By Brett Auten The St. Peters Rec-Plex will be the focal point of the roller hockey world.

State Wars 14, the U.S. Roller Hockey Championships, will be held there for the third time in seven years. More than 3,000 roller hockey players and 12,000 other attendees will come to St. Peters for the annual tournament from July 25 to Aug. 6. The Rec-Plex also hosted State Wars 8 in 2012 and State Wars 11 in 2015.

“We are extremely excited to be returning to St. Peters,” State Wars Hockey President Tim McManus said. “Having a topnotch facility with a beautiful surrounding area with plenty for our families to do away from the rink, makes it a no-brainer for us.

We plan to bring our teams, families and fans another incredible State Wars Hockey experience.”

Roller hockey (also known as inline hockey) teams are composed of up to four lines of players including two forwards and two defensemen on each line. There are five players including the goalie from each side on the rink at a time.

Inline hockey is a very fast paced and free-flowing game because it does not have the same rules as ice hockey. There are no blue lines or defensive zones in roller hockey, unlike ice hockey. It means that, according to most rule codes, there are no offsides or icings that can occur during gameplay; this along with fewer players on the rink allows for faster play. There are traditionally two 20-minute periods or four 10-minute periods with a stopped clock.

“It is a lot like overtime in the NHL,” McManus said. “There are a lot of chances, a lot of speed and skill, and a lot of time on the puck.”

turned into inline skating rinks for State Wars 14 as teams from all over North America and the world, including teams from the United Kingdom, South Korea, Sweden, France, Brazil, Argentina, and Colombia, will be in town.

“We are proud to bring new families to the area who have never been to St. Peters before,” McManus said. “This year we have 346 teams in the tournament from six-andunder to adult. The event grows each year.”

With the mix of state and international teams, players and fans alike will be amped up even more.

“This will be an exciting boost to the region,” Lisa Bedian, Communications Director for the city of St. Peters, said. “You can imagine the boost 12,000 visitors can bring to restaurants, stores and hotels. It’s an event we’ve enjoyed hosting.”

One of the highlights of the tournament will be the Pama Pro Invitational that runs on July 27-29. The 12 best professional teams will mix it up with the winner-take-all prize of $25,000.

The Rec-Plex is used to putting on significant events. The Missouri State High School Athletic Association has long hosted both boys and girls state swimming and diving championships there as well as its state water polo tournament. But few, if any, match the impact State Wars has.

“We always have a lot going on here, but the State Wars is probably the biggest event that we host,” Bedian said. “If you have a

chance to come to watch, it is really exciting to see these teams who have played their way into this highly competitive tournament.”

It will be easy to check out all of the action as State Wars 14 is open to the public is free. Events will take place at all three rinks: Rec-Plex North Rink (600 seats), Rec-Plex South Rink A arena (1,200 seats) and Rec-Plex South Rink B (300 portable seats).

To accommodate State Wars 14, public ice skating sessions will be unavailable through Aug. 27. The ice will be melted, and rinks converted for inline hockey surfaces brought in special for State Wars. After the event, the ice rinks will undergo maintenance for a few weeks.

Community Voices Summer is a time of training and preparation for the upcoming school year

By Dr. Mary Hendricks-Harris Francis Howell is busy with summer school and getting ready for the start of the new school year. This summer, more than 3,500 students are extending their learning through a wide variety of state-funded programs. In addition to traditional summer school, FHSD holds summer reading programs, elementary and middle school STEM camps, an “App” camp, and new this year, a middle school biomedical camp.

The first day of school is Aug. 9. Our teachers, administrators and support staff are preparing and participating in a variety of learning opportunities. This month, more than 250 elementary teachers will receive training to improve literacy/writing outcomes. Administrators have been working to incorporate the district’s new

strategic plan into individual School Improvement Plans, and staff will soon be taking part in 4E (Educate, Evade, Escape, and Engage) training. This safety training, in conjunction with the St. Charles County Police Department, will advance our staff ’s knowledge about how to respond to a potential active shooter situation.

In August, we will be asking community members to be a part of our new strategic advisory committees. These committees will work on the focus areas identified in our new strategic plan: 1. Life, College, and Career Success 2. Engaging Learning Environment 3. Staff, Leaders, and Organizational Performance 4. Engaged Family and Community Partnerships 5. Resource Effectiveness and Efficiencies

St. Charles Optimist Club marks ‘Respect for Law Day’ The St. Charles Optimist Club invited officers selected by their supervisor to be recognized for contributions to our community at the club’s noon meeting on June 26.

Optimist International established this recognition program in 1965 and the local Optimist Club began the annual recognition tradition in 1971. Optimists are proud of the work local enforcement teams do to protect the St. Charles community. Event chairman, Jack Ross, expressed the club’s gratitude for the dedicated work and efforts to keep the peace in this era of unrest and danger experienced by law enforcement officers.

Boy Scouts earn Entrepreneurship Merit Badge Nearly 50 Boy Scouts earned the Entrepreneurship Merit Badge on the campus of Lindenwood University recently at a one-day event sponsored by the Duree Center for Entrepreneurship. The center, which is part of the Hammond Institute for Free Enterprise, collaborated with the Greater St. Louis Area Boy Scout Council and the Foundation for Economic Education (FEE) to hold this training session on campus. St. Louis region Money Smart essay contest awards local students $3,500 The Greater St. Louis Financial Education Collaborative, in partnership with United Way of Greater St. Louis, recently awarded scholarships to three St. Louis-area students through the Money Smart Kid Essay Contest. Students in sixth through eighth grade from schools around the region were asked to demonstrate their knowledge of money management and develop and apply their own money management ideas through their essay.

Janet Musangali, a seventh grader at Frontier Middle School in O’Fallon, was the contest’s grand prize winner and received a $2,000 scholarship. Second place winner Maddox Kao, a seventh grader at Chesterfield Montessori School, won $1,000 and Owen Farra, a seventh grader at The Hamilton School, received $500 for third place.

Water main replacements begin in O’Fallon’s Forest Park Subdivision Construction began July 2 on a long-range project to replace aged water mains throughout Forest Park Subdivision in O’Fallon with new, modern water mains.

The project was prompted by an engineering study conducted for the city in 2016 to evaluate O’Fallon’s water distribution system and develop a plan, the Distribution System Capital Improvement Plan. Guided by main break history and risk assessment, the study identified Forest Park Subdivision as the city’s top priority for replacing the water mains. The new water main will generally be installed in the city’s right-of-way next to the street.

For the project, the city divided the work into five one-year increments with the goal of replacing the aged water main infrastructure at a rate of one mile of water main per project year.

As the work progresses, residents and property owners will be notified when crews will need to restrict access to driveways, sidewalks and roadways so that water main pipes can be installed.

Residents and property-owners also will be notified of any brief service interruptions to allow service line transfers to take place.

Currently, and tentatively in years three, four and five, the Forest Park Water Main Replacement Project calls for the following streets to have new water mains installed: July 2018: Water main replacement will occur on St. Margaret Lane south of St. Joseph Avenue, St. Mathew Avenue south of St. Jo-

seph Avenue, St. Joseph Avenue between St. Margaret and St. Mathew, Eggering Drive and Ronnie Drive south of Eggering.

2019: Water main replacement will occur on Prince David Drive, St. Christopher Drive, Prince Rupert Drive, St. John Drive, St. Patrick Drive, Roland Avenue and Ronnie Drive between Eggering Drive and St. Patrick.

Year Three: Water main replacement is tentatively planned for St. Joseph between N. Main Street and St. Margaret Lane, St. Mary’s Place, St. Paul Court, St. Paul Lane, Assumption Avenue, St. Margaret Lane between St. Joseph and Prince Charles Drive, Prince Charles Drive, and Love Drive between Prince Charles Drive and Allen Drive.

Year Four: Water main replacement is tentatively planned for St. Mathew Avenue between St. Joseph and Tom Ginnever avenues, Briscoe Avenue, St. Paul Lane and Allen Drive.

Year Five: Water main replacement is tentatively planned for Taylor Place, Jacobs Lane, Love Drive between Allen Drive and Briscoe Avenue, St Bernard Drive, Trudy Lane and Mona Drive.

Preventing and treating cataracts

By Dr. Jonathan Crews Cataracts affect millions of Americans a year. By the age of 65, over 90 percent of people have cataracts. This clouding of the eye’s lens can make vision dull and blurry, making it difficult to see. Learn how to tell the signs of cataracts and what you can do if you develop them.

Who is affected by cataracts?

Many people can be affected by cataracts. As you age, the risk of cataracts increases. Some people develop cataracts as early as their 40s and 50s. However, diabetics and people with eye trauma are more susceptible to developing them at earlier ages. The cause of cataracts isn’t clear, but some other possible factors include too much sun exposure, smoking and use of some medications or steroids.

What are the symptoms of cataracts?

A common symptom of cataracts is nighttime glare. Other symptoms include cloudy or blurry vision and multiple vision. If you notice these changes in your eyesight, it’s recommended to see an ophthalmologist.

Is there anything I can do to prevent cataracts?

Wearing polarized sunglasses to protect from UV light can help slow down the formation of cataracts. Eating healthy and living a healthy lifestyle are also important preventive measures you can take. Currently, there are no medications that can delay or stop cataracts from ever forming, nor is there anything specific that can totally reverse them, but ongoing research hopes to better identify the cause of cataracts.

How are cataracts treated?

Outpatient cataract surgery is the most common treatment option. Advancements of this procedure have allowed cataracts to be treated much sooner than ever before. Typically, the procedure uses a light sedative, with an anesthesiologist monitoring the patient. The procedure itself is quick, lasting only 10 to 15 minutes, and is painless. Many patients come out of the procedure shocked at how fast and easy it was.

Cataracts can have a dramatic impact on daily life. While there isn’t a definite way to prevent cataracts, there are things you can do to lower your risk. And should you develop them, treatment is safe and effective in helping you see clearly again.

The artwork of incoming Holt High School freshman Janessa Hoffmann has been chosen for publication in “Grannie Annie, Vol. 13,” a collection of stories written by students across the globe about their families.

The Grannie Annie Family Story Celebration is a nonprofit group based here in St. Louis that encourages fourth through eighth graders from around the world to discover, write and share stories from their family history and to submit them to The Grannie Annie for possible publication. Once the stories are chosen, local students are invited to submit artwork to illustrate those stories.

Janessa made Grannie Annie history by becoming the first artist to have three illustrations published in one volume. Janessa’s illustrations for the following stories were selected for publication: “Sammy’s Rough Road Trip,” by Isabel Draper of Missouri; “SOS — Saving Our Sand Dune,” by Carolista Walsh of North Carolina; and “Candy Thieves,” by Ella Munz of Missouri.

“Janessa strongly connected with each story she illustrated, and each of her illustrations effectively depicted a key element of the story,” said Fran Hamilton, Associate Director of The Grannie Annie Family Story Celebration. Janessa’s illustration for “SOS — Saving Our Sand Dune” was selected

as the cover art for “Grannie Annie, Vol. 13.”

Janessa was honored at The Grannie Annie’s Family Stories Festival at the Missouri History Museum along with the other illustrators and authors on June 3. The event was presented in conjunction with publication of “Grannie Annie, Vol. 13,” recently released in paperback, eBook, and PDF editions. Other honored students came from New York, North Carolina, Nebraska, Ohio, and six other schools in Missouri.

“The Family Stories Festival is one of the many priceless experiences made possible by The Grannie Annie each year,” said Connie McIntyre, Executive Director of The Grannie Annie.

“Talented young people from near and far sharing their family stories and illustrations on the stage of the Missouri History Museum for an audience of supportive family members and friends is profoundly heartwarming.” Following the program, the students signed books for Festival attendees.

Over the past thirteen years, The Grannie Annie has published 455 stories, which have taken place in 64 countries on 6 continents over a span of nearly 400 years. The stories vividly depict unique events, while reminding readers of the fundamental experiences common to all.

cious treasure for generations, and the process of illustrating a family story provides an opportunity for the artist to connect with that story in a special way,” said Hamilton.

For these reasons, the festival celebrated all 602 works that were submitted for possible publication in “Volume 13.”

Stories to be considered for publication in “Grannie Annie, Vol. 14,” must be submitted by Feb. 1, 2019. There is no fee for students to participate. Art teachers interested in having their fourth- through eighthgrade students submit illustrations of stories to be published in “Grannie Annie, Vol. 14,” should contact familystories@ thegrannieannie.org.

SCC receives $10,000 from the UPS Foundation The St. Charles Community College Foundation received a $10,000 grant from the UPS Foundation, which drives global corporate citizenship and philanthropic programs for UPS. A local working group charged with identifying local priority resource concerns and providing input about program criteria to the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will meet at 9:45 a.m. at the USDA Service Center at 160 St. Peters Centre Blvd. in St. Peters. The working group is comprised primarily of representatives of various local, state and federal agencies with knowledge of natural resource concerns. Specifically, the group will help prioritize selection criteria for NRCS’ Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) applications in St. Charles and St. Louis counties.

The meeting is open to the public and will include time for comments from residents of the represented county.

Aug. 2: Family festival

The City of St. Charles School District is hosting a family festival that lets students and parents learn more about local youth, family and community organizations. The festival is scheduled at St. Charles High School from 5 – 7 p.m., rain or shine, and offers many activities for family members of all ages. Care to Learn, an organization that looks to solve issues of health, hunger and hygiene to improve student success, is the main sponsor for the festival. In addition to Care to Learn, more than 30 other local organizations will be in attendance to inform attendees of the services they provide. The festival will offer school supplies as attendance prizes. Refreshments of hot dogs and water will be provided as well.

The 2018 Friends of the St. Charles City-County Library Book Fair will be held August 3-5 at the Family Arena at 2002 Arena Parkway in St. Charles. Rascals playing exciting baseball The River City Rascals professional baseball team play in the West Division of the Frontier League with their home games at CarShield Field in O’Fallon.

Last weekend the team impressed their hometown fans with a series win over the Washington Wild Things. The opening game on Friday saw the visiting team squeeze by the Rascals in a 5-2 decision.

On Saturday, the home team took the contest 8-7 behind timely hitting by catcher Clint Freeman who had three hits as well as right fielder Zach Lavy who also contributed a home run.

Designated hitter Paul Kronenfeld helped out with a three-run homer, his 13th round tripper of the year. Jonny Ortiz picked up the victory throwing 4.1 innings allowing only three earned runs.

The rubber game of the series saw the team fight back in dramatic fashion by tying the game by scoring two in the bottom of the ninth compliments of a two-run homer by Clint Freeman.

The Wild Things scored one run in the top of the frame to take a 7-6 lead.

The Rascals came to bat and started with a runner starting the inning at second, as per the International Tiebreaker rule, observed by the Frontier League. Freeman singled in the tying run, and took second on a wild pitch. After Kronenfeld was intentially walked, Mike Jurgella drew a walk to load up the bases. Lavy was at the plate and made it look easy as he stroked a base hit for the walk-off win.

As the weekend ended, the O’Fallon club still had a slim 1.5 game lead over the closest team and 2.5 games lead over two other team.

Men’s basketball players honored for 3.20 GPA at Lindenwood Four members of the Lindenwood University team were named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court recently. The Lions honored for the program included Chandler Diekvoss, Zac Haese, Landon Mills and Drew Moore.

The NABC Honors Court goes to any collegiate basketball player that is a junior or senior academically, has been at a school for at least one year and had a 3.20 GPA or higher.

Lindenwood was one of just two programs in the Mid-America Inter Collegiate Athletes (MIAA) with multiple players on the list, and the four Lions accounted for nearly 60 percent of the recipients from the conference.

Diekvoss started all 29 games in which he appeared in last season for Lindenwood. He collected 414 points, 189 rebounds, 54 assists and 20 steals. He ranked 12th in the MIAA in rebounding and third in field-goal percentage, both team-leading totals.

Haese competed in 19 games for Lindenwood last season. He posted 40 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and three steals, and shot 35.1 percent from the field.

Mills played in 19 games in 2017-18 and recorded 26 points, 30 rebounds and shot 37.0 percent from the field.

Moore appeared in all 29 games during his first season as a Lion, including six starts.

Moore registered 99 points, 92 rebounds, 20 assists, eight steals and four blocks, and shot 38.5 percent from the field.

Bacon S’mores Prep time: 20 minutes | Cook time: 5 minutes | Servings: 8

Ingredients: 4 strips any variety bacon 8 marshmallows 2 chocolate bars (about 3 ounces), broken into eight pieces 8 graham crackers, broken into squares

Directions: Heat oven to 375 F. On lightly sprayed, foil-lined, rimmed baking pan, separate strips of bacon; lay flat in single layer and gently stretch each strip 1-2 inches. Bake 10-12 minutes, or until bacon begins to curl and edges just start to crisp, rotating pan halfway through cooking.

Remove bacon from pans with spatula while warm, draining briefly on absorbent paper; reserve.

Cut bacon slices in half crosswise and tightly wrap around marshmallows, securing with skewer or roasting stick. Roast marshmallows over open fire until toasty brown on edges, being careful not to burn or ignite marshmallows.

Immediately sandwich roasted marshmallows between two graham crackers with piece of chocolate.

Reawaken your imagination with ‘Christopher Robin’

More than 30 years ago, Bill Watterson created the unforgettable comic strip “Calvin and Hobbes.”

The protagonists were Calvin, a boy with a vivid imagination, and Hobbes, a stuffed tiger that he treated like a living, breathing creature. Calvin and Hobbes travelled through time, bent the laws of science and always remained the best of buddies.

The reclusive Watterson ended the strip on Dec. 31, 1995, but the characters are still adored and analyzed by fans. A few years back, one fan even posted a drawing of a college-age Calvin rediscovering his stuffed tiger. Like most of us, the artist assumed that Calvin put his toys aside as he grew into a young man.

Watterson’s creation came to mind when I heard about “Christopher Robin,” an upcoming film based on the works of A. A. Milne. The famous author created stories about Winniethe-Pooh, a honey-loving stuffed bear who lives with his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood.

Christopher Robin, a boy modeled after Milne’s son, is their human friend and protector.

“Christopher Robin,” a new film from the Walt Disney Studios, shows the inquisitive and imaginative little boy as an adult. Here, Christopher, played by Ewan McGregor, is an office worker and family man. His job sometimes keeps him from spending time with his

A big drawing card for the Winnie-thePooh franchise has been the voice actors.

The legendary Sterling Holloway, for instance, gave the stuffed bear a voice and personality in the early cartoons. Jim Cummings, another beloved voice actor, lends his vocal talents to both Pooh and Tigger in this live-action adventure.

Crossword: Children’s Stories

‘Yeggs’ is a comic series about Robert and Bill, two rabbits who have opened their own egg franchise in the Midwest (St. Louis area). We follow their day to day lives, watching as they go about the hectic task of preparing for their one big day every year. Along the way they have adventures filled with fun, comic doings and pathos.

Moore On Life Do all men take as long as my husband in the bathroom? This is a question I need answered.

What can he possibly be doing in there other than what he’s supposed to be doing in there, which I’d rather not know about?

But I kinda do want to know about the “other than” the other than he’s doing in there.

Seriously? It’s been 10 minutes!

He brings in all kinds of things that are not bathroom related, such as his IPad. He claims he needs to check on his stocks.

Some people say, “I need to see a man about a horse” which is code for, “I need to go to the bathroom.” My husband tells me he needs to, “talk to his stockbroker”, which is his code for, “I have to go to the bathroom.” But then he actually takes his phone in there with him. This makes me wonder if he really is talking stocks to his broker and what’s more, is this where the term potty mouth originated from?! Hmmm?

It also makes me wonder what would happen if his broker knew he was conversing with a man squatting on the pot?! And…what would happen to the value of the stocks if he really knew?

I think they would go down the drain. (See what I did there? I believe that’s called potty humor).

Now it’s been 15 minutes. I’m about to dial 911, but instead I punch in my husband’s phone number. It rings a few times then he sheepishly answers.

“Hello?”

“What in the name of blocked intestines are you doing in there?

Are you still alive? Do you need some kind of assistance?

I’m about to call search and rescue or send in a laxative. Which one do you need?!”

“Can’t a man have a little privacy without being interrogated?”

“You’ve had 20 minutes now. Either you tell me what’s going on in there or I break the door down.”

“Geez! I’m talking to my stockbroker.”

“Hmph. I’ve heard that one before. How are our stocks doing then? Can we retire in luxury?”

I hear a flush.

He comes out. “The market is down.”

Too much information.
