Disc golf takes flight Burgeoning sport sees rapid growth in St. Charles County with the opening of new courses

By Brett Auten Disc golf is starting to take flight in St. Charles County.

According to the Pro Disc Golf Association, disc golf is played much like traditional golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, players use a flying disc or Frisbee. The sport was formalized in the 1970’s and shares with ball golf the object of completing each hole in the fewest strokes (or fewest throws). A golf disc is thrown from a tee area to a target which is the “hole.” The hole can be one of many disc golf targets; the most common is called a Pole Hole, which is an elevated metal basket.

As a player moves down the fairway, he or she must make each consecutive throw from the spot where the previous throw has landed. The trees, shrubs and terrain changes located in and around the fairways provide challenging obstacles for the golfer.

Finally, the “putt” lands in the basket and the hole is completed.

There are ample opportunities to play locally, thanks to the St. Charles County Parks Department.

Quail Ridge Park, located at 560 Interstate Drive in Wentzville, was the first of threedisc golf courses to be built in St. Charles County’s regional parks system. The course boasts challenges for beginners and experts and features long and short tee pads situated along rolling terrain and in wooded areas of the park. The SCC Park’s disc golf courses are located at Quail Ridge Park in Wentzville, Indian Camp Creek Park near Wentzville and at College Meadows Park, located on the campus of St. Charles Community College in Cottleville. St. Charles County purchased the former New Melle Lakes Golf Course on Foristell Road near Highway Z in 2016, and the property had been held in reserve for future parkland. The parks and recreation department kicks off the opening with the Inaugural Disc Golf Tournament on Sept.

Baskets lined with glow sticks mark the course of this 18-hole event. Each player will need to bring their discs; a limited amount of LED lights will be available for purchase at the event.

The cost to enter the tournament is $10 a person and is limited to the first 72 players that register from 6:30–7:15 p.m. on the day-of-event. The tournament kicks off at 7:30 p.m. with a shotgun start.

The St. Charles County Disc Golf club started nine years ago at a time when there was only one course in the area.

Tim Wiegard is the club’s park liaison. Wiegard not only competes nationally but also helps design courses locally. He has seen the club’s membership grow from barely reaching triple digits to now eclipsing 250 members.

“Some of the friendliest people you can meet play disc golf,” Wiegard said. “Most club members are always willing to help out and progress the sport and get more people involved.

Wiegard, of O’Fallon, says that disc golf shares the same joys and frustrations of traditional golf, whether it’s sinking a long putt or hitting a tree halfway down the fairway.

There are plenty of differences, though. Disc golf rarely requires a greens fee, you probably won’t need to rent a cart, and you never get stuck with a wrong “tee time.” It is designed to be enjoyed by people of all ages, male and female, regardless of economic status.

“It’s cheaper, by far, compared to regular golf,” Wiegard said. “You’re looking at $20 a round compared to hundreds when you factor in the clubs.”

Disc golf is also starting to catch on with the youth, which could make it grow even more.

Schools are beginning to incorporate it into its physical education and Wiegard said that the local League of the Future that caters to players aged five-16 has grown two-fold in just a couple of years.

O’Fallon’s Debbie Polkinghorne and her daughter Virginia are avid disc golfers and recently gained worldwide recognition for their skills. At 10-years-old, Virginia is already a two-time world champion, and Debbie took fourth place in the Master’s division in 2017. While the entire Polkinghorne clan enjoy the sport, it is Virginia who has broken out from the pack and has even earned sponsorship.

“She plays a couple of times a week and competes in leagues and tournaments on the weekend,” Debbie Polkinghorne said. “It just all depends.”

The duality of the sport, from ultra-competitive to entirely recreational is part of its attraction and can explain its growth.

“It’s an easy, and fairly cheap, way to get in some fitness,” Polkinghorne said. “Ninety-percent of the courses in the area are built for fun. Disc golf has been a thing for a while.

We have four within the county and probably another 25 within a 25-mile radius.”

The growth of disc golf coincides with the overall increase of parks in the area. The St. Charles County Parks and Recreation Department is adding three new parks from August through fall of 2018. In addi-

tion to The Park at New Melle Lakes, the Riverside Landing boat ramp and dock opened in mid- August and Veterans Tribute Park in Weldon Spring begins this fall. This increases the total number of County parks open to the public from 12 to 15 and the total amount of acquired park land to 3,643 acres.

Black Hawk Down soldier to address Businessmen’s Prayer Breakfast of St. Charles County Major Jeffrey Struecker, Task Force Ranger//U.S. Army Retired, is well known as a major participant in the event we all know as Black Hawk Down. He will address the 24th Annual Businessmen’s Prayer Breakfast of St. Charles County, an interdenominational event.

The breakfast will be held on Wednesday, Sept.5 at 7:30 a.m., at the St. Charles Convention Center at One Convention Plaza in St. Charles.

Jeff was involved in the Battle of Mogadishu in 1993, participated in the 1989 invasion of Panama (Operation Just Cause) and in Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm. In the Battle of Mogadishu, Somalia, Jeff, 24 years old and the squad leader, led the three-vehicle convoy that returned, through intense fire, a wounded ranger to their base, as portrayed in the movie “Black Hawk Down.” Jeff is the author and co-author of numerous books; he and his wife Dawn, high school sweethearts, reside in Columbus, Georgia. with their five children.

Portion of Hepperman Road temporarily restricted to one-way traffic As part of the ongoing improvements to Hepperman Road, the St. Charles County Highway Department is temporarily restricting a portion of the road to one-way traffic, southbound only.

The one-way restricted area will be between Peruque Creek and Golf Club Drive. This restriction is necessary to allow construction of new pavement and shoulders. All other areas of Hepperman Road will remain open to two-way traffic.

Northbound traffic will be required to detour around the closure area until mid-October, at which time two-way traffic will be fully restored.

During the one-way restriction, southbound through traffic will be allowed, but no northbound traffic will be permitted through the re-

stricted area. Northbound motorists can detour around the restricted area by using Highway N to Wilmer Road to Interstate Drive.

The Highway Department will post signs notifying motorists of the northbound detour, as well as use changeable message boards to notify residents in advance of the one-way traffic change.

This road project is part of a continuing effort

Traffic changes on Route 61 in St. Charles County Drivers who use Route 61 in St. Charles County should be aware of traffic changes. The new ramp from Route P to northbound Route 61 is now open and the northbound lane shift will be removed. There will still be no direct access from Route P to southbound Route 61 or from southbound Route 61 to Route P. In addition, the crossover at Peine Road will be closed to northbound Route 61 traffic. Motorists will have to use the crossover at Granville/McHugh Drive to turn around.

Peine Road is closed at Peine Loop Road. Those that live east of Peine Loop Drive, including on Hill Drive, are still able to directly access northbound and southbound Route 61 but those that live west of Peine Loop Road have to use Peine Loop Road to access Route 61.

All work is weather permitting and may be shifted due to inclement weather. The work is part of a project to improve safety on Route 61. In addition to the overpass that will serve Route P and Peine Road, the crossovers at Grothe Road and at both Granville Drives will be closed and merging and turning lanes will also be extended.

City of Cottleville donates two police cars to SCC SCC’s department of public safety teamed up with the city of Cottleville to help the college with its police car needs going forward. The city donated two used Cottleville police cars to the college police department, after purchasing two new vehicles, thanks to a new city ordinance.

“This is just one example of how well the city of Cottleville and St. Charles Community College work together to provide excellent service for the community,” said Bob Ronkoski, SCC chief of police and director of public safety.

I was 10 minutes late to my nine-year-old son’s appointment with the endocrinologist. He is a juvenile diabetic and needed medical forms completed in order for him to start school the following week. I was late because my son was (quite literally) dragging his feet and there was a traffic jam on the highway.

I am always embarrassed when I’m late so when the receptionist asked me, “Are you the 3:40 p.m.?” I gave a snarky reply to cover my discomfiture. She was not amused. She disappeared into the back of the office and reemerged a few minutes later.

“You’ll have to reschedule,” she said.

“I’m only 10 minutes late.” I said.

“You’ll have to reschedule,” she said. And her body language indicated she took delight in watching me squirm.

I reiterated my predicament and asked if the doctor would be willing to complete the forms.

“No.” She said. “You’ll have to talk to him in person and that means you’ll have to reschedule.”

Then she looked at her calendar and said, “Oh, and it looks like he doesn’t have any appointments for another month or so.”

I would like to say that I responded with complete composure and calmly rescheduled the appointment. The truth is far less attractive. To be candid, I was bitter.

Has this ever happened to you? Did circumstances beyond your control force you into opposition with a neighbor or acquaintance who lacked empathy? Did you tell them off or just storm off angry? Did your indignation transmute into Shrek-sized proportions until you found yourself day-dreaming about making the person who hurt you suffer in proportion?

Anger is a very powerful emotion and, if left unhampered, can cause serious injury. Therefore, the way we handle anger is extremely important.

A wise man once said, “Be not quick in your spirit to become angry, for anger lodges in the heart of fools.” While we cannot control the behavior of others, we can certainly control our own.

The choice to stop grinding your axe is particularly poignant because it takes more strength to walk away from a fight than to engage in one.

Perspective, after all, often brings clarity to a situation. And while there is certainly a time and a place to recover from malicious wounds caused by uncaring individuals, there is also a time to let go of less meaningful offenses. Human beings tend to be a product of their environment and one never knows the circumstances someone was in when they unleashed the whip of animosity in your direction. When we consider our fellow humans in this light, we can appreciate that we all get a “case of the Mondays” at some point and extend to them the hand of grace. For that matter, we never know when we will need it ourselves.

Acrimony is like cancer, but there is an antidote; consider your neighbor better than yourself. One never regrets giving the gift of “the benefit of the doubt.”

O’Fallon’s annual Support Our Troops Supply Drive collects personal care items To show appreciation for U.S. troops serving overseas, donations of snacks, batteries and personal care items are being collected through Sept. 7 for the O’Fallon’s Support Our Troops Supply Drive.

The items most often request are (this list is not all-inclusive): Personal care items: baby powder/wipes, eye drops, lip balm, tissues, hand sanitizer, sunscreen, shampoo/conditioner, bath soap/ body wash, deodorant, body lotion, emery boards, Q-tips, eyeglass cleaner, women’s hygiene products, antibiotic ointment, hydrocortisone cream, disposable razors.

Snacks: protein bars, drink packets (powdered Gatorade, Crystal Light, etc.), tuna/ chicken in a pouch, Cup-a-Soup, single-serve cereal, , gum, lollipops, hard candy, peanuts/mixed nuts, trail mix, , dried fruit/ raisins, beef jerky, Slim Jims, Vienna sausages, fruit snacks.

rational bike presentation and lead a group ride in the park. Liv is a stand-alone brand specializing in cycles, gear and products for women. Take A Kid Mountain Biking Day is an annual national event created by the International Mountain Bicycle Association (IMBA) in 2004 with a goal of introducing mountain biking to the next generation.

After the mountain biking events end, participants are invited to bring out their blankets and lawn chairs and grab a bite to eat at the food trucks and listen to the fun tunes of 4th Street Band. Francis Howell teacher named Missouri Marketing Teacher of the Year Francis Howell High School marketing teacher and DECA advisor Larry Anders has been named the 2018 Marketing Educator of the Year by the Missouri Marketing & Cooperative Education Association (MCEA). The honor recognizes his significant contributions to quality programming that has resulted in high student achievement in marketing and cooperative education.

Anders has dedicated three decades to teaching and mentoring at FHHS, and he says he is honored by the recognition.

“This award means a lot to me because there are so many great marketing teachers in Missouri. To be recognized by the state as a teacher that exemplifies excellence in what we teach is awesome,” he said.

Both marketing classes and DECA provide students with real-world learning opportunities that Anders says pave the way for success.

Wentzville student attends conference on national affairs Timberland High School sophomore Abby McCallum became the first student from her school to attend the YMCA Youth Conference on National Affairs (CONA) in Black Mountain, North Carolina June 30 to July 5. Only 25 students were chosen to represent the state of Missouri at the 51st annual conference which focuses on increasing awareness of the federal government and how it affects state and international politics. McCallum joined almost 700 students from around the country, debating student-written proposals on a variety of topics, in a forum designed to allow students to express their own opinions, while exploring and learning about ideals different from their own.

McCallum’s proposal dealt with increasing funding to National Parks; she also presented a proposal for an ill student from another state during debate.

“My favorite part of CONA was the atmosphere. Everyone was caring, respectful, kind and informed. Even when debating, no one feared to speak their mind. After debate, people would discuss the issues instead of angrily arguing and not listening to each other,” McCallum said. “I met people from all over the country with all different ideas, yet at the end day we all came together and laughed. This type of mentality is important to show it is possible to talk and understand the other side. One of the most inspiring things that

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and partners invite the public to a free screening of the documentary film “Hometown Habitat: Stories of Bringing Nature Home” at St. Charles Community College SSB Auditorium at 4601 Mid Rivers Mall Drive in Cottleville. In the film, renowned entomologist, author, and native plant expert Dr. Doug Tallamy narrates inspiring, true stories that show how everyday “heroes” can help restore nature one garden at a time.

Aug. 31: Food drive

When you are visiting a branch of the St. Charles City-County Library District in O’Fallon during August you will see a large red container on wheels that says “Food Drive.” The Kiwanis Club of O’Fallon is sponsoring this drive to help the O’Fallon Salvation Army Food Pantry replenish their shelves. Donations of food slow down during the summer months and the food pantry needs help with providing certain types of food for people in the community. Some of the items they need the most right now include: canned meat (most important), cream of chicken and mushroom soup, SpagettiOs, pasta sauce in a can, ketchup, mayo, saltine crackers and instant rice or bags of rice. Any other food donations are welcome too. Drop your donations off at the Middendorf-Kredell Branch, Deer Run Branch or the Library Express at Winghaven Branch through Aug. 31.

Sept. 1: Car show

The Trinity Lutheran Church Benefit Car Show takes place at 1307 W Boone St. in Troy from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (Rain date is Sept. 15.) The show will include 16 classes for classic cars, trucks and motorcycles from 1900 to current, and trophies will be presented from first to third place in each class, as well as special awards for Ladies Choice and People’s Choice. Registration is from 10:00 a.m. – noon. Participant judging is from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. and awards will be at 3:00 p.m. Cost is only $20 per class. Dash plaques to the first 50 registered entries. Sept. 2: Car show

The S.L.I.C.K. (St. Louis Independent Car Club) will hold its 21st Annual Car Show benefiting The Backstoppers at the Harvester Lions Club at 4835 Central School Rd. in St. Charles. (Rain date is Sept. 9). The Lions Club will also be providing food and drink. Cars can register for judging for a nominal $20 and if the owner prefers, he or she can “Display Only” for $15. Pre-registration for judging includes one car show t-shirt in your size choice. Registration takes place from 8 a.m. to noon with an awards presentation at 3 p.m.

The men came up short in a hard-fought game, but eventually fell to John Wood 0-2. The Cougars played with 10 men for most of the game due to an early red card.

“That early red card really hurt us,” stated Coach Lancaster. “I felt that we controlled most of the game, but playing with 10 men on the road in a hostile environment is a tough thing to do. ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald’ could be more magical fun

J.K. Rowling, the creator of all things Harry Potter, is a writer that never wastes a single word. In the seven books documenting Harry’s adventures at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, even seemingly throwaway lines became important plot points in later novels.

The concept of a wand choosing its witch or wizard and recognizing a new master, for instance, was crucial in Potter’s last battle with Voldemort.

In an earlier book, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” was mentioned as a textbook used at Hogwarts. In 2016, Rowling and director David Yates created the backstory of that book in a film of the same name. In it, Eddie Redmayne plays Newt Scamander, the future author of the book who studies and cares for magical creatures. He arrives in the United States to release Frank, a Thunderbird, in Arizona, but he runs afoul of the local magical community as well as a group seeking to destroy witches and wizards.

Set decades before Harry’s mom and dad died, “Fantastic Beasts” is a whimsical adventure.

Dan Folger plays Jacob Kowalski, a cannery worker with dreams of opening his own bakery.

Classified as a “No-Maj” (non-magical being) by the Magical Congress of the United States of America (MACUSA), Jacob bumps into Newt at

Getting Schooled The time has rolled around again for those three little words which bring such unmatched sweetness into parent’s lives.

“I love you?”

Pshaw, no! It’s not anywhere near Valentine‘s Day. Hint: It has to do with absolute joy.

“Bacon, lettuce, tomato?”

Oooo, that’s a close second. You’re getting warmer! Think exultation, rapture and unshackled freedom.

“Oh! Why didn’t you say so! BACK TO SCHOOL!” Bingo!

So the past three months are just a nightmare of stressful memories: Painful flashbacks of summer zip by when James and Johnny were dishing out Ninja kicks over the last red Popsicle and landed a few which required trips to Quick Care for stitches. Then there’s the time Winston put a head lock that turned little Violet’s face as purple as her name because she ate the T-Rex in his dinosaur fruit snacks.

There was no depending on the older kids to intervene. They were as useless as cat clothes.

They sat around all summer taking selfies of themselves yawning and sending them to other bored friends trying to outdo who was having the most boring summer. Across the neighborhood their wearied little voices could be heard wailing in unison, “There’s nothing to do!” When this activity wore down, the girls would paste their faces back into YouTube videos of Justin Bieber while the boys ruptured their thumbs playing marathon games of “Minecraft.”

Ahhh, but now school has commenced. You can look forward to lazy days of alarms going off at 5 a.m. for the early morning routine, dashing after buses as they pull away from the curb, homework help with “new” math problems so

complex Google can’t even solve them, science fair projects you end up completing and emergency runs to drop off assignments and forgotten lunch boxes left at home.

Then there’s the non-stop chauffeuring to sports practices and then off to attend ball games, band and choir concerts, plays, cheer competitions and debates. And never mind about trying to make it to work on time. You undoubtedly will get caught trailing behind the school bus brigade. Darn those double yellow lines and jail time for passing one.

So along with the school cross walk waits, you can expect to get to work by lunchtime only to arrive and find out that your child has forgotten his lunch box, math assignment and baseball mitt.

Next summer’s only nine months away.

Cindy Moore is the mother of three superlative kids, servant of two self-indulgent felines and wife to one nifty husband. Her ficticious occupation? Archeological Humorist: someone who unearths absurdity and hilarity in strange and unusual places including public restrooms, the lint filter, and church meetings.

Most recently, she excavated a find in her neighbor’s bird feeder.
