The Foundry Art Centre in St. Charles is beginning to bring art and events back to the community after closures due to COVID-19

By Brett Auten After months of grappling with the coronavirus pandemic, like the rest of us, the Foundry Art Centre is getting its footing again.

The Foundry Art Centre, located at 520 N Main Center in St Charles, has touted and trumpeted the arts of all variety since 2004 as both artists and patrons, of any age, have continually found ways to engage there.

After a quiet summer, the centre is revving up for a fall full of exhibitions, performances, education opportunities, and of course, works from its studio artists.

“A lot of planning and care went into these events,” Melanie Sanders, the Foundry Art Centre’s Events Manager, said. “There will be plenty of masks and social distancing. Some of our events will be outside so there will be room to stretch out.”

Among its busy calendar is an upcoming Plein Air (painting outdoors) and an old school rock-n-roll concert by Almost Famous for those who prefer the open spaces of being outside. As the nights shorten and pumpkin-flavored everything starts to appear in grocery stores, the centre will have a one-of-a-kind haunted house that will be

free to the public. You will have to register for times to go through it and its fright level will be closer to rated G and PG-13.

“It will be creepy but there will be no one grabbing you or running after you with a chainsaw,” Sanders said with a laugh.

The centre was closed from March 16 to June 19 due to the COVID-19 outbreak. It has shortened its hours some and is open Tuesdays through Saturdays.

The centre covers over 5,000-square feet of exhibition space where it hosts international exhibitions and is the home of any type of See ‘ART’ page 2

The Grand Hall provides a stage and space for local productions, touring performance groups, and community concerts. Visitors can also interact with artists at work upstairs who could be toiling over any number of formats.

Classrooms and creative areas are all over the place. Both adult and children’s workshops and classes are offered throughout the year. The Baue Family Children’s Gallery hosts children’s artwork from around the region with over 200 schools having displayed work in the gallery.

The Foundry Art Centre is a nonprofit organization that relies on the public’s support to keep the facility free to the public. The centre also has a strong tradition of support from volunteers from all over the community working in nearly every area there.

was once a train car factory; a 1920’s structure formerly owned by American Car & Foundry. Rather than demolish the 36,800 square foot building, the community of St. Charles completed a $2.2 million renovation and opened the region’s premiere art center in the spring of 2004. This background leads to the centre celebrating the building’s 100th year next month.

Lake Saint Louis Police Department giving back to the community with Red Cross Blood Drive The Lake Saint Louis Police Department will host a community blood drive with the American Red Cross on Sept. 24 from 1 to 7 p.m., at the Lake Saint Louis Civic Center at 200 Civic Center Drive.

“Hosting a blood drive coincides with the Lake Saint Louis Police Department’s core values of giving back to the community,” said Officer Susie Ochs, Community Resource Officer. “With a simple blood donation, we have the ability to help save the life

of someone who could be a coworker, loved one or neighbor.”

The American Red Cross urges healthy individuals to give blood now to help ensure a steady supply for patients. The Red Cross has extra precautions in place to protect donors, volunteers and staff. In order to limit the number of people in the room you must make an appointment. No walk-ins will be accepted and we are unable to accommodate guests. A face

covering or mask are also required when presenting to donate.

All successful donors will receive free antibody testing. To make an appointment go to redcrossblood.org and enter sponsor code: LSLPD or call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Completion of a RapidPass online health history questionnaire found at redcrossblood.org/rapidpass is encouraged to help speed up the donation process.

Chabad’s St. Charles Jewish Family Network announces High Holiday and fall programming St. Charles County represents nearly 10 percent of all Jews living in the St. Louis region, including a strong representation of families with young children.

(According to the most recent community study, 41 percent of Jewish households in St. Charles have at least one child living at home and of all children in Jewish households in St. Charles, almost 21 percent are under five years old).

Responding to this need and with significant funding support from the Jewish Federation of St. Louis, the newly established Chabad Jewish Center of St. Charles County launched the St. Charles Jewish Family Network earlier this year.

“The goal is to create a warm and child-friendly community for young Jewish families living in the County,” said Bassy Landa, 27, mother of two girls, ages two and one, who is spearheading the network and directs the St. Charles Chabad with her husband, Rabbi Chaim Landa, 30. “By offering programs, networking opportunities, and support for this important and growing demographic, we really hope to enhance Jewish life for these young families.”

The Landas made the permanent move to the county in February. About a month later, the COVID-19 social distancing rules went into effect.

“As a startup community, it’s definitely been a challenging time, though there has also been an extra need for community – young families are really looking for that connection,” said Landa. “I also feel that this time has created more opportunities to virtually

connect with so many young moms; it’s been special.”

Over the past months the network has hosted a variety of ongoing weekly programs, including Shabbatto-Go care packages, the Driveway Schmooze initiative and a virtual Jewish Bedtime Story series which they’ve been featuring on their Facebook page (Facebook.com/JewishStCharles).

Additionally, they’ve brought some special programs to the young community, including a pre-Passover Bedtime Story—which they partnered with the Jewish Federation’s PJ Library on—and a virtual Model Matzah Bakery, and the distribution of Sederto-Go kits and Shavuot-to-Go care packages.

Now, after conducting an informal community survey and in keeping with social distancing measures, they’ve announced their programming schedule for the High Holiday and fall season, which includes: Pre-Rosh Hashanah Mommy & Me: A morning of holiday song and fun, followed by a light brunch.

Greater St. Charles County Chamber of Commerce seeking nominations for service awards Since 1957, the Greater St. Charles County Chamber of Commerce has recognized local leaders for their dedication to serving the Greater St. Charles County community. Nominations for the 2020 Citizen of the Years and Lifetime Distinguished Service awards are currently being accepted. The Citizen of the Years award is designed to recognize the lifelong achievements of a citizen for actions, generosity and service, broad-based community involvement in a nonpaid position, and leadership in organizations above and beyond the call of duty on behalf of the community. The Lifetime Distinguished Service award is designed to recognize the achievements of a citizen for their service in the areas of Humanitarian, Civic and Cultural.

Inspiration Corner: When hypocrites ruin religion “What is the value of a soul?” – Anonymous I stood in the church parking lot next to my car.

I saw the happy group frolicking around in the sand playing volleyball. The joyful cries echoed into the warm summer evening as my friends tossed the ball back and forth. I hung back because the tattered shreds of my heart throbbed with an unbearable ache. My boyfriend, Buster, (not his real name) a devoutly religious man and the son of a pastor had broken up with me on the cusp of planning our wedding.

I looked down at my body as tears spilled down my cheeks. I thought getting in shape would make me happy. I had lost 125 pounds, but that had not cemented the relationship. He broke faith with me, and as I learned later, was a very poor steward of the truth. He was a hypocrite and – as I looked at the other church people – I realized, so were they. So, I rejected their brand of religion and walked away. The adage proved true; with friends like those, who needs enemies?

What I didn’t realize at the time was that when I rejected religion, I rejected the notion that my soul had any value at all. The man who rejected my mind, heart and body crushed my spirit. I never considered my heart would heal, my mind would recover and my spirit would once again soar. My soul was another matter entirely.

Jesus once asked a provocative question, “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? For what can a man give in return for his soul?”

The teacher seemed to intimate that the soul has immense value, more value even than the whole world! It’s amazing to think about, really.

It was the reason he wrapped mortal flesh around immortality and entered the world; to save the souls of people. His message was one of love. It was in fact so important that the apostle John wrote, “Whoever does not love abides in death.”

(1 John 3:14) My infatuation with Buster was very short-sided. I thought love was the mushy feelings that bubbled up when two people spent time together and found they had a few things in common.

I later learned love is a deep and abiding commitment that perseveres through adversity. The Apostle Paul said it this way, “love never fails.”

Love makes one willing to die on a cross.

I rejected religion until I encountered Jesus.

His love never fails. Friends have failed me, and I have failed friends, but God has never failed me.

Today, if you have rejected religion on the basis that church people are hypocrites, take heart!

Make lasting memories at one-of-a-kind Klondike family campout Bring the family out for a primitive campout like no other Sept. 26 and Sept. 27, at beautiful Klondike Park at 4600 Highway 94 S. in Augusta. This camping adventure is packed with exciting activities the entire family will enjoy and is being held at St. Charles County’s premier camping destination, located along the scenic Missouri River Valley.

The fun begins at 2 p.m. on Saturday after campers check-in with Park Ranger Ashley Maue. After setting up camp, participants will get to fully experience the great outdoors while casting a line for fish, paddleboarding, playing games, going on a guided hike, and eating s’more by the fire. Families are responsible for bringing their own food, beverages, and camping supplies including wood. Supplies to make s’mores treats will be provided. All St. Charles County Park camping rules and regulations will be followed during the two-day event. Glass bottles and gas generators are not permitted.

Dogs are welcome but must be leashed at all times. Quiet hours begin at 10 p.m. and check out is at 12 p.m. on Sunday.

The Klondike Family Campout is limited to 10 families and each family can have no more than two tents or five guests per campsite. The cost is $20 per family and pre-registration required. Library Express at Discovery Village to close Oct. 31 The Library Express at Discovery Village, a St. Charles City-County Library branch located in northwestern St. Charles County will close on Oct. 31. The library has purchased property nearby and has plans to open the new Cliff View Branch in early 2021.

The Library Express at Discovery Village opened in 2006. The property was leased as a temporary measure to address the needs of the growing population in western St. Charles County. The new Cliff View Branch will serve local residents with a permanent building that will allow for classes and events along with convenient customer access, and offer the same great collection of materials.

Located just three miles from the Library Express at Discovery Village, the Cliff View Branch at 10 Cliff View Drive in Wentzville Bluffs at I-70 and Hwy Z (formerly Six North Cafe), provides easy access on and off of I-70. In addition, Cliff View’s design includes drive-up services and outdoor spaces that are currently unavailable in any of the library’s western locations.

Library Director Jason Kuhl says, “The Library Express at Discovery Village has been a convenient library branch for residents in the area and we know it will be missed. Cliff View will provide the same great features - friendly staff and easy access to materials - along with many other services and spaces that we were unable to offer at the Discovery Village location. We are confident that once our Discovery Village customers visit Cliff View, they will have a new neighborhood branch to call their own.”

Cliff View’s movable shelves and walls will accommodate a variety of events, study areas, children’s classes, and more. Customers will be able to pick up holds and return materials using a drive-up window. A fenced and covered outdoor patio will expand seating and programming space during much of the year. And the Cliff View Branch will also be the first St. Charles City-County Library branch to offer self-service lending, returns, and public computing after-hours.

Meridian Waste acquires roll off assets of Rapid Response, Inc. Meridian Waste Missouri, LLC, a subsidiary of Meridian Waste, an integrated, non-hazardous solid waste services company, has acquired the assets of all roll off trucks, containers, and contracts from Rapid Response, Inc. located in Wentzville, effective Sept. 1.

The roll off assets and associated CDL drivers will be relocated to Meridian Waste’s existing hauling and transfer station operations located at 17900 Veteran’s Memorial Parkway in Foristell.

“Tuck in acquisitions, such as this asset purchase from Rapid Response, is ideal for our St. Louis marketplace operations,” stated Bob Mathis, Area President – Missouri.

Although small in size, ticks can cause major problems by spreading dangerous diseases like Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), thousands of tickborne illnesses go unreported every year, yet the rates have steadily increased since the 1990s. So, when it comes to ticks, being educated and developing a plan of action can protect you and your pets from contracting these potentially-life threatening infectious diseases.

This new program, led by Katie Willis, St. Charles County Division Director of Humane Services, and Rachael Meara, St. Charles County Park Ranger, offers participants the op-

portunity to learn about a variety of ticks, how to prevent bites, and the proper removal process. During this hour-long program, guests will have the opportunity to ask questions about these disease-carrying arachnids that are found in your backyard, hanging out at campsites and in the parks.

Guests also will discover interesting facts about the most common ticks in our area, including the American dog tick, Blacklegged tick, Brown dog tick and Lone star tick.

Participants who attend this informative program will receive a goodie bag filled with tick prevention supplies and educational information. Green Tree art teacher wins excellence in education award for South Central U.S. Region Green Tree Elementary art teacher Pam Winter was named the winner of the Alpha Delta Kappa’s Excellence in Education Award for the entire South Central region at ADK’s All Regions Virtual Conference at the end of August. The South Central region includes Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico.

Alpha Delta Kappa is a teacher sorority that promotes leaders in the field of education, and Winter will receive $500 for educational purposes for winning this award.

“I am humbled and honored to receive the award,” Winter said. “Alpha Delta Kappa has so many members who are leaders in the field of education. These women are extraordinary and have helped me become the ed-

ucator I am today.”

Deb Braman, a retired second grade teacher from Green Tree, nominated Winter for the award. “Pam daily exudes the qualities of an honorary sister of ADK as she shares an energetic and positive influence among her students and fellow educators,” Braman said. “Pam’s altruism, artistic skills, warm personality and her technology expertise have helped to create a strong bond among our ADK sisters, the community, the district and those in need of our services.”

Winter has worked for the WSD since 2005. “Allowing students to explore their own creativity brings me so much joy,” she said. “Watching my kids grow, learn, and trust in their own creative endeavors is such

SCC advances efforts to create a diverse, equitable and inclusive campus Embedded in the mission of St. Charles Community College is a promise to celebrate diversity and prepare students to succeed in a global environment. To help advance this mission, in 2017 SCC approved a new Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Plan which includes goals focused on increasing the success of racial minority students, closing the gap to ensure a more diverse faculty and staff and providing a welcoming and inclusive environment, just to name a few.

With the advent of a new academic year, institutions of higher education, including SCC, have faced many challenges. In addition to delivering instruction and support services amid COVID-19, the news has been filled with stories that depict acts of violence and racial injustice against African Americans.

According to Martha Garcia Kampen, St. Charles Community College chief diversity officer, “Many national events, including the death of George Floyd and recent shooting of Jacob Black, have deeply affected many people in our region.”

Kampen sees her primary goal as helping make SCC a welcoming, inclusive campus where everyone feels a sense of belonging.

“I believe the more we understand about other people, the better we understand ourselves. The better we understand ourselves, the more effective we will be in contributing in a positive way to the world,” Kampen said.

Though COVID-19 has come with many challenges, SCC has embraced the virtual space to continue facilitating conversations on a variety of issues. Starting in September, the Multicultural Experience and Hidden History-Uncomfortable

Conversations Series will touch on topics like race, social change and more. As part of the curriculum, the college has established courses such as African American History Since 1877, Intercultural Communication, Introduction to Global Studies, Sex, Gender and Society and History of Latin America. Additionally, students have the opportunity to earn a Diversity Certificate of Specialization.

To further advance diversity at SCC, Dr. Barbara Kavalier, President/CEO shared that the college is launching several new initiatives this fall aimed at advancing critical diversity strategies, including identifying opportunities for students to engage in critical conversations about race, improving hiring practices to increase diversity among faculty and staff and creating a new multicultural center for students.

“We are already making great progress on several fronts, but this is just the beginning,” said Kavalier. “We have to do our part to address racism, inequities and injustices.”

In addition, Kavalier is establishing the President’s Council on Race and Diversity which will include faculty, staff, students and community representatives. The purpose of the Council is to explore opportunities for expanding awareness and understanding of racial issues and to identify strategies for further advancing diversity, equity and inclusion at St. Charles Community College.

SCC faculty and staff are committed to advancing their work on diversity, equity and inclusion.

As Kavalier shared, “We must engage in critical conversations about race. We must take action to do better. We must be open to change as we fulfill our diversity goals and advance our mission.”

Ingredients: 12 (6-inch) corn tortillas 1 ½ teaspoon olive oil 2 medium zucchinis, chopped 2 plum tomatoes, chopped 1 medium red onion, chopped 1 each green and red bell pepper, chopped 2 jalapeno peppers, with seeds, mince 1 cup frozen corn kernels, thawed 4 scallions, green and white parts, minced ¼ cup chopped cilantro (plus 4 sprigs for garnish) 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 ½ cups grated pepper jack cheese ¼ cup fat-free sour cream Directions: Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Place corn tortillas on baking sheets. Bake for 10 minutes or until crisp.

While tortillas are in the oven, heat a large, nonstick pan over medium-high heat. Add oil. Once hot, sauté zucchini, tomatoes, onion, peppers, corn and scallion for 4 minutes.

On Aug. 28, actor Chadwick Boseman passed away at the age of 43.

Best known for playing T’Challa, the heir to the technologically advanced kingdom of Wakanda, in 2018’s “Black Panther,” Boseman had been battling colon cancer for years. The news of his death quickly flashed across social media as fans and colleagues paid tribute to the fallen actor. A few days later, Marvel Studios and ABC honored him with a special tribute and the network television debut of “Black Panther.”

Before making his indelible mark in the MCU, Boseman turned in an impressive performance as Jackie Robinson in 2013’s “42.”

This film focused on Robinson’s struggles after he broke baseball’s color barrier as a member of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Boseman personified the legendary athlete’s battle against hatred and prejudice on and off the field. Harrison Ford had some great moments opposite Boseman as Branch Rickey, the President and General Manager of the Dodgers who made Robinson part of the team.

Boseman continued to portray real-life figures on the big screen. In 2014’s “Get on Up,” for example, he played James Brown, the leg-

‘Yeggs’ is a comic series about Robert and Bill, two rabbits who have opened their own egg franchise in the Midwest (St. Louis area). We follow their day to day lives, watching as they go about the hectic task of preparing for their one big day every year. Along the way they have adventures filled with fun, comic doings and pathos.

Moore On Life I guess it’s time to retire my fuzzy leg warmers and platform heels because 2020 has reigned in a new trendy accessory.

Yes, face masks are here for who knows how long and because of this, the fashion conscious public demands they be stylish.

I suppose if we are going to be forced to wear these uncomfortable face-diapers then at least they need to make a statement.

Newlyweds are on board. Couples about to be married are now having them custom-made to match their formal attire; lacy for the bride and silky black for the groom. This makes me wonder if the customary kiss will be allowed at the end of the ceremony with face coverings blocking the process. I’m thinking…no.

“You may now kiss the…err…you may now head bump the bride…gently.”

Other people are using the occasion to displaying messages. Kind of like a personal face billboard. Cute phrases are popping up like: “Keep your distance” or, “What day is it?” My personal favorite is: “Not here to rob anyone.”

Some daring individuals are even posting political statements on their masks. These people are asking for a face punch and have very few brain cells left in their collection; either that or they have lined the inside of their mask with a metal plate.

Kids are having fun with them. Moms are sending their little ones off to school with masks sporting their favorite cartoon or super hero character.

Unfortunately, little Timmy will most likely come home with a brown paper lunch bag – over his face with eyeholes cut out.

Mom: “Timmy! Where is the face mask I put on you this morning?!”

Timmy: “I traded it with Benny for Cheetos.”

Mom: “Well trade it right back from him tomorrow!”

Yeah, not gonna work. When my kids were that age I couldn’t get them to keep their pants on let alone expect them to wear a suffocating face shield all day.

So I’m joining in with the chic people. I make sure my mask matches the outfit I have on that day. When I leave a building, I pull it down under my chin. I call it my chin hammock. I feel so fashionable and up-to-date. It looks great with my sassy mullet.
