By Brett Auten Two years ago, David Frei was a world-class endurance athlete. He especially excelled in adventure racing, either winning or finishing with his team in the top three in the world on three different occasions.

Frei, 53, has lived throughout the region for his entire life, including a stop in Lake St. Louis. He has always loved challenges and the outdoors and anything to do with running, mountain biking and paddling. Frei eventually became a member of the Adventure Racing co-ed team for Team Alpine Shop.

Adventure racing (also called expedition racing) is a multi-disciplinary team sport involving navigation over an unmarked wilderness course with races extending anywhere from two hours, up to two weeks in length.

“Anything to do with dirt, water and navigation,” Frei said. “I was always more interested than just fitness.”

Recently diagnosed with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), a disorder that affects the function of nerves and muscles, Frei was determined to continue to ride the trails.

If not on the national competitive circuit, there was ample opportunity to ride trails in the region he was familiar with.

As the disease progressed, he went from riding a standard mountain bike to using a pedal-assisted bicycle, and now can ride only a trike-style mountain bike on the trails. Frei soon found out that the trike-style bike was too wide to cross bridges, including one at Bangert Island Park, located at 1704 S River Rd. in St. Charles, which was one of the few park trails Frei could still ride.

“I was the most fit person you knew two years ago,” Frie said. “Being handicapped, these problems are new to me. The little obstacles can do you in.”

Frei made a post about the predicament on his blog, davidfreiblog.com. After reading about Frei’s concerns on his blog, members of Gateway Off-Road Cyclists (GORC), approached the St. Charles County Parks Department about widening the bridge. The park staff quickly came together to build a new bridge; steel beams set, bridge decking assembled, and after more than 1,300 joints were welded together, a new bridge was constructed and installed in the park. The new bridge is four-feet wide and 20-feet in length, twice as wide as the old bridge, and crosses over a slough on River Link Trail near the entrance to the park.

The night Frei discovered the bridge, it couldn’t have come at a more opportune time.

From his blog, he wrote: “The timing could

not have been better! I had gotten a bit depressed lately as my world was starting to get rather small … I feel very loved in this world.

What a beautiful ride and what a difference it makes to have a part of the world opened back up to you.”

Friends and family celebrated the new bridge with a Bridge Over Bangert ride and beer party.

“It was a little crusade that I had nothing do with,” Frei said.

St. Charles County Parks Director Ryan Graham said there had been an excellent relationship with the cycling community over the years.

Nearly four miles of natural-surface trail is available for hikers and bicyclists to enjoy. Bangert Island is a 160-acre park located on an island off the historic Katy Trail in St. Charles. The terrain in the park is relatively flat with soft soil conditions. The wooded-lined paths offer scenic views of the adjacent Missouri River and are home to countless wildlife species and native flora.

With a different band and food truck lineup each Tuesday evening, get set for a great summer of free music at O’Fallon Jammin’ outdoor concerts in Civic Park from 6:30 – 9 p.m., through Aug. 21. Civic Park is located at 308 Civic Park Drive in downtown O’Fallon.

New park property to bring greater recreational opportunities along the Mississippi River In March, the St. Charles County Parks Department closed on the purchase of 7.73 acres of land between Kampville Drive and Huster Road along the Mississippi River.

Formerly the site of the privately-owned Riverside Harbor, the county envisions that this property will be used to promote outdoor recreation on the Mississippi River and Dardenne Creek, such as kayaking, canoeing, boating and other water sports, as well as camping, fishing and hunting. This segment of the Mississippi River, known as Alton Lake, is 40,000 acres and 38 miles long and is a popular summer destination close to home.

ramp will be known as Riverside Landing and will reopen to the public in late summer. It will close this winter for a major renovation that will include camping (electric and full hook-ups), a pavilion, water play area and playground, new boat ramp and docks, kayak launch area and public restrooms.

“We have discussed the possibility of constructing a ‘blue way’ with a kayak launching area at 370 Lakeside Park with the city of St. Peters,” says St. Charles County Executive Steve Ehlmann. “This will provide residents and visitors the opportunity to float approximately two miles on Dardenne Creek to the Riverside Land-

ing. And, we are looking at ways to connect to the Boschert Greenway and trails in the city of St. Charles. This will be a great park for those who want to explore the outdoors by boat, bike or foot.”

The St. Charles County Parks system began in 1997, late for a county parks system as most were developing in the early to mid-1900s. Voters elected that year to pass a dedicated use tax that created the regional parks system. Just 20 years young, the Parks Department still is acquiring park acreage to ensure that greenspace is protected in St. Charles County and that the regional county parks system that voters wanted continues to grow.

St. Charles County Police Chief named to state homeland security council St. Charles County Police Chief David Todd has been selected by the Missouri Police Chief ’s Association to represent its membership on Missouri’s Homeland Security Advisory Council (HSAC). Todd will join leaders from other state agencies in ensuring that state and local homeland security plans on terrorism and disaster preparedness are executed and coordinated efficiently.

“Chief Todd is an excellent choice,” says County Executive Steve Ehlmann. “There is no one more qualified to fill this role.

The chief ’s extensive experience in all areas of law enforcement, including emergency management, homeland security, SWAT and special operations make him an invaluable addition to this council.”

Expanded income maximums offer WIC services to more families To provide more assistance to growing families, the St. Charles County Division of Health Services — in partnership with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) — announces the expansion of income eligibility guidelines for participation in the Women, Infants and Children Program (WIC). The new guidelines are effective through March 31, 2019.

To qualify for the St. Charles County WIC program, participants must earn less than the established income maximums, live in Missouri and be individually determined to be at nutrition risk by a health professional. Persons interested in applying should make an appointment by phone at 636949-7402.

Below are the household income qualification guidelines for families of two-to-five members in St. Charles County. Shower of Love raises over $84,000 to benefit St. Charles County families in need During the month of April, churches, businesses, schools and clubs held collection drives to benefit the 12th annual Shower of Love, culminating on Thursday, April 26 with many volunteers collecting baby-care items at 17 grocery stores in St. Charles County including area Walmart, Shop ‘n Save, Dierbergs, and Midtowne Market stores. All donations are distributed to nine local non-profits serving St. Charles County’s fragile families and children.

The Shower of Love, a countywide baby item collection drive hosted by the Community & Children’s Resource Board, collected over 12,000 baby items and cash donations valued over $84,000. Included

in this year’s collection were 79,000 diapers; 209,500 baby wipes; 635 containers of formula; 1,678 bottles of body wash, lotion and shampoo; and thousands of other items. To date, over $966,000 has been raised through the Shower of Love.

The community-based event is a collaborative effort benefiting Birthright St. Charles, Birthright of Wentzville, Mary Queen of Angels, Nurses for Newborns, Our Lady’s Inn, St. Louis Crisis Nursery, Sts. Joachim & Ann Care Service, ThriVe-St. Louis, and Youth in Need. The Shower of Love was created in 2007 after the Community and Children’s Resource Board (CCRB) became alarmed about the number of

critical child abuse incidences in St. Charles County. Community members came together with the goal to alleviate financial stress for new parents, therefore decreasing the risk of child neglect or abuse.

“Shower of Love supports hundreds of parents and babies each year. Each donation has a huge impact for a family in need. We want parents in our community to know that when they’re struggling and need someone and someplace to turn to, there are agencies available with caring staff, providing hope and support to help them through stressful and difficult times in their lives,” says Jeanne Spencer, Shower of Love Coordinator.

Wounds that refuse to heal need special care

By Stephanie Sandberg, DO What type of patients do you see?

We see a variety of patients. Some patients may have had a surgical procedure that is not healing as fast as they expected, or even vein wounds. Others have diabetes, with common wounds in their feet and toes.

We also see patients that may not be getting enough blood flow to their feet and legs. We see wounds that are not healing in the normal fashion - sometimes they just need dressings or cleanings. Other times, it requires more intensive therapy.

At what point should I seek help?

Call us or your primary care physician anytime you have open wound. It’s very common for wounds to get infected and cause further problems, even a loss of limb, which is something we obviously want to avoid.

What are the common causes of these types of wounds?

The most common wounds we see are from diabetics. Diabetics lose some of the blood supply and their sugars are irregular at times, which causes problem in their feet and toes. That’s a great reason to see a primary care physician on a regular basis; they do a foot evaluation at every checkup to look for wounds or breakdowns in the skin. People with diabetes are at high risk.

We also see wounds that can result from surgeries, including orthopedic, back, general surgery and abdominal surgery. Typically, patients just aren’t progressing as fast as the original surgeon thought they would.

What is the initial visit like?

Patients will be seen by one of our five wound care certified physicians with backgrounds in surgical, infectious, medical or vascular. The physicians work together to give patients the best care. On the initial visit, we’ll evaluate and try to determine the cause of the wound.

How often do patients come to see you?

We usually see them every week at the beginning to really get an idea of how their wound is going to respond to some of the treatments and make sure they are on the right road to healing. We also coordinate home health nursing if it’s needed, and can order dressings for patients to be sent to their home. It’s just part of coordinating the complete care and healing of this wound.

How effective is the treatment?

At the beginning, we give the patient an idea of how long it will take. But, we can heal most wounds with-

in 12 weeks. There are quite a few options we have now to close wounds that we didn’t have several years ago.

Does insurance cover wound care?

Yes they do, in a variety of ranges. We assess insurance coverage on the first visit. There are different treatments we use to treat wounds, and all of the treatments are run through insurance.

WSD students earn fire truck rides to school for outstanding attendance The Wentzville School District and the Wentzville Fire Protection District (WFPD) teamed up again this year to reward elementary students who have excellent attendance and have laid the groundwork for future success. During the last full week of school, one lucky fifth grader from each elementary school in the WSD got a ride to school on a WFPD fire truck as a reward for their K-5 attendance and achievement. As an annual event, this celebration is intended to inspire all elementary students to achieve perfect attendance if possible.

Discovery Ridge Elementary receives national recognition for character education program

Discovery Ridge Elementary in the Wentzville School District has received national recognition for a program aimed at providing students and families an opportunity to learn about different cultures within their school community.

The Character Education Partnership (CEP) has recognized Discovery Ridge for Passport Night, naming it a 2018 Promising Practice.

Passport Night is an annual event where approximately 30 school families have tables where they display cultural artifacts, food and crafts. Families attending the event are greeted with doors painted with how to say “hello” in each country’s language and students receive a “passport” on which to document how to say “hello” and receive a stamp as they visit each table. Entertainment has included dancing, martial arts and singing.

“As students learn more about the cultures of others, they gain empathy and a sense of belonging, value and respect,” said Discovery Ridge Principal Laura Bates.

A third-grade teacher who hosted a table from Trinidad and Tobago shared, “The event as a whole has increased our school’s cultural awareness. Students are having more conversations about their cultural backgrounds and it has prompted those conversations in the classroom too. Students and staff are celebrating their diversity and engaging in more activities that allow all of us to learn about each other and our community. I also think that it has allowed teachers to incorporate more into the curriculum that relates to the diverse student backgrounds, in turn making lessons more engaging. I personally have learned so much about my

On the fourth weekend of June, more than 40,000 radio amateurs throughout North America will gather with their clubs, groups or simply with friends to operate from remote lo-

cations. The American Radio Relay League (ARRL), the national association for Amateur Radio, sponsors this event. Amateur radio operators, commonly known as “hams”, set up temporary transmitting stations in public places to demonstrate ham radio’s science, skill and service to our communities and our nation. Radio operators will attempt to make contact with other stations across the country and around the world; testing the readiness of Amateur Radio Emergency Communications. St. Charles County First Responders are busy honing their bartending skills in preparation for the return of the Big Kahuna Bartender Challenge.

The popular event will once again give Community Living’s Board of Directors the chance to defend their title by battling it out behind the bar to raise funds for individuals with disabilities in St. Charles County.

The team that earns the most money in tips during the event will earn the coveted “Big Kahuna” title and bragging rights for the year. Rascals cool off as temperature rises The River City Rascals professional baseball team play in the West Division of the Frontier League with their home games at CarShield Field in O’Fallon.

The team was on a torrid pace, but has only won four of the last 10 games. Saying that, at this writing they have fallen into second place, a game-and-a-half out of first place.

The pitching for the Rascals has been stellar with only the bats becoming silent. Hector Hernandez, the 6’1” 200 pound lefty from Rio Piedra, Puerto Rico, has been consistent by piling up four wins in five games this young season, tying him for first place in the league.

Right-handed pitcher Josh Kimborowicz, at 6’3” 210 pounds, has thrown 35 innings and has struck out 35 opposing batters; good enough for fifth place in the league.

The Rascals’ total pitching staff leads the Frontier League, allowing just over three runs a game.

Servings: 6-8 Sweet Chipotle Marinade: 8 garlic cloves, peeled 1 red bell pepper, de-seeded and stemmed 1 small white onion 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon smoked paprika 8 tablespoons olive oil 8 tablespoons agave syrup 4 tablespoons fresh lime juice 1 1/4cups orange juice 1 1/4 cups cold water 4 tablespoons Tabasco Chipotle Pepper Sauce salt, to taste 2 pounds extra-large shrimp, peeled, deveined and tails on 4-6 boneless, skinless chicken breasts Garlic Chipotle Marinade: 14 garlic cloves, peeled 1 medium white onion, quartered 1 1/2 cups light Mexican beer 3/4 cup olive oil 1 tablespoon coarse black pepper 4 tablespoons Tabasco Chipotle Pepper Sauce 1 teaspoon salt 2 flank steaks (1 pound each)

Directions: To make Garlic Chipotle Marinade: In blender, puree garlic, onion, beer, olive oil and pepper.

Transfer puree to large mixing bowl; add chipotle sauce and salt.

Place steaks in re-sealable plastic bag and pour in marinade.

Note: Marinating time depends on the cut of beef selected. For fajitas or skirt steak, marinate at least 6 hours.

To make Sweet Chipotle Marinade: In blender, puree garlic, bell pepper, onion, cinnamon, paprika, olive oil, agave, lime juice, orange juice, water and chipotle pepper sauce.

In separate re-sealable plastic bags, divide

marinade over chicken and shrimp. Allow shrimp to marinate 8 hours and chicken 24 hours.

To prepare meat: Remove steak, shrimp and chicken from marinade and set aside. Heat grill to medium-high heat. Brush off excess marinade and grill chicken first, to desired doneness, then steak and shrimp.

Note: Cooking times will vary depending on cuts of meat and desired doneness. For best results, use a meat thermometer.

Serving suggestion: Place steak, shrimp and chicken on large platter and serve with side items such as fresh guacamole, pico de gallo, grilled onions, fresh limes and fresh corn tortillas.

The Parr Family returns in ‘Incredibles 2’

For over 20 years, Pixar Animation Studios has enjoyed incredible box office success.

Their 1995 hit “Toy Story” was a game-changer, which they followed up with family-friendly films about bugs, monsters and anthropomorphic cars. “Coco,” a 2017 holiday release, hit all the right cylinders in a story about honoring the dead. It’s rare that the studio has a film that misfires but happens occasionally.

Pixar makes great sequels as well, with the fourth installment of “Toy Story” due in theaters in 2019. After a 14-year hiatus, Pixar’s animated superhero family is coming out of retirement. “Incredibles 2,” the follow-up to the 2004 hit, arrives in theaters this month. With director Brad Bird and most of the original voice cast returning for the sequel, this one should be too good to miss.

The original film follows Bob Parr (voice of Craig T. Nelson) and his superpowered family at a time when superheroes are out of favor. Instead of catching crooks, Bob works as a claims adjuster for an insurance agency, fighting daily battles with numbers. Offered a chance to get back into action, Bob leaps at the opportunity, but soon finds himself in a very deadly predicament.

Leveraging the family dynamic in “The Fantastic Four” and “The Avengers” comic books, “The Incredibles” focuses on Bob, wife Helen (Holly Hunter) and their children, Violet (Sarah Vowell), Dash (Spencer Fox) and little Jack Jack (Eli Fucile) as they deal with their situation. When Bob gets into trouble, though, his family comes to the rescue, creating a team that could make superheroes popular again.

Helen’s new job comes with some nifty perks, but her work takes her away from the family.

The original film has a solid fan base and the sequel already has received some glowing reviews. There’s been talk, however, of moviegoer’s suffering “superhero fatigue,” especially with “Avengers: Infinity War” and its ensemble cast. Still, the Parr family is in a class by itself and the sequel is sure to be a crowd pleaser.

“Incredibles 2,” rated PG, opens in theaters on Friday, June 15.

emember back in the day when it was harmful to feed ducks bread because they would develop severe mind-altering yeast infections?

The reports on the evening news were grim to say the least.

We’d see gangs or should I say, gaggles, of geese armed with sharp branches looting convenience stores, grabbing hot dog buns, Ding Dongs and Twinkies or whatever else their yeast-addicted bills could nab onto. Then they’d continue the mayhem by buzzing over bakeries, feathers flying and snatching loaves and breadsticks leaving the place in a crumby shambles.

Remember?

Ya, neither do I. But today for some odd, newly discovered reason, bread is wreaking havoc on the bird population.

We typically take the grandkids down to the local duck pond, where for years the same group of dependent ducks have been gathering to enjoy a free meal courtesy of the community kids.

I know they’re the same ones because George WashingDuck has been a member of this group forever. We call him that because he has a funny silky white pompadour atop his head much like the first president’s. Like most ducks, he has no teeth, which would qualify him for a set of wooden ones, thus completing the total George transformation.

But on one of these outings we were faced with a sign telling us not to feed the waterfowl because by doing so we were hastening the Duck Apocalypse.

Now we’re not prepared like most people.

When on a whim we decide to feed the feathered floaties, we reach for a plastic bag of day old death. Do others responsibly reach for their handy bag of Purina special-diet wild duck and goose pellets, fortified with the daily required nutritional additives to supplement pond slime, moss and gnat intake--as required by the Park Rangers Association (a.k.a. the fun-sucking bureaucrats in Washington)?

I think they do not!

Come on. It’s not like we’re feeding the world’s ducks and endangering critical migratory flight patterns. We’re feeding a few of the locals who have been around since George’s wooden teeth.

Question: If bread is so detrimental to fowl, then why is it encouraged to stuff gobs of it into the cavities of turkeys at Thanksgiving?

Washington: Common sense not included.

Cindy Moore is the mother of three superlative kids, servant of two self-indulgent felines and wife to one nifty husband. Her ficticious occupation?
