Williams would talk about Richard M. Hollingshead, Jr., the man credited with the concept of mixing cars with big outdoor screens. It was never a surprise to see Mr. Williams’ byline on a piece referencing “Ozoners,” the affectionate nickname for drive-ins.

Growing up in the 1960’s and 70’s, my parents would frequently take my brothers and sisters and I to see movies at a local drive-in.

We would load up the station wagon with soft drinks and snacks and settle in for several hours of cinematic enjoyment. In those pre-social distancing days, the only time we’d really interact with other people was during a trip to the snack bar. For our family, this was an economical way to see several movies over the summer months. When my friends and I were old enough to drive, we’d inevitably head to a drive-in on the weekend.

radio or bring a battery-operated portable one. I’m not sure if Richard Hollingshead had social distancing in mind when he opened his first drive-in, but the concept works well here.

Modern technology also made “Pop-Up” drivein theaters a reality. Ben Hooper at UPI recently reported that the Kathedral Event Center in Hammonton, New Jersey started showing movies on their parking lot. For their “Karpool Cinema”, cars are spaced approximately 10 feet apart to be in line with social distancing.

ABC affiliate WPIV in Philadelphia even posted on-camera interviews with patrons who were happy to get out of the house for some family-friendly entertainment.

I’ve written more than once about how much I miss sitting in a theater with my snacks with other movie lovers close-by to share the experience. On Twitter, however, Regal Cinemas recently posted their intention to stay closed until they can show movies in a safe environment. Until it’s safe to go back to the cinema, drive-in’s and innovative pop-up theaters provide a very welcome way to get out of the house and enjoy the movies.

Over time, though, once-popular drive-in theaters in the Bi-State region closed for various reasons. Located at 9348 Watson Road, the “66 Park In Theater” was a Crestwood landmark until It was torn down to make way for a shopping center. During the summer of 1982, families in their cars waited in long lines on Lemay Ferry to see “E.T.” at the South Twin Drive-In. A year later, however, this venerable establishment gave way to yet another shopping plaza.

In the current climate, though, drive-ins have seen a resurgence in popularity. Broadcasting the sound in FM stereo, the Skyview Drive-In in Belleville, Illinois, for instance, opens at 6:30 p.m. every night. As their website points out, those iconic window speakers are long gone but patrons can use their car

here’s plenty of negative to be found with this quarantine thing, but we should look for the positive as well. As the old adage goes: Every cloud has a silver lining. Maybe, but in these times it’s more like: Every woman has a silver lining and is in desperate need of a hairstylist!

That aside, let’s try and focus on the positive.

One good thing is that we don’t have to bother about wardrobe selection. We’re trapped inside with nowhere to go and no one to impress.

My clothing selection of choice is a graying set of sweats. They’re comfy, convenient and if I want to add a little flare, I toss my old tattered blankie around the shoulders to set off the ensemble.

My husband’s outfits have dwindled to near zero.

There’s no one to entertain and everyone else is hunkered down inside their houses so he wanders around in his skivvies and enjoys pantless Thursdays. He takes full advantage of it since nobody keeps track of the days anymore.

Me: “How come you’re not wearing pants today?”

Him: “It’s pantless Thursday.”

“Wrong. It’s Wednesday.”

“Oh, well. I’m getting a jump on it. I’ve always been an over-achiever.”

Wearing a mask is a positive. Oh sure, old oxygen tends to recirculate inside it until you pass out in the produce aisle from too much carbon dioxide. But on the bright side; we ladies no longer have to wear make-up and can stick our tongue out at people as they pass by and they’ll never know.

Social distancing has its benefits. We don’t have to make up an excuse to keep our distance from annoying relatives. Before, we’d have to invent a communicable disease to stay home from family

gatherings.

Aunt Fiona: “Hi guys. Come on over and listen to little Amelia’s first accordion lesson.”

Me: “How about another time? We’ve got… yardwork…yes…lots of yardwork to do.”

“Yardwork can wait. Besides, I’ve made my famous jalapeno raisin tarts.”

Me: “But we’ve also come down with the Ebola and developed giant leaking sores all over. Next time for sure!”

Silence.

So now we’ve got a real excuse and don’t have to rely on that old adage: If at first you don’t succeed lie, lie, lie.
