Wentzville Middle School sixth-graders organize a trash can artwork contest to help tackle litter

By Brett Auten Consider it an art gallery that comes with a guaranteed good feeling.

Inspired by a walkabout, Wentzville Middle School sixth-graders organized a trash can artwork contest to raise public awareness to help tackle litter in Wentzville parks and the community.

The project came about as this year marks the 14th anniversary of the GREEN partnership with General Motors, the city of Wentzville and Earth Force, where students take the lead on civic action projects.

This was one of six projects where classes followed a six-step process to gather community data, research policies, and practices and develop and action plan.

And the kids did all of the heavy lifting.

They sought out the stakeholders and partners, like Friends of the Wentzville Parks, for support and sought donations to make the project possible. They developed contest guidelines, awards and even

produced a rap music ad to entice other students and the public to participate.

Winning artwork with a “nature” theme is featured from school-age students and the public on 12 cans in various parks around Wentzville.

Kelly Dunlap, an engineer technician with the city who worked closely with the program, said that this was a great example of Wentzville’s mission of being a community of neighbors working together to build a better future.

“The idea came from one of the students during a brainstorming session,” Dunlap said. “She shared it with the class and they immediately jumped on the idea and ran with it.”

Jamie Paige is the city’s stormwater management coordinator and she too saw the responsibility shouldered by the young residents.

“The kids were in the driver’s seat,” Paige said. “They tackled the budget, did the outreaching and marketing. Each student

found their role.”

The program started in the fall and continued through to springtime. On May 1, the winners were selected, designs were finalized and sent into production to be vinyl wrapped. The barrels were on display during Wentzville Days and brought to a recent aldermen meeting.

The GREEN Program that GM and Earth Force offer - along with community partnerships with the city and Friends of the Parks - gave the students a voice and a platform to stand on.

St. Charles County girl represents Missouri in July Brenna Wagoner of St. Charles County was recently named World’s Junior Teen Miss Missouri Tourism after competing in the state finals in Maryville. World’s Miss Tourism is an international program that promotes community outreach, poise, confidence, and personal development while bringing attention to area highlights of the candidates home states or countries.

Brenna’s favorite thing about tourism in Missouri is all the wonderful state parks and interesting caves you can visit. She

is a seventh grader and enjoys being a member of St. Peters Figure Skating Association, her school band and Girl Scouts.

In her spare time she enjoys camping, reading, crafting, and making homemade body care products. She is active in many community service projects, but her favorite endeavor is helping animals in need.

Brenna will compete in July against other state Junior Teen representatives in Tennessee for the international title of World’s Junior Teen Miss Tourism.

The students hope the project will inspire others to recycle and properly dispose of their trash in the community.

“Looking back, I’m extremely impressed with how the students conducted themselves,” Dunlap said. “They met some intense deadlines. I’m over the moon when it comes to their determination.”

Throughout the remainder of the year, the St. Charles County Parks and Recreation Department, along with St. Louis Area Mountain Bikers (SLAMB) and Gateway Off-Road Cyclists (GORC), will host Mountain Bike Night Rides at county parks known for great biking trails. These challenging rides are open to experienced cyclists and offer an opportunity to experience park trails after hours.

Volunteers from SLAMB and GORC lead the rides. Each ride is allowed three hours; however, the length of the ride is dependent on the environment and trail conditions, number of riders, ability levels and number of volunteer leaders. The rides begin at the trailhead of each park and signage is posted along the road to direct participants to the starting location. Riders must wear helmets and have a 600 lumen light to participate.

The rides are free; registration is not necessary, but encouraged. Those planning to participate should check the Rainout Line on the website, or

call 636-707-0011, prior to the start time. Heavy rain, even days before the event, can make natural surface trails unusable. For a complete schedule or more information, visit www.stccparks.org and click on the online registration link.

Understanding sky condition terms Many folks have asked what is the difference between partly sunny and partly cloudy?

There is a difference.

This isn’t the story about GooseyLoosey running to tell her friends that she thinks the sky is falling, but rather a perspective on why certain terminology is used to describe sky conditions.

The terminology used for sky cover in a forecast is based on the predominant sky condition for the day or night based on the percentage of the sky that is covered by opaque clouds. Opaque clouds are those that are not transparent – which means the sun or moon can’t penetrate through them.

Let me explain.

If the sky is expected to be 88 to 100 percent covered with opaque clouds then cloudy or overcast wording will be used to define the sky cover. This is typically used when a high probability of precipitation is forecast.

Mostly cloudy skies are when the majority of the sky is covered in opaque clouds or between 70 to 87

percent. Now, here is where it gets fun. What is the difference between partly sunny and mostly cloudy? The answer is simple, sort of. Partly sunny and mostly cloudy skies are when at least 51-69 percent of the sky is covered with opaque clouds. Forecasters will be more prone to use partly sunny for the lower of this percentage and mostly cloudy for the higher end of the range. In addition, since we don’t have sun at night, mostly cloudy would be used to describe the nighttime sky cover.

Mostly sunny or partly cloudy skies are forecast when 26 to 50 percent of the sky is filled with opaque clouds— again the lower side of the percent would be used for mostly sunny and the higher end of the percentage range would use partly cloudy. At night, partly cloudy would be the default choice.

Sunny and mostly clear skies is when six to 25 percent of the sky is expected to be covered with clouds—for the daytime forecast sunny would be used

and for the nighttime forecast mostly clear would be used. Sunny and clear wording is used when zero to five percent of the sky is covered with opaque clouds. Here again, we would use sunny for day and clear for night.

These sky parameters are used by the National Weather Service to define the percentage of the sky that are or will be covered by opaque clouds during the particular forecast period.

Get ready to race at the 33rd annual Firecracker Run

The O’Fallon Chamber of Commerce & Industries is proud to host the 33rd annual Firecracker Run presented by Mercy on July 4 in O’Fallon. The race begins at 7 a.m. and consists of a 10K, 5K and a one mile fun run.

Registration is now open, and early bird pricing is available through the end of May. Firecracker action takes place at CarShield Field – home of the River City Rascals (located at 900 T.R. Hughes Blvd. in O’Fallon).

Runners will finish the race over home plate and be greeted with exclusive access to the famous Runners Only Area to partake in amazing food, drinks and fun. Runners will get attendance prizes and top finishers will be recognized in an awards ceremony.

“It’s the most fun you can have before 10 a.m. on the Fourth of July.” Said Amos Reed, Firecracker Committee Chair.

In addition to the running action, there are also lots of family-friendly activities everyone

Portion of Route N in St. Charles County to be closed for two months A portion of Route N in St. Charles County will be closed for two months. Route N between Dardenne Farms and Colonial Green closed starting on June 1. The road will remain closed through the end of July. Anyone who lives in Dardenne Farms or west of there will have to come and go from Route K while anyone in Colonial Green or east of there will have to come and go from Mid Rivers Mall Drive.

The work is necessary so crews can replace a

large box culvert under the road. This work is part of an ongoing project in the area that will widen Route N from Eagle Hill Lane to Weiss Road. The road will also be raised about twoand-a-half feet and shoulders and guardrail will be added in certain areas.

Unemployment falls to 2.9 percent in St. Charles County marking 16-year low

The April 2017 unemployment rate in St. Charles County fell to 2.9 percent, a 16-year low, according to the latest, not-seasonally-adjusted figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) of the U.S. Department of Labor. The last time it was this low was in May 2001.

The unemployment rate for that same period was 2.7 percent in Wentzville, 2.8 percent in O’Fallon, 3.1 percent in St. Peters, and 3.2 percent in St. Charles City. These are the largest municipalities in the county.

“The local labor market hasn’t been this tight in a very long time,” says Scott J. Drachnik, Director of the St. Charles County Department of Workforce & Business Development. “This is a perfect storm between Baby Boomers retiring, companies creating a lot of new jobs, and this period of full employment that is resulting in fewer job applicants.”

Based on historic trends, Drachnik said a slight uptick in unemployment is expected this summer when high school and

college graduates without jobs are included in the monthly figures.

“Because of the fierce competition to find and retain qualified labor, we are starting to see some employers increase their wage and benefits packages. Others also are revamping their work culture as our economy shifts from a Baby Boomer-driven workforce to one more focused on Millennial needs and desires,” Drachnik says. “It’s basic supply and demand.”

The St. Charles County Assessor mailed over 43,000 Personal Property Notices of Assessment Change by June 1. Taxpayers who reported additional personal property or made corrections to their 2017 personal property assessments will receive the notice. The mailing is part of County Assessor Scott Shipman’s efforts to further involve taxpayers in the assessment process, with the goal of making it less burdensome.

“This notice alerts taxpayers of the change in their personal property assessment and allows time to appeal the value within the statutory ap-

peal timeframe,” says Shipman. “Our intention is to help citizens avoid issues at the end of the year when they receive their tax bills. At that point, it is too late to appeal the assessed value.”

Shower of Love raises over $112,000 to benefit St. Charles County families in need

Nine nonprofit agencies throughout St. Charles County worked together in April to help its tiniest residents. Included in this year’s collection were 130,099 diapers, 306,819 baby wipes, 1,079 containers of formula, 1,290 bottles of body wash, lotion and shampoo and thousands of other items. To date, over $881,622 has been raised through the Shower of Love.

This community-based event is a collaborative effort benefiting ten agencies that serve St. Charles County fragile families. These agencies include Birthright-St. Charles, Birthright-Wentzville, Mary Queen of Angels, Nurses for Newborns, Our Lady’s Inn, St. Louis Crisis Nursery, Sts. Joachim & Ann Care Service, ThriVeSt. Louis and Youth in Need.

The Shower of Love was created in 2007 after the Community and Children’s Resource Board (CCRB) became

alarmed about the number of critical child abuse incidences in St. Charles County. The goal is to supply agencies with baby-care items for moms in need and their babies.

During the month of April, churches, businesses, schools and clubs held collection drives to benefit the Shower of Love and on April 27, the event culminated with over 400 volunteers collecting baby-care items at 17 grocery stores in St. Charles County to include participating Walmart, Shop ‘n Save, Dierbergs, and Mid Towne Market.

“We want moms in our community to know that when they’re struggling and need someone and someplace to turn to, that these agencies are available with caring staff, providing hope and supports to help them through stressful and difficult times in their lives,” says Michelle McElfresh, Shower of Love Coordinator.

“We are humbled and amazed at the generosity of our county’s residents, churches and businesses that wrap their arms around the project and give so generously. Women needing help in meeting basic needs of

their babies or other services should contact the individual agencies for assistance,” says Michelle McElfresh The Community and Children’s Resource Board (CCRB) is the administrator the Community Children’s Service Fund, a fund created when St. Charles County passed a 1/8cent sales tax measure in November 2004. The funds are dedicated for services to St. Charles County children and youth, and is awarded to local agencies providing services for the growing unmet mental health needs of our community youth.

MKS has been partnering with Joy in Haiti for a few years, collecting dance supplies for the kids and fabric and sewing materials for their seamstress ministry.

In 2015 MKS won the O’Fallon scarecrow contest and gave the prize money to Joy in Haiti. In addition to the teachers, Revelle’s daughter and father will be making the journey as well.

“God has been preparing me for many years for this opportunity,” said Revelle. “And I am excited to go and see what God has in store for us there.

I cannot wait to meet all of the girls, dance with

them and equip those who are interested with tools that will allow them to lead worship through dance. I am thrilled for my nine-year-old daughter to meet the girls and also to see what life is like in other parts of the world. My dad will be a huge blessing, sharing his talents of carpentry and handiness. Ms. Vicki will be teaching some tumbling as well as helping me with dance.”

You know what’s frustrating…besides walking around in public all day with a giant piece of lettuce wedged in between your tooth? Now, I’m not saying this happened to me, but I might add, it’s even more frustrating when no one has the common courtesy to inform you about it. And yes, these very same people are only too quick to stare at you like you’re a crazed hobo who never practices oral hygiene when a simple, “Ma’am, you might want to check a mirror. It looks like you’ve been making out with a salad bar,” would solve the problem.

But I digress. You know what’s even more frustrating than green teeth? Technology. Nothing is so useful yet so useless as technology.

Case and points: GPS’s were designed to take a person to any destination, thus doing away with those annoying paper maps, which could never be read accurately or folded back up correctly. They were thus jammed into the glove compartment only to be retrieved after a major beverage spill occurred and no extra napkins were available.

So we were excited to use this new toy one evening while visiting another state. After developing a strong hankering for some Chinese food, we plunked out the coordinates and began our journey. The area was dark and unfamiliar. Who knew what dangers lurked around these strange streets?

Good thing this handy little device could guide us through the unknown.

After numerous twists and turns and miles away from civilization, we were led down a dark alley and right into the parking lot of the local graveyard. All we wanted was Kung Pao chicken!

We hoped this was not an indication of its secret ingredients.

Second point: My in-laws dislike technology. The old on/off button on the television is high-tech enough. As such, they can barely operate the DVD player.

They refer to their step-by-step instructions and visual charts and must have The Geek Squad on speed dial in case all fails.

One day we smugly introduced them to Siri; our nifty little butler-in-a-box.

“You really should get one of these smartphones.

Siri can answer any question. Try it,” I urged.

My mother-in-law warily spoke into the phone, “Who is Ingrid Bergman?”

Siri replied, “It doesn’t look like you have an app for Angry Birds. You may want to try the app store.”

I smiled meekly.

She looked at me as if I had lawn clippings in my teeth.

Archeological Humorist: someone who unearths absurdity and hilarity in strange and unusual places including public restrooms, the lint filter, and church meetings.

Six WSD juniors have been selected to participate in the Missouri Scholars Academy (MSA), a three week residential program to be held June 11 through July 1 on the campus of the University of Missouri-Columbia. Jasper Pendino and Sarah Sargent from Holt, Zachary Myers and Rishi Kondapaneni from Liberty and Nathaniel Beattie and Sofia Angel from Timberland are among 330 high school juniors from across Missouri selected for the program.

Founded in 1985, the Missouri Scholars Academy celebrates its 33rd season this year. The goals of the academy are to help gifted students achieve their full potential and motivate them to use their abilities to attain high standards of achievement, to encourage local schools to improve and expand gifted education programs and to assist in providing the state with experienced faculty and specialized curriculum for such students. The 2017 academy is primarily supported by the Missouri State

Legislature, with additional funds provided by the University of Missouri, by MSA alumni and friends and by Missouri corporations.

Every public and private high school in the state is allowed to nominate at least one student for the academy. Academically, students represent the top one-half of one percent of their class in the state of Missouri. No grades or credits are awarded through the program, but students attending MSA are exposed to a wide range of activities as well as intensive instruction in their chosen area of specialization. The faculty is composed of outstanding teachers from high schools throughout the state. Guest speakers, performers, discussions and career education will be combined with extracurricular and social activities to round out the curriculum.

More than 10,000 Missouri high school students and teachers have participated in MSA since its inception in 1985.

Ethan Rodden, a senior from Timberland High School in the Wentzville School District, has been named to the Missouri Journalism Education Association (MJEA) All-State Journalism Team.

The All-State Journalism Team recognizes those students who have proven themselves to be indispensable to their respective school media; those who are “most valuable players” — whose leadership, energy, dedication, and expertise make their publications possible, but whose main contributions often occur behind the scenes.

Ten winners were selected from applicants across the state by a team of three outof-state MJE members with over 75 years of combined experience between them as publications advisers of newspaper, yearbook and broadcast programs. Students are nominated by their journalism advisors.

Rodden has been involved in Timberland’s Wolf ’s Howl newspaper for two years. He has also been involved in the

THS Journalism Advisor Ida Hoffman said the newspaper has had its challenges in recent years, but that Rodden’s dedication held the publication together.

“This year has been unique for the THS newspapers.

Newspaper was rough last year, and we had only two students return to staff. At the beginning of the year, due to medical concerns, one of these students also had to leave the staff. This left Ethan to manage the paper on his own.

The catch: there were only two other students on staff.

So, after lengthy discussions, Ethan decided to transfer into the Intro to Journalism class. That is where he spent the academic year molding nine students (the majority of whom are freshmen), into awesome newspaper staffers, while communicating with the rest of his staff (in a different hour) electronically.”

Cuivre River grant gives transportation program a lift A hot, nutritious lunch and numerous fun activities await seniors who visit the Wentzville Senior Center. And for those who cannot drive, rides are available from the Wentzville Senior Center Transportation Inc. The nonprofit organization’s purpose is to provide transportation to and from the senior center, located at 506 S. Linn in Wentzville.

Thanks to a $1,500 Operation Round Up grant, the program has additional funds to support its mission. The grant funds will cover vehicle maintenance, gas and driver stipends. At least one regular visitor to the senior center, now in her 90s, has been using the service for at least 25 years.

“If it wasn’t for the van, she would not be here,” said Carol Powelson-Merz, senior center director.

The transportation service is available only to adults who are 60 years and older and reside within a 10-mile radius of the senior center. Lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

senior center. The facility is open weekdays from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Some of the activities held include bingo, trivia, dancing and games.

The group’s intent is to help seniors remain independent by being able to leave their home to enjoy a meal and stay active. Twice a week, after visiting the senior center, riders can go shopping in Wentzville to purchase groceries or other necessities. The transportation program averages 20 to 25 riders each month.

Wentzville Senior Center Transportation Inc. is overseen by a volunteer board that meets monthly. All of its funding comes from fundraisers, donations and grants. The transportation board is a separate entity of the senior center.

“Our goal is to have a reliable vehicle to provide this sustainable service,” said Joyce Zollmann, the group’s treasurer.

“We request a $4 donation for each day’s transportation, however, no one is turned away because they can’t pay.”

Mathnasium of St. Peters celebrates grand opening with ribbon cutting Mathnasium of St. Peters North celebrated their grand opening with a ribbon cutting on May 11.

The learning center, located at 7123 Mexico Road in St. Peters, focuses solely on math and operates on the core belief that virtually any child can excel in the subject.

Heat grill to medium-high.

First Impact Parent Program takes place from 9 - 10:30 a.m. at Spencer Road Branch Community Commons at 427 Spencer Road in St. Peters. First Impact is a traffic safety program that educates parents about Missouri’s Graduated Driver License (GDL) law as well as provides them with the tools they need to monitor, coach and support their new teen driver.

Genealogy classes will be offered through the Renaud Spirit Center, and taught by members of the Caroline Close Stuart Chapter, NSDAR (National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution) at 2650 Tri Sport Circle in O’Fallon. The class starts at 8:30 a.m. and will cover beginning information about how to start a family tree, where to locate documents and how to organize the information collected. The afternoon class held the same day begins at 1 p.m. and will explore the uses and benefits of DNA testing for genealogists. It will also look at how to document Native American ancestry. Each class will end with information on how to become a member of the DAR. DAR Chapter members will also be on hand to help with research road blocks. June 24-25: Amateur Radio Field Day

On the fourth weekend of June, more than 40,000 radio amateurs will gather with their clubs, groups or simply with friends to operate from remote locations. The American Radio Relay League (ARRL), the national association for Amateur Radio, sponsors this event. The ARRL Field Day is an event designed to simulate an emergency or disaster situation where Amateur Radio operators, commonly known as “hams,” set up radio equipment in the field to demonstrate the ability to work reliably under any conditions, from almost any location, and create an independent communications network.

Radio operators will attempt to make contact with other stations across the country and around the world; testing the readiness of Amateur Radio Emergency Communications. Without a doubt, Gal Gadot has become everyone’s favorite Amazon warrior. Her performance in “Wonder Woman” could conceivably turn the tide around for the DC Universe movies and make Marvel Studios executives start looking over their shoulders.

This weekend, another female warrior joins the cinematic fray, but this one is based on a real person. The impressive Kate Mara stars in “Megan Leavey,” the story of an American soldier who refuses to give up on her best friend, even under the worst of conditions. Directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, this is an impressive, almost understated film about real heroes.

During the Iraq war, Leavey completes basic training and is assigned to work with the K9 corps. Initially, her duties involve cleaning out kennels and acting as a human practice dummy. After much lobbying, she becomes the handler of Rex, a rather aggressive German shepherd. Though frightened of him at first, the young Marine bonds with her new friend.

Leavey and her four-legged partner are deployed to Iraq,

where they save many lives thanks to Rex’s keen nose. When they both return stateside after two tours of duty, Leavey wants to adopt Rex, but runs into some military snafus and roadblocks.

Kate Mara is an amazing actress who turns in a fresh, honest performance in “Megan Leavey.”

The role allows the actress to delve into the war hero’s personal life and her combat experiences overseas. Mara tackles the role with a calm steady hand, embracing all the qualities that make the real-life Leavey intriguing.

With just a small role in the film, “Harry Potter” star Tom Felton makes quite an impression in “Megan Leavey.” As Andrew Dean, an experienced dog handler and mentor to Leavey, Felton turns this small part into

a standout performance. The same can be said for musician Common, who definitely enjoys his role as Leavey’s commanding officer.

Edie Falco doesn’t fare as well as the title character’s rather shrill and demanding mother, Jackie. Will Patton also is wasted as Jim, Jackie’s second husband.

These characters, though necessary for plot development, add little value to the film.

If there’s any fault to be had here, though, it’s with writers Pamela Gray, Annie Mumolo and Tim Lovestedt. Based on the fact-checking movie websites, the writers took several liberties with Leavey’s story. Artistic license is one thing, but the real, unvarnished story of two brave warriors can stands on its own.

Thankfully, the most memorable portions of the film are true-tolife.

Mara and the four-legged actor playing Rex carry “Megan Leavey,” making it a satisfying, true-life story of courage and friendship. Cowperthwaite avoids making this a typical wartime drama, keeping the focus on the bond between two brave Marines.
