Celebrate St. Peters 2017 promises plenty of fun and food for the whole family at 370 Lakeside Park

By Brett Auten Back and better than ever, Celebrate St. Peters will be rocking and rolling over a twoday period With plenty of live music, family entertainment, and tasty fair food, there is bound to be something for everyone’s liking at Celebrate St. Peters 2017. The annual festival, put on by the city of St. Peters, will be Friday and Saturday, Sept. 15-16, at 370 Lakeside Park in St. Peters.

“Celebrate St. Peters has something for everyone, whether you’re a music fan or a fireworks fan, whether you like to ride carnival rides or whether you just like to try all the tasty food from the different vendors you’ll have a great time at our festival,” St. Peters Mayor Len Pagano said. “We have free kids activities and entertainment for all ages. Every year, we enjoy meeting new friends and making new ones at this wonderful community event. My wife, Joyce, and I hope to see you along the lake.”

Parking is always a pain in the neck at festivals and can put you in a grumpy mood before your first corn dog. The city of St. Peters has found a way to ease that burden.

There will be free parking available in the

general parking area at the festival along with free shuttle rides to and from the event. Celebrate St. Peters 2017 will feature a new satellite parking option at Mid Rivers Mall in two locations; the first at Executive Centre Parkway entrance near Planet Fitness, and the second at Grand Teton Drive entrance across from the St. Peters Justice Center. Several free shuttles will be running to and from the park all weekend long.

From a music standpoint, four nationallytouring bands will be playing sounds from the 1970s and 1980s. Leading things off Friday night on the Main Stage are Pablo Cruise and Ambrosia, presented by 106.5 The Arch and Mid Rivers Newsmagazine. Firefall and Orleans will grace the Main Stage on Saturday night, presented by KSHE Main Stage entertainment will start at 6:30 p.m. both Friday and Saturday night. Blues Plus with the Sliders will open the Main Stage on Friday. A fireworks display will light the sky over the lake in between Saturday night’s Main Stage acts. All of the live entertainment at Celebrate St. Peters is free. All you need to do is just bring some lawn chairs and take in the tunes.

Along with these Main Stage acts, the Celebrate Stage will be thumping on Saturday from 2:30-5:30 p.m. with local favorites Butch Wax and The Hollywoods with R&B legend Theo Peoples.

Celebrate St. Peters 2017 will open to the public with carnival rides, games and vendor booths along with tons of food and unique items for sale from 5-10:30 p.m. Friday, Sept.

Remembering the eclipse A few weeks ago many of us experienced a once-in-a-lifetime event—a full solar eclipse. The eclipse, which proved to live up to the hype and attention, awed and wowed the old and the young. For me, it was all about the science and the other phenomena that accompanied the solar eclipse.

With my glasses covering my eyes, I watched like thousands of others to the slow Pac-man movement of the moon over the sun. It was inspiring during this time that people from all over stopped what they were doing to witness a spectacular show in the sky. In many ways, observing people watching the eclipse was more satisfying than the actual eclipse itself. It seemed like for a moment the world stopped and people joined together to witness the eclipse.

During the eclipse several additional events were occurring, for example in Columbia, Missouri the temperature at the start of the eclipse was at 90 degrees, during totality it fell to 82 degrees. In Chesterfield the temperature prior to the eclipse was in the lower 90s, but when totality arrived temperatures dropped to around 84 degrees before climbing back into the 90s after the eclipse. Temperature was one feature that meteorologists like myself were looking at before, during and after the eclipse. Areas where 100 percent totality was experienced had the greatest drop in temperature.

Another feature were the winds before totality. Initially, the winds felt warm and right before totality many of the people I was around felt the winds became cooler. Prior to the eclipse reaching totality birds were flying – but quickly as totality loomed the birds departed the sky. In fact, the feeling of night created an eerie calm and silence – many felt like their bodies were tiring.

A 360-degree sunset surrounded us as the moon overtook the sun. Even with the smallest piece of the sun illuminated, the show in the sky was phenomenal. Areas of greys, blues, reds and orange filled the horizon at a 360 degree radius. Mars, Venus and Jupiter were easily viewable during totality.

Many of the flowers closed up as they would during the night. The chirping and music of crickets began dancing along with the katydids seeking a mate for the night.

Many of us got to see the diamond ring that as the sun was enveloped by the moon. Some folks got the idea at the moment of the diamond ring to pop the question of “Will you marry me?” Shadow bands became visible along light-colored surfaces just before and after totality. It looked like the waves of a swimming pool. Flying insects looked like little slivers of light dancing in the sky as their shadow was illuminated on the sidewalk. It looked as if nature was dancing as totality occurred and slivers of slender grey flickering waves of the sun’s rays slowly disappear.

Baily’s beads were easily observed along the dwindling edge of the sun as the moon overtook it. Since the moon isn’t perfectly smooth, it provided bright beads of sun blinking on an off as the moon moved over the sun.

Street lights came on for a moment and the calmness of evening was felt, but not lasting long the sun returned and the lights shut off. The moment of darkness and the sky colors will be aonce-in-a-lifetime experience of dusk and dawn all within a short amount of time.

As the eclipse came to an end, the northwest sky became brighter and daylight returned. The sounds of the nighttime songs of crickets and katy-

dids faded. The winds felt warm again and the short drop in temperature in August climbed upwards. The moon bid farewell to the sun – for now, and daylight returned. For many of us, we felt a little odd – perhaps tired, our necks a bit sore from looking up, and for some who were tempted to view without solar eclipse glasses – trust me its human nature to want to look – had a quick sense of worry that something would go wrong with their vision.

The eclipse was over. The event was done. Our solar eclipse glasses could now be stored away until the next eclipse for the area that will move through in 2024. The atmospheric conditions will be studied for years to come and the talk about the eclipse will be a lesson for many – the show of Mother Nature can bring together people – a sense of unity and many emotions as the eclipse overtook the sun.

Just think you watched one of nature’s most phenomenal shows. I hope you will carry those feelings your senses provided you during the eclipse for years to come. If you were like me the song “Total Eclipse of the Heart” was running through my head as totality occurred – or was it just me who thought of that song as I was chewing my piece of Eclipse gum?

Paid internship database for college students established by Missouri Job Center of St. Charles County

Experts say college students who do an internship – or two, or three – are more likely to have jobs waiting for them when they get out of school.

But how do they quickly and easily find out about available paid internships? For those looking in St. Charles County, it just got easy!

A new online internship database developed by the St. Charles County Department of Workforce & Business Development, operator of the Missouri Job Center of St. Charles County, is the answer. The database is comprised of internship positions for skilled occupations paying $10 an hour or more.

“One way to engage the next generation of workforce who are now going away to college is to showcase all the outstanding employment opportunities waiting for them in St. Charles County when they return home for summer break,” says Scott J. Drachnik, Executive Director of the Missouri Job Center of St. Charles County. “We want all these future engineers, accountants, IT professionals, doctors, scientists and other skilled workers to know there are paid internships available right here, in their field of study, when they come home for summer, winter and spring

breaks. There is no reason for them to move away for a job when they graduate, because St. Charles County is an award-winning place to live and to work.”

To be included in this online clearinghouse, interested local companies should send intern job descriptions to the Missouri Job Center of St. Charles County, along with basic information such as length of internship, pay, etc. Positions are added to the new “Paid Internships” section of the center’s website: http://sccmo.org/Internships “We are ready to assist any local company offering paid internships that are linked to skilled occupations or projects connected to a college student’s field of study,” says Drachnik, emphasizing that internships for unskilled positions will not be included in this database.

Cornerstone United Methodist Church Food Pantry accepting donations Cornerstone United Methodist Church Food Pantry gives out bread, canned goods and sometimes has clothing and house wares. The food pantry has been in operation for over 40 years and is open every Wednesday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. (except the week of Thanksgiving). The food pantry is located at 1151 Tom Ginnever Ave.

South Shore Road Bridge now open The St. Charles County Highway Department reopened South Shore Road Bridge between Seeburger Road and Harbor Grove Drive on Aug. 28.

The completed improvements include a new, larger box culvert, wider lanes, shoulders and safety guardrail improvements.

“Mississippi River flooding extended the closure time, but the roadway is open now and much improved,” says St. Charles County Engineer Craig Tajkowski. “While the roadway is open to traffic, the contractor still is wrapping up minor items adjacent to the roadway through the

next week. We encourage all motorists passing through to follow the posted speed limit and to be alert for construction personnel working as they finalize the project.”

This road project is part of a continuing effort

Volunteers needed for the St. Charles Missouri River clean-up Missouri River Relief (MRR) is hosting a large-scale, community-wide, boat-based trash clean-up of the Missouri River on Sept. 16, mobilizing hundreds of volunteers from around the region. The event will be headquartered at Bishop’s Landing, the river access behind the Lewis & Clark Boat House & Nature Center.

This is Missouri River Relief ’s annual river clean-up in the eastern reach of the state.

Each year, different stretches

of the Missouri River are targeted for trash clean-up, the western, central and eastern.

The last river clean-up in St. Charles was conducted in 2015 and drew 256 volunteers who removed 7.7 tons of trash and 169 tires.

River clean-ups are great experiences for families, individuals, civic and church groups, school clubs, students, and corporate teams. Children and youth are inspired to make a difference in their commu-

nities and educate their peers about the importance of protecting and keeping our waterways clean. Missouri River Relief welcomes participants of all ages and abilities. Volunteers will receive an appreciation lunch for their efforts, as well as t-shirt and reusable water bottle.

Volunteers sign-in starting at 8:30 a.m. to begin boarding the boats at Bishop’s Landing at 9 a.m. Volunteers will be shuttled to pre-scouted locations along the river to pick up tons of trash. The clean-up runs from 9 a.m. to noon, rain or shine. Trash bags, gloves, and other necessary supplies will be provided. Motor boats will

be operated by Missouri River Relief, as well as scientists and agents with the Missouri Department of Conservation and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

Individuals, families and groups are encouraged to participate. People are urged to sign-up online at www.riverrelief.org. Though pre-registration is preferred, it’s not required; people can show up the morning of the clean-up to register. FHSD sets new record for AP scholars

The Francis Howell School District has 242 students, the most in district history, who have been named Advanced Placement (AP) Scholars for 2016-17. The AP program recognizes high school students who have demonstrated outstanding college-level achievement through AP courses and exams with the prestigious AP Scholar Awards.

“The rigorous coursework provided by these classes allows our students to earn college credit, develop college level skills and increase their understanding of different career pathways,” said Superintendent Dr. Mary Hendricks-Harris. “Our students continue to rise to meet the increasing expectations of these courses. We are very proud of our students who earned AP Scholar recognition.”

There are four different levels of the AP award that students can achieve. FHSD had 121 students who received scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams, and earned the AP Scholar award. The AP Scholar with Honor award is granted to students who receive an av-

erage score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. FHSD had 48 students who earned the AP Scholar with Honor award. FHSD had 73 students who received an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams, and earned the AP Scholar with Distinction award.

The National AP Scholar award is granted to students in the United States who receive an average score of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. Francis Howell had eight students earn the prestigious National AP Scholar award.

The majority of AP Award recipients were graduating seniors, but there are 71 students who earned AP Awards that are still enrolled in FHSD for the 2017-18 school year. Annual conference being held to address child abuse The Child Center, Inc. and the St. Charles County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office will host the 13th annual Midwest Justice for Children Conference (MJCC) on September 12-15.

Thanks, in part, to a generous grant from the Missouri Task Force on Children’s Justice the three-day conference offers an opportunity for local professionals to learn how to better serve victims of child sexual abuse.

The ​Midwest ​Justice ​for ​Children ​Conference​ began ​in ​an ​effort ​to ​provide ​quality ​training,​ at ​an ​affordable ​price, ​to ​other ​Child ​Advocacy​ Center ​staff, ​members ​of ​the ​Multi-Disciplinary​ Team ​including ​members of ​law ​enforcement,​ juvenile ​justice ​workers, ​mental ​health ​therapists, ​Children’s ​Division ​workers, ​prosecuting​ attorney’s, ​child ​and ​family ​advocacy ​workers,​ school ​counselors, ​forensic ​interviewers ​and​ other ​professionals ​working ​in ​the ​field ​of ​human ​ services. Each year the conference welcomes local, regional and national speakers who are experts in their field who provide topical and evidence-based training.

Physical or sexual abuse cases against children require specialized and complex training from professionals to help reduce anxiety and uncertainty of child victims. When talking about child

sexual abuse the national numbers are shocking: • 20 percent of children will be sexually abused in some form before their eighth birthday.

• 90 percent of child victims are abused by someone they like, love, or live with.

• 60 percent of child victims will never tell anyone.

In an effort for continuing education related to child trauma, the MJCC will be held at the DoubleTree by Hilton St. Louis hotel located at 16625 Swingley Ridge Rd in Chesterfield. There is also a pre-conference session being offered on Sept.

11. The cost for three-day registration is $250.

The St. Charles Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution donated thirteen “Teacher Birthday Cakes” to three St. Charles’ local schools.

The ladies wore period costumes to deliver the cakes to kindergarten teachers at Discovery Elementary, Orchard Farms Elementary and Progress South Elementary. This was a surprise arranged for the

teachers by the chapter.

The chapter contacted the principals and arranged to deliver the cakes and personally thank these teachers. The “cakes” were full of school supplies such as crayons, scissors, stickers, glue and markers. They also distributed 375 American flags to the children.

Patti Dickherber, organizer of the project, said, “The DAR’s

goal is to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism. We wanted to do something in our community to further those goals and we felt this was a way to show our appreciation, in some small way, to the hardworking teachers of our children and grandchildren.” www.reidfloors.com

If your nonprofit group or business is looking for an enjoyable fundraiser, the city of O’Fallon has openings for organizations to create unique holiday scenes as part of the annual Celebration of Lights display in Fort Zumwalt Park. The event opens Nov. 24 (the day after Thanksgiving) at 6 p.m. and continues nightly (except on Christmas, Dec. 25) through Dec. 30.

To participate, organizations must be 501c3 tax exempt, willing to create and maintain a unique, hand-crafted Christmas-themed exhibit at the Celebration of Lights display and help staff the gates two-to-three nights during the event. Partic-

ipating groups also must have representatives present at the Old-Fashioned Holiday Stroll for pedestrians on Dec. 11 and 12.

In return, organizations will be compensated for their time working the gate and also receive funds to cover a percentage of material fees and hours invested in building a scene, and have a sign displaying the group’s name.

Fire damages a two-unit apartment building in St. Charles

St. Charles City Fire Department responded to 1220 North Second Street just after 9 a.m. on Aug. 22 for a report of smoke coming from a building. Bystanders called 911 after noticing light smoke from the roof of the structure. Upon arrival crews forced entry and found a small fire in an upstairs apartment. No residents were home at the time. The fire was placed under control at 9:25 a.m. and the damage was limited to two apartments within the building. The cause is still under investigation. SCFD was assisted

by Central County Fire and Rescue, Orchard Farm Fire Department and St. Charles County Ambulance District.

• Experience an adventure hiking through Matson Hill Park on Saturday, Sept. 10, exploring the vast natural-surface trails as we look for signs of wildlife and identify local flora. Hiking distances range from two to five miles and are set at a casual pace. Bye Bye Baby Stop…wait…listen? What’s that noise? It’s the sound of me blinking. Wow! I forgot my eyelids made noise. I haven’t been able to hear that kind of silence for three weeks now.

My ears are slowly readjusting to peace. That’s because I’ve had a houseful of noisemakers. At any given time, seven grand kiddies under the age of 11 were inside using my home as a bounce house and constantly testing the acoustics by squealing, yelling, fighting, biting, pushing, pinching or poking. There was no such thing as quiet time.

I would acquire some semblance of calm by issuing each a time out sentence: five-to-life without parole. But of course, their parents would smuggle them a Twinkie with a file in it and they’d escape within the hour.

What I learned: All must have the same exact thing at the same time. The toys I had quickly lost their appeal and were left untouched in a compost heap of boredom. Fast thinking, I gave one an empty paper towel roll to use as a pirate spy glass. Genius…or so I thought. It became a thing of supreme coveting and envy. Mass whining ensued. Suddenly, all small beings were pushing, punching and poking to acquire it. Then, I was soundly accused of favoritism by the parents of the other kids. I had to hurriedly unroll four full rolls of towels to get at the cardboard middles so as not to show preference and crush their “fragile developing egos.”

If one child is given the last cherry Popsicle and the others are forced to select lesser options such as gross green or disgusting orange – self-esteems start to pucker and crack and death results. In between, shrieking ensues and parents are notified and accusations of discrimination are flung. This results in an emergency trip to the grocery store whereupon I must sneakily pull every red sicle out of the pre-packaged bags and consolidate them into another one before the store manager is alerted. If caught, I will be banished from the chain for fiveto-life without them accepting my double coupons ever! It is a risk I must take.

I sit back and reflect on the last weeks while scratching my head. Wow, scratching my head sounds like someone is rubbing sandpaper up against a live mic. All this silence is gonna make my eardrums explode!

Cindy Moore is the mother of three superlative kids, servant of two self-indulgent felines and wife to one nifty husband. Her ficticious occupation? Archeological Humorist: someone who unearths absurdity and hilarity in strange and unusual places including public restrooms, the lint filter, and church meetings. Most recently, she excavated a find in her neighbor’s bird feeder.

18- Sept. 21. The mission of Democracy Days is “to examine the history, health and functioning of democracy in America and abroad.” The multi-day forum has been held annually at SCC since September 2001.

Cottleville to host Alzheimer’s walk The ‘St. Charles Walk to End Alzheimer’s’ will take place on Sept. 30 at St. Charles Community College. Registration starts at 8 a.m. with the ceremony beginning at 9 a.m. and the walk at 10 a.m.

Lemon Berry Cheesecake Bars Recipe courtesy of Lindsay Conchar of Life, Love & Sugar on behalf of KitchenAid | Makes: 12-16 bars Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs 5 tablespoons butter, melted 16 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar, divided 3 tablespoons lemon juice 1 tablespoon lemon zest 1 1/4 cups heavy whipping cream, divided fresh berries

Directions: Line 9-inch square cake pan with parchment paper, bringing up over sides.

Combine graham cracker crumbs and butter, and stir until well combined. Press crumb mixture evenly into bottom of cake pan. Set aside.

In bowl of stand mixer, beat cream cheese, 1 cup powdered sugar, lemon juice and lemon zest until smooth. In separate bowl, whip heavy whipping cream until it starts to thicken. Add remaining powdered sugar and continue to whip until stiff

peaks form. Gently fold half the whipped cream into cheesecake mixture and place remainder in refrigerator to use later. Spread cheesecake mixture evenly in cake pan.

Refrigerate cheesecake at least 4 hours, or until firm.

Use parchment paper on sides to lift bars out of pan then cut into squares. Use remaining whipped cream to top cheesecake bars then add fresh berries, as desired. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Place puff pastry sheet on lightly floured work surface and cut each sheet into 12 3-inch squares.

Transfer pastries onto baking sheet and bake 10 minutes, until pastries have puffed up and are golden.

Cool completely on wire rack.

“All Saints”

‘All Saints’ is a solid faith-based film

In a market dominated by horror movies and the latest superhero adventure, faith-based films can still make an impact. According to “The Wrap,” releases such as “Heaven is For Real” and “God’s Not Dead” did rather well at the box office. Sometimes, though, a good film, such as the inspirational real-life football drama “Greater,” can’t make enough to cover the costs of production due to poor distribution.

“All Saints,” a new release, has all the makings of a good movie, but it needs an audience. John Corbett stars as Michael Spurlock, the new pastor at the All Saints Episcopal Church in Smyrna, Tennessee. With a dwindling congregation and a huge mortgage, the diocese puts the church up for sale. Pastor Michael’s job is to simply conduct services, do an inventory and prepare the property for a new owner.

He has an epiphany, though, when he meets Ye Win (Nelson Lee), a refugee from the Karen State in Myanmar (Burma). Win and other Karen immigrants settle in Smyrna and join the church.

When he learns that his new members are expert farmers, Pastor Michael wants to grow cash crops to keep the doors open.

“All Saints” has definite appeal, primarily because the plot maintains its true-to-life feeling. Michael Spurlock’s story is especially inspiring: he worked in corporate sales before going into the seminary. His wife Aimeé, played here

by Cara Buono (“Stranger Things”), was an opera singer and came with Spurlock to Smyrna. In the film, her character is shown teaching young Karen refugees how to sing church hymns.

Many parishioners play themselves in the film, but there are some familiar faces in the cast. Barry Corbin, Corbett’s co-star on the classic TV series “Northern Exposure,” plays Forrest, a cranky member of the All Saints congregation.

Forrest doesn’t take a shine to the new pastor and lets him know it. Corbin elevates his character above a stereotype, though, showing that he is trying to help in his own way.

David Keith (“An Officer and a Gentleman”) also is on hand as Boyd, a businessman who helps All Saints get their farming operation off the ground. If the piece has any sort of villain, it would be Gregory Allan Williams (“Baywatch Nights”) as Bishop Eldon Thompson.

He really wants to sell off the church property and send Pastor Mike over to another assignment, not start a farm.

With its realistic performances and true-life story, “All Saints” is a winner.

It’s the kind of film that truly deserves an audience. At a time when there are mixed feelings about immigrants coming to the United States, the movie shows how much refugees contributed to the growth of this country.

“All Saints,” rated PG, currently is playing in wide release.
