By Brett Auten Following a soft open last month, the Youth Activity Park in Dardenne Prairie now boasts the largest pump track in the United States.

The largest ‘what?’ you may be asking.

The 30,000-square foot track is a looping trail system of dirt berms and rollers for cycling without the rider pedaling. You gain momentum going over the berms, rollers and through the turns and by using up and down body movements instead of pedaling or pushing.

Ryan Graham, Director St. Charles County Parks, said the pump track was presented as an idea for the park a number of years ago by members of our local biking community, who would go out of town and out of state to ride trails and pump tracks. The question became how to keep the local biking community here and how to bring in riders from other states. The answer is the asphalt pump track, which is low maintenance compared to dirt tracks.

“You can ride it in almost any weather condition,” Graham said. “You don’t have to shut it down after a rain. You can ride pretty much anything with wheels on it from scooters, BMX, mountain bikes, strider bikes, skateboards or even inline skates.

Everyone can enjoy it.”

Fortunately, around 2018, the parks department had a plan to install an in-house designed dirt pump track.

“When the winter hit and we couldn’t move on the project, this turned out to be a blessing in disguise as it allowed us to look again and see if what we were doing, was truly what we wanted,” Graham said.

When a six-year-old girl visited the Sports Closet, the Kiwanis Club of Wright City’s newest project, some pink softball shoes caught her eye. So did a matching helmet.

Her brother, meanwhile, didn’t leave empty-handed. He left dribbling a soccer ball and basketball.

This family is just one of many the Kiwanis Club hopes benefits from the Sports Closet, opened to provide free athletic equipment to low-income families in the Wright City area.

“We’re not asking for anything in return,” Kiwanis Club member Rich Lagemann said.

The Sports Closet, described as “a food pantry for sports equipment,” is a mini sporting goods store located at 100 W. N. Second St. The organization was awarded a $4,000 Operation Round Up grant to be used to purchase new equipment and fill gaps in sizes and equipment that has already been donated.

Grant funds are donated by Cuivre River Electric members who participate in Operation Round Up by rounding up their electric bill payments each month to the next highest dollar. The funds, administered by a seven-member volunteer board, are available to help individuals, families and organizations.

Portion of Guthrie Road to close for culvert replacement The St. Charles County Highway Department will close a portion of Guthrie Road through Aug. 14, weather permitting, to allow for removal and replacement of a deteriorated culvert. The closure will occur just north of 1147 Guthrie Road.

Traffic will be required to use an alternate route around the closure. Local traffic can access either side of the closure location, but no through traffic will be permitted. Signs notifying motorists of the closure and necessary detours will be posted. The detour route will include portions of Hancock, Kersting and Josephville roads.

This road project is part of a continuing effort by St. Charles County Government to improve the County’s road system for the safety of the travelling public. Portion of Gutermuth Road to close for Route 364 interchange construction The St. Charles County Highway Department will close a portion of Gutermuth Road through Aug. 21 to allow for continued construction of the new Gutermuth Road interchange with Route 364. The closure will occur between Norgate Court and Old Gutermuth Road.

“The closure of the road is necessary to allow the contractor to safely connect the new interchange ramps to Gutermuth Road,” explains County Engineer Craig Tajkowski. “We understand that this closure will be an inconvenience, but the new interchange will be a tremendous timesaver for residents and motorists in this area of the county.”

Residents will have access to Gutermuth Road on either side of the closure, but no through traffic will be permitted. Eastbound motorists can detour around the restricted area by taking O’Fallon Road to Westwood Drive to Motherhead Road. The Highway Department will use changeable message boards to notify residents in advance of the

closure and post signs notifying motorists of the detour.

The construction of the new interchange started Feb. 17, and is managed by the St. Charles County Highway Department with oversight by the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT). The project is a cooperative effort funded by St. Charles County, MoDOT, and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to improve traffic flow along Route 364. Construction includes: • Grading and paving along Gutermuth Road and Route 364 for new interchange ramps.

• Acceleration and deceleration lanes.

• Roundabouts.

• Retaining walls, sound wall, lighting and signage.

St. Charles County joins state treasurer’s local government checkbook Missouri State Treasurer Scott Fitzpatrick announced July 8 that spending data for St. Charles County is now included in the local government checkbook. This is part of his ongoing commitment to ensuring a more efficient and transparent government at all levels.

Charles County and the city of St. Louis, can be searched, with 18 additional counties in progress. The office will expand the number of counties as the data becomes available.

Visitors to the checkbook can examine expenditure data detailing funds, departments, vendors, payment descriptions and totals for the available government entities.

“I want Missourians to be able to trust that their government is working for them and that their tax dollars are being spent wisely – and increased transparency helps facilitate that trust,” Treasurer Fitzpatrick said. “As our state and local governments mitigate the impact of COVID-19 with CARES Act Funds, the data provided in the checkbook will be even more relevant to Missouri citizens. Americare reports all residents COVID-19 negative at its facilities in St. Peters

By Dr. Jesse Susi Joint problems usually begin in mid- to late life. If you’re someone who plays sports, you might notice you can’t get out on the court or the field anymore.

Maybe you’re unable to keep up with your family and friends when you travel, or you’re just slowing down in general. This could be from pain, tiredness or weakness in your joint or leg.

While there are many ways to treat joint problems, sometimes a joint replacement is the best option.

Determining if it’s right for you Joint replacement usually comes into play after other alternatives — such as injections, medications and braces — have been unable to provide you with any relief. However, it isn’t for everyone, and your orthopedist will ensure you’re a good candidate for joint replacement before any plans are underway. For example, if you’re overweight, or have a body mass index (BMI) over 40, your doctor will likely recommend weight loss to help your artificial joint last as long as possible. Underlying health issues can also be a factor, particularly for people with diabetes or who are on immunosuppressant medications for fibromyalgia, lupus or psoriatic diseases, as they have a greater risk of infection after a joint replacement. Anemia, smoking and chronic kidney disease are other factors that have to be addressed before proceeding.

Preparing for surgery and recovery There are several things you can do before surgery to make the recovery process easier.

The most important is preparing the body physically. Begin to exercise and get your body into shape to undergo this major procedure. This might include physical therapy, which will also give you an idea of the exercises you can expect after surgery. When planning, identify a caregiver who will be able to support you by driving you to physical therapy or helping you prepare meals. Additionally, be sure to arrange your

home for recovery, removing any throw rugs and getting slip-on shoes with rubber soles to decrease your risk of falling.

Getting back to your life Recovery looks different for hips and knees.

Six weeks after hip replacement surgery, most patients are relatively pain free and have returned to their normal activities. Knee replacement is a little more challenging with a longer recovery. However, by six months, patients are able to enjoy the activities they weren’t able to before surgery. Within a year, the replaced knee has become the better, or dominant, knee, leading many patients to consider a replacement for the other, as they’re enjoying their new found, pain-free life.

Americare, a senior living provider in St. Peters has reported all residents and employees of its Chestnut Glen and Terraces community and its Spencer Place community have tested negative for COVID-19 following a whole-house testing that was undertaken last week.

Over the weekend, Americare also learned that the one resident from Spencer Place who had tested positive last week was actually a false positive. While rare, false positives to happen and the result was confirmed by the pandemic coordinator. That resident has been returned to their room.

The in-room quarantine instituted last week has been removed, although residents continue to get daily wellness checks.

Based on the positive test (now known to be false), Americare had last week converted one of the memory care assisted living buildings on the Chestnut Glen campus into a COVID special care unit. Although there are no cases in the unit, Americare is keeping the unit open for the time being.

Spencer Place and Chestnut Glen have informed the local and state health departments of all results and actions. All residents, employees and resident family members have been informed and will be kept up to date.

Inspiration Corner: Three easy steps to a more peaceful community My dog has an itch. Rather than approach me dutifully, to politely request assistance, she has taken to rubbing her sides along the coarse hallway wall. She innocently rubs, like a heifer on a barbed-wire fence, and then looks back at me for remonstrance. It matters not how many times I tell her to “stop fouling up the wall with her grody body.” She gazes up at me with the eyes of a newborn fawn and does it again. She has conditioned me to this routine not unlike the way I prime my lawn mower; poke the red squishy button three times, pull the cord, and anticipate the explosion.

It seems the social scene in our provocative era is playing out in much the same way; a person declares a thought and anyone within earshot (or on the internet) feels compelled to rebut it. Only instead of accomplishing something beautiful, like a freshly mown lawn, we are shredding each other with the sickle-sharp blades of our tongues.

We are daily writing the moribund charter for future America. Instead of e pluribus unum (out of many, one) our updated coins will read: e pluribus nihil (out of many, none). And lest you think my forecast a little bleak, consider how many of our rote narratives consist of emojis. We even have hats that resemble little brown piles of expletive.

Have we forgotten the social grace of listening?

Or have we been shouting “listen to me” for so long that we simply don’t know how? We speak over one another with the enthusiasm of a Canadian Goose whose gosling has been kicked. We are all “beaks and teeth” while debating issues that could

be calmly discussed. And while polite discourse withers beneath the hot glare of fiery temper disguised as fact, we have all become professional verbal boxers with an itch we just can’t reach. Sure, we could ask for assistance to understand alternative points of view, but we would rather rub our sides on our neighbor’s wall.

Dear Reader, I would like to propose a solution. In much the same way we approach our belly fat, we could slim down our swollen emotions by taking a break from the narratives that provoke us. Instead of social media, we could visit a library and read history. Instead of arguing with our “deranged co-worker” we could disengage, nod politely and walk away. Instead of consuming vast quantities of our favorite news programs, we could sit in our front yards and watch for moles (don’t knock it until you’ve tried it!).

New guidelines announced for Alligator’s Creek Aquatic Center and the Renaud Center With COVID-19 cases beginning to rise again across St. Charles County, O’Fallon’s Parks and Recreation team announced new guidelines for Alligator’s Creek Aquatic Center and usage of the Renaud Center gym.

Alligator’s Creek Aquatic Center Alligator’s Creek Aquatic Center will resume requiring guests to pre-register for daily admission online at www.ofallon.mo.us/acac for three hour and 15 minute swim sessions online, prior to arrival. New season passes will not be available. Each session will be restricted to a limited number of guests.

Session times available for reservations will be as follows: • 11 a.m. – 2:15 p.m.

• 2:45 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Renaud Center Gym For the foreseeable future, the Renaud Center gym will not be available for open play. Scheduled activities, including pickleball, various classes, camps and volleyball will be allowed, but open play will not be allowed.

Assisted Living at the Meadowlands resumes social engagement programs in a safe manner during the COVID-19 outbreak As the state of Missouri is relaxing its restrictions, Assisted Living at The Meadowlands (The Meadowlands), located at 135 Meadowland Estates Lane in O’Fallon, is resuming its social engagement programs in a safe manner during the COVID-19 outbreak. The staff at The Meadowlands provides care to their residents by not only implementing strict infection control measures, but also offering social engagement programs and activities. At the start of the COVID-19 outbreak, The Meadowlands devised plans to make sure that their residents, staff members, and resident families were both safe and active.

In order to keep its residents and staff members safe, The Meadowlands implements stringent infection control procedures to screen all staff and residents daily for symptoms of COVID-19 infections, as guided by the CDC, local, and state health departments. Indoor soccer team sign goalkeeper for five more years The Ambush play professional indoor soccer in the Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) with home games at the Family Arena.

The St. Louis Ambush have extended goalkeeper Paulo Nascimento for five more years, keeping him in an Ambush uniform through the 2024-25 season, the team announced.

Paulo, who plays under his first name only, joined the Ambush in 2017 and has become known for his acrobatic saves and durability in goal. He earned All-MASL Honorable Mention each of the last two seasons.

Paulo is a native of Natal, a city in the state of Rio Grande do Norte in northeastern Brazil.

Prior to joining the Ambush, he enjoyed a stellar career of over ten years in Bralilian futsal. Paulo has appeared in 60 games in three seasons with the Ambush, compiling a 21-39 win-loss record with a 6.77 goals against average and a .661 save percentage.

Ambush Head Coach Hewerton said, “When we brought Paulo here from Brazil, we knew of his athleticism and skill. He adapted quickly to the American arena soccer game and we’re thrilled to have him for the next five years.”

Ambush General Manager Jeff Locker said, “Paulo has not disappointed in goal. Ferdinand, a veteran of 11 professional indoor soccer seasons, consistently ranks among the best players in the Major Arena Soccer League (MASL).

The deal puts Ferdinand in an Ambush uniform for the next two seasons with a mutual option for a third year. Ferdinand has posted 181 goals and 211 assists in 226 career games. He made his mark early in his career, winning the MISL Rookie of the Year honor in 2010. Ferdinand played six seasons with the Baltimore Blast (MISL and MASL) from 2009 to 2015, before moving to the Milwaukee Wave (MASL), where he spent the last five seasons.

A consistent offensive threat, Ferdinand has tallied 15 or more goals in eight of his 11 seasons. While he is a dependable scorer, Ferdinand is also a prolific playmaker, with more than 25 assists in each of his last four seasons. He finished in the top three in the league in that category each of the last four seasons as well, leading the league twice. Max is also a mainstay on the stat charts for points scored, finishing in the top ten each of the last four seasons in both total points and points per game average. Ferdinand also brings postseason experience to the Ambush, having won league championships with both Baltimore and Milwaukee.

The St. Louis Ambush co-owner and CEO Shelly Clark said, “Max choosing to become a part of the Ambush is a testament to our organization’s desire and dedication to put together a competitive team.

Cheesecake Cupcakes with Oat and Walnut Crust Recipe courtesy of Liz Weiss on behalf of the FMI Foundation Crust: 1/2 cup oldfashioned or quick oats 1/2 cup walnut halves or pieces 1 tablespoon extravirgin olive oil 1 tablespoon butter, melted 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 pinch salt

Filling: 1 package (8 ounces) light cream cheese, at room temperature 1/4 cup granulated sugar 1 large egg 1/2 tablespoon cornstarch 1/2 lemon, zest only 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Toppings (optional): plain or vanilla Greek yogurt sliced strawberries sliced raspberries sliced blueberries fresh mint toasted coconut flakes agave sliced almonds lemon zest

Directions: Preheat oven to 350 F. Line cupcake pan with eight paper baking cups and set aside.

To make crust: In bowl of food processor, pulse oats and walnuts until coarsely ground. Add olive oil, butter, sugar, cinnamon and salt; pulse until evenly moistened and combined.

Press 1 tablespoon of mixture firmly onto bottoms of cups. Bake 7 minutes until cooked.

To make filling: In medium bowl, beat cream cheese and sugar until

smooth and creamy. Add egg, cornstarch, lemon zest and vanilla; continue beating until well combined.

Spoon mixture evenly into muffin cups. Bake 20-22 minutes until cream cheese mixture is set. Remove from oven and cool in tins about 10 minutes. Transfer to wire rack and cool completely. Place in refrigerator and chill completely before serving or decorating with yogurt, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, mint, coconut flakes, agave, almonds and lemon zest, if desired.

hh the good old days. That would be this last February.

It was such a time of innocence and unknowing.

Around then a strange new word started to appear: COVID19. We old folks shrugged it off as probably one of those new rap groups. It didn’t pertain to us.

Along with it came another word: coronavirus. The millennials thought it was some type of fancy alcoholic beverage. Then pandemic appeared on the news. The youngsters thought this was an invasion of panda bears and looked forward to it. A free panda bear for everyone, they cheered!

I actually had to look that one up in the dictionary. After all, there hadn’t been one since the Dark Ages. I was still in diapers then…actually, swaddled in tree bark since diapers hadn’t been invented yet. Pandemic was defined as: an epidemic, only on steroids. Buy toilet paper…NOW! Who would have known by mid-year our quaint ways of living would be so different.

Greetings have certainly changed. The old-fashioned way of saying hello has transformed beyond recognition. Once a cheery handshake was common, now it has been replaced with a series of strange gestures.

My husband ran into an old friend (an old friend who just might be covered in a film of deadly face-eating bacteria). He offered to shake his hand. My husband shook his head and extended a fist bump to which the friend bent his arm to offer an elbow knock. My husband jabbed out his elbow in response, but too late, the friend raised his hand for a high five instead.

Skin to skin contact?! They both knew that was unacceptable. So they did what any red-blooded, he-man would do in this situation, they turned around and bumped their heinies against each other.

Daze of yore

Of course, it embarrassed them to the point that they walked away with their heads bent and promised to never speak of this encounter again.

Conversation has changed considerably. It’s impossible to understand anyone wearing a mask.

At the store, my husband and I divided up the shopping list then met up later.

“Did you pick up the cat food?” he asked. Only it came out, dead pig oud fud?

“Did you just call me a dead pig?”

He said, “Pick, pick.” But I distinctly heard pig, pig.

“How rude! Just because I don’t wear makeup under this mask is no reason to call names.”

We no longer speak to each other while wearing masks. We text.
