St. Charles County Mosquito Control looks to limit the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses with the help of the general public By Brett Auten It is the time of year when our pesky co-habitats are wanting to join in the fun. In order to maximize your outdoor experience, the St. Charles County Mosquito Control branch works with residents to block the bite of mosquitoes. The goal is not only to have a consistently more blissful backyard experiences, but to also help reduce the risk of diseases being carried by mosquitoes. The division’s Mosquito Control staff will spend all summer monitoring problem areas, testing and applying treatments all while educating the

public on how to protect themselves and others. “When residents take steps to protect themselves from insect bites and eliminate breeding grounds from their homes, our program is more focused and effective,” Caroline McEwen, Mosquito Control Program Manager, said. “With the help of our residents, we can decrease the likelihood of these disease-carrying pests in our community.” The Mosquito Control program staff incorporates a full-court press against the pests’ offense. Along with treating known breeding areas with larvicide to squelch the develop-

ment of adult insects, they target spraying in areas where nuisance populations have developed and set traps around the county to test for the presence of different species and diseases they might carry. “Various species behave differently and are active at different times of the day, so knowing the types of mosquitoes in a community enables staff to apply a more effective treatment,” Doug Bolnick, Public Information Officer for the St. Charles County Department of Public Health, said. “The biggest thing is, those who live in the treatment See ‘BITE’ page 2
