A community garden at Memorial Park is the result of a partnership between Habitat for Humanity of St. Charles County, Wentzville United Methodist Church and Boone Country Garden Club By Alexandra Ray Fresh fruits and vegetables don’t simply come from the store. They come from the ground; they must be planted and they must be grown. In an effort to provide healthy food and an opportunity for the education and the strengthening of the Wentzville Heights community, a community garden is growing. The community garden at Memorial Park in the Wentzville Heights neighborhood, located at 1419 Kathleen Dr., is the result of a partnership between Habitat for Humanity of St. Charles County, Wentzville United
Methodist Church and Boone Country Garden Club. The community garden at Memorial Park had been abandoned. Habitat for Humanity of St. Charles County saw the opportunity of taking over the garden as a way to reach out to the Wentzville Heights neighborhood, where they plan to build homes in the future. Habitat for Humanity of St. Charles County reached out to Wentzville United Methodist Church and Boone Country Garden Club, and with help and cooperation from the city of Wentzville, the community garden was officially taken over in September of last year. The community garden is made up of eight
raised beds where various plants including tomatoes and herbs grow. One of the more obvious benefits of the garden is the food that is grown within it. Reverend Mark Dumas, Pastor of Wentzville United Methodist Church, stated, “You really can’t set a price on the cost of… your own vegetables being fresh and the satisfaction of raising your own food… to sit down and say, ‘I raised that’, that’s pretty cool.” The community garden also provides a deeper impact.
