By Brett Auten A once submerged and sodden 370 Lakeside Park has reopened and is set to host its biggest event of the year.

The 2019 edition of Celebrate St. Peters will take place on Sept. 20 and 21 and will feature top-flight live entertainment, amusement park rides, and more food and beverages advised for consumption.

Heavy rains and flooding put 370 Lakeside Park underwater. Closed since May 3, it opened back up on the first week of September.

“One of our biggest concerns was if the park was going to dry out in time,” Lisa Bedian, city of St. Peters Communications Director, said. “Forty-five days ago, there

was 18-feet of water. One of the engineers estimated that to be around 1.3 billion gallons of water. But the park looks really nice considering all that it has been through.”

Parking inside 370 Lakeside Park is limited to Reserved Parking Passes only. Lawn areas inside the park were greatly impacted by this year’s flood. Due to limited parking, you should arrive early or strongly consider using satellite parking at Mid Rivers Mall, where free shuttles are available at all parking areas.

“The Reserved Parking Passes are selling quickly, as they typically do,” Bedian added.

cations: at the Executive Centre Parkway entrance near Planet Fitness, and at Grand Teton Drive entrance across from the St. Peters Justice Center. There are only 500 Reserved Parking spaces inside 370 Lakeside Park. One Reserved Parking Pass is good for both Friday and Saturday so you will be able to come and go as you need to during both days of the event without having to worry about a parking place.

Reserved Parking Passes will be on sale at St. Peters City Hall and St. Peters Rec-Plex from through the end of business on Sept.

They were among the 103 high school students from across Missouri who attended CYCLE July 17-19 in Jefferson City.

Each July, an action-filled three days provides high school students opportunities to learn first-hand what it is like to be involved in politics, the cooperative form of business and being a leader.

The program included nationally known speakers and time at the Missouri State Capitol learning how a bill goes through the process to become a law. To learn more about electric cooperatives, the group was divided up into teams that competed in various events like the “build a cooperative” game.

Another highlight was hearing from the Rachel’s Challenge Organization. Rachel’s family and friends speak to youth around the world about Rachel’s legacy of being a positive

role model to everyone she met in life. Students also toured the Winston Churchill Museum in Fulton and saw a live powerline demonstration at Callaway Electric Cooperative.

“I have been to other leadership conferences and this is one of the best and most unique,” Meyer said. “I’m glad I had this opportunity.”

The CYCLE program is in its 16th year and is a recipient of the National Community Youth Service award for the top youth program among all electric cooperatives in the country.

The annual contest is open to high school sophomores who live and attend school in Cuivre River’s general service area, or who have Cuivre River Electric service in their homes. Applications for next year’s program will be accepted in the spring.

St. Charles County paramedics recognized by American Heart Association for STEMI Care Next summer, residents throughout the metro area will undoubtedly be tuned in to see if American athletes bring home the gold at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Last month, one group in our region already garnered gold status, albeit in a different form. St. Charles County Ambulance District (SCCAD) paramedics earned the American Heart Association’s Mission: Lifeline EMS Gold Plus distinction for their continued implementation of quality measures for the treatment of patients who experience ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) – a severe type of heart attack.

Each year, more than 250,000 individuals experience a STEMI, which is caused by a blockage of blood flow to the heart and requires timely treatment. To prevent death, it is critical to restore blood flow as quickly as possible.

Unfortunately, a significant number of these patients don’t receive this prompt attention. The correct tools, training and practices allow SCCAD paramedics to rapidly identify suspected heart attack patients and trigger an early response from the awaiting hospital personnel. Agencies that receive the Mission: Lifeline Gold award demonstrated at least 75 percent compliance for each required achievement measure for two years. The ‘Plus’ distinction reflects that paramedics are consistently performing a 12‐lead ECG on patients within 10 minutes on chest pain calls.

“Paramedics play a vital part in the system of care for those who have heart attacks,” said James Jollis, M.D., Chair of the Mission: Lifeline Advisory Working Group. “Since they are often the first medical point of contact, they can shave precious minutes of life‐saving treatment time off by activating the emergency response system that alerts hospitals. We applaud SCCAD for meeting evidence‐based guidelines in the treatment of STEMI patients.”

SCCAD paramedics and leadership staff are elated to be recognized at this high level, but are quick to highlight that it is their collaborative relationships with area hospitals that make it possible.

“We’re working diligently with our partners at Barnes‐Jewish St. Peters, Progress West, SSM Health St. Joseph Hospital St. Charles and SSM Health St. Joseph Hospital Lake St. Louis to develop processes and protocols with the goal of improving the quality of care for STEMI patients,” said John Romeo, Deputy Chief Medical Officer for SCCAD. Cardiac care has been an area of focus for SCCAD in recent years; in 2015, the district was the first in the region to debut cardio‐cerebral resuscitation (CCR) – an innovative approach to cardiac arrest management that saw a significant increase in survival to hospital discharge rates.

Community members invited to help prioritize Great Rivers Greenway’s investment in St. Charles County

Great Rivers Greenway, St. Charles County and the municipalities within St. Charles County are working together to develop a coordinated greenway plan for the county. This project is part of Great Rivers Greenway overall efforts to connect St. Louis City, St. Louis County and St. Charles County with a network of greenways where people can walk, run and ride a bike. With partners, 125 miles of greenways have been established thus far. This project will guide the next phase of the public agency’s sales tax investment in St. Charles County greenways.

The planning process will consider existing and planned trail projects as well as the feedback of people who live, work, learn or play in St. Charles County. When complete, the St. Charles County Greenway Plan will include an updated greenway map with prioritized projects and partnership models for building greenways in the future.

The year-long planning process will be divided into five phases; data collection, analysis, concepts, refinement and final recommendations. Phase one—data collection—began in August. Community members will be asked to rank the kinds of greenway experiences they would like to have and identify the natural (e.g. rivers, parks) and constructed places (e.g community centers, libraries, schools) in St. Charles County where they would

“We want to make sure we bring everyone to the table—residents, community leaders, business owners, public agencies, municipalities and other stakeholders—to develop a strategic plan for connecting St. Charles County with greenways,” says Ryan Graham, St. Charles County Parks and Recreation Director.

Martha was her best friend, so the loss was tremendous. In the days and weeks that followed she felt the tensile pressure increase. She planned a funeral while caring for her young sister and brother and waited to see if she would have to plan another. Man’s spirit is not as tenable as the hull of a ship. Too often we believe the lie that we cannot confront and conquer the storms of life. But men like Ernest Shackleton prove we can. The ship Endurance was crushed but not a single man of the expedition was lost due to the indomitable spirits of Ernest and all who were with him. He gave God credit for walking beside him on the journey where at any moment they could have perished.

When tensile pressure is too great for us to bear, God is our strength. If we cry to Him for help, He will answer.

On March 14, Francis Howell Central High School alum and NFL player Pierre Desir signed a three-year contract extension with the Indianapolis Colts. Within days of the signing, the former Spartan was in contact with FHC because he wanted to give back to the school that “gave him so much.” He is generously donating $185,000 and has asked that it be used to transform the FHC fitness center and benefit an entirely new generation of students.

Desir was born in Haiti and immigrated to America with his family when he was only four years old. While at FHC, Desir was a star on the football team and named an all-state defensive back. After high school, he went on to play football for Washburn and Lindenwood University.

He worked hard both on and off the field, and eventually his perseverance and talent led him to be drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 2014. Coming from a small college, Desir overcame the long odds of playing professional football, and is now living out his dream.

While Desir has a lot to celebrate, one of his first thoughts after signing his new contract was how he could give back.

“I learned so much throughout my years in high school,” said Desir. “I wanted to show my appreciation for what they have done for me throughout my career and when I was in school.”

The donation will allow FHC to build a stateof-the-art fitness center and weight room that can be used by all students. It will provide more space and professional equipment for athletes to train for sports, but also for students to utilize during physical education classes.

“My hope for the fitness room is to allow kids to come into an environment where they’re proud of,” said Desir. “More kids will be able to come in and be active with all of the new equipment.”

With big changes coming to the FHC facility, the school community is excited and grateful to Pierre for his generosity.

“I am so thankful to him to be the person that he is and to have the desire to do all of that,” said FHC

Not only will FHC benefit from the donation, but other schools will as well. The equipment from the old FHC weight room will be passed down to Saeger and Hollenbeck to be used by middle school students.

“It’s just very moving to see somebody so generous who wants to give back and help others,” said FHC Activities Director Scott Harris. “He genuinely cares for these kids.”

Harris shared how Desir comes back to campus often and talks with students. He attends basketball games and occasionally works out in the FHC fitness center.

“It’s cool how we have a person from our high school who is represented in the NFL and is still coming back, getting to know us, and getting to inspire us even though we are just high school kids,” said FHC junior Sophie Delaney.

As FHC begins work on the new fitness center, they are also focusing on the branding of the space. The school is dedicating a wall to Pierre as a thank you for his generosity and support. The wall is a perfect way to honor their successful alum and to foster a sense of pride as well. It will also serve as a reminder for students – a reminder that they can go as far as their talent and drive will take them, and still remember where it all started.

Wentzville educator selected as finalist for presidential teaching award

Lisa Waltenberger, a math and Project Lead the Way teacher at Timberland High School in the Wentzville School District, has been selected as a finalist for the 2019 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). The award is the highest recognition that a K-12 mathematics or science teacher can receive for outstanding teaching in the United States.

The awards are given to mathematics and science teachers from each of the 50 states and four U.S. jurisdictions. It recognizes those teachers who develop and implement a high-quality instructional program that enhances student learning.

Waltenberger is only one of two math teachers in Missouri selected to represent the state as finalists for the PAEMST.

“I am incredibly honored to be a state finalist for this award,” said Waltenberger. “I am thankful for the opportunities in the Wentzville School District to grow professionally and the ability to incorporate various teaching methods into my classroom.”

“We are blessed to have Lisa at Timberland High School. She always puts students first and is wonderful at building relationships with them,” said Timberland Principal Dr. Kyle Lindquist.

The White House will announce the winners next year. Those selected for this presidential honor will receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation to be used at their discretion.

They also are invited to Washington, D.C., for an awards ceremony, educational events, and visits with members of Congress and the Administration.

Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Charles County awarded $10,600 from Taco Bell Foundation On Aug. 15, the Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Charles County received a $10,600 grant provided by the Taco Bell Foundation to support more than 1,000 youth in the greater St. Charles community. The funding will go towards job-readiness and career preparation programs for teens and other programs that empower students in St. Charles County to graduate high school and achieve their dreams.

Rascals are the Western Division Champions again The 2018 defending West Division champion River City Rascals baseball club plays in the Frontier League with home games at the friendly confines of CarShield Field in O’Fallon.

Even though the team ended the regular season three games out of first place, their record was good enough to capture one of the two wild card slots in the Frontier League.

The championship series plated the Rascals at home for the first two games of the best-of-five series against the Evansville Otters.

The O’Fallon club wasted little time in the first postseason game as they clobbered the Otters 102.

The major contribution came from the Rascals starter Brendan Feldmann (1-0) was nothing short of dominant in a complete game effort, allowing just two unearned runs on two hits, the last of which came in the third inning. He struck out 11 and only issued a single walk, retiring the final 16 Otters hitters in order to close out the game.

The second game saw the defending champs take a 4-0 lead only to see the opposing team get three back quickly.

Again the Rascals starter this time Taylor Ahearn went five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits with five strikeouts in a winning effort.

The third game was played in Evansville but the River City team came from behind in dramatic fashion.

Outfielder L. J. Kalawaia’s three-run shot in the top of the fourth put the Rascals ahead for good and printed the ticket for the Frontier Championship series against the Florence Freedom of Kentucky. The first two games will be at the Freedom’s field starting Sept. 10.

Many dignitaries were present outside the facility before they opened the doors with John Kelly the voice of the Blues was the EMCEE for the event.

The major introduction was Tom Stillman, a lifelong hockey fan, who became Chairman and Governor of the St. Louis Blues on May 9, 2012.

Though his writing has taken him far from St. Louis, Steve is, at heart, still the same wide-eyed kid who spent countless hours watching classic movies at neighborhood theaters.

‘Yeggs’ is a comic series about Robert and Bill, two rabbits who have opened their own egg franchise in the Midwest (St. Louis area). We follow their day to day lives, watching as they go about the hectic task of preparing for their one big day every year. Along the way they have adventures filled with fun, comic doings and pathos.

Moore On Life So this happened at our house.

We’ve had a pesky raccoon trespassing into our garden for many weeks this summer. Finally we were able to capture it and relocate it to an undisclosed politician’s backyard. Those thieving little bandits can be so aggravating and destructive…so can the raccoons.

In doing so, we ran across an abandoned bunny rabbit. A sweet little homeless orphan someone had thoughtlessly unloaded. He was tame and adorable. I picked him up; our eyes met and we sealed our affection for each other as he nibbled a piece of clover.

My husband had other ideas.

“Put it back. We’re not keeping it,” he said.

“Don’t you yell in front of the baby!” I answered.

“I’m not yelling. I’m voicing my opinion in a vigorous manner.”

“Well you’re hurting Nibbles feeling!”

“Nibbles? What? You’ve already named the thing?”

“Yes, he had me at the first nose wiggle.”

Fate had brought us together. There was no turning back.

My husband drove towards home grumbling under his breath, “Trade off a raccoon and get a rabbit.”

“Don’t go home yet,” I said. “We need supplies for Nibbles.”

“What supplies? We’ve got a backyard full of grass. What else does a rabbit need?”

By Cindy Moore cessities which included: a cage, water bottle, bags of bedding, dried grass, bunny food pellets and grains and specialty treats and pee-pee pellets along with rabbit stimuli, (a.k.a rabbit toys), an outdoor bunny enclosure (a.k.a rabbit playpen), bunny harness and leash for walking (a.k.a. hopping) and of course some mango-infused cleaner to make the fur clean and shiny and smelling like a tropical rain forest.

Our free pet along with the essential accessories totaled well over two Benjamins (a.k.a. $200). But that little nose wiggle…priceless!

My husband pushed the cart and unenthusiastically unloaded Nibbles necessities.

“Isn’t this exciting?” I said as he shoved the last bag into the burgeoning trunk.

He mumbled, “I should have kept the raccoon.

I’d be out a few tomatoes, but way ahead in cabbage.”

When some bunny loves you
