School districts across St. Charles County look to begin classes both online and in person as COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact the region By Brett Auten The structure is in place but you can’t help but think that it is on shaky ground. Amidst growing COVID-19 numbers, several St. Louis-area school districts have decided to start the school year with online-only learning with the Clayton, Parkway, Pattonville and Webster Groves districts announced last week to go online only. Also, Springfield Public Schools, the state’s largest school district, will reopen with each student attending classes for two days, and learning virtually otherwise.
As the start of the school year inches forward, St. Charles County area school districts released their plans, all of which featured options aplenty for the upcoming academic year to its anxious parents and students. All of the school districts are offering fulltime virtual instruction but it will look significantly different than the e-learning that took place to close the spring semester. This option is a comprehensive virtual learning plan whose assessments and grading practices will be consistent with those of the in-person classroom. The time expected for
a student to participate in this option will be similar to a typical, in-person, school day. This option requires students of all grade levels to be online multiple times a day. St. Charles School District families will have the option to enroll their students in either in-person or virtual learning options. This choice will apply for the entire semester and families will have the ability to reassess for the second semester. If a family elects to enroll their student in in-person See ‘SCHOOLYEAR’ page 2
