By Brett Auten Whether it’s country or rock, Celebrate St. Peters 2018 has major acts taking the stage with free live concerts on Friday and Saturday night, Sept. 14-15 at 370 Lakeside Park.

The live music is just a portion of the eighth annual Celebrate St. Peters as carnival rides, game booths, scrumptious food, local vendors and crafters, family entertainment, fireworks and more return.

“Our event organizers have done a great job of putting together a variety of free entertainment for our community,” St. Peters Mayor Len Pagano said. “We have great shows lined up for the Main Stage on both Friday and Saturday night. You can enjoy country one night and rock the next night. On Saturday afternoon, we have great oldies and dance music at the Celebrate Stage, and live family entertainment in the Community News Family Area.”

Pam Tillis and Lorrie Morgan set the table Friday night on the Main Stage - presented by New Country 92.3 and Mid Rivers Newsmagazine - as The Grits and Glamour Tour brings country music to St. Peters. Tillis and Morgan have recorded 28 top 10 hits, have more than 18 million records sold, and include 12 number one songs in their discography. Jesse Keith Whitley, the son of the late Keith Whitley and Lorrie Morgan, will open at 7 p.m.

On Saturday night, the volume will be turned up a little as Night Ranger will be playing all of their hits, plus deep cuts from their catalog, when they bring their 35th anniversary tour to the Main Stage. The California-based Night Ranger gained popularity during the 1980s. The band’s first five albums sold more than 10 million copies worldwide and have sold 17 million albums total. The quintet is best known for the power ballad “Sister Christian.”

Get ready for some free doggone fun with the St. Charles County Parks and Recreation Department. Dog lovers and their pets from across the region will converge on Broemmelsiek Park in Defiance from 10 a.m.–1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept.

15 for the 15th annual Paws in the Park dog festival. The event, which supports local animal shelters, is the largest of its kind in St. Charles County and takes place at the park’s Off-Leash Dog Area at 1795 Highway DD. The park’s five-acre dog park is a popular place for dogs to play year-round. The beautifully manicured fenced area has a large pond with dock and a pavilion with benches, making it the perfect location to host this community event.

The public is invited to bring their pooch to the park for an exciting lineup of contests, prizes, business exhibitors/vendors and sponsor giveaways, as well as K-9 obedience skills demonstrations and free food. Admission is free, but those who bring a pet supply donation will receive a special gift. Donations benefit the St. Charles County Pet Adoption Center and Five Acres Animal Shelter. Monetary donations also will be accepted.

St. Charles County files lawsuit against opioid drug companies, distributors St. Charles County has filed a lawsuit against pharmaceutical manufacturers and drug distributors for their aggressive and fraudulent marketing of prescription opioid painkillers that has led to a drug epidemic throughout the county and nationwide.

“There has been both a human and financial cost to this epidemic,” says St. Charles County Executive Steve Ehlmann. “I think just about every family in our county has been affected by this epidemic or knows a family who has been.”

Ehlmann says that, aside from the human cost, “St. Charles County taxpayers have experienced costs and losses directly related to the actions of these drug companies. The opioid crisis has reshaped the daily reality in our county in numerous ways, putting a greater demand on law enforcement, health services, corrections and the courts. County government has also expended dollars on community education programs and programs to treat those with opioid-related addiction.”

The county seeks relief in the complaint that includes compensatory and punitive damages for the millions of dollars it spends each year to combat the public nuisance created by the drug companies’ deceptive marketing campaign that misrepresented the safety and efficacy of long-term opioid use.

The county’s lawsuit seeks to hold the defendants responsible for what many are calling the worst man-made epidemic in modern medical history. The county was the first in the St. Louis region to train its police, sheriff ’s deputies and correctional officers to administer Naloxone (Narcan) and is seeking to recover those costs. According to the Bureau of Vital Statistics, Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, St. Charles County had 301 deaths due to opioid overdoses from 2013-2017.

Local students attend Boys and Girls State The year 2018 could very well be the defining year for several students from some of our local high schools. These students, all juniors, from high schools, that included St. Dominic, Fort Zumwalt North, Fort Zumwalt West and Christian High School were selected by their Teachers to attend either Boys State or Girls State programs sponsored by Post 388 of the American Legion in O’Fallon.

A total of 13 young men and women were selected to learn how the city, county and state governments operate in Missouri. With a total of 960 students attending Boys State and 800 Girls attending Girls State from across the great State of Missouri, they had to sell themselves and be voted on by their fellow competing students.

The object of the week-long class is for each student to learn, first hand, how the government operates. On Aug. 27, these students, along with their families were guests at the American Legion Post 388 home at 607 Westridge Dr. in O’Fallon.

Each student was given the chance to voice their own experiences while going through their week at either summer program.

Two St. Charles County charitable organizations were each awarded a $5,000 “Sharing Success” grant by Cuivre River Electric Cooperative (CREC) and CoBank. Volunteers in Medicine St. Charles County and TREE House of Greater St. Louis were the recipients of the grants.

“The ‘Sharing Success’ grant is such a tremendous opportunity for our cooperative to support one of our guiding principles of ‘Concern for Community,’” says Diane Saale, President, CREC Board of Directors.

Volunteers in Medicine St. Charles (VIM) serves the primary health needs of St. Charles and Lincoln County uninsured low income adult residents. The clinic, founded in 1996, is completely staffed by volunteers -- professionals including physicians, R.N.s, dietitians, pharmaceutical educators and support staff. The clinic does not charge for services, and depends upon donations and grants like “Sharing Success” to continue providing assistance. Prescription costs account for about 70 percent of the clinic’s patient care expenses. VIM’s Clinical Director and R.N., Anita Hockett, said that according to 2018 VIM patient surveys, those who use the clinic have expressed how thankful they are that it exists.

TREE House of Greater St. Louis, formerly known as Therapeutic Horsemanship (TH), was founded in 1975, and exists to improve the lives of individuals with disabilities and their families through therapy, recreation, education and exploration. The organization, a leader in equine-assisted therapy, is located on 90 acres in St. Charles County, housing a herd of 20 specially trained therapy horses. TH has 25 part-time therapists/instructors, and five full-time staff members, along with over 260 volunteers to help to serve the needs of more than 3,000 people with disabilities in St. Louis and five surrounding counties.

“This incredible team, together with the financial generosity of individuals, organizations and corporations supports life-changing achievements that just cannot be replicated in other settings,” says TH Executive Director Nate Harms. The

organization also offers a special program called “Freedom Reins,” specifically tailored for veterans and service members. “We are seeking interested participants for ‘Freedom Reins,’” Harms said.

“Sharing Success” is a matching grant program created by CoBank in 2012. The cooperative bank partners with its customers, like CREC, to support the causes and organizations they care about.

Cobank will match any donation CREC makes to a 501c3, up to $5,000 per year. This year, CREC awarded $2,500 to each recipient, and CoBank matched the funds.

New hours at Boone’s Trail Branch and Augusta Branch Libraries The St. Charles City-County Library has added expanded hours at the Boone’s Trail Branch and Augusta Branch Libraries.

The new hours for these locations are: Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday: 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. and Saturday: 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. The Boone’s Trail Branch will no longer be open on Wednesdays.

“Expanding services at the Augusta and Boone’s Trail Branches to include additional weekday morning hours will offer more options for busy customers as they plan their library visits,” says St. Charles City-County Library Deputy Director, Laurie St. Laurent. “Staff at these two locations will be more available to assist with resources, technology, and to provide classes and programs for customers. This change was made in response to customer suggestions and as a result of population growth in those sections of St. Charles County.”

The Boone’s Trail Branch (serving New Melle, southern Wentzville, and the surrounding areas) and the Augusta Branch (serving Augusta, Defiance, and the surrounding areas) both offer extensive collections of books, music and movies; public computers and WiFi internet services; and classes and events for all ages and interests.

Operation Round Up grant helps grow Seeds of Hope program

When Kathy Thompson first started working at LINC St. Charles County, she saw an early childhood center that was in need of some improvements.

“Thirteen years ago, it was more like babysitting,” recalled Thompson, the executive director at the Wentzville-based agency. “Now over the past three to five years, it has become more preparation for kindergarten.”

Thanks to a $3,000 Operation Round Up grant awarded by the Cuivre River Electric Community Trust Board, LINC St. Charles County will be able to grow its Seeds of Hope Grandparents program. Seniors ages 55 and over who participate will help free up and allow teachers in the preschool-aged program

to give more individual attention to the students. They will also tutor and mentor troubled teenagers and will be utilized at other locations where there is a need, such as in local schools or in hospitals.

Headquartered in northeastern Wentzville, LINC St. Charles offers a variety of assistance programs for disadvantaged individuals and families. The agency feeds approximately 7,000 people annually through its food pantry. The faith-based organization has been in existence for 25 years.

Polish Ambassador visits Lindenwood On Aug. 17, Ambassador Piotr Wilczek and his distinguished delegation from Poland were on Lindenwood University’s campus in St. Charles to talk with legislators, state officials, business leaders and members of the local community about investment and trade opportunities between Poland and the state of Missouri.

Wilczek was introduced by Dr. Wojciech Golik, who in February of this year was named Honorary Consul of the Republic of Poland in St. Louis. The Economic Opportunities Conference was sponsored by the Hammond Institute for Free Enterprise in the Plaster School of Business & Entrepreneurship.

According to Golik, Poland was recently classified by the FTSE Russell index provider as a developed market with a Gross National Income (PPP) of over one trillion dollars.

“Polish investment in the U.S. was $2 billion in 2015, and continues its upward trend,” he said.

“This was a unique, local opportunity for us to focus on investment and trade opportunities in our region,” said Dean Roger Ellis, “and foster what we hope will be a long-standing dialogue for future growth and economic development. As a nation, we the people are celebrating the 231st anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution on Sept. 17.

Constitution Week is celebrated during Sept.17-23 each year. This weeklong commemoration of America’s most important started 63 years ago by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). In 1955, the Daughters petitioned Congress to set aside September 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week.

The resolution was later adopted by the United States Congress and signed into Pub-

lic Law #915 on Aug. 2, 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The purpose for celebrating is: Emphasizing citizens’ responsibilities for protecting, preserving and defending the Constitution for posterity; informing the people that the Constitution is the basis of America’s great heritage, and the foundation for our way of life as we know it and enforcing the study of the historical events that led to the framing of the Constitution, which took 87 days and over 700 hours between May and September of 1787.

SCC realigns to serve Warren County in its extended service area St. Charles Community College added Warren County to its extended service area at a signing ceremony on Aug. 28, at Elks Lodge in Warrenton.

According to college officials, SCC will now serve students in the Warren County R-III and Wright City R-II school districts’ boundaries as well as the local business and industry.

“We are thrilled to expand access of higher education to our neighboring county,” said Barbara Kavalier, Ph.D., SCC president.

The new alignment comes at the request of the two public school boards based on the recommendation of a Warren County workgroup established last fall to evaluate current postsecondary education opportunities, determine technical education interest and assess business and industry employee needs. The goal was to develop and present a collaborative technical institute plan to the boards of education. The group was led by the Greater Warren County Economic Council and had members from local governments, school districts and the business community.

“Addressing the technical skill needs of our workforce is critical to the future success of our community,” said Peggy Rodgers, president of the Greater Warren County

Economic Development Council. “Working with SCC to create technical skills-based training programs will ensure that our community, region and state remain an attractive location for business.”

Warren County R-III and Wright City R-II school boards voted in late March and early April to request that the Missouri Community College Associate (MCCA) re-evaluate the current service areas to allow SCC to serve the area.

The service area boundaries were initially established

by MCCA in the 1990s as a mutual agreement between the state’s 12 community college systems, and since then, the boundaries remained unchanged.

Warren County was a part of East Central College’s extended service area, but the workgroup determined its geographical location was a barrier for students.

At the request of Warren County school boards, MCCA established a subcommittee of several Missouri community college presidents and chancellors to determine the best approach for re-evaluating the state’s service areas, and ultimately determined that the realignment of SCC with Warren County will be beneficial to the economic growth of state of Missouri.

Pat Wahler, St. Peters native and award-winning writer with fifteen stories in the popular Chicken Soup for the Soul series, has written her first historical novel, “I am Mrs. Jesse James,” released on Aug. 28

by Blank Slate Press, an imprint of the Amphorae Publishing Group. The story is told through the eyes of Zee Mimms James, the woman who wed the most notorious outlaw of the Old West.

The book came about as a result of the author’s desire to discover more about Zee. Why would a woman marry a man on the wrong side of the law, and why would she stand by him despite his reputation? Research into the subject soon revealed Jesse James had become iconic, the subject of countless books and articles. Zee had been relegated to little more than a footnote in

her husband’s life. Through piecing together available bits of information, a picture of Zee eventually emerged and so did her story.

Cousins Jesse and Zee fell in love during the weeks she nursed him back to health after he received a near-fatal chest wound during the close of the Civil War. Following a nine-year engagement, the couple defied her parents to wed at the height of Jesse’s infamy.

Zee soon found herself embroiled in a new life that brought with it adventure, love, and desperation. Jesse James had scores to settle. For him, the war would never be over. For Zee, the war was only beginning.

Inspiration Corner: Food is not your friend One of the biggest mistakes people make when choosing to lose weight is to not change the way they eat. They try to “bargain” with their meals – like the food is their friend – often because their relationship with food has long been an emotional one.

My brother laughed at me when I told him I gave up soda. “Not even diet soda?” “Nope,” I said.

“Diet soda is a chemical laden beverage that dehydrates the body and erodes tooth enamel.” He chugged down his glass of Coke and held up his glass. “Margaret, here’s to you! I will never give up soda.” And then he started eating my dad’s birthday cake, from which I abstained. My family openly mocked my food choices and it hurt.

I grew up in a family obsessed with food. My mother baked. Staples included cookies, cake, peanut brittle and fudge at Christmas. Baked goods were her love language. At the same time, she was always trying a new fad diet. I watched her weight yo-yo with the Cabbage Soup Diet, OptiFast (a favorite of Oprah back in 1988), and The Grapefruit Diet. The result was always the same; she’d lose 25 pounds and gain back 30. She never learned the secret of lasting weight loss; true sustained change over time.

I saw an advertisement for a diet store recently. A woman who lost 100 pounds promised a “fat-busting pill” would shrink the consumer’s waistline. I was furious. I’ve eaten those pills and they don’t work. One may as well eat sawdust to eliminate hunger. Dear Reader, save your money.

The real secret to lasting weight loss isn’t a secret

at all; eat foods that nourish your body instead of poisoning it, and move more.

A big hurdle for me in those early days of weight loss was cutting out the foods I was loved. Previously, every meal had to be “an experience.” When I made the difficult choice to eliminate sugar, fast food and processed carbohydrates, I grieved. But after two weeks of sugar-free living, everything tasted sweeter. My first sip of milk sans sugar was an epiphany. In truth, I was desperate and therefore willing to change. I rationalized that if I had to suffer through a 30 minute walk, I better not ruin it with donuts for breakfast.

The good news is the suffering was not permanent. Over time I found delight in fruits versus cake and roasted vegetables versus fried potatoes. Walks were no longer torture. And while I will always struggle with my cookie fetish, I no longer consider them my friend. Today, if you are desperate to lose weight or improve your blood sugars, take an honest look at what you put into your mouth. Breaking up with your best friend is hard, but food was never really your friend to begin with.

‘First Man’ Glosses Over Historic Moment

In “Interstellar,” a science fiction adventure from Christopher and Jonathan Nolan, students in the mid-21st century are taught that the Apollo Moon missions were merely propaganda to force the Russians into bankruptcy. The planet was going through a terrible blight, with certain crops disappearing forever, so educators wanted children to focus on saving the world instead of leaving it.

George Orwell explored this kind of revisionist history in his classic dystopian novel “1984.”

Unfortunately, the creative minds behind “First Man” also are editing history. This docudrama focuses on the life of Neil Armstrong, first man on the moon, and the Apollo 11 mission itself.

Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin planting the American flag in lunar soil became an iconic moment, but that event does not appear in the film.

Though director Damien Chazelle’s intentions may be good, those who grew up watching the Apollo missions on TV remember that moment quite clearly. The “Space Race” was exactly that because Russia and the United States raced at breakneck speed to be the first to land on lunar soil. John F. Kennedy set the goal of sending men to the moon in 1961, so NASA pushed their staff and astronaut crews hard for over eight years to achieve it.

This race was not without cost, however.

Neil Armstrong, played by Ryan Gosling in the film, almost died on a Gemini mission after his ship docked with a target vehicle in space. The

Gemini capsule started to spin and Armstrong used his thrusters to correct the problem. Both Armstrong and fellow astronaut David Scott were dangerously close to blacking out, though.

Armstrong almost lost his life again when he was training in a lunar landing simulator on earth. Nicknamed “The Flying Bedstead,” it went out of control and Armstrong parachuted out just in time. If he had not reacted in time, another man would have been the first to step on the moon.

In truth, the “First Man” had serious competition for that honor. According to Deke Slayton, head of the Astronaut office, Gus Grissom was under consideration to make the first landing. Slayton wanted a Project Mercury veteran to take that historic trip, and Grissom was the likely choice. A fire in what is now referred to as Apollo 1 claimed his life and the lives of fellow astronauts Ed White and Roger Chafee, though.

Cold War tensions fueled the Space Race throughout the Apollo missions. Americans really wanted to get to the moon first, so removing a flag-planting scene seems like an insult to Grissom, White, Chaffee and the other astronauts who died along the way.

Homer Hickam, author of the wonderful memoir “Rocket Boys,” wrote a recent op-ed piece stating that the flag-planting was not a big deal. Hickam and his friends created their own rockets in Coalwood, West Virginia, decades ago to win a national science fair. Hickam also joined NASA later in life and is currently a member of the National Space Council.

Sorry, Mr. Hickam, but the flag-planting is a big deal almost 50 years later. It was an American achievement that was hard won at a huge cost. “First Man” should celebrate that American achievement.

“First Man” opens nationwide on Oct. 12.

Moore On Life Recently a friend sent out a group text to inform all other friends that she could pass on a good deal at a department store she worked at – an extra 20 percent off of any sale item.

Now 20 percent off any item alone is a pretty sweet deal, but add that on top of an item already on sale?! Well now, in my book, that makes the item practically free. I was all onboard.

All we had to do was shop the online catalog and send her our purchase order.

“Hmm. Now what should I get? What do I need?” The word, nothing, came up in answer to both of those questions. How was I going to justify getting anything when I really didn’t need anything at the moment?

I put those annoying first-world problems aside and realized I desperately would need something since the price had gone down to “practically free.”

It would be like tossing dollar bills down the flusher not to act on this amazing offer, so I pressed ahead with the overwhelming assignment.

I swiped through the online catalog past shirts and skirts and purses and perfume and was not the least bit smitten with much of anything. Then I came across my first love, after chocolate and cats and books and Dr. Pepper and pizza and oh, vanilla Tootsie Rolls…shoes! There they were, tempting me like delicious vanilla Tootsie Rolls in the Garden of Eden: sweet strappy sandals and suede-y buckled boots and glittery flip-flops and sleek heels and comfy slip-ons…oh so many lovely,

Soon I came up with two pairs of tantalizing lovelies – a casual pair of jellies for wearing outdoors and a spicy pair of short leather boots. The good angel of common sense briefly landed upon my shoulder to remind me that I already had an abundance of every type of shoe imaginable and should donate the funds to a homeless cat shelter instead, however, I was saved by the devil of getthe-heck-out-of-my-business and immediately punched the order button.

The shoes arrived, I opened the package and there they were…beguiling, adorable footwear.

My husband took one look and asked snarkily, “Why do you need more shoes?”

That made me laugh out loud.

He should write a humor column.
